So does this mean that the next ver of Mandrake will install on my AMDK6-400 without any trouble just like 7.2 ? If not I will be VERY upset On Friday 30 March 2001 12:51 am, so spoke David Rankin: "Jose M. Sanchez" wrote: To begin with, this is not a Mandrake issue, it's a Linux issue. The K6 can execute i686 code, just not optimally for the processor. With the Kernel it's another matter altogether... The MTRR register differences PREVENTs the i686 compiled kernel to operate on a K6 afaik. When I tried it I got an kernel which would not fully init... That plus the byte alignment optimzations for the 686, make the i586 distro better for the K6 in terms of speed and compatibility. It's not a question of making the i686 distro, "properly" identify the k6... LINUX (as directed by Linus) "properly" identifies the K6 characteristics and classifies it as a i585 for optimal operation... There was quite an extensive thread about this some time ago in the kernel forums... It's also doubtful that MANDRAKE will alienate it's prospective clients. I wouldn't doubt that what they'll resort to doing is producing a common distro that installs a i586 kernel with i686 code RPM's... albeit with a slight loss of performance over i586 optimizations or a seperate i586 distro, as they've done for the i486. Given the perponderance of AMD's though, I'll bet they will choose the former as it makes good marketing sense... It would be pretty easy to implement in an installer... they already do this for SMP installations anyway... -JMS [EMAIL PROTECTED] Well put Jose! I hope we see something like this come from Linus. Re: [expert] Lost sight of point (was: WAIT!! STOP!!...)
The one thing that I'm noticing throughout this particular discussion is that everyone is blaming Mandrake and not looking at the fact that the K6-2 and K6-3 are actually i586 chips. How can Mandrake make their distribution recognize the K6 series as i686 chips when they will just cough and sputter dring bootup it you try to run i686 optimized code on them. This isn't Mandrake's problem. I would like to see Mandrake continue to bundle the i586 RPMs into the distribution to retain some backward compatability, just because I also run Mandrake on an old P233 that I have. But my primary machine is an AMD Duron 600, which will make use of this new optimized code with no problems. So I woudliek to see the benefits of theenhanced speed as well as the ability to keep running the latest distributions on my 233. Thanks "Jose M. The good news is that I do not need "rescue" now, but I do need to learn how to use it! Have you made a boot floppy? This is even better than a rescue disk, as its the same kernel you installed on your machine. However, I agree its disconcerting that you cannot get rescue to work. I do have an idea or two (but they may be worth what you paid for them ;-) When the machine is booted normally it needs the aic7xxx module to see the scsi drive. I have tried: modprobe aic7xxx lsmod tells me that the reiserfs, aic7xxx, and scsi_mod are loaded. Reiserfs is unused. scsi_mod used by aic7xxx aic7xxx unused So far so good, I think. When I give the command: mount -t reiserfs /dev/sda1 /mnt I get the "-- help screen" and the message: mount: The kernel does not recognize /dev/sda1 as a block device. (maybe `insmod driver') if you say 'ls -l /dev/sda1' what does it say? Compare that to what you get when booted normally. (I'm grasping at straws here, but sometimes you really want to leave no stone unturned) ... I have also tried starting in "expert" mode then switching to the shell. I'd be surprised if that made a difference. Now, you MIGHT try starting an install and getting to the fdisk part and mucking around in the shell, but thats a real pain, as you usually end up having to mknod for everything you want, and things don't work exactly like normal, and you MUST remember to unmount everything you mounted or it will be dirty on reboot. Altogether not a fun thing to fool with! (But you might want to get to that just to see if you CAN manage to mount reiserfs, if all else fails). In any case, like I said at the start, getting a boot floppy made would be a first priority, and check it to be sure it works. If you are truly paranoid, make a copy by dd if=/dev/fd0 of=/where/I/keep/floppy/images/myboot.img, put new blank floppy in dd if=/where/I/keep/floppy/images/myboot.img of=/dev/fd0 and keep it 'offsite'. And *don't* forget to write protect that floppy! (Oh, and check the copy to make sure it works too!) rc p.s. an advantage of this copy method is you always have a copy of that floppy on (hard) disk. The truly paranoid would also put a copy of that image on all other machines they work with (does no good to have a copy of the boot disk you need on the machine that you cannot boot!) Re: [expert] 8.0b2 $HOME/.bash_profile no being read
