[expert] Athlon XP motherboard advice
I'm planning to upgrade my motherboard/CPU combo to an Athlon XP system. I'm not looking for overclocking or onboard sound video (all the networking, sound and graphics will be using existing boards), just a solid, reliable motherboard that works well with Mandrake 9.0 Any recommendations? [expert] Changing Konqueror default web page
This is probably a stupid question, but I have tried to change Konqueror's default home page via Settings - Configure Konqueror, as well as the KDE options, but nothing seems to work (I'd like the browser to come up blank). Mozilla makes this much easier, but loads slower... Thanks, Dan Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[expert] IDE cd-rom burners
I'm trying to configure my LM 9.0 to work with an IDE CD-ROM burner. Hardrake2 lists the burder as /dev/hdc under CD/DVD burners. However, eroaster won't work with that. I've loaded the ide-scsi kernel module, but I'm not sure what to do next. My /dev directory contains no /dev/sc* or /dev/pg* devices; there doesn't seem to be any SCSI utilities on my system. How do I create these devices and connect one to the ide-scsi module so cdrecord -scanbus will see a device? Thanks, Dan Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [expert] IDE cd-rom burners
Ro You should have hdc=ide-scsi in your grub menu.lst entries or in the append= statements in lilo.conf (then run lilo) for scsi emulation to work at boot. Then, as root, you can run cdrecord --scanbus to detect the drive's connection. GCombust has detection buttons and K3b seems to do this automatically, to be sure the drive is detected and ready to use. I use GCombust. Should the append line in lilo.conf be before or after the append=devfs=mount quiet? When I load ide-scsi, and run cdrecord --scanbus, I get: cdrecord: Read-only file system. Cannot open '/dev/sg0'. Cannot open SCSI driver. cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'. Make sure you are root. [root@fatman etc]# I tried MAKEDEV -v sg in /dev/, and got: create sg0c 21 0 root:cdwriter 660 MAKEDEV: error making /dev/sg0: Operation not permitted So I'm pretty much stuck with hardware that works in Windows but not in LM 9.0 :( Dan Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? In konsole Settings Bell, choose None or Visible Bell and save with Settings Save Settings. Right-click for Settings or Show Menubar. [expert] How to disable error bell in konsole?
Hi, I'd like to turn off the beep that happens in konsole when an error occurs, e.g. hitting BACKSPACE too many times. I've tried configuring konsole through the KDE control panel, as well as the sounds options, but that doesn't seem to do anything. Any ideas? [expert] Fdisk errors
I have a small webserver running LM 8.2, latest updates, kernel 2.4.18-8.1mdk. Recently it crashed, and when I brought it home I noticed fsck gave me a unconnected directory inode on the / partition. I ended up having to run fsck several times to fix a series of inodes like this (about 10) manually. The machine came up fine every time, the files the inodes pointed to all seemed fine, only one of which was a system file, in this case the kernel module pnpbiosmap. Running fsck -c doesn't find any bad blocks; the hard drive is fairly new, it's not overheading, I can't find any bad files, and file I/O seems fine. Is this an error that I should take as a sign of immanent hard-drive failure, or as an isolated glitch? When I first opened up the box, the CPU cooling fan seemed a little noisy, so I replaced it; is it possible the CPU overheated and caused the crash and subsequent inode errors? Any advice is most welcome. Dan Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[expert] Hostname for virtual hosts
Hello, I have virtual hosts set up on a Mandrake server. I can access the different IP numbers by hostname, but when I log in to any of the hosts, they all show the hostname as the one assigned to the first IP number. Is there a way for hostname to be set to whatever domain name you're logging in to? That is, if I ssh to [EMAIL PROTECTED], I see host name as xxx.com, but if I ssh to [EMAIL PROTECTED], I see host name as yyy.com. Thanks for any help. Dan ___ WIN a first class trip to Hawaii. [expert] Virtual hosting
I'm trying to set up a LM 8.0 machine as a virtual hosting webserver. I have the kernel set up right, and two different domains set up to two different IPs on the server, call them xxx.com and yyy.com. xxx.com is set up in /etc/sysconfig/network as the hostname. Now if a user logs onto yyy.com they see themselves as being on xxx.com. Should I be leaving /etc/sysconfig/network with not hostname and domainname? How will I set up the different domain names to appear as different hosts depending on where the user logs on? Thanks in advance, Dan Axtell Outgrown your current e-mail service? [expert] CD-ROM automounting problems
I just installed LM 8.1 with the updates from the mandrake server on a new workstation. I'm having problem with the automounter on the CD-ROM The drive is an IDE DVD-ROM that worked OK when I installed Linux. Upon booting, the /dev directory always shows a broken sym link /dev/cdrom - ../cdroms/cdromX where X is a different number upon different boots. The correct device is /dev/cdrom0. I can manually mount data CD with that device, but not audio CDs. I am unable to delete /dev/cdrom and make it a symbolic link to /dev/cdrom0. Any ideas where I should start? [expert] Need help with iptables and LM 8.0
