Try using ext3 as your journaling filesystem. It has the exact same specs as
ext2 with journaling as an additional layer, so I'm assuming that ghost will
treat it as ext2 and copy it as such.

I haven't used the latest version, so others can correct me if I'm wrong, but
originally, you could mount the same fs as ext2 or ext3 and it would work
either way, back and forth, with no problems.

[expert] pine error 550 relay....

2001-09-30 Thread Mike & Tracy Holt

hh!!

I know I've been able set this up before - what the heck am I doing
wrong now???

I'll back up; I'm trying to setup pine on my linux box (mdk 8.1) and
I've got fetchmail getting the mail just fine. When I try to send
however, I get the error listed in my subject line (or something to that
effect) and I can also see that it's adding my useraccount@my
computername.etc and I'm using verizon dsl which requires that that
says my verizon account ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and I cannot figure out how
to get it into pine. I've tried setting it up in my .pinerc, etc. but
to no avail.

Can someone please tell me how to send mail with pine without having to
use sendmail?

i'm curious...why would the 1024 cylinder have anything at all to do
with an 8.1 install? that was something specific to the old LILO boot
loader. since the newer versions of LILO no longer suffer from this
problem i fail to see how this would apply.

One word: wait.

I've removed the 7.x apache updates from the FTP sites so unless you
have them sitting somewhere locally, you shouldn't be able to use
them. I also do not suggest you do so if you do have them locally.

Wait for a proper update. RSN.

See the Freezer Burn page noted above... should be about all you need.

Be warned that djbdns is *very* different from bind so if you don't
have time time/patience to learn a very different system, you may want

I'm currently using the EPOX 8KTA3 motherboard along with a 256MB PC133
stick of SDRAM and a 1Ghz Athlon with a "266 MHz" bus.

The board has six (!) PCI slots, an AGP slot, onboard ATA/100, an ISA
slot (remember those?), four USB connectors, onboard AC97 sound (that I
don't use; my SoundBlaster PCI128 does four-speaker support. It also has
a set of diagnostic LEDs that give information if the machine does not
start, cannot detect a video card, etc. It supports 1.5GB of RAM. (Yum)

I like it.

[expert] setting up new linux workstations

2001-09-30 Thread Steve

If you were asked by someone to build two linux workstations where one
had to be pentium 4 based and the other athlon based, what two
motherboards would you use?

For the pentium 4, I was considering the Abit TH7II-Raid (i850 chipset).
I am not for certain if there are any known issues with mandrake 8.1
and the i850 chipset. From what I have read I think it will run fine.

For the Athlon, I am unsure which board to use. Which board does not
have any known problems? I know some VIA chipsets have known problems.
If these problems have been addressed with the newest Mandrake release
then great, if not I would like to know which board to use and which to
stay away from. I would like to be able to run the harddrives at the

Re: [expert] Help with email client

2001-09-30 Thread Joseph Braddock

When setting up your account, you can tell KMail to delete mail on the server
(i.e. it downloads it to you then deletes it). In other words, all messages
would be deleted from the mail server and KMail would have them until you
deleted them in KMail. If you already have set up an account in KMail, you
can turn this setting on by going to the Configure Kmail under Settings menu.
Click on Network and your account should be shown at the bottom part of the
dialog window. Click on it and click Modify. There should be a check box
there that says something like: delete mail from server. That's it.

I do not quite undestand what you're trying to accomplish... But!

Yes.. there is an option on KMail to 'delete messages on the server'.
Then you decide if you also want to delete those messages locally,
but it is available under KMail.

If you go to setting, then network.. and then under your account name 'admin'
or whatever else you use, hit Modify... that will allow you to modify your
account and select the option 'delete mail from server' on the left side. of
the display box.

I hope this is what you're looking for. ;-)

Re: [expert] Help with Mdk8.1: Gnome + Enlightenment + Nautilus????

