Try here, instead of the "Powered by ATI" link, there are a heap of cards in
the pop -up menu. Although my card is actually OEM, and a plain 9000, rather
than a 9000Pro, it certainly uses the driuvers, and the changelog (which pops
up during the install) mentions some fix or fixes for the OEM cards

Any way, YMMV, and all .

And the urpmi-command-lines are better. I had a lot of times nonfunctional
command-lines in the club. May be that it is fixed now, never tried again. Ah
and as urpmi.setup is in 9.1 main its not really an issue anymore I guess ;)

You may think this a stupid question, but your not using a 8x re-writable
disk are you ?

If you put in a x2 re-writable, it'll only write at x2, if it's a x8, it'll
only write at x8, irrespective of what you want it to burn at ?

well there are only about 3 million reasons you could have such a problem,
and
without asking a few more questions, I don't think you will be able to get a

clearer answer.
are you using a command line or a GUI to burn? what command or GUI have you
tried? are you burning a file from a local hard drive? cd to cd "burn on
the
fly"? what IDE bus is the CD burner on? I recomend burning no faster than 8x

anytime and anyway, for insurance against "overcoastering". (creating more
coasters than my microwave can zap in one 24 hour period.)

I wish it was that simple.. The CDs I was using have 2-40x on them, I

[expert] ASUS A7V8X KT400 AGP3.0 bios switch

2003-03-04 Thread Adrian Golumbovici
Hi,

Anyone know how I can switch my motherboard to work in 4x mode (so to fall
back to AGP 2.0)?

My bios (latest one) seems to lock itself to AGP 3.0 as soon as I put my AGP
3.0 compliant graphics card in it (Radeon 9700 Pro). :( That makes it that I
cannot use the official drivers as AGP 3.0 support is required and current
kernel doesn't. :(

I searched the entire net for how to do this (or which bios should I flash
to solve the problem) but no luck. I just found somewhere that some older
bioses allow to, and the newer one requires some funky secret key
combination to allow you to fallback to AGP 2.0, but couldn't actually find
the right combination.

Please help. I am pretty desperate. I cannot play anything on it as long as
I have the vesa drivers (only ones which would work) from X. :(

Best regards,
Adrian

Todd,

I know you are pretty much up on this subject, hence the small smiley in
my post... but it always helps to give people something to think on
in that vein, expounding some more for those who are still unsure about
this stuff...

Scott actually asked about 209.8.161.0/24 which was a Class C in the old
days... the "problem" is that people still insist on [mis]using the Class
[ABC] designators... it makes more sense to use /0-/32, which is NOT
restricted to /8, /16, /24 and /32 and forget the Class X.

So, Scott and others should really think in terms of how many 2^N
addresses to block, determine the appropriate mask to do that... there is
a down-side though... it also means that people really need to learn how
to determine the proper MATCH address that will result from using a mask
that is not one of the traditional Class masks. For instance (including
*cast addresses):
 209.8.161.0/24 blocks 209.8.161.0--209.8.161.255
 209.8.160.0/24 blocks 209.8.160.0--209.8.160.255
 209.8.160.0/23 blocks 209.8.160.0--209.8.161.255 (=above 2 ranges)
 209.8.160.0/25 blocks 209.8.160.0--209.8.160.128

Note that 209.8.160.0/19 would block more addresses above & below the /23
example above while using the *same* (209.8.160.0) match address... this
is because 160 is coincidentally a nice binary number (0xA0) with plenty
of trailing 0s. However, specifying 209.8.161.0/16 as Scott asked *may*
not work (depends on software which reads/uses it) because after the /16
mask is applied, the address to compare against 209.8.160.0 would be
209.8.0.0 -- not a match! Though iptables does the Right Thing (using my
drop script):
# drop 1.2.3.4/16 all
   ^^ wrong! yet...
# iptables -L -v -n
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT 764K packets, 520M bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source
destination
0 0 DROP all -- * * 1.2.0.0/16
0.0.0.0/0
   ^^
It's a Good Thing to understand what goes on...

When building match_address/mask pairs, one must be very careful that they
are a *matched* pair; after all, specifying address/mask in a config file
is not guaranteed to be corrected, as in iptables... there are "subnet
calculators" available online to help with this... YIKES! A quick search
on google for "subnet calculator" gives 32,800 links -- BUT... there are
many for sale, some for free download, and others online...
unfortunately, I had to get to the 19th link (http://jodies.de/ipcalc)**
before I found one online (it's downloadable too) that is remotely helpful
for the novice in explaining the above address/mask pairing issue...