I ended up putting 'echo "My PID: $$" /tmp/etc_profile.trace' into /etc/profile and then using kdm and gdm to login. kdm never executes /etc/profile or ${HOME}/.bash_profile. gdm, on the other hand, executes it two times. Once when the bash shell is started and then again when it changes over to gnome-session. I have modified /etc/bashrc and /etc/profile to fix this problem and included the patch at the end. I was not sure why /etc/bashrc is unsetting PROFILE_LOADED. If it is known, then /etc/profile does not need to be run again at all in that process. I also exported it in /etc/profile but that is because there do not seem to be any dependencies on non-exported environment variables in the standard /etc/profile. If there are, then that part of the patch is incorrect and will break things. I do not think this is the correct solution for gdm, but it was quick and easy and I do not know where gnome-session is being exec'ed. If someone would be nice enough to point me in the right direction, I will fix this properly and should be able to deduce the correct solution for kdm as well. Just of the file is: 'service: source', where service is the service you are offering (ftp, telnet, sshd, etc) and source is the ip/domain/etc. There is also the keyword 'ALL'. First suggestion to see if this is your problem is to comment out all lines in hosts.deny and hosts.allow, then add to hosts.allow 'ALL: ALL'. This will allow connections from any host to any service. NOTE: you do NOT want to leave your machine like this -- its just an easy way to see if the problem lies in these files. If that fixes your problem, then add the appropriate directives to these files (say 'ftp: localhost 192.168.1.' for allowing connections from localhost and 129.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 -- again, see the man page for more details). I believe that Linux will not succeed until some steps are taken to limit it's diversity. 'Scuse the rant Regards, Colin H. Close "It needs to be simpler, but limiting choice isn't the way to do it," said a certain linux CEO. I have to agree from my own feelings. Having the choices is what linux is all about. For example, most developers believe strongly in free software, so strongly that soon you will see Netscape disappear from the downloadable distro, and you will not see new software added to the downloadables that have license problems. We are hoping some free browser will soon be able to provide equal functionality, and when it does But does that mean you cannot use non-free software with the distro? Not at all. You can rpm the NVidia 3D accelerator right off our CD of commercial software in the release that's being prepared, because we want you to be free to choose, even if you choose non-free software. On the other hand, we certainly are not going to promote it and we will continue to solicit your support to write to NVidia and ask them to change their policy so we can really support the card. But there is a distro, selling rather poorly, which has a single desktop. And there is another, which used to be around, that took the desktop in its own direction and did not share back the results, with a resulting "niceness" for the user that slammed into a dead end when the desktop was enhanced by the desktop makers. And there is a third distro that has a single desktop which is available. It does not have much of a following, and it has problems staying current without the resources needed to do so, but it is available in a very small size, comparatively speaking, about 150Mb. We are doing a balancing act between free software and the need to pay internet fees and employees and give investors returns on their dollars. We see that those who have limited choice, with the exception of a predatory company like Microsoft, which filled a gap that does not now exist, just haven't done well at all in customer satisfaction and sales. (And Microsoft has done well only in sales, I believe. I have never met a happy Microsoft customer, and only one system administrator who thought it was great.) Well, we want to listen to our customers. If you find a few people who want a simple distro, simple in terms of pre-chosen software, we can make a couple and probably even keep them reasonably updated, as subsets of our main distro. In the new release, the customer can roll his own. If he wants a KDE Desktop, he can have it. If he wants GNOME, he can have it. If he wants to change to a different menu structure (mostly for GNOME), he can do that. If he wants only a server; it works, though it may install a minimal graphical desktop. But the problem for the customer remains--choices are not made for him. I think that "problem" is permanent with this distro. It is part of the culture of this effort. As for simplicity, and examples... That is what mandrakecampus and mandrakeexert are supposed to be about. put a www before and a com after, and check them out--still in formative stages. Civileme Hi Civeleme, Thanks for your well considered reply I hope the thread hasn't gone dead (I've been away a week). I must admit that the line between free software and "open sources" is an important one and I have no hesitancy in supporting the view of those generous individuals who give their time and intellectual capacity to provide all of us with intelligent and diverse software. I must though question the wisdom of removing Netscape from the next distro is this being done for legal or philosophical reasons? I remember seeing the quote and the article from the "certain Linux CEO" but I don't recall how things were going to be made simpler; however I do see that Mandrake in the upcoming release have appreciated the need for a more "customisable" approach which will certainly make things more efficient for the moderately informed user. It may be that this is where the answer lies, that is in the install process: I agree that the "roll your own" approach is sound since it allows the size and functionality of the OS to be chosen to meet the requirement thus maintaining the "choice" philosophy but, as you quite rightly point out is that he user has to make the choices. As part of my job I have to write operating maintainence manuals for health physics equipment and when I do this I have to constantly remind myself that the people I am addressing may not know as much of the subject and equipment as I do.

Re: [expert] Lost sight of point (was: WAIT!! STOP!!...)
