Re: [expert] bastille-firewall
Many thanks to both Kevin & Leif for the help on this one. So it looks like iptables do the job very well with the bastille-firewall config. I realise the originating mail was a bit confusing, but I was using the system in a non-standard setup. It also looks as if using nmap from within a system can produce some erroneous results again thanks Richard Kevin wrote: > > On Wednesday 31 October 2001 7:19 am, you wrote: > > Hi all , me again ! > > I just remotely loggged into my machine at home going in sorta via the > > back door. > > I'l briefly explain, I hav'nt been able to get prerouting with dnat > > functioning properly yet. > > I have 2 ether ports, 1 on a cable modem the other to a local network. > > I have 2 ports which xinetd redirects to a nother machine on the local > > network. > > So I've just telneted back in the machine from the local network, which > > from the bastille-netfilter.cfg script should only have 5 ports open > > from that side. > > I've run nmap and it reports 15 ports open, but not the 2 ports I let > > xinetd redirect from. ! ? > > However, I've tried telnetting to all of the ports listed that I hav'nt > > listed in bastille-netfilter and they all time out, this would suggest > > that they are correctly set to > > DROP the incoming packet. > > > > Which has priority in the system iptables or xinetd ? > > the open ports are listed as 111,139,631,870,901,3128,6000,32770, there > > are 2 for obvious reasons I'm not happy as being reported open.. > > > > I'm inclined to believe the bastill-netfilter.cfg file, but curious as > > to why the difference. > > > > Your email is a little confusing to me, however I can try and help clear up > your xinetd -> iptables question. Re: [expert] [OT] Problem with MandrakeStore
Dear George & All, I've also had the same problem, and I'm still waiting for it to be resolved. I ordered the download disks and pre-ordered the Powerpack on October 4. I know that the Powerpack isn't ready, but I expected the download disks to arrive weeks ago - so far, nothing has been delivered and my first two Emails to [EMAIL PROTECTED] were ignored. A third (rather nasty) Email sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] got this response: Dear Sir, Thanks for your e-mail and I apologize for the delay. There has been a data processing error. The Chronopost Software did not print the good labels. Thus, the ware (the powerpack first) will be ready to leave on that week and I will send you the tracking number as soon as possible. Sorry for the inconvenience it caused you. Thank you for your comprehension and support. Best regards, -- The above message is a little unclear. It sounds as if they are going to send me the Powerpack before the download disks. Anyway, I have not received the tracking number, nor the disks, yet. I'm sure that there is nothing malicious intended here - I don't think that MandrakeStore is trying to cheat me. But they seem to be really badly organized. Like other people on this list, I ordered directly from Mandrakestore rather than Cheapbytes because I wanted to give more financial support to Mandrake. Re: [expert] Seti@home
I'm not sure what the issue is with your setup, however I managed to get my seti client running perfectly right out of the tar.gz file. Have you tried either A) redownloading the tar.gz file b) redecompressing the files? RE: [expert] FIXED: Upgrade to 8.1 breaks connecting to some hosts
After much trial and error I determined the cause of this problem: TCP Explicit Congestion Notification support is built into the stock Mandrake 8.1 kernel and is not turned off at boot time. Obviously, the root of the problem is walgreens, etc. having bad routers (not sure why my print server was refusing the connection as well) but Mandrake either needs to disable this in their kernels or provide an init script that does: echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_ecn Very, very nasty problem to track down. [expert] Starting openoffice 638C fails as normal user!!!