2001-09-30 Thread generic

One workaround I have found for this blatant bug in Gnome or GMC
is to create floating panels in Gnome and add launchers for applications
or URL's in them. I actually like this better now, as I have floating
text captions for the comment section for different apps or websites.

Now I can safely just use Enlightenment without using gnome-session,
I can just launch gmc & panel from with Enlightenment, which according
to the Enlightenment docs, is actually faster.

Frank,

some of the packages i got from my 8.0 disks. In fact, most of them came
from there. The "howto" was posted here on the list in this thread.

the upgrade failed due to, and i hate this almost more then some windows
errors, "bad magic" errors during the install of the compat-glibc and
glibc package installs. all the other packages seems to go in just fine.

It wasn't hard to clean up the mess, but it was time consuming.

[expert] MandrakeSecurity Single Firewall 7.2

2001-09-30 Thread lonnie

Hello All,

I have just download the Mandrake Security Single Network Firewall 7.2 and am
trying to get it installed.

I need to install a Proxy-APR Firewall so that my servers can keep their
existing IP's due to some licensing of other installed applications.

Can this Mandrake Firewall be set up with these features?

Cheers,
Lonnie

Well, my epson is working fine. I'm using cups, but if you use pdq as your
spooler you will have the option of killing a print job immediately. I set
it up during one install of the betas and it puts an icon on the desktop when
printing to hit if you want to stop it. But I really don't think there is a
big problem with cups as this is the first time I didn't have to tweak
setting to get descent printing from my epson. Maybe you could rerun
printerdrake and re-set it up. Mine did nothing during the install and I too
thought printing was still fscked, but I ran printerdrake after install and
all is fine.

True, they have been having problems with supermount for a while and thus is
disabled by default. However you can enable it yourself and many have
reported it works fine. I have enabled mine and it works fine. you know the
command right? supermount -i enable

> I also have an NVIDIA video card that worked just fine
> with 8.0 but the drivers don't compile in 8.1!!

I'm using the 1541 straight from nvidia and they were flawlessly. What seems
to be your problem? I got the deprecated this and that during compile, but
they still work fine. There is also a couple of sites with help for the
stubborn systems with driver tweaks and embellishments for 8.1:
http://www.mandrakeuser.org/download.php?dcategory=NVIDIA+For+8.1&sortby=
http://home.cinci.rr.com/salaneking/

Also, I have found that I have to change the agp default option of 3 to 1 in
my /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. Otherwise, my X hangs/freezes during login. This
is nvidia's change not mandrake's. I just had to put this:
Option "NvAGP" "1"
under graphics device section options.

Well, that was uncalled for. :-) However, I have come to realize that each
new version mandrake puts out there is an adjustment period. I have to learn
how to do things all over again. Such is the price for bleed edge
technology. I happen to think it is a GREAT version and worthy of compliment.

Ummm, nope. I have already donated and will probably buy the power pak too.
Thank you.

That's your choice. But I think you need to calm down, start addressing your
problems, and ask for help instead of crying all over town about mandrake sux.

I think it depends on the version you use... For example, in SNF7.2, wget

having said that, if you were happy with 8.1RC1, then why not keep that..

RE: [expert] Now I screwed up.. WooHoooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2001-09-30 Thread Asheesh Laroia

You know, there was an easier way

At the LILO prompt, type "1" or "init=/bin/sh" at the end of your image
name. That will get you to a root prompt.

Then cd into /dev.

The program "mknod" creates device files. /dev/null is no exception; it
can be recreated. mknod --help reveals the syntax:

mknod

/dev/null is a character device. After looking at the file on my
system (via ls -l), I find the "major" number of device /dev/null is 1;
the minor is 3. So:

mknod /dev/null c 1 3

Now change permissions as you like (I recommend chmod 666, chown
root.mem), and you're back in business. Restart, and continue as normal.

Again, it's nice to know that there are few problems that are unsolvable
in this system. All it takes is knowledge, not a reinstall (Unlike that
other OS...).

