RE: [expert] CD burning under Mandrake 7.2 rc 1
Any other possibilities? I am going to read the man and info pages on mkisofs, but I think I need to know how it works within the program itself since I'm not calling it from the command line; does that make sense? Try and create the image manually with mkisofs and experiment with the command line options. AFAIK, the gui programs are only frontends to mkisofs and sometimes don't make use of all the options. Using the example on the cooker page is a good place to start. I routinely add -J for Windows compatability. Hoyt Thank you! I'm on it! I found the link very useful when using the NVidia drivers for my geforce2: http://games.luv.asn.au/lsd/nvidia-mini-howto.html It's written for debian, but works for mandrake if you keep in mind that debian uses different directories for their libraries. Re: [expert] Off to camp once again.
Routed uses only the RIP (or RIP2) protocol to make routing decisions, whereas gated can use a variety of routing protocols. I admin firewall gateways for an ISP, and the only real reason I use gated is to speak OSPF to our exterior routers that won't speak RIP. Personally, if you don't need anything for routing but RIP, I'd investigate routed first-- it looks much easier to configure. Now if you don't need anything but static routes, then kill 'em both and write a rc script to set routes for you. Routing protocols are designed to dynamically change routes. If you only have one route coming into your box, then you don't have (or need programs for) dynamic routing. M. Eric Mings wrote: Thanks much for the replies. Very informative and helpful. Is postfix not necessary if your are going to be getting your security checks mailed to you ? I was initially under the impression that postfix did not have to run as a daemon for this (like sendmail) but my machines with postfix only send me mail when postfix is running (as opposed to the boxes with sendmail that always send mail) Buchan Matthew Micene wrote: On Mon, 16 Oct 2000, you wrote: [all snipped Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit] My suggestions and the reasoning behind it: Kill kudzu: you most likely won't be adding hardware. If you really want to use it, start it manually before installing hardware and kill it once you are done. There is no need to daemonize it. Kill ypbind: unless for some reason this machine is a NIS client, this is not needed and a HUGE security hole. if the box IS an NIS client AND you are coloing this box, god bless and pass the ammunition. Kill portmap: unless this is an NFS server, this is another gaping hole. I personally would not colo an NFS server, way to much unsecurable traffic floating on the Internet. Kill netfs and nfslock. again, this box should not be MOUNTING partitions across the Internet on a coloed box. This is for SMB Netware and NFS mounts, NOT recommended by me. kill pcmica: this isn't a laptop, no need for it gated or routed, pick one or the other. They serve the same purpose and WILL interfere with each other. kill named, postfix, httpd, proftpd and mysql unless you have a reason for running them (ie running (in order) a DNS server, a mail server, web server, ftp server or database server or backend) kill lpd, it is HIGHLY unlikely you are going to be using a coloed box as a printserver for any reason. And I can't imagine they are going to provide access to or space for a line printer for you to dump your logs to. Kill amd, unless you need to automount local partitions on the fly there is no need for this that I can think of on a server. Webmin runs its own http daemon. If you are using this to configure and control the box remotely, make sure you have the proper ipchains rules to shutdown access to unauthorized people for this service. Otherwise, shut it off. Xfs can be removed if you are not planning on running any remote X services from the box, and can be manually started and stopped should someone log in on the console and want to start X. Or upgrade to XFree86 4.0.1 that doesn't rely on Xfs. KILL LINUXCONF! I can think of absolutely no reason why on a coloed server box you would daemonize linuxconf. Actually, I see little reason to daemonize it at all. Once you remove all the unecessary services (ie Linuxconf, ftp, telnet, whatever) make sure you go through the inetd.conf file and comment out/remove all the lines relevant to those services. The pared down list I would suggest reads like this: network random syslog gated OR routed atd crond inetd keytable local and then add whichever of the following services you MEAN to run: httpd named proftpd sshd webmin mysql postfix -- Matthew Micene Systems Development Manager Express Search Inc. www.ExpressSearch.com A host is a host from coast to coast, and no one will talk to a host too close Unless the host that isn't close is busy, hung or dead Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list. -- |--| Buchan MilneMechanical Engineer, Network Manager Cellphone +27824722231 email mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Centre for Automotive Engineering http://www.cae.co.za South Africas first satellite:http://sunsat.ee.sun.ac.za Control Models http://www.control.co.za |Registered Linux User #182071-| Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

As someone said before, have you upgraded mandrake_desk and menu before starting. when installing kdebase or any other package with an extra devel package it will say that the older kdebase-devel is dependent on it. I force the install and then install the devel package. As for the other dependency problems I found it a matter of taking note and tracking down the libs etc that were required. Look at the error messages carefully. they tell you exactly what the problem is. I've been using the latest packages from cooker on top of the 7.2 mandrake beta that had the 1.93 packages. I do agree there. I installed Helix-Gnome with no probs. I actually went to bed and in the morning, there it was with all the latest greatest of whatever it needed to make it happen. If KDE had an updater they would have a very nice package. I do however like Evolution for Gnome, as I have to use Outlook at the base here, it comes closest to it, and real conveinent. Still don't know why the packages on kde.org for Mandrake are newer time stamp, but yet older packages according to rpm. -Original Message- From: Michael Dolan [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, October 17, 2000 9:04 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [expert] Is kde2 only for mkd 7.2? this is where KDE needs a company/group like helix code. Re: [expert] udma66 htp 366 controler
