I recently bought a new mobo/ram/cpu for a 2nd PC.. so don't really want to do the whole thing again for 1st pc. So less aggresive settings (never looked in /etc/sysconfig/harddisks) would maybe hide the problem? It might be a good idea for me to make these settings more aggressive, to be more likely to show the problem more often - make it easier to diagnose? - Everyone should have http://www.freedom2surf.net/ Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [expert] Problems, dma_intr, crc errors, crashing
I've had problems with my computer for a week or so now, and have been trying to diagnose the exact problem. I'm not exactly sure what is the matter, but if I relate the symptoms I hope someone will be able to assist me. Initially I assume the fact that problems started when I began using Mandrake 9.2 is purely a coincidence. Several weeks ago I noticed problems with applications randomly crashing, most notably those that ran most often, eg nautilus. Sometimes even my whole system would crash and require reboot. After a reboot I would notice that some files were just missing (I assume corrupt). Most notably these were icon files, as I would have desktop items without icons, but also certain application files would be missing/corrupt. As my main hard drive was several years old and had been getting noisier I put it down to a bad hd and replaced it. However even with the new drive I was getting these crashes, and they seemed to occur more often. And when a reboot was unavoidable I would reach lilo, but then get a message that a CRC check failed and the system was halted. This would happen several times in a row, and after leaving the machine off for a while, it would happily start and give me several hours before it all went to hell again. I chated to a few friends and they suggested that perhaps my IDE cables were getting old/damaged and needed replacing. Being the cheapest thing to replace I did so, and this has not helped. Sometimes I am logged into a terminal when it 'fails', and I see some sort of buffer journal error (can't recall exact words) however sometimes I can still type in commands, but am returned an I/O error and no programs will run - and I can't open a new connection to my machine, I can't open a new virtual terminal in screen, can't su to root, or even ls the directory; however last time it happened I could cd between directories, and btlaunchmanycurses was running in a virtual terminal and kept going, with the screen updating even. Another possible source of errors was my RAM (3 sticks of 256MB pc133 sdram). I installed memtest86 and tested my ram in several different patterns (all in, only 1 in, 2 in, mixing around slots). memtest86 returned only 1 error when all 3 sticks were in - noting the error to be at 318MB - as this is more than 256, and less than 512 I thought it was a good guess my middle stick of ram was at fault, and pulled it. Tests on the last 2 sticks usually revealed no errors.. but now and again did. So I borrowed a stick of working 64MB pc100 sdram from work (my mobo supports this) and ran my system for several hours. I worked the system hard, my swap was on the go consistantly, and I was switching between applications, playing video files, and had firebird and thunderbird open just to keep things active. While I received no immediate errors I decided that I would run fsck on my partitions. I switched runlevel into single mode, and ran fsck.reiserfs on a partition on my brand new hard drive, and it failed with: hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 {DriveReady SeekComplete Error} hda: dma_intr: status=0x40 {UncorrectableError} , LBAsect=28151643, sector=6217496 I then ran fsck.ext3 -c /dev/hdb1 (this is a new-ish drive that has never seen problems). During the check it gave me: hdb: dma_intr: status=0x51 {DriveReady SeekComplete Error} hdb: dma_intr: status=0x84 {DriveStatusError BadCRC} This CRC error reminds me of the CRC error when it would fail to boot up. So I am thinking that maybe my ram is not at fault, nor my hard drives, but that my motherboard is. Perhaps the IDE channels are dying, or the ram slots, or some other part of the mobo that I just don't know enough to be able to understand the errors. I don't know how to really test my motherboard, and I have pretty much got to the limit of my ability to test for problems. Can anyone offer me any advice of how to test for mobo problems? Do my errors sound like anything you recognise? Oh.. and no, I don't have an LG cdrom drive ;). [expert] pioneer dvr-105 issues
