I've never heard of such a solution from MS. You may want to look at Event
Log Monitor for triggered events - it may answer your requirements.

We have a developer who had written a program that runs in UNIX (Of which I
know nothing about) to monitor specific things on our imaging system and
page one of us fortunate systems folks for specific errors on the system. He
also wants to provide us with a way to send an e-mailed response to a
designated mail account if the problem does not require immediate response,
but service can be delayed. His program would search the mail for key text
or specific characters that would tell it wether or not to escalate the
issue or put it aside. Is there a way to do this directly from the mail
server? Also - another alternative I guess, would be to install the Outlook
client on a machine and set up a rule to save these messages to a text file
that his program could search. I didn't see any rules in Outlook 2000 that
would enable us to do that. Does Microsoft provide a way to customize your
own rules? We are running Exchange 5.5, SP4 on an NT4, SP6a system. Thanks.

You say he's already written this program that examines the mail message - do you mean AFTER it arrives at its destination? So this program is not running on Unix, then? Only the monitoring program, which is sending mail to an Exchange server?

I'm confused.

Dear all,

Bit of a strange one which has caused me a problem of late. We use
Exchange Server 5.5 (sp3) as our mail server and all clients who connect
use Outlook 2000 on Windows 98.

In the last fortnight approximately 8 clients have begun to experience
serious performance problems with their Outlook software. Their mailbox
fires up with no problems but then, intermittently, Outlook will lock
up, sometimes for up to 10 minutes, when they open up a message, try to
attach something to a message, in fact just about anything can freeze it
up.

Go away make a cup of tea and when you come back it's fine, until the
next time. Now on a couple of these clients deleting the user profile on
the pc and re-creating has solved the issue leading me to think there is
some kind of corruption with the Outlook/Exchange local settings.
However I also now have 3 pc's which it looks like I am going to have to
re-install because I have tried absolutely everything in my knowledge
(which in fairness is not much!) with no success.

Nothing has changed on the network in recent weeks, there are no name
resolution issues, nothing recorded in the Exchange server event log,
and all other clients are ticking over quite nicely.

Any ideas where I can even begin to start troubleshooting such a
problem?

Thanks in advance for any ideas, James.

2002-02-12 Thread Neil Hobson

You may like to inform your boss that whilst testing SPs is an excellent
idea, holding off an upgrade for a long period of time is not
necessarily an excellent idea. The longer you leave an upgrade, the
more difficult/problematic it becomes to upgrade when you eventually get
around to it. IMHO, upgrading through multiple releases of a product or
a service pack is a far riskier business than keeping up to date with
incremental patches, etc.

The only reason I am still on sp3 is my boss. I have to test the
service pack, make sure it works fine, which I am already sure it will
be fine, and after testing, then it can be upgraded. My boss doesn't
give me time to "test" it, so I emailed him saying that the problems we
are having are caused mainly by not being on sp4. I keep CYA material
on these differences of opinion in regards to Exchange. We both agree
it is a mission critical app, which is why I want this upgraded, and he
thinks it works fine, so why upgrade.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the suggestion, sounded like the sort of thing I was looking
for but unfortunately I just tried it and it never worked. One of the
pc's in question never even had the file and on the other it was oly 2k
in size, deleted it but it never helped.

I also un-installed the AV software just in case but this didn't work
either. It's a shame because I would love to get to the bottom of it,
re-installing a pc just because an app is running poorly seems excessive
but spending an hour with a Windows 98 CD or spending 10 hours messing
around with every setting under the sun with a frustrated user is a no
brainer!

I think I will give SP4 a go on the Exchange box, have been holding back
on it until now.

Cheers, James.

2002-02-12 Thread James Gosnold

Hi Martin,

I recall reading a few threads on this list discussing some
issues/problems with SP4. As ours isn't the biggest or most complex
network Exchange shouldn't really be dealing with the compatability issues
that a server in a large enterprise might so I figured I would hold off
for a while, especially as we had no problems with what is a very
important tool for the company.