** enter say 209.8.161.1 and 23 and note the binary representations
returned...

Oh well... hope I made the point that giving a /N answer is less than
helpful for many folk who most likely don't yet understand that the
*resulting* match address, after masking, is what belongs in this
address/mask pair.

HTH,
Pierre

Most likely, something before it is allowing it. I suggest that you
change "-A" to "-I" to make it insert the rule at the beginning of the
INPUT chain instead of appending it to the end of the chain.
Oh that is IT! Thank you! With Bastille running I could not use -A, had
to use -I. Of course I went to flush the rules with -F and made my machine

in my opinion it has much less to do with the speed of the burn of the cd (but
is MUCH more applicable when it is a Rewritable CD) than the abilities of the
burner.
now about this statement "If you put in a x2 re-writable, it'll only write at
x2, if it's a x8, it'll only write at x8, irrespective of what you want it to
burn at ?"
It has also been my experience that it is VERY possible to (_attempt_ to) burn
at speeds (both higher and lower) than either what is rated on the disk, or
what is rated on the burner.

It certainly is possible to burn at lower speeds - I have never tried higher
ones because I'm not in need of new coasters. Perhaps, though, the statement
was meant to imply that the rating on the disk is the max that you could
burn?

[expert] Linux Mail Servers for Win clients

2003-03-04 Thread Norman
Hi all,
I have been asked if I can set up a Linux box to replace an NT server.
What has been requested is that it be file server, mail server, print server and firewall
and that external users should be able to access their mail and data.

I think that as the PC's ( 10 ) are running win95 and win98 I can use Samba without
problems and that the printer, which is a nearly new Samsung, Linux compatible Laserjet
can be accessed under cups.
I have recommended that they use a separate PC for the firewall and am thinking of using
smoothwall. I do not know whether the free version would be ok or whether I should get the
commercial version.
What I am puzzled about is the mail server. I have not used one myself and do not know if
any of them, qmail, sendmail etc can talk to outlook or messenger.I have not seen the
setup they have so am relying on the guy having given me the correct information at this
stage. They would be happy for me to set up a new PC to do this job and I am keen to have
a go. As far as I know this will be the first one in my area and want to encourage the use
of Linux.
Any ideas?

[expert] Mdk 9.0 on old tack

2003-03-04 Thread Anne Wilson
I have tried without success to install onto a very old box, IBM/Cyrix cpu.
It really isn't worth fighting too much, but I'd like to have one more go at
it.

All I have got, so far, is as far as the initial screen, F1, and first try,
typed 'linux nopentium noapic'. This brought just a blank screen.

I then tried to run one of the alternative kernels(?), but putting alt1 into
the same statement, but this was obviously wrong, because just before the
blank screen I saw that it was loading the alt0 kernel.

a) What is the correct syntax for trying the alternatives?
b) Is there anything else worth trying - before I kick the box out?

Outlook and Messenger have POP3 capability so you would need: 1)An email
server 2)A pop3 server.

You can use sendmail, postfix, qmail, exim, whatever you want for email. I
am migrating from Sendmail
to Postfix. One word of caution - an email server needs careful planning
and you need to make yourself
familiar with setup and security. While Postfix is pretty secure by
default one wrong setting and the spam
world can use your system to get their messages out. So take the time to
review the docs and spend some
time getting comfortable with one email server.

http://www.mrw.demon.co.uk has a detailed how-to for installing qmail and
qmail-pop3d on mandrake (Vince Danen maintains qmail packages for mandrake)

qmail + qmail-pop3d works just fine with windows mail clients.

There is also a qmail mandrakesecure mailing list if you are so inclined.

I have this nagging suspicion that the IBM/Cyrix chips you speak of may not be
supported under mandrake due to not being fully i586 compatible (the
architecture mandrake is built/compiled for)

I've used both.. but qmail only briefly..

if you know postfix, stick with it...

also, if you want to use something like amavis with your mta.. then you
can't go past postfix's content_filter.

NetWare 3.12? A, sniff. That was a pretty nice setup, my very first

I know this is all on the distro, but for the life of me I can't
remember the package names. First you'll need IPX/SPX support, which you
should be able to do in /etc/sysconfig. This looks promising:

The on-board video is turned off - I have always preferred separate sound
cards, though I believe on-board audio is improving.

