RE: [expert] CD burning under Mandrake 7.2 rc 1

2000-10-17 Thread Mike Tracy Holt

Any other possibilities? I am going to read
the man and info pages on mkisofs, but I think I need to know
how it works
 within the program itself since I'm not calling it from the command line;
 does that make sense?

Try and create the image manually with mkisofs and experiment with the
command line options. AFAIK, the gui programs are only frontends to mkisofs
and sometimes don't make use of all the options. Using the example on the
cooker page is a good place to start. I routinely add -J for Windows
compatability.

Hoyt

Thank you! I'm on it!

I found the link very useful when using the NVidia drivers for my geforce2:

   http://games.luv.asn.au/lsd/nvidia-mini-howto.html

It's written for debian, but works for mandrake if you keep in mind that
debian uses different directories for their libraries.

You did remove the Mesa libraries manually, right?

In /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i686 you'll find the binaries. Install them. In your

When you install a new kernel, you'll have to rebuild the NVIDIA_kernel

Re: [expert] Off to camp once again.

Routed uses only the RIP (or RIP2) protocol to make routing decisions,
whereas gated can use a variety of routing protocols. I admin firewall
gateways for an ISP, and the only real reason I use gated is to speak
OSPF to our exterior routers that won't speak RIP.

Personally, if you don't need anything for routing but RIP, I'd
investigate routed first-- it looks much easier to configure. Now if you
don't need anything but static routes, then kill 'em both and write a rc
script to set routes for you. Routing protocols are designed to
dynamically change routes. If you only have one route coming into your
box, then you don't have (or need programs for) dynamic routing.

My suggestions and the reasoning behind it:
Kill kudzu: you most likely won't be adding hardware. If you really want
to use it, start it manually before installing hardware and kill
it once you are done. There is no need to daemonize it.

Kill ypbind: unless for some reason this machine is a NIS client, this
is not needed and a HUGE security hole. if the box IS an NIS client AND
you are coloing this box, god bless and pass the ammunition.

Kill portmap: unless this is an NFS server, this is another gaping hole.
I personally would not colo an NFS server, way to much unsecurable
 traffic floating on the Internet.

Kill netfs and nfslock. again, this box should not be MOUNTING
partitions across the Internet on a coloed box. This is for SMB Netware
and NFS mounts, NOT recommended by me.

kill pcmica: this isn't a laptop, no need for it

gated or routed, pick one or the other. They serve the same purpose and
 WILL interfere with each other.

kill named, postfix, httpd, proftpd and mysql unless you have a reason
for running them (ie running (in order) a DNS server, a mail server, web
server, ftp server or database server or backend)

kill lpd, it is HIGHLY unlikely you are going to be using a coloed box as
a printserver for any reason. And I can't imagine they are going to
provide access to or space for a line printer for you to dump your logs to.

Kill amd, unless you need to automount local partitions on the fly there
is no need for this that I can think of on a server.

Webmin runs its own http daemon. If you are using this to configure and
control the box remotely, make sure you have the proper ipchains rules to
shutdown access to unauthorized people for this service. Otherwise, shut
 it off.

Xfs can be removed if you are not planning on running any remote X
services from the box, and can be manually started and stopped should
someone log in on the console and want to start X. Or upgrade to XFree86
4.0.1 that doesn't rely on Xfs.

KILL LINUXCONF! I can think of absolutely no reason why on a coloed
server box you would daemonize linuxconf. Actually, I see little reason
 to daemonize it at all.

Once you remove all the unecessary services (ie Linuxconf, ftp, telnet,
whatever) make sure you go through the inetd.conf file and comment
out/remove all the lines relevant to those services.

The pared down list I would suggest reads like this:
 network
 random
 syslog
 gated OR routed
 atd
 crond
 inetd
 keytable
 local

and then add whichever of the following services you MEAN to run:
 httpd
 named
 proftpd
 sshd
 webmin
 mysql
 postfix

Dunno, but I am going to reinstall 7.1 on my system since trying to get kde2 to work

rc2 version and mandrake packages were there and they are all date stamped 10/13
however the packages wont install since I installed the ones from cooker

Cooker dates are 10/6 and 10/10 it seems. How could these files be a higher rev
package when they are date stamped earlier ??
Maybe it is time to install RH on my primary machine, it is on my secondary machine
with no probs then again, i dont install many things on it either cause I do like

Re: [expert] Is kde2 only for mkd 7.2?

