Re: [expert] 9.0 to 9.1

2003-06-04 Thread mycal62
I would like to say that I was very pleased with version 8.0 . I also
found that other .1 versions like 7.1 , 8.1 did not function very well
and did not fully work.

BUT

9.1 has been and is my favorite version to date. It is perfectly stable
for me on three different boxes.

My home box is an epox 8kta3pro based athlon 1700+ ati tnt 2 32 mg
video, soundblaster live system,
everything works perfectly. my sony vaio pcg-fx215 laptop is also
perfect. my work box is used in a
information management production environment, running an asus mb, and
is similar to my home box ,
but it's also just dandy. YMMV, still even though some things are a bit
different and this is a list to help fix problems, MDK 9.1 is very good
and an improvement for many of us out here in the real world, and is
much better than XP or any other win products. So I had to learn a
couple of new steps, at least my hardware works under MDK 9.1 ( my tv
card at home will even display better in MDK )

instead of just complaining , why not say hey this is my problem with
this hardware, how do I fix it?

I already have 9.0 on BOTH installs it's just one doesn't work properly
and I wanted to replace
it with the one that does. so this really isn't necessary right?

mtab is dynamically generated, leave it alone.

understood , won't touch it.

should be /mnt/aroot/etc/lilo.conf if following my prev. example... When
you just run "lilo" it assumes you want to work on the current root
filesystem, which in this case is /dev/hdb. You need the switches to
tell it that you want to modify /dev/hda instead.

what is /aroot ?

lilo is on the hda install and reads from /boot on the hda install as
that's where the mbr is.

If I copy over the hdb install to hda, I loose lilo since it's not been
installed on the second OS ( hdb )
even if I copy /boot from hda and restore it to hda after the change,
I'll still need to install lilo and adjust it right?

also the OS on hda is already quite hosed. I wanted to replace it with
the working version to save me setting up everything all over again with
a re-install . In fact it won't boot into X now, so it probably won't
hurt whatever I do.

If I can get everything switched over while I'm on hdb and make all
adjustments manually before trying to boot
hda maybe it will atcually work !

Thanks in advance for your answers.

let me get this straight.

all I want to copy are the partitions on /

they already exist on hda5 and are mounted under /80 on the hdb install ,

so if I do a ( for example ) :

boot to 9.0 on hdb
init 1
cd /
cp -a /bin /mnt/80/bin

this will copy bin on hdb5 to hda5 and write over the old files that are
there now?

and if I do the same for /dev, /etc, /initrd, /lib, /sbin, /usr, /var

it will copy these to the new location ?

then all I have to do is mcedit /etc/fstab , and mtab and fix the
entries and then adjust lilo.conf, rerun lilo

and reboot?

also what does this mean and is it needed here ?

vi /etc/lilo.conf and change any hdb references to hda
	/sbin/lilo -r /mnt/aroot -b /dev/hda

Then use the KDE Control Center > System > Printer or printerdrake to
remove your printer (software).

Then install it again as a new printer with the appropriate driver.

If you are using cups, you can also try as root:

service cups stop

then:

service cups start

My HP printer has both parallel and USB interfaces, so you can try
using the other interface and install it as a new printer (all
diffferent software).

Have you tried enabling your disabled (software) printer through the
K-menu MCC, System, printer, select your printer and try the icons,
then print a test page.Remove any stalled print jobs in the job list.

Failing that, as root in a terminal run printerdrake, double click on

print a test page.

It's not the hardware it's the OS. Obviously , not ALL Mandrake

does not work in my box. This would be, according to the many
people that say so, my crappy hardware's fault.

But why does it work OK with 8.2, then?

I would be more inclined to say "Mandrake 9's stock
kernel has bugs that arise only on certain kinds of
hardware" more than "it's a hardware related problem",
as the latter gives the idea that the hardware is to blame,
which it is not.

Re: [expert] second mouse ?