Perhaps this is a lesson to me to apply latest service packs asap.

By the way, it was me that uses the Hellspawn that is CA's av product.
What is AVAPI that you mentioned?

James.

RE: Outlook/Exchange problem

2002-02-12 Thread Martin Blackstone

Typically with SP's, I hold off about a month. I watch these boards to see
what is happening. If there are issues, you will see it here.

AVAPI- Microsoft Anti Virus API. A layer in MS Exchange server SP3 and
higher (though it was kind of fskd up until SP4). It allows an AVAPI
compatible virus scanner to scan the mail BEFORE it enters the information
store, rather than MAPI which scans it after. MAPI based scanners can become
quickly overloaded and start passing virus infected files. If something like
ILOVEYOU gets in, MAPI scanners can quickly become flooded with virii.
There has been some mention that AVAPI can pass a virus too, though I have
seen no real life examples.
The latest AV scanners use ESE based scanning which takes place at another
level in the mail server. This is supposed to be the best way yet.

I ran into a similar situation a few weeks ago...my user complained that
when she tried to do anything, the client would hang...all I did was add a
new profile for her on the client and it worked fine afterwards.

No. The main reason being is that I have a real belief that the issue is on
the client side. When the user has experienced these problems I have also
opened up their mailbox from a Terminal Server session at the same time and
there is no problem at all.

RE: Outlook / Exchange Rules.

Now it looks like everything is going into the rfp folder, regardless of
internal/external. The "Except if sender is in Global Address List Address
Book" doesn't seem to apply.

I'm trying to setup a rule that says..

If an email has "rfp" in the subject, forward it to rfp folder, UNLESS the
sender is in the Global Address List.

However, when I run the rule, the exact opposite happens. Senders from the GAL
go to the rfp folder and senders from outside the domain go to the INBOX.
Pardon?

Has anybody else ran into this? We're using Outlook 2003 and Exchange 2007.

Here is the rule line for line in the rules wizard

Apply this rule after the message arrives
With rfp in the subject
Move it to the rfp folder
Except if the sender is in Global Address List Address Book.

Seems pretty straight forward to me.

I hope your boss doesn't mind being lynched. How would you feel if you got a
pop-up every time you e-mailed the "MS Exchange Admin Lists" (I know it will be
more sensitive than that). But I would say if it pops up often enough to be
useful, then folks will get conditioned to clicking on it (Pavlov's Dogs type

It's a shame Mailtips can't be created that would do this. It seems you can
only apply custom Mailtips to specific mailboxes, not an entire recipient type
(e.g. != mailbox).

Besides, if you're not using Exchange and Outlook 2010, it won't work :)

not even get a Permissions tab let alone the options to change anything.

Outlook uses OST to provide offline mode. Rather by definition. OST == "Offline

Would outlook anywhere support offline mode, while a exec is on along flight,
and want to check / update email and then sync once he back online?

How to deal with long flights, and offline mode but no OST file.

Thanks

Hi Justino

If you enable the user to user Outlook Anywhere, previously known as RPC/HTTPS,
with cached mode then anytime he is unable to connect to the Server he will
automatically fall back to "off-line" mode. Once he reconnects his e-mail will
automatically sync.

2012-05-06 Thread Peter Johnson
Absolutely!!! I would recommend putting the one in the office on Outlook
Anywhere as well. Purely for consistency of experience.

Hi Justino

If you enable the user to user Outlook Anywhere, previously known as RPC/HTTPS,
with cached mode then anytime he is unable to connect to the Server he will
automatically fall back to "off-line" mode. Once he reconnects his e-mail will
automatically sync.

Outlook uses OST to provide offline mode. Rather by definition. OST == "Offline
Store".

Would outlook anywhere support offline mode, while a exec is on along flight,
and want to check / update email and then sync once he back online?

How to deal with long flights, and offline mode but no OST file.

Thanks