Hello there, I have installed OpenOffice 638C as root with the /net option. Then as normal user and under KDE 2.2.1 then the setup and/or start of soffice fails immediately with a segmentation fault. Ive tried a lot, be careful, lots of crap out there. Squirrel Mail is the best. Its just like those commercial variants. http://www.squirrelmail.org There is a wonderful api for writing plugins for extending its capabilities. I recommand it highly and use it in a number of commercial venues. On Wed, 31 Oct 2001, David Guntner wrote: > Hi, > > Can anyone make some recomendations for web-based E-Mail interfaces for > Linux? Hi, Can anyone make some recomendations for web-based E-Mail interfaces for Linux? Something free would be preferable, though low-cost ones would be considered as well. I'm looking for something which will let you access your local mailbox and send mail. It would be nice if it would let you configure your From: address line so that you can put in your preferred E-Mail address (since that might not be the same as your account name on the box where you're reading mail), and let you configure external POP3 boxes to suck mail down from. Again, these are things which would be nice, but aren't a requirement for consideration. :-) Any information/pointers would be appreciated! TIA. --Dave -- David Guntner GEnie: Just say NO! http://www.akaMail.com/pgpkey/davidg or key server for PGP Public key Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? With bastille running, everything will be filtered through your Bastille config file first. If Bastille allows it to pass, then xinetd will handle it. If you have Bastille setup to redirect, and xinetd on the same machine to redirect the same port, Bastille will redirect it and xinetd won't see it. /--\|| | | | Internet |-> | Bastille | -> | Xinetd| \--/|| | | HTH, Kevin Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [expert] devfs related? Strange behaviour of 8.1
Hi, There is not much hope that someone on this list will answer a devfs related question. I made a similar query more than once about a weird mouse behavior after upgrading to MDK8.1 and none had a clue. (message: [expert] Devfs, M8.1 and Ps2 mouse) I had experienced the same problem as you (I think) with the /mnt directory, I guess it is due to a supermount bug cuase it says just so sometimes while I shutdown Mandrake. Devfs makes X Windows to detect the mouse only after I go to a text console and come back to X Windows. Gpm does not find /dev/psaux or /dev/misc/psaux at bootup, but it finds them later, even being devfsd started long before gpm. Supermount fails most of the time and dumps error messages at shutdown. Everything I describe is on a 2.4.8 kernel given by Mandrake and recompiled with some options changed. I think I have heard on this list there were bugs in kernels after 2.4.3 in supermount and people was trying to test 2.4.12. Yesterday I was fed up and changed my lilo to boot my old 2.4.3 on my MDK8.1. Everything seems to go just fine, with no devfs but with supermount working perfectly. I may try to recompile 2.4.8 without devfs support or tryout 2.4.12. Good luck! [expert] bastille-firewall
Hi all , me again ! I just remotely loggged into my machine at home going in sorta via the back door. I'l briefly explain, I hav'nt been able to get prerouting with dnat functioning properly yet. I have 2 ether ports, 1 on a cable modem the other to a local network. I have 2 ports which xinetd redirects to a nother machine on the local network. So I've just telneted back in the machine from the local network, which from the bastille-netfilter.cfg script should only have 5 ports open from that side. I've run nmap and it reports 15 ports open, but not the 2 ports I let xinetd redirect from. ! ? However, I've tried telnetting to all of the ports listed that I hav'nt listed in bastille-netfilter and they all time out, this would suggest that they are correctly set to DROP the incoming packet. Which has priority in the system iptables or xinetd ? the open ports are listed as 111,139,631,870,901,3128,6000,32770, there are 2 for obvious reasons I'm not happy as being reported open.. I'm inclined to believe the bastill-netfilter.cfg file, but curious as to why the difference. If anyone wants to port scan me the address is 62.31.194.123, but please send the results to my e-mail address. Anyone had anything similar. [expert] Stupid Question Time
Hi Group: I am progressing in the patch work. Can someone point me to the location of the kernel on my system? The patch asked which file I wanted to patch, and I assume that would be the kernel, but I cannot find that on my 8.0 system. "Unused" just means not used by another module - i.e. there is no module above it in the dependency chain. This is normal. With the camera connected and switched on, do a 'cat /proc/scsi/scsi' and look for your camera info in the output. Did you mount the "drive"? If you have no other SCSI disk, put the following line in /etc/fstab - /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera vfat ro,noauto, user 0 0 Create the directory /mnt/camera, and then do a 'mount /mnt/camera' Then you can cd to /mnt/camera and ls it. I tend to agree with you on this Quintin. Still, "the latest, greatest kernel"s are cooker. I'd advise that those who use cooker kernels (I do), it's a good idea to also lurk on the cooker mailing list, or check the archive. Very often problems come up with cooker kernels within a day or two of being made available on the mirrors. Specially the early patch levels, eg, -1mdk. If you pay attention to the cooker ML discussion (particularly Juan), it's fairly easy to tell when the latest kernel is good to go. Currently 2.4.13-2mdk is close. -- Tom Brinkman Galveston Bay, USA chmod +x /bin/Laden.al-Qaeda.Taliban Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

