Hi,

OTOH, for a one time copy, FTP might be fine. the ncftp client supports a
recursive 'get' command. Much simpler than setting up NFS, _if_ you've an
ftp daemon running...

If you want to do a file copy from or to a MSDOS partition onto a Linux
or SCO UNIX partition, you will need Samba services to be
configured/running. You would then use the "smbmount" command. It is
just a bit easier to go from SCO UNIX to Linux with NFS...

Many thanks to both Kevin & Leif for the help on this one.
So it looks like iptables do the job very well with the
bastille-firewall config.

I realise the originating mail was a bit confusing, but I was using the
system in a
non-standard setup. It also looks as if using nmap from within a system
can produce some erroneous results

again thanks

Here (Athlon 1000mhz) it runs extremely well. I get a working set every eight
hours or so, and my machine is mostly otherwise idle during the day. It's
getting a good chunk of the CPU - normally it runs at nice 4, so it still gets
some cpu even when other things are running. It slows down some things like
compiles but not all that much. There's plenty of oomph on a 1000mhz athlon
to do stuff like this.

The Windows version generally doesn't accomplish a lot of work unless you're
simply idling, since it's a screen saver. How long does your average run
take? Do you notice a lot of variance in result times?

Linux is smart enough to balance the load between competing apps/processes,
a lot better than Windows is. I've been running the client uninterrupted for

Just nice it to hell and it'll only consume whatever cycles your not
using. Basically the same idea as the screensaver version running when the
machine is idle except even better since it'll even use unused cycles when
the machine is less than fully loaded.

Re: [expert] [OT] Problem with MandrakeStore

2001-10-31 Thread Miaoling Chiu

Dear George & All,

I've also had the same problem, and I'm still
waiting for it to be resolved. I ordered the
download disks and pre-ordered the Powerpack on
October 4. I know that the Powerpack isn't ready,
but I expected the download disks to arrive weeks
ago - so far, nothing has been delivered and my
first two Emails to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
were ignored. A third (rather nasty) Email sent
to [EMAIL PROTECTED] got this response:

  Dear Sir,

Thanks for your e-mail and I apologize for the
delay. There has been a data processing
error. The Chronopost Software did not print the
good labels. Thus, the ware (the powerpack
first) will be ready to leave on that week and I
will send you the tracking number as soon as
  possible.

Sorry for the inconvenience it caused you.
Thank you for your comprehension and support.

  Best regards,
--

The above message is a little unclear. It sounds
as if they are going to send me the Powerpack
before the download disks. Anyway, I have not
received the tracking number, nor the disks, yet.

I'm sure that there is nothing malicious intended
here - I don't think that MandrakeStore is trying
to cheat me. But they seem to be really badly
organized. Like other people on this list, I
ordered directly from Mandrakestore rather than
Cheapbytes because I wanted to give more
financial support to Mandrake. Unfortunately, I
have to conclude for now that I'm better off
dealing with Cheapbytes.

sincerely,
Robert Storey

[expert] Need help with iptables and LM 8.0

2001-10-31 Thread Dan Axtell

I'm trying to build some firewalls on a LM 8.0 box with kernel 2.4.7-12.3
and iptables 1.2.2. I'm trying to convert some rules I had on a
2.2 box written with ipchains, based on what I read in O'Reilly's "Building Internet
Firewalls".

What I can't fathom is why I can type in some rules at a root prompt,
but when I put the identical rules in a shell script I get syntax errors!

for example, to open up the HTTP port (where XXX is my IP number) and close everything
else:

iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s 0/0 --sport 1024: -d XXX --dport 80 -j ACCEPT

iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp -s XXX --sport 80 -d 0/0 --dport 1024: --tcp-flags ACK ACK
-j ACCEPT

iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp -s XXX --sport 1024: -d 0/0 --dport 80 -j ACCEPT

iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s 0/0 --sport 80 -d XXX --dport 1024: --tcp-flags ACK ACK -j
ACCEPT

iptables -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT

iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s 0/0 -d XXX -j DROP
When I put those in a bash script, I get errors like:

'ptables v1.2.2: Invalid target name `ACCEPT
Try `iptables -h' or 'iptables --help' for more information.