I'm beginning to suspect that Mark is right, and it simply doesn't support the
cpu.

I can't really comment about postfix Vs qmail as I don't (and haven't) used
postfix.
In my experiance, qmail is very easy to setup and can be extended with such
things as mailing list management (ezmlm) and integrated with A/V filtering
(such as amavis).

- From the sound of your initial mail, you basically want to setup a small
office mail server - qmail is more than adaquate for that.
As long as you have a mail domain for this, you should be just fine.

Also, for only 10 people, a resonably specified box should be able to handle
mail/file/print serving without breaking a sweat.
Firewalling is always better on a separate box and Smoothwall is ideal for
that (or even Mandrakes Single Network Firewall)

It is actually a bogus error created when somebody with an nVidia card
compiles on their machine. There is a fix to apply, but if that is your only
error, I have found it is safe to install with --nodeps. What package are
you trying to install?

The default mailserver in Mandrake is postfix, and I highly recommend
using it. You will also need to decide if you want imap access,
especially if you want them to have access to some sort of webmail (pop3
works with some, but none that I would recommend :)). By simply
installing standard 9.0/9.1, postfix and imap2002, setting your hostname
and configuring your firewall to redirect smtp through to your postfix
box, you should be up and running in no time.

I use postfix too. The first time in my life I have had human readable config
files.

I recommend maildir, courier imap (with pop3), squirrelmail and RAV antivirus
($). RAV is $300/year but will save you that in time and aggravation.

Search the postfix archives and you will find plenty of starting
configurations.

Hmm, I'm using a Nvidia TI4200 Geforce here, with the 4191 drivers and I don't
have that exact file. I do have:

/usr/lib/libGLcore.so.1
/usr/lib/libGLcore.so.1.0.4191

If you have that then you can make a softlink so that apps looking for
libGLcore.so.2 will find and use libGLcore.so.1.0.4191.

Actually the 6x86 is fully i586 compatible But remember

The Pentium had the f00f bug

The AMD K6 had a bug which had no linux kernel workaround

The Cyrix had the coma bug (the two execution units could be bus-locked in a
loop each waiting for the other to complete, and both masking ALL interrupts)
Note that his is a hardware/microprogramming/architecture flaw, not a kernel
limitation. When certain code hits the processor at the right time and gets
split between the two execution units in the wrong way, a logic interlock
occurs.

Most likely the newest kernel is not set up to avoid the coma bug--it is
subtle and cannot be avoided in compiled languages, only by inspecting the
assembly or machine output could we see if it is invoked, and that is a LOT
of machine code to examine.

I have used Cyrix processors extensively. They were all 6x86 or M series and
all performed well on most tasks though they had a tendency to run hot.

The non-i686 compliant Chips one might be thinking of is the continutaion of
the IDT Winchip series -- the VIA C3 which is actually emulated by the
Transmeta. There We DO have a problem with the kernel not properly
identifying the processor (i686 when it is only i586) but only the 9.0 kernel
and there is a workaround.

Yes an earlier kernel (alt1,alt2) is certainly worth trying.

You do not need "nopentium" which is a dodge for the K6/K7 to avoid a memory
paging error.

Must of the test I could do with rc2 will be impossible without internet
runing.

Any clues to activate the internet conection for the cable modem will be very

All the tips I used for rc1 (put the name servers in resolv.conf, install
initscript from 9.0) doesn't run under rc2 :-(

Could anyone help me?

Thanks in advance

So after F1, what exactly should I type to try alt1 etc? My effort didn't
work (it still loaded alt0).

I have saw that from DrakConf is impossible to configure shorewall (that
happened also under rc1), so I have uninstalled shorewall and op!, internet

This problem must be solved before the final release.

That's good. I guess it's not easy for Florin (or anyone) to come up
with a model of what a secure network should look like that fits all
shapes and sizes, and have the whole system be free of bugs. There were
bugs in 9.0 RC1 relating to printing within a LAN (for instance) and
shorewall blocking the related network traffic because of Internet
connection sharing. However these were fixed after the bugs were
reported.