It's not a matter of trust, but of trade-offs. Mandrake's (and other distros) first priority must be functionality over performance. That is, it's more important for the distro to work out-of-the box on as wide a selection of hardware as possible then for it to be fine-tuned for your particular machine. Of course, modules help (a lot!) provide wide hardware support without bloating the kernel, but not everything can be modular-ized. For example, compiling the kernel for your specific CPU might be worth a few % increased performance. Bottom line - it will always be possible to make a smaller/faster kernel than that which is provided with the distro. Whether it is worth the risk/effort or not is another question, though... Good arguement Quintin,,,but in the Ham radio section of the kernel I suspect the modules for ax25 and netrom are in but the drivers for kiss, 6pack , bpqether,scc...etc probally are not. It still however, even if they are in, dos'nt solve tehe problem as to why the kernel cpompiles easily and the modules fail to, even using make -k , murphy's law strikes sorta the most essential modules will always be those which fail to compile !! Hi All: I am patching my kernel (Mandrake 8.0, 2.4.3 kernel, wanting to go to 2.4.13 and higher as they become available). Patch 2.4.11 is labeled as patch-2.4.11-dont-use. Can I skip this patch and go on with 2.4.12? I thought they had to be applied in numerical order? Second question is, when I run the command "gzip -dc /path/to/patch-2.4.4.gz | patch -pl" I get the message "strip count 1 is not option". I think this was the message, my optical prescription is not as good as it was. I have to say that the documentation regarding where things are on the system, and how to do things like upgrade kernels or patch kernels, is not near what I would like to see. this isn't really a solution to compiling the kernel but more just a question about a different alternative. why not just rpm the kernel? the latest, greatest kenel for mandrake can be aquired at http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=kernel. i used to compile my own kernel for the same reason ... there were modules i wanted that required me to compile the kernel. the result was always a to fight to get everything working correctly. once i found mandrake, i found that they compiled the kernel in a very modular fasion and with every module i could possible want or need. all i have to do is load the module. i mean, we trust mandrake ... right? i personally would not presume to believe i could build a better, more efficient or secure kernel than they can. this is their job ... they are banking their entire livelyhood on this. if they screw me, there are plent of other distro's willing to pick up my support and i believe they know it. additionally, mandrake takes linux and creates a distro that functions in a certain way based around linux ... which is basically the kernel and it's modules. what's wrong with rpm'ing the latest, greatest kernel and it's modules and leaving the system the way they designed it? -- quintin holmberg On Wed, 2001-10-31 at 06:14, kons Richard Bown wrote: > Hi all, > I apologise if an aswer to the prob has been posted in the last few > days, but my isp has turned his webmail server off. > Ive now subscribed directly from work > > > this only applies to 2.4 kernels not 2.2 > > I'm not the only person to get this problem, ie the kernel compiles , > but not the modules. > I'm getting this on both 2.4.8-26mdk and 2.4.12-5mdk. > Using gcc2.96 and egcs installed , I've been imformed gcc3 is not to be > used. > > Whats the secret please to get the modules to compile ?, the main reason > for moving to a later kernel is hopefully a supermount function that > works.I also need to compile in the ax25 utils. > > TIA > > -- > Richard Bown > Ericsson Microwave Systems AB > SE-431 84 Mölndal > e-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] > tel +46 31 74 72422 > mobile +46 7098 72422 > > > > Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? > Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Hi all, I apologise if an aswer to the prob has been posted in the last few days, but my isp has turned his webmail server off. Ive now subscribed directly from work this only applies to 2.4 kernels not 2.2 I'm not the only person to get this problem, ie the kernel compiles , but not the modules. I'm getting this on both 2.4.8-26mdk and 2.4.12-5mdk. Using gcc2.96 and egcs installed , I've been imformed gcc3 is not to be used. Whats the secret please to get the modules to compile ?, the main reason for moving to a later kernel is hopefully a supermount function that works.I also need to compile in the ax25 utils. Re: [expert] Strange behaviour of 8.1
Hi , I'm also seeing the same problem unmountng the cdrom, I'm making the assumption the kernel is 2.4.8 as on the distro images, a horrible bodge to get round this is to start the cd player from the apps menu, and use the eject key...at least it allows the cd to be removed. Strangly enough it dos'nt screw the system up,, as the next cd in mounts ok. Re: [expert] Cameras
I must be doing something wrong, then. I can't seem to get it to work with my Toshiba PDR-M60. When I modprobe usb-storage, it gets loaded, but no /dev/sd* device exists. an lsmod shows that usb-storage remains unused. Can you think of anything else I might try? Thanks! one of the other replies shows a common trouble shooting technique i often use. try running the problem apps from the command line (i generally do it without the & at the end) and see what the output is. if you can't solve it yourself from the output, send it to me and maybe i can interpret it. -- quintin holmberg On Tue, 2001-10-30 at 22:55, Arnab_Ganguly wrote: > > Hi, > > I upgraded my home machine (Intel 810 board, 128M RAM, Celeron > Processor) from Mandrake 8.0 to 8.1 last night. Re: [expert] [OT] PRoblem with MandrakeStore
I had the same problem. I did eventually receive the package. I sent two e-mails with no response to either. This does reflect a degree of disregard for the customer and a lack of commitment to quality in all aspects of their business. But, the product is good enough for us to ignore these things; for now. [expert] devfs related? Strange behaviour of 8.1
Something to add to my earlier mail: After upgrading from 8.0 to 8.1 I am now unable to enter the /mnt directory in any way under any login, including root as the system hangs if I try > cd /mnt. I have a suspicion that this is due to the devfs daemon running and messing up things. I could not find the devfs daemon under "services" in the Mandrake Control Centre. Any suggestions on how to solve the problem (preferably with devfs if that has worked for others) including a fresh reinstall etc.. would be welcome. Thanks.