I'm sure it's something obvious, but I can't see it. Any ideas?

Thanks for any help,

Dan

Which version are you guys trying to use? There are so many to choose from
that... anyway, I've been using:
setiathome-3.03.i686-pc-linux-gnu-gnulibc2.1.tar

How are you trying to start it? ./setiathome is the basic command. Then
it will let you log in with an established user name or set up a new one.

Also check permissions of the directory & files you are trying to use. Did
you untar it as root and trying to use it as user?

Try installing ksetiwatch from your cds. It is a graphical front end for it
and quite nice.

[expert] DHCP changes

2001-10-31 Thread Roger Sherman

Does anyone know what's changed in DHCP from 7.2 to the 8.x series of
Mandrake? I've tried just about everything to get my cable modem going in
8.1, to no avail, whereas in 7.2 it just goes through the install process,
asks how I want to configure it, I select LAN, then DHCP, and I leave
hostname and proxies config blank. Every time I've done that, it's been
flawless. I have a 3com 3c900B-TPO, which uses the 3c59x module, my PC is
a Compaq with a 500mhz Celeron, 192 meg ram, and an 810 chipset, and my
cable provider is Optimum online. Would an equipment change make a
difference? Perhaps a new Nic? I'm building a new PC (which due to budget
constraints won't be done til January at least, unless I go nuts with the
Discover card...you just never know) which will have a KG-7 mobo, AMD 1.33
T-bird, probably the same nic card (unless someone suggests differently).
Will that have a better chance of getting online?

I've pretty much given up hope about getting online in 8.1 - right now I'd
be happy if I just knew why I can't...

[expert] Time for professionalism... Please fix DNS.

2001-10-31 Thread Pierre Fortin

This is really an attempt to help Mandrake look more professional... I
too have to get my own DNS act together; but my little home network is not as
critical to being exemplary in this business climate as yours.

Here is the result of probing Mandrake's DNS from
http://atrey.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~mj/sleuth/

Fixing the problems would result in Mandrake looking much more
professional than its competition...

Just trying to help,
Pierre

I'm not sure what the issue is with your setup, however I managed to get my

Have you tried either A)
redownloading the tar.gz file
b) redecompressing the files?

[expert] Errors when building Kernels from RPM

2001-10-31 Thread Leif Madsen

I'm trying to upgrade my kernel, and I can't seem to be able to get past
2.4.7 (which I am currently running). I have installed all the packages that
it requires, along with whatever those ones require :)

I am getting this error:
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C").
perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
LANGUAGE = "en_US:en",
LC_ALL = (unset),
LC_MESSAGES = "en_US",
LC_TIME = "en_US",
LC_NUMERIC = "en_US",
LC_CTYPE = "en_US",
LC_MONETARY = "en_US",
LC_COLLATE = "en_US",
LANG = "en"
are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C").

I assume this has something to do with perl not being configured properly
somehwere..? or a missing library?

Currently running perl v5.6.1 built for i386-linux

Idea's?

Re: [expert] FIXED: Upgrade to 8.1 breaks connecting to some hosts

2001-10-31 Thread Bjarne Thomsen

As I posted on this list 08/26/2001:
Enter the line
echo "0" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_ecn
in file
/etc/rc.d/rc.local
It is then possible after a reboot.

RE: [expert] FIXED: Upgrade to 8.1 breaks connecting to some hosts

2001-10-31 Thread Jason Bodnar

After much trial and error I determined the cause of this problem: TCP Explicit
Congestion Notification support is built into the stock Mandrake 8.1 kernel and
is not turned off at boot time. Obviously, the root of the problem is
walgreens, etc. having bad routers (not sure why my print server was refusing
the connection as well) but Mandrake either needs to disable this in their
kernels or provide an init script that does:

echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_ecn

Very, very nasty problem to track down.

[expert] Starting openoffice 638C fails as normal user!!!