2000-10-17 Thread GrAnT GaLbRaiTh

As someone said before, have you upgraded mandrake_desk and menu before
starting. when installing kdebase or any other package with an extra devel
package it will say that the older kdebase-devel is dependent on it. I force
the install and then install the devel package. As for the other dependency
problems I found it a matter of taking note and tracking down the libs etc
that were required. Look at the error messages carefully. they tell you
exactly what the problem is.
I've been using the latest packages from cooker on top of the 7.2 mandrake
beta that had the 1.93 packages. After a lot of fiddling and dowloading extra
little bits it has all been worth it.

My system is very stable and I haven't enjoyed myself so much in years

Keep persevering, its worth it

[expert] udma66 htp 366 controler

2000-10-17 Thread Pascal Grossé

Dear people,

I tried to install Mdk 7.2 rc1 on my new computer, with a IBM 15 go HD on
a htp 366 controler (udma66 hd). The boot kernel recognized the controler,
but the computer froze during the partition check (more or less, the
freeze point is not constant). Has someone managed to install Mdk 7.2 with
such a controller ?
W.s 98 does work, as did Mdk 7.1. But linux didn't work very well.
hdparm -t /dev/hde gave me 2.8 mb/s, which is quite slow even without 32
bit access. I suspect a hardware failure.

Any ideas ?

Pascal Grosse

P.S. SuSE Linux 7.0 fail also to work well with the controler.

I do agree there. I installed Helix-Gnome with no probs.
I actually went to bed and in the morning, there it was
with all the latest greatest of whatever it needed to make
it happen. If KDE had an updater they would have a very nice
package. I do however like Evolution for Gnome, as I have to
use Outlook at the base here, it comes closest to it, and real
conveinent. Still don't know why the packages on kde.org for
Mandrake are newer time stamp, but yet older packages according

You need to ensure that you are actually using dma66. You will probably
see a line like the following in your /etc/lilo.conf or
/boot/grub/menu.lst:
ide2=0x,0x ide3=0x,0x where a ? is a hex value. This
indicates that you are using the dma66 controller in
backwards-compatible mode. What you need to do is change it to read:

ide2=dma ide3=dma
(do this in a new lilo/grub entry, because if it doesn't work, you might
have problems).

Sorry, my instructions were aimed at improving your hdparm performance
(under 7.1).

You should be able to install on udma33, then make changes to your

the patches are applied to the stock kernel).

Unfortunately I can't tell you much about 7.2 as I am still waiting for

netcard is in the motherboard? Has anyone had success in using the builtin
card? For the time being I can get by with the PCMCIA card but I will
  eventually have to ditch it.

- Has anyone managed to make the internal modem work? It's a winmodem. I
trid to use the lucent module but when I dial and it tries to connect, I

- I managed to make the audio subsytem work by using the ALSA drivers.
Unfortunately, if I suspend the system, when I restart it the whole audio
subsytem is gone. The modules are still loaded but I can't get any sound
to work. Any one know how to fix this problem?

- Another problem with the audio stuffis that sometimes when I boot, the

have to turn it off and try again and that usually fixes it. I'm not sure
if the problem happens only when I warm reboot the system or if it also
happens on a cold reboot. Anyone else see this?

- Speaking of suspending the system: how do you do that? If I try to use the
  keyboard, I get this error:

I get similar event queue overflowed errors when I close the cover. The
only way I've found to suspend the system is to KILL -HUP the apmd
process. I *know* there has to be a better way. Any ideas?

Well, I figure that's enough for now.

Thanks,

One other thing: are you doing this as root before starting X?

 rmmod agpgart
 modprobe agpgart agp_try_unsupported=1
 modprobe NVdriver

I really have to learn how to have the computer do this automatically...

If you want drivers loaded at boot time (note: this only works from certain
version of initscripts, but as you say you have rc1...), just add them one
per line in /etc/modules, and in the right order, first agpgart and then
NVdriver.

If you also want some driver to load wirth some options, add them in
/etc/modules.conf as:

options NVdriver agp_try_unsupported=1

If you dont want to load all the drivers at boot time, you can have you
kernel
to auto-load them when you access the device for the first time. It is done
based in major-minor numbers of the devices, so as "when anything tries to
access
device with major number XX (which I know is a scsi card) load this module:
x".

For the nVidia drivers, that "magic numbber" is 195.
So add in your /etc/modules.conf a line such as:

alias char-major-195 NVdriver

Hope this helps you...

Re: [expert] Errors compiling via-rhine driver

2000-10-17 Thread Rial Juan

I have the same card, and never had to download any drivers. The
source is already in the kernel source tree, so you can just configure
a kernel with the via-rhine drivers, and build it. If you don't feel
like building a kernel, mandrake's stock bootkernels come with the
module as well; just load the via-rhine module with modprobe. If it
doesn't give you any problems, set it up with netconf, under "Adaptor
1" (or 2, 3 or 4, if it isn't the first NIC in your box). Just choose
"eth0" (or 1, 2, ...) as Net Device, and "via-rhine" as Kernel
Module. This should do the trick.

