[expert] KDE 3.0.1 and konsole-noxft
I thought I had this licked because I was getting along well for a while but then, inexplicably, the problem pops up again. I am running Mandrake 8.2 with the Mandrake KDE 3.0.1 rpms installed (I am VERY slowly downloading the KDE 3.0.2 rpms now...will take a week to finish). It is a known monstrous problem in KDE 3 that if you try to run the konsole from the panel/kicker, it will freeze kicker and when you exit konsole, you will get an error message about not being able to run "konsole-noxft". GAH! I tried several things to destroy this nonsense, from changing the real konsole-noxft to another name and then symlinking konsole-noxft to plain ole konsole, editing the properties for the konsole icon on the panel so that it runs "konsole" instead of "konsole-noxft" (but this only lasts until your next login), and finally, when nothing worked, I flat-out deleted konsole-noxft (because I NEVER want to run without xft damnit!) and that worked...for a while. I quite getting the error message and konsole started just fine from kicker (you do not get any problem if you run konsole from the kmenu (??). Then, and suddenly, I lately found that I couldn't run konsole from the kicker icon at all because it started complaining about not being able to find "konsole-noxft". Duh, I deleted it and it was all perfectly fine for about a month. Has anyone come up with a permanent fix for this that does NOT involve the very sad and repulsive suggestion from the KDE people of deleting the kicker konsole icon and just putting a konsole icon on the desktop? I will not do this. My desktop is clean and pristine and there will be no nonsensical icons on it. At the moment, I have replaced the konsole icon with one for eterm but there is no antialiasing possible with this. Anyone find a better fix than the KDE-suggested one? praedor Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[expert] Error... Disk failure?
I woke up this morning and turned my computer on. It just sat there while trying to mount an NFS share on my server computer. So I turned on the server monitor to find lots of lines of error explanation... I couldn't copy and paste them, as the computer wouldn't do anything. I didn't feel like writing it all out by hand either. But I did get another error on a different VTT. Device 08:02 not ready I/O error: dev 08:02, sector 944920 So umm... I have two SCSI drives in here, my uptime was over 52 days, and it has been quite cool here, as far as room temperature goes. Now, my question is, since I am using ReiserFS, could another filesystem type have recovered from this? I could still hit enter and get a new prompt, but if I put any commands in, if just didn't do anything (pico, uptime, ifconfig, etc). Or am I totally off here? Actually 4 and 5 if you want to install from a distro and CD ... go Slackware or Debian. They both work well on 486 below 50mhz. Now if it's like my little box that has a 100mhz AMD and is capable of running win98 Go RH ... chose the 2.2 kernel (for an even faster box go 2.0 kernel. The hardware it doesn't support can't be used on a 486 anyway, but you'll have to build it later after the install.) Just make sure of the following. DON'T try kde or gnome... they are just plain too big. Go with ICE or some other small wm. As for browsers go with browsex it's fast and light and will actually start in under an hour. Final idea check out the rule project www.rule.org. RULE stands for Run Up2date Linux Everywhere. [expert] mouse acceleration
in the kde mouse config one can set an 'acceleration' setting, this seems to be a geometric relationship between the speed of the mouse and the speed of the cursor e.g. move the mouse twice as fast and the cursor moves 4x, move the mouse 3x and the cursor moves 6x, at least this is how it appears, what i wish to do however is to set the ratio of distance not speed, if my cursor moves distance a for mouse distance b - alter the (constant) relationship between a and b, but not make that relationship dependent on speed as it is at present, can this be done? does this make sense? bascule -- "`Ford, you're turning into a penguin. What is happening is the server on your machine is doing a reverse lookup on the IP address of the machine that is connecting to it. Do you understand what the problem is? The problem is only partially able to be fixed by a proper dns configuration on your part. The other part is that someone else's DNS out on the internet can be royally screwed and you will still see the delays. But that doesn't sound like your problem. It sounds like you are having problems with reverse lookups from local connections. You should have a DNS server setup on your local lan that is authoritative for the domain name you are using *AND* the local IP subnet (reverse). So if you were using *.domain.com and 192.168.1.*, then your dns server should be authoritative for domain.com and 1.168.192.in-addr.arpa. > It is not hosting DNS. What are you using as a DNS source? Your ISP? Where is the connection originating from? What's their IP address? The answers to those questions provide a lot of direction to the one answer that will solve all of your problems. [expert] kde startup wizard
I finally managed to download enough of KDE 3.0.2 to install and run it in replacement of 3.0.1. The konsole-noxft nonsense is, thankfully, eliminated so it seems. What isn't corrected is the initial startup wizard which insists on coming up with each login regardless of whether it is your first time or not. I cannot recall which config file to edit to kill that bugger. Can anyone remind me which kde3 file needs to be edited to kill the first time startup wizard? praedor Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

It is likely permanent. (yes, it is a little-known fact that partitions on a SCSI drive are limited to 15 while on an IDE they are limited to 63 per drive.) [expert] "noauto" Filesytems being mounted at boot
This has been bothering me for some time now, but I thought it was something I misconfigued on my system. I have my optical drives (CD-RW and DVD-ROM) like so in my fstab: /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom2 iso9660 noauto,ro,user 0 0 /dev/dvd /mnt/dvd iso9660 noaouto,ro,user 0 0 So I don't want them to auto-mount (like at boot time from rc.sysinit) and I want the user to be able to control mount/umount of these devices. But, at boot time, if there is a disc in either drive, it is mounted and I have to be superuser to umount the disc. Also, if there is no disc in any optical drive, rc.sysinit complains about no media. Can someone enlighten me here? -- +-% He's a real UNIX Man $-+-+ \ Sitting in his UNIX LAN \ Charles A.
