is what our friend did. He isn't exactly a power user. It's certain
that he didn't know what he was doing. He deleted a bunch of to-keep
mail along with the to-delete stuff.

First mention I've seen of Outlook 2010. Try the same steps from an
earlier version.Send/Receive dropdown list has a this folder sync
in earlier versions. Step (3) isn't necessary. I've done similar steps
in rapid succession all the time, using OL 2007 and 2003.

As for this guy, I'd start to wonder about the reliability or accuracy
of the problem reporting. Exchange 2003 is not known to lose messages
as you describe without user help or some other unusual factor.

My OST is now rebuilt and it's back to being a little flaky about how it
works. It seems to cause problems if I rush it too much. Here's what I
mean

1) Send a message to self

2) Delete it from the Inbox

3) Do Update Folder on the Inbox

4) Delete if from Deleted Items

5) Do Update Folder on Deleted Items

6) Check recover deleted items

If I do the above in rapid succession, the message doesn't show up in
recover deleted items and it doesn't matter how long I wait, it's just
gone. If I do the above and pause a minute or two after steps 3 and 5,
it shows up in recover deleted items. (Update folder is a feature of
Office 2010. I don't remember if it was there in previous versions.)
I'm guessing the problems with my tests have been just that I've been
rushing things too much rather than that the OST was corrupt.

Note: when this guy deleted his messages the other day, I had him check
recover deleted items and they weren't there. I then had him check for
them on a different computer and they weren't there either in the
original folder or in recover deleted items. I'm guessing they're just
gone but any suggestions are appreciated.

Deleted message recovery is a server-based feature. If the messages
aren't seen in the recoverable list and were deleted within the deleted
item retention period of the server, then it would stand to reason they
were not deleted as far as the server is concerned - i.e. the deleting
from the (apparently corrupt) OST didn't synchronize to the server. So
look to see if they might be back where they originally were, or in the
deleted items folder. In theory, the messages cannot totally vanish
unless they were deleted from the Recover Deleted Items view.

Disabling cache mode seems to have done the trick. I re-enabled and now
it says it is going to take 7 hours to rebuild the OST! It looks like
that just dropped down to 1 hour.

So, are the deleted messages in the original OST? Is there a way of
recovering them? I didn't delete it, I just renamed.

I would like to have the recover deleted items to be able to retain e-mails for

The recover deleted items only works on items that were in the deleted
items folder.
(Unless you have the reg key on)
So you have to open the deleted items folder, then click on recover deleted
items to get back items that were in the deleted items folder over the last 7
days.

Hello,

I am having an issue where the Recover Deleted items section in outlook is not
storing e-mails that have been deleted. I checked the Exchange Server and I
have deleted items to be set to keep for seven days. I have read articles about
a registry key for DumpsterAlwaysOn, but figured I did not need that on the
Exchange Server since I have the option to keep deleted items for 7 days. I do
not have the option selected for Do Not Permanently delete mailboxes and items
until we the store has been backed up. Any help would be appreicated with this.

Sorry to say Richard, you are wrong.
If you make the registry change you can recover deleted items from any mailbox
you have configured in Outlook, not just the primary mailbox.

2008-11-14 Thread Carl Houseman
The only problem with cached mode is it's may be out of sync with online.
So if you don't see the thing you just deleted, do a Send/Receive to sync
things up, then try it again. If you just recovered something and it's not
there, same drill.

Hello,

I am having an issue where the Recover Deleted items section in outlook is
not storing e-mails that have been deleted. I checked the Exchange Server
and I have deleted items to be set to keep for seven days. I have read
articles about a registry key

Most of our Outlook clients are in cached exchange mode. If this mode
causes problems with Recover Deleted Items, then is there anyway around
 this?

 One other thing...

The nice thing about the reg hack is that if you have permissions to other
mailboxes, just enable it on your PC.

Then, you can open other mailboxes in your Outlook (Toolsemail
 accountsnextchangemore settingsadvancedadd) and recover people's
 deleted items for them.