Good luck.

Reading /usr/src/linux/Documentation/usb/ov511.txt, the appropiate major is

just with:

alias char-major-81 ov511

that wil load ov511 when any app (xawtv?) access /dev/video.

I don't know how to deal with various video devices, you will need to configure
the driver load by major and minor or by device /dev/videoX...
Depending on module dependencies, you will need to load at boot other modules.

Following ov511.txt, more info at http://alpha.dyndns.org/ov511.

Re: [expert] Sprint Broadband internet

2000-10-17 Thread Michael

First off check to see if it uses a static IP or DHCP. If it uses a static
IP then you probably don't have to do anything more than setting up your
ethernet card with the proper masks and such. If it uses DHCP you might
need to use an assigned hostname to make it work. Try asking on your local
linux group if they have a mailing list. Often somebody locally has
already tried it. :)

Re: [expert] Sprint Broadband internet

2000-10-17 Thread Asheesh Laroia

Assuming you have no other ethernet cards installed in your computer, and
the (cable modem?) (DSL thingy?) (Satellite dish?) connects to your
network card, try the following:

dhcpcd eth0

That runs "DHCP Client Daemon" and tells it to try connecting to a DHCP
server (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol; what many ISPs use to assign
semi-random, arbitrary IPs to arbitrary computers) through the 0th
(1st) ethernet card.

If you have other ethernet cards, pass the one connected to
SprintHighSpeedSomething to dhcpcd; e.g., "dhcpcd eth1".

This will work if (and only if) your ISP uses DHCP to set up its
hosts. The basic question to find this out is, Did the Sprint people
want to install any Windows software? If they did install some, then it
might be PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol (what most phone-line ISPs
use) over Ethernet).

Anyway, try DHCP. It might work, and if not, no harm done.

Best of luck.

[expert] Help Wanted!: building a Internet-Box

2000-10-17 Thread José Antonio Jiménez Berni

Hi!, my exact purpose is to use a computer to access internet in a
public place. As you can imagine, security problems arise when planning
to do something like this, beside I'm a Linux fanatic I MUST use
Linux for this.
This is what I already have and where I need some explanations.

I'm planning to use WindowMaker, since this is the window enviroment
where I can customize more things, so I already have a very limited
system where you can only run Netscape or any other navigator. The only
problem I've found is that if you use right button on the window title
you can edit the window's properties, and that also happend on the dock
aplication. Is it posible to ignore right button?
I'm planning to use Galeon as Navigator, but I'm still testing, nothing
have arise yet.
Next thing, I'd like that on Linux boot, a X console appears with a
'default' user logged in, better that any kind of login nor password.
I'd try to disable Ctrl+Alt keys and let then be used only when
configuring the box. Some clue? I know something is possible since
Mandrake instalation makes something similar, but of course, I won't
like to boot on single user mode, since the 'default user' would have
root privileges and that's not a good idea in a public place.

I know i'm just on my firt steps with this 'project' but I'd like to
beat those people who defend a Micro$oft solution for this idea.

Thanks in advance. Berni.

[expert] SMC Ethernet Adapter-USB-Not really a linux question but...

2000-10-17 Thread Logos

This is not really a linux question, but...

I have a linux box, a bsd box and a win box(both 98 and Win2k)...for the winbox
I have a SMC USB Ethernet adapter. I've been messing with my LAN for about 8
hours now and am positive that everything is configured correctly, as a matter
of fact, by the books. The winbox cannot be seen nor can it see anything else
on the LAN. I thought perhaps it might be a cracked wire somewhere along the
cable or a mis-wired wallbox, but I've checked it and everything is literally
straight cable...no accidental crossovers. I used a multi-tester and check the
wires in pairs and everything is A-OK electro-mechanically. I'm guessing there
is some issue with the SMC converters that prevents them from being connected
into a hub...I really don't think there should be, but as it was supplied by
@home, I didn't get a manual or other info with it, nor have I yet located a
support or FAQ site. There is no RTFM here...does anyone have any experience
with this sort of adapter? It can't be windows or linux and the bsd machine
isn't even connected. each machine is uniquely addressed is able to ping
itself, but the winmachine just doesn't wanna play with the big boys...please
any assisstance would be appreciated with this converter. All I want is one good
ping to and from this machine and the rest is academic.

chgrp /home/penguin/pub

5. In /etc/ftpaccess added "guestuser penguin"

and this, according the the redhat linux bible and other wu-docs, is supposed to
create a usable guest user for ftp services only. But where does /etc/ftponly

GrAnT GaLbRaiTh have writen a interesting mail. Ok, but you have installed the mdk 7.2
beta, and I not. It's not the same version.
However, I will try to force to install it, and trace all the dependencies.

