True! Just drag&drop the saved file to the printer. I always use that to
print out recieved faxe's cause the faxviewer (on my machine) has the same
problem.

I like gimp, and it would just be nice if I could get it

Frankly I'm not really impressed by the quality of the GIMP printer output,
but that could be printer specific. I prefer Cups for that.

This might sound stupid but did you check the command that GIMP isues to
print?
It defaults to "lpr" so if you're using Cups you'll have to point it to that,
using "qtcups' instead.
I'ts to be found under the button. Also be sure that
papersize is set right, it doesn't default to A4.

I'm not sure of the other packages (GIMP rulez!:)) but I know Staroffice
handles .tif images well --so if you've got it installed you could use that.
I always use it's vector graphics capabilties to 'lay out' printable pages
with multiple graphics on them. Works like charm:)

Let's do a relay here:)

My children are: 6, 8 and (almost)12 and thankfully I don't have a clue what
they are going to be or I want them to be. I just want them to have every
oportunity they can get. -Freedom of choice!- and not a disguised
straightjacket which M$windows and a lot more in modern society is.

And of course my children can boot and work Linux, they take to that easier
than I did and I saw to it that they would. Lucky them!
But there are more kids out there who need a hand.

2002-01-29 Thread Harm Bathoorn

Hello all,

Just wanted to scream, sorry about that:)

I've been to an IT evening at my children's (primary) school witnessing how
the teachers think they can turn my children into braindead M$windows
consumers.

The principal even came over to ask (he'd heard I was in computers) if I felt
like helping out in teaching the kids how to use Word , excel and
powerpoint. hence the shriek. He didn't even understand when I told him I
hardly had any windows apps knowledge, he thought I was talking DOS.

I already wrote an article for them on the subject but aparently nobody's
read it. Maybe it wasn't braindead enough:(
Look like I'll have to go for it a second time, and hope I get my message
across this time. I doubt it though, they've already got the local IT
vultures all over them.
What a waste of resources:(

[expert] Mdk8.2 trouble avant la lettre:(

2002-01-29 Thread Harm Bathoorn

Hi all,
I'm in a bit of a spot here, here's the dreary story:

I downloaded the 8.2 beta disk 1 and wanting to download disk 2 decided to
tranfer the first .iso image to the pc with the burner in it.
I use Gftp for that transfer. I had to make some room on the remote PC and
wanted to delete an old .iso (mdk7.0) image already there.
So great big clumsy me deleted the 8.2 image localy:(
This was all done using Gftp and the deleted .iso image being kept on a
seperately mounted partition.

The deletion was done in a second, giving me the idea that it's not really
deleted (yet). I mean the file wasn't that small!
Anybody got any idea's on where to look?
The .gftp/cache directory doesn't show anything nor do the /temp directories.
I'd hate to download the lot a second time so I'll jump at any straw.

That's funny I never did anything: Just installed linux (mdk7.0 upto 8.1 and

After completed installation just stuck the xircom card in as well (credit

Do a 'cardctl info' to see if it gets recognized as it should.

Is there any difference with the credit card version xircom560 10/100/56?
I shouldn't really think so.

My fstab entry includes umask=0 but I've noticed the same pains. Using
different floppy drives to no avail.
If I want a stable and sure floppy I first go and format it on a DOS box

I've had the problem since mdk7.2 and tried everything in the book.

Well I tried 'printing to file' with Star6. The thus made .ps file showed the

If you really need the Euro badly, you could try Star6.0. It's a lot faster

Well frankly you just made me discover that 5.2 defacto does not print the
symbol any more. I hadn't noticed as I use 6.0 for my facturations and
installed it around the same time as mdk8.1.
Why it does that I'm not sure, as I have set my locale to iso8559-15
in kde. Still staroffice 6.0 does the job so it has nothing to do with the
printerdrivers as staroffice uses the default ones on the machine.

Be asured though: KDE and the euro are stumping people all over Europe -all
with various degree's of non success. Maybe KDE3 will solve all this.

That's interesting, my experience is the either way round. Had Flash working
great but not Java. After the JRE1.1.3 install these symptoms appeared.

I still think it reeks of X because of the strange behaviour of my Wacom.
On the other hand it's user specific KDE settings that do this. Using another
Windowmanager like windowmaker enabled me to open konq as filemanager no
problem as did any other user on the machine.

I haven't retried yet, but next time I do I'll create a 'test'user first.

I got the same 'problem' after installing java-plugins.
Doesn't bother me enough to repair yet though.
What helps in my case: Do a login again and it
works. Funny thing: if I logout 'normally' my wacom pad stops functioning
this way all goes well.
Reeks heavily of X or NVidia (in my case) doesn't it?