2001-10-31 Thread Juergen Hammelmann

Hello there,

I have installed OpenOffice 638C as root with the /net option.
Then as normal user and under KDE 2.2.1 then the setup and/or start of
soffice fails immediately with a segmentation fault.
Under FVWM2 the things go well!

Does anyone know whats the problem here?!

StarOffice 5.2 is starting well, but there are some little bugs with th
fonts, so I want to upgrade.

strace shows the following, this output is the same with soffice or setup:

You can still use your current 2.4.8.
In the lilo append section where it list: mount=devfs
change that entry to: devfs=nomount

This turns off devs, but it will not help supermount any.

BTW the Mandrke 2.4.13-2 kernel now installs with dev=nomount

Ive tried a lot, be careful, lots of crap out there. Squirrel Mail is the
best. Its just like those commercial variants.

http://www.squirrelmail.org

There is a wonderful api for writing plugins for extending its
capabilities. I recommand it highly and use it in a number of commercial
venues.

[expert] Web-based E-Mail interface?

2001-10-31 Thread David Guntner

Hi,

Can anyone make some recomendations for web-based E-Mail interfaces for
Linux? Something free would be preferable, though low-cost ones would be
considered as well. I'm looking for something which will let you access
your local mailbox and send mail.

It would be nice if it would let you configure your From: address line so
that you can put in your preferred E-Mail address (since that might not be
the same as your account name on the box where you're reading mail), and
let you configure external POP3 boxes to suck mail down from. Again, these
are things which would be nice, but aren't a requirement for consideration.
:-)

Any information/pointers would be appreciated! TIA.

Your email is a little confusing to me, however I can try and help clear up
your xinetd -> iptables question. With bastille running, everything will be
filtered through your Bastille config file first. If Bastille allows it to
pass, then xinetd will handle it.

If you have Bastille setup to redirect, and xinetd on the same machine to
redirect the same port, Bastille will redirect it and xinetd won't see it.

Re: [expert] devfs related? Strange behaviour of 8.1

2001-10-31 Thread Jose Luis Vazquez Gonzalez

Hi,

There is not much hope that someone on this list will answer a devfs related
question. I made a similar query more than once about a weird mouse behavior
after upgrading to MDK8.1 and none had a clue.
(message: [expert] Devfs, M8.1 and Ps2 mouse)

I had experienced the same problem as you (I think) with the /mnt
directory, I guess it is due to a supermount bug cuase it says just so
sometimes while I shutdown Mandrake.

Devfs makes X Windows to detect the mouse only after I go to a text console
and come back to X Windows. Gpm does not find /dev/psaux or /dev/misc/psaux
at bootup, but it finds them later, even being devfsd started long before gpm.

Supermount fails most of the time and dumps error messages at shutdown.

Everything I describe is on a 2.4.8 kernel given by Mandrake and recompiled
with some options changed. I think I have heard on this list there were bugs
in kernels after 2.4.3 in supermount and people was trying to test 2.4.12.

Yesterday I was fed up and changed my lilo to boot my old 2.4.3 on my MDK8.1.
Everything seems to go just fine, with no devfs but with supermount working
perfectly.

I may try to recompile 2.4.8 without devfs support or tryout 2.4.12.

Good luck!

Jose

Was this an upgrade to 8.0? When I upgraded to 8.1, my postfix was broken
with a permissions problem. I had some other problems, so I installed
fresh, and now I have no problems with postfix. The check command will
tell you exactly what may be failing.

[expert] bastille-firewall

2001-10-31 Thread kons Richard Bown

Hi all , me again !
I just remotely loggged into my machine at home going in sorta via the
back door.
I'l briefly explain, I hav'nt been able to get prerouting with dnat
functioning properly yet.
I have 2 ether ports, 1 on a cable modem the other to a local network.
I have 2 ports which xinetd redirects to a nother machine on the local
network.
So I've just telneted back in the machine from the local network, which
from the bastille-netfilter.cfg script should only have 5 ports open
from that side.
I've run nmap and it reports 15 ports open, but not the 2 ports I let
xinetd redirect from. ! ?
However, I've tried telnetting to all of the ports listed that I hav'nt
listed in bastille-netfilter and they all time out, this would suggest
that they are correctly set to
DROP the incoming packet.