And in another mail, Alexander Skwar said:

So? You want the latest, you need to install the latest. Those
dependencies are in there for a reason!

I don't think that it's a correct position. With Gnome it was very easy (more or less)
to
install it. Why not with kde? There are a lot of differences between rpm 3.05 and the
package of the mdk 7.1??

Well, I finish, thanks to all for all the messages. I would like that the mandrake team
pay attention in this class of things.

Best regards,

Leo

So. . . . .

Get the newest bzip2-* packages from cooker.
Get the newest menu* packages from cooker.
Get the newest rpm-* packages from cooker.
Gather up all your KDE rpms.

Then. . . .

rpm -Uvh bzip2-* rpm-* menu*

(You might need to make a symbolic link to "libbz2.so.1" called
"libbz2.so.0" in /usr/lib to satisfy other prgrams. If other packages
complain about that, just use the "--nodeps" flag.)

Then . . . .

Install those KDE packages using "rpm -Uvh". Might take some time.

Better solution, if you have a broadband net connection (or if you trust
your current one for a night's downloading):

Get the newest MandrakeUpdate from cooker. Install it, and all its
dependencies. Then set it to make your machine run cooker. You'll have a
blast. I'm doing so right now from 7.2 beta2.

Best of luck.

You should also be able to install Linux directly to the UDMA66 drive.

the patches are applied to the stock kernel).

Unfortunately I can't tell you much about 7.2 as I am still waiting for

Re: [expert] ssh

2000-10-17 Thread Praedor Tempus

I have openssh-2.2.0p1-6mdk installed and the daemon running.
If I try to ssh to my own box, "ssh -l praedor 10.0.0.5", it
connects and asks for my password. I enter my entirely correct
and valid password but then get the message:

"Permission denied, please try again."

Connecting from school results in the same thing. I can
connect, no problem, with ftp. What am I missing here?

ssh is a secured communications protocol that functions largely as a drop-in
replacement for telnet. You need the client program (ssh) to communicate to the
 server program (sshd).

The client program should work pretty much out of the box without any
additional configuration. Just connect to the server you want to work on with a
 command like this:

ssh -l username server.name

[expert] Strange firewall(?) problems

2000-10-17 Thread Peter Loron

I recently switched internet providers, and as a consequence had to update
the network info on my Mandrake 6.1 (kernel 2.2.17, SMP) box I use as a
firewall/ ip masq server. What I'm seeing is a log message in
/var/log/messages that occurs every few minutes (the interval is not
precise), which is a denied packet from 127.0.0.1:2301 to
255.255.255.255:2301. Unfortunately I don't have the exact error in front of
me (not at the machine and I can't find my written example). I did a bit of
digging on the net and the only references I could find to port 2301 is to a
Compaq service for it's NT servers. Since this problem occurs even when my
Windows box is powered down, I don't think that is the culprit.

Another problem I'm having (possibly related?) is that when I restart the
machine, I can connect to it with ping, HTTP, SSH, etc for a period of time
(longer than a few minutes, less than 12 hrs), after which the machine does
not seem to exist at all on the net. I'm not seeing anything that looks
suspicious in /var/log/messages or secure.

Any ideas? Suggestions? Thanks.

-Pete

Re: [expert] Strange firewall(?) problems

2000-10-17 Thread Greg Stewart

Does your machine happen to be a an ISP using Compaq servers booting with
the system configuration utility startup routine?

How is your firewall setup? Do you have pmfirewall installed to set up your
ipchains rules? Or, have you created rules to block 127.0.0.0 from the
external interface/remote-network?

Do your ipchains rules now reflect the updated network info?

It sounds like a misconfiguration--this one again--but I'm not sure it's
necessarily yours.

Send me the packet log entry(ies) when you get the chance, will ya? :-)

Re: [expert] Help Wanted!: building a Internet-Box

2000-10-17 Thread Ron Marriage

You must think that you will have some pretty linux savey
public users. Just an opinion, but since most of the
public users say to a library or school will be windows
users, wouldn't a more windows like interface work better.

Why not use KDE, remove the logout button from the panel.
In most public libraries and such, the staff turn
everything on and login prior to opening, at least they do
here. Set up an account for public use. Use Netscape as
most would be familiar with it for internet.

Set it up to start in X then edit the login manager to only
show the one account. This way if someone does manage to
logout of X, they only have the one option.

You can edit the keymap to elimenate any specific key
combinations that you want.

Hi!, my exact purpose is to use a computer to access internet in a

to do something like this, beside I'm a Linux fanatic I MUST use

Berni.