You need to ensure that you are actually using dma66. You will probably see a line like the following in your /etc/lilo.conf or /boot/grub/menu.lst: ide2=0x,0x ide3=0x,0x where a ? is a hex value. This indicates that you are using the dma66 controller in backwards-compatible mode. Sorry, my instructions were aimed at improving your hdparm performance (under 7.1). Re: [expert] Errors compiling via-rhine driver
I have the same card, and never had to download any drivers. The source is already in the kernel source tree, so you can just configure a kernel with the via-rhine drivers, and build it. If you don't feel like building a kernel, mandrake's stock bootkernels come with the module as well; just load the via-rhine module with modprobe. If it doesn't give you any problems, set it up with netconf, under "Adaptor 1" (or 2, 3 or 4, if it isn't the first NIC in your box). Just choose "eth0" (or 1, 2, ...) as Net Device, and "via-rhine" as Kernel Module. This should do the trick. Good luck. If you want drivers loaded at boot time (note: this only works from certain version of initscripts, but as you say you have rc1...), just add them one per line in /etc/modules, and in the right order, first agpgart and then NVdriver. If you also want some driver to load wirth some options, add them in /etc/modules.conf as: options NVdriver agp_try_unsupported=1 If you dont want to load all the drivers at boot time, you can have you kernel to auto-load them when you access the device for the first time. It is done based in major-minor numbers of the devices, so as "when anything tries to access device with major number XX (which I know is a scsi card) load this module: x". Re: [expert] Sprint Broadband internet
First off check to see if it uses a static IP or DHCP. If it uses a static IP then you probably don't have to do anything more than setting up your ethernet card with the proper masks and such. If it uses DHCP you might need to use an assigned hostname to make it work. Try asking on your local linux group if they have a mailing list. Often somebody locally has already tried it. :) *^*^*^* Have the courage to take your own thoughts seriously, for they will shape you. -- Albert Einstein On Tue, 17 Oct 2000, Sridhar Govindarajulu wrote: Hi, I am trying to install Sprint Broadband internet access. Re: [expert] Sprint Broadband internet
Assuming you have no other ethernet cards installed in your computer, and the (cable modem?) (DSL thingy?) (Satellite dish?) connects to your network card, try the following: dhcpcd eth0 That runs "DHCP Client Daemon" and tells it to try connecting to a DHCP server (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol; what many ISPs use to assign semi-random, arbitrary IPs to arbitrary computers) through the 0th (1st) ethernet card. If you have other ethernet cards, pass the one connected to SprintHighSpeedSomething to dhcpcd; e.g., "dhcpcd eth1". This will work if (and only if) your ISP uses DHCP to set up its hosts. The basic question to find this out is, Did the Sprint people want to install any Windows software? If they did install some, then it might be PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol (what most phone-line ISPs use) over Ethernet). Anyway, try DHCP. It might work, and if not, no harm done. Hi!, my exact purpose is to use a computer to access internet in a public place. As you can imagine, security problems arise when planning to do something like this, beside I'm a Linux fanatic I MUST use Linux for this. This is what I already have and where I need some explanations. I'm planning to use WindowMaker, since this is the window enviroment where I can customize more things, so I already have a very limited system where you can only run Netscape or any other navigator. The only problem I've found is that if you use right button on the window title you can edit the window's properties, and that also happend on the dock aplication. Is it posible to ignore right button? I'm planning to use Galeon as Navigator, but I'm still testing, nothing have arise yet. Next thing, I'd like that on Linux boot, a X console appears with a 'default' user logged in, better that any kind of login nor password. I'd try to disable Ctrl+Alt keys and let then be used only when configuring the box. Some clue? I know something is possible since Mandrake instalation makes something similar, but of course, I won't like to boot on single user mode, since the 'default user' would have root privileges and that's not a good idea in a public place. [expert] SMC Ethernet Adapter-USB-Not really a linux question but...
This is not really a linux question, but... I have a linux box, a bsd box and a win box(both 98 and Win2k)...for the winbox I have a SMC USB Ethernet adapter. I've been messing with my LAN for about 8 hours now and am positive that everything is configured correctly, as a matter of fact, by the books. The winbox cannot be seen nor can it see anything else on the LAN. I thought perhaps it might be a cracked wire somewhere along the cable or a mis-wired wallbox, but I've checked it and everything is literally straight cable...no accidental crossovers. I used a multi-tester and check the wires in pairs and everything is A-OK electro-mechanically. I'm guessing there is some issue with the SMC converters that prevents them from being connected into a hub...I really don't think there should be, but as it was supplied by @home, I didn't get a manual or other info with it, nor have I yet located a support or FAQ site. There is no RTFM here...does anyone have any experience with this sort of adapter? It can't be windows or linux and the bsd machine isn't even connected. each machine is uniquely addressed is able to ping itself, but the winmachine just doesn't wanna play with the big boys...please any assisstance would be appreciated with this converter. Another problem I'm having (possibly related?) is that when I restart the machine, I can connect to it with ping, HTTP, SSH, etc for a period of time (longer than a few minutes, less than 12 hrs), after which the machine does not seem to exist at all on the net. You must think that you will have some pretty linux savey public users. Just an opinion, but since most of the public users say to a library or school will be windows users, wouldn't a more windows like interface work better. Why not use KDE, remove the logout button from the panel. In most public libraries and such, the staff turn everything on and login prior to opening, at least they do here. Set up an account for public use. Use Netscape as most would be familiar with it for internet. Set it up to start in X then edit the login manager to only show the one account.