You just need to enable this reg hack on a client that has outlook

Then, that client can recover deleted items from ANY folder, even those

Also, if you enable this reg hack today, you will still be able go back 7
 days.

DumpsterAlwaysOn is a reg setting for client machines and affects Outlook
behavior.

Enable it, restart Outlook, then try to recover something from a folder
other than Deleted Items. You should see the items that were shift+deleted.

You need the DumpsterAlwaysOn reg key on the client computer, not the server.
Once the client has that setting it can recover the items that were shift
deleted from any folder in the mailbox.

Thanks,

2008-11-13 Thread David Mazzaccaro
You just need to enable this reg hack on a client that has outlook
installed.
Then, that client can recover deleted items from ANY folder, even
those that were shift-deleted.
Also, if you enable this reg hack today, you will still be able go back
7 days.

I would like to have the recover deleted items to be able to retain
e-mails for 7 days that were deleted using SHIFT+delete. I am assuming
the reg key would fix that? I am assuming the reg key needs to be added
to the server in order to make this work?

The recover deleted items only works on items that were in the
deleted items folder.
(Unless you have the reg key on)
So you have to open the deleted items folder, then click on recover
deleted items to get back items that were in the deleted items folder
over the last 7 days.

Hello,

I am having an issue where the Recover Deleted items section in outlook
is not storing e-mails that have been deleted. I checked the Exchange
Server and I have deleted items to be set to keep for seven days. I have
read articles about a registry key for DumpsterAlwaysOn, but figured I
did not need that on the Exchange Server since I have the option to keep
deleted items for 7 days. I do not have the option selected for Do Not
Permanently delete mailboxes and items until we the store has been
backed up. Any help would be appreicated with this.

One other thing...
The nice thing about the reg hack is that if you have permissions to
other mailboxes, just enable it on your PC.
Then, you can open other mailboxes in your Outlook (Toolsemail
accountsnextchangemore settingsadvancedadd) and recover people's
deleted items for them.

If he POPped the mail off, with remove from server ON, that does not

he noticed something. After the last e-mail he received on 2/8/02 instead
of it going to 2/9/02 it went to 2/14/02. What happened to the messages
that he deleted when he was away. I need to find an answer for this. Any

Then the real question here, is if they are set to deliver mail to the

there might be a rule to move the mail, and then it would be on the person's

I need some help with a certain situation. When the COO of my company
receives mail to his corporate account after he reads the mail he deletes
it, and then at the end of the day he empties his deleted items folder. He
was on the road from 2/9/02 thru 2/13/02. He needed to recover a file from
the Deleted Items Recovery, and was exploring. He was scrolling down, when
he noticed something. After the last e-mail he received on 2/8/02 instead
of it going to 2/9/02 it went to 2/14/02. What happened to the messages
that he deleted when he was away. I need to find an answer for this. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

Okay, just figured out the problem. Needed to remember that when you delete
stuff from your deleted items, and it gets sent to the deleted item recovery
the date displayed isn't the date the message was sent, but rather the date
the message was deleted. DUH on my part.

Well, I never discovered what the problem was per say, but it went away on
it's own. I suppose I had to exit outlook and then re-open it.

Dunno though... It works now, that's all that matters.

maybe my comments should have been shorter?

Question: Since Exchange keeps messages after deleting them, BUT marks
them for deletion and hides them, can you turn DumpsterAlwaysOn after the
fact (say a user has hard deleted a ton mail accidentally), and recover
after you turn this option on for the client? In other words, can a client
access deleted items that are marked as such, and hidden if the reg entry
is done after the hard delete?

Thanks

Yes, it works that way. I just had to do this earlier this week when somebody was screwing around with there Palm and synced incorrectly. Once I added the dumpsteralwayson reghack she could retrieve her deleted items.

But the key is, I believe, how you have Exchange set for retention. I'm set to 10 days.

is it right to say that hidden/marked for deletion messages are cleared