Which has priority in the system iptables or xinetd ?
the open ports are listed as 111,139,631,870,901,3128,6000,32770, there
are 2 for obvious reasons I'm not happy as being reported open..

I'm inclined to believe the bastill-netfilter.cfg file, but curious as
to why the difference.

If anyone wants to port scan me the address is 62.31.194.123, but please
send the results to my e-mail address.

Anyone had anything similar.

TIA

According to the changelog on the 2.4.13-2mdk kernel:

supermount upgrade:
* options passed to subfs should work when you change the cd
* bug: cd /mnt/cdrom/any_dir; ls -l; switch cd; ls should have gone.
* That means that there is no more supremount bugs that I have heard of.
* supermount with no fs type, or fs type of auto does what you expect:
* try iso9660, then vfat, then ext2.

Remember:

There are no stupid questions; Only stupid people asking questions!

hah. kiddin.

Kernel is always at: /usr/src/linux

I always start with a fresh kernel from: kernel.org
It is a tar extrating to current dir linux dir.
cd /usr/src ; tar xzvf /tmp/kernel*gz

Ill typically rename the dir pertinantly:
mv linux linux-2.4.13
ln -s linux-2.4.13 linux

Then patching is usually as such:
cd /usr/src/linux ; patch -p1 wrote:

"Unused" just means not used by another module - i.e. there is no module
above it in the dependency chain. This is normal.

With the camera connected and switched on, do a 'cat /proc/scsi/scsi' and
look for your camera info in the output.

Did you mount the "drive"?
If you have no other SCSI disk, put the following line in /etc/fstab -

/dev/sda1 /mnt/camera vfat ro,noauto,user 0 0

Create the directory /mnt/camera, and then do a 'mount /mnt/camera'
Then you can cd to /mnt/camera and ls it.
Well - that's how it works for me...

I tend to agree with you on this Quintin. Still, "the latest,
greatest kernel"s are cooker. I'd advise that those who use cooker
kernels (I do), it's a good idea to also lurk on the cooker mailing
list, or check the archive. Very often problems come up with cooker
kernels within a day or two of being made available on the mirrors.
Specially the early patch levels, eg, -1mdk. If you pay attention to
the cooker ML discussion (particularly Juan), it's fairly easy to
tell when the latest kernel is good to go. Currently 2.4.13-2mdk is
close.

The *are* indications as to what is happening... you just need to find

Check:

If you can't find the problem there, post the result of:

it would be nice to be able to customise, but I can get round the Ham
stuff at the moment
by tunnelling through the firewall, instaed of putting the apps on the
firewall.

One thing that is important , probally more so than the ability to be
able to compile every
thing is :-
is supermount now working correctly on 2.4.13-2mdk ???
now unfortunatle I cant check from here as its an all unix system, and
my pc is 1000miles away.
I can get in and do all sorts of things , but cant run a remote xterm,
due to the ericsson firewall.
So could some kind person make a definative statement as to the
functionality of supermont in 2.4.13-2mdkplase

It's not a matter of trust, but of trade-offs. Mandrake's (and other
distros) first priority must be functionality over performance. That is,
it's more important for the distro to work out-of-the box on as wide a
selection of hardware as possible then for it to be fine-tuned for your
particular machine.

Of course, modules help (a lot!) provide wide hardware support without
bloating the kernel, but not everything can be modular-ized. For example,
compiling the kernel for your specific CPU might be worth a few % increased
performance.

Bottom line - it will always be possible to make a smaller/faster kernel
than that which is provided with the distro. Whether it is worth the
risk/effort or not is another question, though...

just grab the source for 2.4.13 and blow away the source for 2.4.3 when
you are done.

if this is the first patch you are applying you would use the following:

gzip -cd /path/to/patch | patch -p0

Good arguement Quintin,,,but in the Ham radio section of the kernel I
suspect the modules for ax25 and netrom are in but the drivers for kiss,
6pack , bpqether,scc...etc probally are not.