Just bought and installed a pioneer dvr-105 (dvd-r/rw burner). I've installed it as /dev/hdc. Two issues: 1) In xcdroast it only appears as an atapi device, rather than available as emulated scsi, unlike my plextor cdrw which appears as both. I tried to remedy this with adding 'hdc=ide-scsi' to the append line in /etc/lilo.conf but no change. Am I supposed to edit /etc/modules.conf ? This is what I already have in modules.conf: probeall scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi ataraid probeall usb-interface usb-uhci alias eth0 eepro100 above snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-slot-0 emu10k1 options bttv radio=0 card=9 gbuffers=4 2) The second problem is actually using the dvd burner. I believe cdrecord-2.01-0.a16.1mdk supports dvd burning, and I am using it. But xcdroast fails to either burn anything onto a dvd-rw, or to blank it. No way I am making dvd-r coasters until I am sure it works, at which point I hope not to make coasters anyway. Advice/assistance very much welcomed -- Azrael ("\''/").___..--'''"-._ `0_ O ) `-. I have a slight annoyance with my tv card. Now I don't just expect it to work with Mandrake, so I'm not complaining really ;) However during the install procedure for 9.0 all the 9.1 betas, and now 9.1 final my tv card is recognised as being a tv card. DMA works on my other 2 hard drives on the highpoint controller, without patching or any fuss. Just the new maxtor drive played up. I have just installed 9.1 beta 1 and I must agree with wow that it looks better. I use gnome as my primary desktop, and it just looks a touched more polished. The font config menu gives options for font smoothing. The pointer appears transparent almost (light grey) and has a shadow .. very impressive. It appears I have no audio or video drivers installed. Any ideas? Re: [expert] make NTFS visible and writable by users
I was under the belief that NTFS was writable under linux, and that it simply required a scandisk under windows, not that it actually did any real damage. Still.. writing isn't as important as it being readable to users.. how do I do that? Do NOT mount it rw. ntfs support in linux is only read capable. If you attempt to write to it, you will damage your ntfs filesystem so badly that it cannot be recovered. Do *NOT* mount it rw. The installation recognised my USB mouse and it worked fine. The installation reached the network detection part, and I allowed it to proceed. It detected my ethernet (intel) card, but not the speedtouch. I selected the adsl option anyway, aswell as network card, to install/configure. The NIC all went ok, the adsl -> alcatel failed due to needing mgmt.o and told me where to put it. I then booted into the new system, placed mgmt.o where it is supposed to be, and went though internet configuration again. Once again the NIC was recognised, and adsl not (tick in the box next to the NIC option, no tick for adsl). All the time, my USB mouse works. Went into harddrake2 and my USB controllers are both there. The alcatel is plugged into the same slot as it has always been. It works in windows. And used to work in Mdk8.2. [expert] installing lilo onto a partition - strange question
I have 2 hard drives. hdb and hde I boot of hdb, and have WindowsXp on it. The first half of hde is an ntfs partition. Mandrake 9 is on the second half of hde. / is on hde5 swap is on hde6 When installing mandrake, I opted to install lilo onto hde5 this always worked in mandrake 8.x and so I assumed it would still work. However when I did this, a dialog came up that never before existed. It said that it recognised I was installing onto a partition, and asked what drive I was booting off. I'm not quite sure what this question means. Does it want to know my what drive the whole system boots off, i.e. hdb or does it want to know which disk linux is on, i.e. hde. It gives me the choice to select hdb or hde. I assume it means to select hdb. But what does this question mean? What does it do? Does this have anything to do with the fact that the boot loader I use no longer recognises linux to boot it? (Following same procedures I always used for Mdk 8.x no longer work). This isn't a big deal, as I have a boot disc, and I'm happy to use it. Just curious over this new question in the installation procedure. thanks -- Azrael ("\''/").___..--'''"-._ `0_ O ) `-. [expert] mdk9 + alcatel speedtouch
I installed 9.0 and skipped the network setup. I then booted into mandrake and placed mgmt.o into /usr/share/speedtouch Then I went to configure network settings. I tried to configure alcatel speedtouch usb adsl modem. It requested cd 1 and installed files, and then completed. However the connection wouldn't work. Now as mandrake has a specific option to install the alcatel speedtouch adsl modem, I assume that this works fairly well.. and that therefore it is something I am missing. What should I do to get my adsl connection working? Many thanks -- Azrael ("\''/").___..--'''"-._ `0_ O ) `-. ( ).`-.__.`) (_Y_.)' ._ ) `._ `. ``-..-' _..`--'_..-_/ /--'_.' .' ((i).-'' ((i).' With 9.0beta3 my alcatel speed touch USB adsl modem (the frog) was recognised on installation, and upon attempting to install the relevant software for it, I was informed to download mgmt.o to place in a certain location.. all well and good.. but idea 1: Is it not possible for the installation mechanism to prompt the user to insert a floppy disk and attempt to get the file from it (for those of us that plan ahead.. but aren't smart enough to get it in the right place manually during installation). Re: [expert] winXP hosed partition table - help me recover vitalfiles