[expert] Mandrake's Golden Opportunity

2003-03-04 Thread Jim Hubbard
I think that now is a really good time for Mandrake to reconsider their "end
of life" policy. Here's how I see it: Redhat has effectively shut out the
very folks who made their distro popular by changing their update system to
a paid service and by saying that they'll only support a release for 1 year.
So now no admin in his right mind would download Redhat and install it on a
server or even purchase the standard box set for a server installation. In
fact, really the only viable Redhat server solution today is the "Advanced
Server" product. It's been a real double barrel slap in the face for many
loyal Redhat users.

Mandrake right now has the opportunity to gather many of those disillusioned
Redhat users in one fell swoop by announcing that they will provide security
updates for the upcoming 9.1 release for 3 years. Mandrake uses a superior
system for distributing updates (one that doesn't overload their own
servers), so that, coupled with Mandrake's excellent utilities, puts the
equation already in Mandrake's favor as opposed to Suse and other distros.
Now all that is needed is a clearly longer and reasonable support term and
Mandrake will be THE choice for small time admins wanting to leave Redhat.
This should be done before a group forms to build free updates for Redhat
products after EOL, which will happen I think in about a year when dead
versions start piling up.

I realize that supporting an old distro costs a lot of money and Mandrake is
currently broke. I also realize that Mandrake has already stated their own
EOL policy. However, I believe that if Mandrake can see this opportunity
and capitalize on it, their user base will expand greatly. Otherwise, many
admins will simply bite the bullet and learn how to live with Debian. I
like Mandrake's commitment to open-source, and I think they have the best
distro out there overall. But for now, I have to choose Debian. I hope
Mandrake can give me a reason to do otherwise.

Oh and one more thing. For God's sake please don't release iso's this time
until AFTER the retail product is on shelves.

Sincerely,
Jim Hubbard

[expert] Routing Question

2003-03-04 Thread Sevatio
OS: Mandrake 9.0

I'm not sure if this is possible but I'll see if any of you guys know
how to do this.

I have a cable modem connected to a hub. Then two linux boxes connected
to that hub. They each have their own IP addresses. When I transfer
files from one to the other, the speed is limited by the speed of my
internet connection (which is around 256kbps).

How do I make it so that my linux boxes can transfer files at the
maximum LAN speed of the hub? Or to rephrase: how do I route the
packets so that they don't have to go out to the internet and then come
back to the other pc but instead go straight through the hub from one pc
to another?

Thanks,

DO both boxes have public ip addrresses from your isp? One of those SOHO
router/switches translating private addresses to public would allow this.

Are the IP addresses in the same subnet? What are the IP addresses _and_

[expert] Weird time/mouse bug

2003-03-04 Thread Pierre Fortin
Anyone wanna see if this still exists in upcoming 9.1?

I had set my laptop's system clock off by 12 hours (AM vs PM). When i
noticed it, I issued a date command to correct it; but forgot to issue "
hwclock -w"... Tonight, the power plug fell out and when I noticed it,
the system had already reported:
Mar 4 22:54:14 gypsy apmd[1192]: User Standby
Mar 4 10:54:08 gypsy apmd[1192]: Standby Resume (54% 1:38) Battery power

Note how the time got reset! WHY is apmd messing with the time?

Worse... when this happens, ALL mouse dragging functions stop working --
can't scroll, can't resize windows, etc. In the past, I'd tried
restarting X to no avail... only a reboot appeared to fix the mouse's
dragging. This time, I simply reset the correct time and wrote it to the
h/w clock and mouse dragging is OK again...

Weird!!

The problem is most likely in the setup of the hosts. Hubs and plain
switches operate at Layer 2 and this is a Layer 3 (routing) problem among
the hosts -- they're probably not in the same subnet as viewed by EACH
host.

[expert] 8.2 -> 9.0, msec ran and now cups unable to bind socket

Hi,

I've just upgraded from 8.2 to 9.0 (just as everyone else is getting exited
about 9.1 :-) and have a printing problem. msec_find ran this morning
and now cups is unable to bind to socket 631. I am not sure if this is
a coincidence but I remember seeing previous posts about woes with msec.
I have tried to google the error message but have not found anything
that worked. I have tried assigning a higher port in
/etc/cups/cups.conf but that did not work. I tried:

Port 1631
Listen localhost:1631

I am running at standard level security. As I said, I recall seeing
similar posts in the past but can't quite find the solution.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I agree wholeheartedly with this assessment.