You could have also just used "cp -a" to copy the /dev/null from the
ramdisk into your filesystem's /dev. The "-a" (or "archive) switch makes
sure it saves file information, like devices, when copying.

Tell us what ifconfig eth0 shows.

and what the TCP/IP settings of your windows box are.

Sometimes you need to tweak the broadcast settings to match
what your Windows box thinks they should be.

Otherwise try changing to query mode, entering the ip address
of the linux box.

[expert] About a kernel patch - if_tr.h

2001-09-30 Thread Oscar

Hi,
I have a server running LM7.2. I had to recompile the kernel because I had a
little problem with my University LAN: From some machines (192.168.152.x) I
can't view my server (public IP).
The solution: to edit /usr/src/linux/include/linux/if_tr.h and put the line:
#define TR_RII 0x00
instead of:
#define TR_RII 0x80  (the original)
And recompile the kernel.
I will update to LM8.1 soon. When I do the update, it's neccesary to change
that line and recompile the kernel? Is it a problem with the kernel or with
the LAN of the University?
Thanks,
óscar.

[expert] Ispell and 8.1/Kmail

2001-09-30 Thread Hoyt Duff

I am unable to use ispell in Kmail, receiving the error " Ispell cannot be
started"; it suggests a configuration problem or a path problem.

[hoyt@wind hoyt]$ whereis ispell
ispell: /usr/bin/ispell /usr/lib/ispell /usr/share/man/man1/ispell.1.bz2
/usr/share/man/man4/ispell.4.bz2

[hoyt@wind hoyt]$ echo $PATH
/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games

I suppose it's a configuration problem, but I have done nothng to configure
it other than install the rpm which should provide the proper configuration.

Where do I look?

Hoyt

Thanks, Jesus. I will back that up after I re-set all my filters.

Shouldn't Kmail be checking to preserve this kind of information?

Re[2]: [expert] Re[2]: Different Multiple NIC's Question...

2001-09-30 Thread AutoRealty Technical Support

--- Reply created Sunday, 30 September 2001, 06:56:46 ---

James,

Thanks for the info...

1. This is the epiphany I recently had on the subject; works much
better this way.

2. That is likely the cause of behavior I am noticing; if I'm lucky, I
will be able to try a separate hub before I cable the T1 router
directly to the NIC in the linux box.

3. This is good news; hopefully, I will be that "lucky".

Thanks again,

[expert] Multi-head X Problem with 8.1

2001-09-30 Thread Hoyt Duff

I'm using 8.1 and a Matrox G450 with X configured for independent displays.

While display :0.0 is fine, display :0.1 presents the fonts as scrambled (it
looks like the bitmaps are just random data). The display is unusable and
drop-down menus all contain the scrambled fonts, so it's difficult, if not
impossible, to change anything.

Advice?

Hoyt

[expert] Losing Kmail Settings When Re-installing

2001-09-30 Thread Hoyt Duff

I kept my old /home directory and re-installed Mandrake 8.1.

All my kmail filter settings were lost. Most other settings seem to have been
kept.

Why did that happen? What can I do to stop it from happening next time?

Hoyt

[expert] Icewm icons

2001-09-30 Thread falcaraz

Hello folks;

Somebody said me that in icewm we can use the desktop icons of kde or gnome using
Xclient, but he didn't know how to do that. I have looked the icewm home page but I
couldn't found any coments about this subject.

Does anyone know how to do that or where to find the information about?

I like so much kde, but in my laptop icewm runs so much faster and I would like to
have it as the main desktop!

Thanks a lot, yours sincerely

[expert] X-Display Question!

2001-09-30 Thread putte

Hi Guys!

How do I use a windows to get the X on LM 8.1?
I use X-win32 and had always broadcasted to get a machine willing to manage.
But on the new 8.1 that doesn't work. I think it's something about the
security but I don't understund what file I should edit..

Best regards
Patrik

PS.
Great product! I just ordered my FIRST linux-dist!!!
