Ihad the same problem with configuring my LAN... Ill try and repost the original message.. Noone responded to my original. Could someone even at Mandrake try this... I have a bunch of things Ilike to tune into on occasion... some work, some dont... Ive tried a few things including: 1) changing transport to TCP 2) tried deleting my directory and letting netscape and Real player install defaults.. 3) tried copying stuff over from Mandrake 7.0 drive since I know it works on there . 4) tried installing an old version of both netscape and real player HELP!! anyone who might be able to figure this out would help my sanity since I cant seem to troubleshoot this one effectively. Re: [expert] how to disable shadow passwords - netatalk
I wanted to do the same thing on my installation. If memory serves me you need to do the pwunconv grpunconv as you already did. Check that the passwords are no longer :x: in the /etc/passwd file. You now need to disable the password verification and generation in PAM. Change the directory to /etc/pam.d and edit the passwd file. Comment out the lines as shown and rewrite these lines with the mods shown... hope that helps... let me know if it works... its been a while since I did this: #%PAM-1.0 auth required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so shadow nullok accountrequired /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so #password required/lib/security/pam_cracklib.so retry=3 #password required/lib/security/pam_pwdb.so use_authtok nullok password required/lib/security/pam_pwdb.so nullok hope it helps Werner ark wrote: on 6/11/00 11:30 AM, Joel VanderWerf wrote: Hi, does anybody know how to disable shadow passwords? I've tried pwunconv and grpunconv. But then when you change your passwd you still get an 'x' in /etc/passwd and you can't log in. Why am I doing this? Well, when I installed Mandrake 6.1 last summer, shadowing seemed like a reasonable thing to do, even though my machine is a dial-up client. However, I just installed netatalk and wasn't been able to get it working with shadow passwords (problems compiling DES module). So I rebuilt it without SHADOWPW defined. Now some passwords do work and some don't work. And after you run passwd on an account, the password will definitely not work. (The effect of passwd, which I checked using find / -mount -mmin -2 was just to put an 'x' in passwd. So apparently it thinks shadow is in effect but can't find the shadow file and doesn't complain.) At this poing I'm wondering if a full upgrade to 7.1 would be the easiest thing TIA! I have netatalk working fine with shadow passwords. Try installing from an RPM instaed of rolling your own. gavin
Re: [expert] Linux-Mandrake 7.1, ide tape, and installation. . .
Norvell, I had the same problem... I was clearly due to a bad ISO image when I FTPed the ISO image. You can check this by finding the MD5sum. Its unlikely this is your problem but the symptoms were the same where some packages didnt want to install. Werner Norvell Spearman wrote: (1) Has anyone else gotten error messages from 7.1 installation similar to: ``Error installing package foo-bar-1.2.3. Continue or cancel?'' Choosing continue would let install finish. After booting system for 1st time, I could then install the problem package. On my PC at work the ``bad'' package was one of the Mesa rpms, and at home a Zope package didn't install. I did both installs from the same CDs which a co-worker burned from iso images. Bad CDs maybe? (2) I already sent this as a bug report, but thought I'd ask here since I haven't heard back yet: --- My tape drive worked flawlessly with Linux-Mandrake 7.0. Before installing Linux-Mandrake 7.1, I backed up all my important data to my HP Colorado 8GB internal IDE tape drive. After backing up the data, I restored to a different directory to test it and had no problems. After wiping out my 7.0 install and installing 7.1, I can't read anything from my tape. I'm attaching the error message. I tried a different tape with no success. One weird thing, however: I can write to tape with 7.1 (tar cvzpf /dev/ht0 files), I just can't read from it. I tried /dev/MAKEDEV and MAKEDEV.ide, attempting to re-generate any possibly bad dev entries for the tape. This also didn't help. Using the previous version of tar (from 7.0) didn't help, nor did taper have any success (taper also could write, but not read tape). I re-installed 7.0 and restored all my data with no problem. - [root@localhost tmp]# tar xzvpf /dev/ht0 tar (grandchild): /dev/ht0: Cannot read: Input/output error tar (grandchild): At beginning of tape, quitting now tar (grandchild): Error is not recoverable: exiting now gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file tar: Child returned status 1 tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors [root@localhost tmp]# tar xzvpf /dev/nht0 tar (grandchild): /dev/nht0: Cannot read: Input/output error tar (grandchild): At beginning of tape, quitting now tar (grandchild): Error is not recoverable: exiting now gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file tar: Child returned status 1 tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors --- Thanks very much for any help with this. ---Norvell Spearman
[expert] Kernel
Hi everyone... Ive made some posts recently regarding kernel compilation/installation.. Ive tried several suggestions with no luck getting my smp stuff to work If I compile and install a new kernel I do: make clean make dep make bzImage make modules make install make install_modules Right after I run lilo although I think make install does it. The computer now boots but has problems with the sound modules (I had to compile the AIC7xxx driver into the kernel) If I upgrade (or downgrade my kernel) using the binaries(RPMs), what is required to change the kernel.. Could someone please educated me a bit on what the kernel requires at boot and educate what these things are: initrd - I understand this is the RAM disk at boot but what needs to be done with this if the kernel changes System.map - Have no clue module_info When I try to link these manually I still get a kernel panick on my SCSI module Kernel panic : aic7xxx.o not compiled for current kernel ___smp. Module was compiled for ___linus. Something to the effect of the above line occurs.. Ive tried linking vmlinuz and module_info and such to the new SMP info and then ran lilo... Im simply confused as to where the SMP module is trying to load this from... Shouldnt it load it from the smp modules directory? Ive even tried to pull down a redhat smp kernel module and I get this same kernel panick. I know this kernel works since its running on an identical machine. Consequently, I know that I must have forgotten to link or run some script... Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Werner

Just out of curiosity, what are the security levels and what do they do? I dont remember this ever being an issue during any installation of Redhat or Mandrake? Other stuffwhenever I change the volume in kmix, a reboot resets it to the default (ultra-loud) level (any help with that would be appreciated) And another oddity, I was in Kpm and noticed that the graphic doesn't show my swap partition at all (the bar representing how much swap is used shows 0/0).