Certainly something could be worked out that would appeal to the admins
of whom Jim speaks, while still meeting MandrakeSoft's needs for cost
containment - perhaps tying availability beyond one year to Silver-level
MC membership, or narrowing the list of apps thus extended (in a method
that is clearly delineated right from the outset, of course) so that a
sysadmin can see, for example, that while they can still choose Sendmail
over Postfix at install time, only Postfix will be supported beyond the
standard EOL date ... there must be a workable solution in there
somewhere, one would think, and the potential upside to such a move
makes it worthy of serious consideration IMHO. Ideas, anyone?

Another possible benefit of Jim's proposal is the shift it could bring
in the (wholly inaccurate, but unfortunately all too common) perception
of Mandrake as a "limited" distro that is exclusively aimed at the
desktop user and the Linux newbie; by making plainly clear that Mandrake
has a strong commitment to the server space and the long-term user, the
company will be saying to the community, in effect, "Not only do we damn
well plan to still be around in three years, thank you very much, but we
also plan on being there /for you/ when certain other distros we could
mention will have long since forgotten that you even exist, except as
someone they can extort more revenue from for whole-distro upgrades that
you truly neither need nor want. That is the way of the Dark Side, and
we will have no truck with it."

Just my $0.02USD ... ;)

If I remember right typing a at the prompt after doing f1 will
give you the available kernels. There are additional ones available in
the past on disk 2 ... you might also try a text install. It could well
be that the problem is the video card not being able to do Frame Buffer
( I ran into this recently ) and could explain the blank screen.

Dang, I know this one.

It's caused when the builder of the application has an NVidia video
card and you don't I've had good luck with these by doing a nodeps
install. This is I fear going to become an increasing problem as more
and more builders have this card installed and since rpm has no way to
say "ignore this dependency" I don't know a way around it. Like I've
said the program itself doesn't need this lib... but rpm building
creates the dependency just because it's on the box of the builder.

Francisco

Saw this one in the Cooker thought it might help.

Same problem exist in RC2 as in RC1 and all Betas

Home LAN
6 systems, 5 connecting to internet though gateway system via dhcp with
each system needing a static IP.

During clean RC installation/Networking, either automatic or if manually
configured during Summary, all hardware component are detected and
properly configured and the pkgs dhcp-common, dhcp-client, and tmdns
are installed.

The problem is that this Does Not properly set-up this type system.
Once the new install is booted even though everything appears in order
and drakconnect even tells you that your network is properly configured
No Internet connection is possible.

/etc/sysconfig/network
NETWORK=yes

/etc/host
127.0.0.1localhost

You can start editing files galore if you aren't a Newbie, and even have
a clue as to what files to even look for, or if you are a Newbie and
this your first taste of Linux you could and might just say fuck-it and
boot back to Windows where everything works.

The solution is really quite simple.
For this type of network connection you do not need dhcp-common.
You do not need dhcp-client.
You do not need tmdns.

You Need dhcpd.
Once installed you need only run
# dhcpcd -d
the system will be assigned a static IP address, in my case it is
192.168.0.6 for machine #6 on the chain.
On subsequent boots dhcpcd will be auto started during boot.

/etc/sysconfig/network and /etc/host will not be changed but a new
config file will be present /etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd-eth0.info

[EMAIL PROTECTED] charles]$ cat /etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd-eth0.info
IPADDR=192.168.0.6
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
NETWORK=192.168.0.0
BROADCAST=192.168.0.255
GATEWAY=192.168.0.1
DNS=192.168.0.1
DHCPSID=192.168.0.1
DHCPGIADDR=0.0.0.0
DHCPSIADDR=192.168.0.1
DHCPCHADDR=00:50:2C:01:64:87
DHCPSHADDR=00:04:5A:5E:A0:85
DHCPSNAME='ICS '
LEASETIME=86400
RENEWALTIME=43200
REBINDTIME=75600
INTERFACE='eth0'
CLASSID='Linux 2.4.21-0.11mdk i686'
CLIENTID=00:50:2C:01:64:87

If the network configuration, this also applies to the stand alone
drakconnect, is not going to be fixed to resolve this issue could there
not at the least be an errata posted that addresses it.

This may sound unrelated, but bear with me...

Are there any kernel panic messages in /var/log/messages?

Do you have an ide-zip drive?

[expert] Zip disk question

2003-03-04 Thread Alan
I upgraded a system from 8.0 to 9.0.

Now I cannot find the Zip disk device. My old /dev/zip symlink has been
blown away and I cannot find the scsi->ide device it is supposed to be.

Any ideas on how to make this work again?