Thanks... I had done all that.. even edited lilo.conf to point to the new location for the lilo boot files (hdb6 instead of hdb3). However when I try to run lilo to take account of the changes.. it says it can't .. some error message that I assume comes from it not being able to read the system properly.. possibly because it's looking at the rescue(/etc) as root and not /mnt/etc .. I even copied lilo.conf to /etc of the rescue.. to no avail. I _do_ have all my files recovered. So there is no longer any panic. Just a desire to get th elinux system up with minimum fuss. When attempting to boot linux it kernel panics on mounting / (because maybe lilo hasn't been re-run yet.. so its looking for hdb3 instead of the now hdb6 / partition) Joseph Braddock wrote: >Try booting from the CD and go into rescue mode, again. Re: [expert] winXP hosed partition table - help me recover vitalfiles
Thank you all very much for your help, here's the latest: Went back into rescue this morning, and while messing around with mount I realised that the partitions that were previously hdb3 for / and hdb6 for /home were changed.. in so far as they were now hdb6 for / and hdb7 for /home. I have recovered all of my files. And so am no longer going to go on a mad killing spree. once again, many thanks for everyone's help! FemmeFatale wrote: >Azrael wrote: > > >>That actually helped! Re: [expert] winXP hosed partition table - help me recover vitalfiles
That actually helped! So thanks :) But there's a wist to the tale: turns out windows installation turned the 'C' (hdb1) from fat32 to ntfs. it's that I am guessing is the cause of the partition changes. The result is that doing the 'rescue' suggested lets me recover hdb6 but not hdb3. I can't find the files I want in hdb6 ... big suspicion that they are in hdb3. Yet hdb3 must sit right next to hdb1 - I don't know too much detail about these things ... and so the changes of hdb1 might have overwritten the border of hdb3??? Any ideas? [expert] winXP hosed partition table - help me recover vital files
I did a stupid thing. I'll admit that right upfront. windows was a bit unstable.. so I reinstalled. now my linux installation doesn't boot, due to partition table problem. Let me explain my setup: primary disk: /dev/hdb1-small windows boot partition for windowsXP FAT32 /dev/hdb3-/ for mdk8.2 using ext3 /dev/hdb6-/home for mdk 8.2 using ext3 secondary disk: /dev/hde1-WindowsXP NTFS plus additional FAT32 windows storage partition. I didn't touch hdb1 in my re-install... and I wasn't thinking straight and trusted windows wouldn't do anything except drop a few files there, as it already existed. I re-installed windowsXP into hde1. Even reformated. trusting this wouldn't affect the other disk. Now when I boot into linux.. or try to.. I get kernel panic errors. If I try to put in the mdk8.2 installation disk it can't read the partition tables and wants to nuke them all. If I use partition magic 7 (on windows) it says: Disk 1 has partitions created using a different drive geometry. This serious problem can lead to data loss. The program then just shows that entire disk without any partition info, as it doesn't want me doing anything to it. I am guessing my partition table is a llittle hosed. Frankly I don't care about losing 99% of my linux installation. However I would like to recover some files from my /home directory, those being my very essential M.Sc project files. They are not backed up anywhere else that places on my linux partition... after all I trusted their safety there more than on windows... I wasn't counting on windows being sneaky enough to find them on my linux partition and nuke them.. let alone for it to nuke the whole lot. As I said... I did a stupid thing. Can anyone help me recover my essential files? Is there a way to 'fix' the partition table? Is there a way to boot anyway and get to my files? Helllp!!! -- many thanks Azrael Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[expert] DVD viewing with xine - help needed
I have had problems viewing encrypted dvd's with xine - in that I can't do it. I used to be able to a year or so ago.. I have taken backwards steps it seems :) The default mdk 8.2 setup didn't work for me.. couldn't seem to install plugins for it. So I uninstalled and went with the following packages: package libcss-0.1.0-5 is already installed package libdvdcss2-1.2.0-2plf is already installed package libdvdcss2-devel-1.2.0-2plf is already installed package libdvdnav-0.1.1-0 is already installed package libdvdread-0.9.3-ogle1 is already installed package libdvdread-devel-0.9.3-ogle1 is already installed package libxine0-0.9.10-1 is already installed package libxine0-devel-0.9.10-1 is already installed package w32codec-0.50-1 is already installed package xine-dvdnav-0.9.10-0 is already installed package xine-ui-0.9.10-1 is already installed package xvid-0.20020412-3 is already installed package xvid-devel-0.20020412-3 is already installed I would have thought these would work.. but they did not. So I uninstalled them and went with a suggestion from the newbie list of: xine-0.4.3-fr1.decss.rpm that didn't do the trick for me either. So I am asking here. Can I not use this impressive list of packages above and somehow just enable libcss support? Help? many thanks -- Azrael Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