Sorry, Civilme. I should have clarified a letter better with my position. So far, I've had no problems with Cooker. The problem is MandrakeFreq. By grabbing the "unsupported" directory without filtering for i586 binaries, I'm prevented from updating my 7.2 installation to the latest "mostly stable" version of Linux-Mandrake. Specifically, the following packages remain as i686... mozilla-0.8-1mdk.i686.rpm mozilla-irc-0.8-1mdk.i686.rpm mozilla-mail-0.8-1mdk.i686.rpm mozilla-psm-0.8-1mdk.i686.rpm And if the pattern were repeated with what has currently been included in "unsupported", the following packages are likely to appear... asteroids3D-0.2.2-3mdk.i686.rpm audiofile-0.1.11-6mdk.i686.rpm centericq-3.20.5-1mdk.i686.rpm esound-0.2.22-2mdk.i686.rpm gkrellm-1.0.6-1mdk.i686.rpm gkrellm-devel-1.0.6-1mdk.i686.rpm gkrellm-plugins-1.0.6-1mdk.i686.rpm openssl-devel-0.9.6-5mdk.i686.rpm gnorpm-0.95.1-3mdk.i686.rpm libaudiofile0-0.1.11-6mdk.i686.rpm libaudiofile0-devel-0.1.11-6mdk.i686.rpm libesound0-0.2.22-2mdk.i686.rpm libesound0-devel-0.2.22-2mdk.i686.rpm liboaf0-0.6.3-1mdk.i686.rpm liboaf0-devel-0.6.3-1mdk.i686.rpm openssl-0.9.6-5mdk.i686.rpm tripwire-2.3.0-1mdk.i686.rpm wine-20001202-1mdk.i686.rpm wine-devel-20001202-1mdk.i686.rpm xmms-alarm-0.2.2-2mdk.i686.rpm xmms-gdancer-0.2.0-4mdk.i686.rpm xmms-status-plugin-0.5-2mdk.i686.rpm Is there any chance Mandrakesoft can make a policy where i686 binaries are turned down for inclusion in the unsupported mirrors? Perhaps with a boilerplate set of instructions for generating i586 binary packages (or URL to such). The i586 code works best with the K6, etc. Jose, what will happen when the next full release of Mandrake appears? Will it install without complaint on the millions of K6-2s out there? Will there be 2 standard new releases, LM 8.x_i686 and LM8.x_i586? Will continued support of the K6-2 just be dropped? -- OR -- Will the core of the i686 install be made the properly recognize the K6-2. --OR-- Is there really a bit offset discrepancy that prevents the K6-2 from truly being included in the i686 frenzy? The foregoing is "the point" and it is a "worry" to a lot of people that rests on "solid" ground. -- David Rankin Nacogdoches, Texas All of this is quite pointless. We have made no 686-specific binaries. The binaries labeled 686 are so labeled because they are made with a 686 and NOT because there were compiler flag settings for the 686. Try it yourself, take any src.rpm, install it and rpm --rebuild *src.rpm and if your processor is a 686 you get a package that SAYS i686 in the label, but the compiler flags are unchanged unless you override them, so the package is still a 586 compatible. But FYI, here is a listing of the packages on the 8.0 beta disk number 2. Let me point out once more that our tests on compiling for architectures in the x86 family indicate that _usually_ the best one for performance is the 586 code. Whether this is a compiler limitation or whether the CPU manufacturers add worthless instructions to the set to sell more "advanced" processors is a moot point. It is difficult at this time to justify compiling for any more advanced processor than the 586, and there are many cases where 686-specific code will SLOW DOWN program execution. [expert] XEmacs/Gnus error
Hi, Since Mandrake 7.1 (I'm using 7.2 now) I've had a problem using Gnus with XEmacs. The second time starting up Gnus, XEmacs reports a "Wrong type argument: chararcterp, 116" error and Gnus fails to start. Closing XEMacs, deleteing ~/.newsrc.eld, and restarting XEmacs enables Gnus to start successfully again; but the next time I close and reopen Gnus it will again fail with the same error. There seems to be some problem in reading the ~/.newsrc.eld file. Someone on the Gnus mailing list suggested that this problem occurs when Gnus is byte-compiled with Emacs but run under XEmacs. Does anyone know if this is the case in Mandrake 7.2? Has anyone else had this poblem? Thanks in advance, ~Avdi
Re: [expert] anyone working enlightenment installation in 8.0b2
I loaded enlightenment in 8.02b just fine. I did notice the lack of menu generation on the left button, but you can still access the application menu via the middle button (or 2+3). Al --- Al Niessner [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have found the enlightenment installation in 8.0b2 to be lacking in all respects. I have noticed that some features are missing from the "standard" enlightenment toolkit like menu regeneration. Then, when new users select enlightenment, they get no menus to start with -- used to get links to gnome and kde programs etc. When I ran e_gen_menu by hand (missing menu regeneration as stated earlier) it failed miserably with all kinds of errors. So, is anyone at Mandrake working this? The reason I ask, if you are not, then I will then send you the updates. If you are, could I get a patch? I hate duplicating effort. Al __ Do You Yahoo!?