I'm trying to build some firewalls on a LM 8.0 box with kernel 2.4.7-12.3 and iptables 1.2.2. I'm trying to convert some rules I had on a 2.2 box written with ipchains, based on what I read in O'Reilly's Building Internet Firewalls. What I can't fathom is why I can type in some rules at a root prompt, but when I put the identical rules in a shell script I get syntax errors! for example, to open up the HTTP port (where XXX is my IP number) and close everything else: iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s 0/0 --sport 1024: -d XXX --dport 80 -j ACCEPT iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp -s XXX --sport 80 -d 0/0 --dport 1024: --tcp-flags ACK ACK -j ACCEPT iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp -s XXX --sport 1024: -d 0/0 --dport 80 -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s 0/0 --sport 80 -d XXX --dport 1024: --tcp-flags ACK ACK -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s 0/0 -d XXX -j DROP When I put those in a bash script, I get errors like: 'ptables v1.2.2: Invalid target name `ACCEPT Try `iptables -h' or 'iptables --help' for more information. I'm sure it's something obvious, but I can't see it. Any ideas? [expert] Kernel update for LM 8.0
Hello, I have a webserver and a desktop machine both running LM 8.0. I've been reading about some of the kernel problems before 2.4.12, and I'm thinking about upgrading. I recently tried to build the 2.4.13 kernel on my desktop machine, and when I rebooted a number of services (such as Apache) no longer worked. I'm sure I can make this work eventually, but the problem is this: My server is off-site, and I have no direct physical access to it. If the new kernel doesn't boot cleanly, it could be a matter of days before I get the machine and can test and fix it. The server is running the stock 2.4.7-12 kernel, and at one point when I was configuring it, I had problems with the IDE drivers for the High Point 370 chipset. The stock kernel was fine, so I stayed with that. My question is whether there is a reasonably safe way to remotely upgrade to a newer kernel, perhaps via an RPM, or should I stick with the ways things are? Any advice is appreciated. [expert] Help with Apache virtual hosting
First, thanks to all those folks who answered my question about modems. I'm setting a small web/email server using LM 8.0 with virtual IP addresses for different domains. However, one site has to be in two languages, where one URI points to an English subdirectory, and the other URI points to a Spanish subdirectory. Virtual hosting via IP numbers an Apache 1.3.19 works fine; combining it with named virtual hosting does not seem to be working. I am setting /etc/httpd/conf/vhosts/Vhosts.conf like this: NameVirtualHost 1.2.3.4 VirtualHost 1.2.3.4 User nobody Group nobody DocumentRoot /path/to/spanish ServerName spanish.org ErrorLog /var/log/httpd/span_error_log /VirtualHost VirtualHost 1.2.3.4 User nobody Group nobody DocumentRoot /path/to/english ServerName english.org ErrorLog /var/log/httpd/engl_error_log /VirtualHost What's happening is that whichever virtual host I put first becomes the default site for both URI's. Does anyone know how to correctly combine IP-based virtual hosts with name-based virtual hosts? The apache docs suggest the approach I tried above, but it doesn't work. Bingo! I forgot to put the www in the ServerName directives; I was typing 'www.english.org' and 'www.spanish.org', which failed, but leaving out the 'www' works. [expert] Help with postfix and virtual hosts
Hello all, a couple of years ago I set up a small server with a few virtual IP address, sort of like: mainone.com -- has a MX record in DNS alternate.org -- has no MX record in DNS. I had set up qmail with virtual hosting and was able to send and receive email from accounts at alternate.org without a problem, although I remember it taking a while to figure out how to do it! Now I've replaced the machine and upgraded to LM 8.0, but I can't get qmail to work. Postfix seems a lot simpler to configure, and it works right with mainone.com, which has the MX record in DNS. I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to do virtual domains so that I can send/receive from alternate.org like I could with qmail, or do I have to get the DNS record changed for alternate.org to add an MX record. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dan Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[expert] Need help with postfix virtual domains
Hello all, I have a small server with virtual IP address, call them mainhost.com first.org second.org mainhost.com has an MX record in DNS; the other two don't. When I set them up a couple of years ago, I used qmail and was able to send/received from local user accounts under all three domains. I've upgraded to a new machine with LM 8.0, and found qmail would no longer accept mail to the virtual domains, but would send. I'm trying to use postfix, and have had some limited success with both mainhost.com and first.org, but second.org won't receive mail no matter what I try. All the users are real users on the system, no virtual ones. I'm trying different things with /etc/postfix/main.cf. Can anyone outline what the difference is between myhostname, mydomain, and mydestination? Do I have to use /etc/postfix/virtual, or can I just modify main.cf? Any help is greatly appreciated.