That did the trick, thanks a lot:)
There weren't any differences in the pcmcia.config files (both Slack and mdk
only excluded irq 4) so I just excluded irq 3 as well.
Result: modem worked fine but a lost interrupt on the cdrom.
After removing exclude irq 4 they both function well.

Well actually Slack was still installed. The only exclude mentioned in
config.opts is irq 4 for the first built in serial port..

I copied the the relevant config files to a floppy and started re-installing
mdk7.2. Interesting to see if and which diffs there are. It'l take a while
with the p133 though:)

After that's worked out I'l be giving 8.1 a try. On installing 8.1 with
'expert' option the first demand is about optional 3rd party kernels on
specific floppys.
I'm not quite in the clear as to exactly which floppies are meant and how to
acquire them.

Well actually I'm not having any problems with the pcmcia slots. They work
fine with Mandrake, even the cdrom-card and the xircom-network card
simultaniously (which gave win98 quircks).
The gsm I use now (alas, the one with the pcmcia got stolen) has a dierct
connection to the serial port with an internal hardmodem in the phone, making
it defacto an external modem. Using the 'Hayes' standard protocoll works fine
under with Slackware but doesn't give the response it should with Mandrake.
It probably is a resource conflict, but I can't find the difference in the
use of them tween Mdk and Slack at a first check. That's why I'm asking, it's
fairly time consuming re-installing again and again so I want to check as
much as possible beforehand.

In regards to Mdk8.1 install, I got a working install using the 'vgalo
expert' option but the result was s-l-o-w due to the 'overweight' kernel.
Using the second disk for an alternative kernel doesn't work straight out due
to the pcmcia cdrom needing a boot-floppy.
There are various ways to get around this methinks but as long as I don't get
the modem going it's not worth trying. It's the essential tool in my case
when I'm 'on the road' (actually rivers and canals) to keep in touch with my
home-network.

[expert] ppp/modem blues secondtime

2002-01-21 Thread Harm Bathoorn

Hi all,
This is the second time I'm sending this question. I'm sorta dissapointed at
the silence. Does this mean that you all, despite all the noise you make
don't really know the difference between the slack PPP and the Mandrake PPP
(I certainly don't, but then I'm just a skipper trying to get his loaded
barge from Amsterdam to Paris and Vv--but I'm willing to learn, only I do
need help!) ..if so, that's just as bad as Windoze. Simply accepting all
that's delivered with the PC (or the cdrom) as the 'walhalla' and no
(real)questions asked!
Frankly I'm heavily dissapointed.:(
-

I've got a problem here.
I want to install Mandrake on my thinkpad(P133, 40m ram, 1 gbHD) -no problem
at all using 7.2
Here's the but: My gsm serial connection will not work and I realy need it to.
symptoms:
If/when the pcmcia card (cdromdrive) is in the socket I get 'sorry the modem
is busy' on a query (it's on ttyS1)
On removing the cdrom card I get a lot of gibberish on a query but at least
the modem is found.
Slowing down the modem to 2400 k reduces the gibberish that's all.

The exact same configuration using Slackware7.2 works flawlessly.
Anybody got any hints how to get this out of the way?

I badly want Mandrake on the laptop as I use it a lot to show off to windoze
users how linux makes old hardware look goood;)

It certainly is! but depends on the trouble you want to take and what you're
after.
On the one hand if it's a standalone PC you'd have to be to real clear as to
what you exactly want it to do -once that's clear it's only a case of 'being
bothered'. On the other hand if it's a PC that can be connected to a server
in a lan configuration the ltsp-project is something worth looking at
(http:/www.ltsp.net).
Frankly 486PC's have enough life in them yet, as long as you're sure to as
what you want to achieve.

[expert] cdRW in ext3

2001-12-20 Thread Harm Bathoorn

hallo all,

I'm a bit at a loss at the moment. I changed over to ext3 and I like it.
But I can't get my cd burner going properly. It jams practically the whole
machine, recovers and then just keeps on burning to no avail. No way of
stopping except by hitting the 'power' or 'reset' knob.

It was working before (though flaky) on my P4
mobo.
Sound familiar to anyone?

Good hunting,

Well, over here in Europe (mainland) we're moving on to the Euro. All those
'old socks' stashed away with local currency suddenly have to see daylight. A
taxcollector's wetdream!
So you might as well buy a mobo and a chip or two, if it has to go anyway:)

As root/su use 'urpmi.addmedia' and/or 'urpmi.removemedia' on the commandline.