It still however, even if they are in, dos'nt solve tehe problem as to
why the kernel cpompiles easily and the modules fail to,
even using make -k , murphy's law strikes sorta the most essential
modules will always be those which fail to compile !!

[expert] kernel patch questions

2001-10-31 Thread Dennis Myhand

Hi All:

I am patching my kernel (Mandrake 8.0, 2.4.3 kernel, wanting to go to
2.4.13 and higher as they become available). Patch 2.4.11 is labeled as
patch-2.4.11-dont-use. Can I skip this patch and go on with 2.4.12? I
thought they had to be applied in numerical order?

Second question is, when I run the command "gzip -dc
/path/to/patch-2.4.4.gz | patch -pl" I get the message "strip count 1 is
not option". I think this was the message, my optical prescription is
not as good as it was.

I have to say that the documentation regarding where things are on the
system, and how to do things like upgrade kernels or patch kernels, is
not near what I would like to see. And, yes, I would like a
step-by-step, hold my hand, walk through type of instruction

Re: [expert] re;modules compile kernel 2.4.8 & 2.4.12

2001-10-31 Thread Quintin Holmberg

this isn't really a solution to compiling the kernel but more just a
question about a different alternative.

why not just rpm the kernel? the latest, greatest kenel for mandrake
can be aquired at
http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=kernel. i used to
compile my own kernel for the same reason ... there were modules i
wanted that required me to compile the kernel. the result was always a
to fight to get everything working correctly. once i found mandrake, i
found that they compiled the kernel in a very modular fasion and with
every module i could possible want or need. all i have to do is load
the module.

i mean, we trust mandrake ... right? i personally would not presume to
believe i could build a better, more efficient or secure kernel than
they can. this is their job ... they are banking their entire
livelyhood on this. if they screw me, there are plent of other distro's
willing to pick up my support and i believe they know it. additionally,
mandrake takes linux and creates a distro that functions in a certain
way based around linux ... which is basically the kernel and it's
modules.

what's wrong with rpm'ing the latest, greatest kernel and it's modules
and leaving the system the way they designed it?

Hi all,
I apologise if an aswer to the prob has been posted in the last few
days, but my isp has turned his webmail server off.
Ive now subscribed directly from work

this only applies to 2.4 kernels not 2.2

I'm not the only person to get this problem, ie the kernel compiles ,
but not the modules.
I'm getting this on both 2.4.8-26mdk and 2.4.12-5mdk.
Using gcc2.96 and egcs installed , I've been imformed gcc3 is not to be
used.

Whats the secret please to get the modules to compile ?, the main reason
for moving to a later kernel is hopefully a supermount function that
works.I also need to compile in the ax25 utils.

TIA

Hi , I'm also seeing the same problem unmountng the cdrom, I'm making
the assumption the kernel is 2.4.8 as on the distro images,
a horrible bodge to get round this is to start the cd player from the
apps menu, and use the
eject key...at least it allows the cd to be removed. Strangly enough it
dos'nt screw the system up,, as the next cd in mounts ok.

Re: [expert] [OT] PRoblem with MandrakeStore

2001-10-31 Thread Jesus Arocho

I had the same problem. I did eventually receive the package. I sent
two e-mails with no response to either. This does reflect a degree of
disregard for the customer and a lack of commitment to quality in all
aspects of their business. But, the product is good enough for us to
ignore these things; for now.

Mandrake Linux Community Newsletter issue #17 dated 30th Oct says
that Mandrakesoft started shipping pre-ordered boxed sets "this week".

Hopefully the sun should start shining for you soon.

[expert] devfs related? Strange behaviour of 8.1

2001-10-31 Thread Arnab_Ganguly

Something to add to my earlier mail:

After upgrading from 8.0 to 8.1 I am now unable to enter the /mnt directory
in any way under any login, including root as the system hangs if I try > cd
/mnt.

I have a suspicion that this is due to the devfs daemon running and messing
up things. I could not find the devfs daemon under "services" in the
Mandrake Control Centre.

Any suggestions on how to solve the problem (preferably with devfs if that
has worked for others) including a fresh reinstall etc.. would be
welcome.

Thanks.
Arnab