2002-12-12 Thread mycal62
I used the info below to get my usb mouse working in Mdk 8.2 :

The following lines in my XF86Config-4 file allowed me
to use both a USB mouse and the mousepad in my laptop
with mandrake 8.2.
However it doesn't work in mandrake 9, only the usb
mouse works.

Re: [expert] Nvidia driver chaos!

2002-12-10 Thread mycal62
Yes a windows reinstall , even on top of the old one will distroy lilo.

but getting back to lilo is very easy!

if you made a mandrake boot disk during install , or can make one now,
do so .

have it handy, and go ahead and reinstall windows. ( just do it on top -
don't need to format nothin' )

once your done and windows is back up and running, simply reboot with
the mandrake disk in the floppy drive
and boot from that. when it shows this boot: type linux single
and hit enter.

when it boots up you will be in console mode. at the login type root and
enter password.

now just typelilo and enter .

That's it !!!

now lilo is back and you can dual boot again.

If you want to know how to triple or quadruple boot mail me off list.

to get the original lilo mbr reinstalled? Is there a simple procedure for
copying the lilo config file, and then replacing the new win98 mbr with lilo?
I'm not a linux expert, and am unclear on this.

Re: [expert] A win-processor!?!?!?

2002-12-01 Thread mycal62
before you get a hammer, consider this,

I run a xp 1700+ processor , and have run 8.0, 8.2, and 9.0 all without
any difficulty or special configuring.
I run an nvidia tnt2 32 mg agp video card, and have run several others
though no voodoo card though, so don't know.
I would guess it's another problem though not the cpu. ( 9.0 was a bit
harder to get working though )

Re: [expert] 8.1 - very unstable

2002-01-08 Thread mycal62

I posted earlier, and just wish to mention, that in all fairness,
some people will have issues which will be unresolveable, despite buying
a distro,
having New hardware and having some experience with Linux.

I have always paid for a boxed set including mandrake 7.0, 7.1, 7.2,
8.0, and 8.1,
as well as a dozen other distros including suse and redhat.

I await 8.2 as I could not successfully install 8.1 on a new MB/ 1000
Mhz athlon
New Hard drive / Mem/ etc.

Otherwise , why would people repeatedly say "your mileage may vary" on
so many things.

Don't misunderstand, I am an almost exclusive Mandrake man Period !
Only keep the windows junk on a seperate box for One application
which Will never run in linux. ( No it really never will )

Mandrake Is absoulutely awesome, and The best of the pack, however it's
not perfect yet,
nor does it work with all hardware configurations out here- Yet ;-)

I really wanted to install 8.1 but it simply was too flaky to keep.
Yes support Linux ( esp. Mandrake! ) by all means Pay for cd's that will
help.
But let's be candid and and admit we are all waiting for a distro with
everything
that's just right, otherwise we would not upgrade.

end of rant.

Re: [expert] How do I install kde 3.0 beta 1 in 8.0

2001-12-30 Thread mycal62

thanks again .

Got kde 3 runnings but most things don't work of course.

on the point to update 2.1.1 ( not 2.2.1 as you mentioned ) I have never
gotten kde to successfully udgrade to 2.2.anything. the current version
is 2.1.1 not 2.2.1.

everytime I have tried it shows a dep for a lib-file which I can't find
anywhere .

maybe I'll just wait till 8.2 comes out and reinstall.

would like to stay up-to-date but stock 8.0 works ssso well!

thanks again for trying to help me though.

Thanks Tom that was helpful. ;-)

looked in rpms and they do install to /opt

Now last questions (I hope) any order to install? and since rpms go
where I want can I use package manager to install them? ( quicker than
by hand, less typing )

[expert] How do I install kde 3.0 beta 1 in 8.0

2001-12-28 Thread mycal62

Ok I have dwnloded the rpms for 8.0

Now I want to try it out.

But I don't want to break the stock kde 2.1.1 that came with 8.0
can I install it along side 2.1.1? if so how do I do that?
I don't know how to install to say, /opt from the terminal

any help ? or know of a good article on how to do this?

I like 8.0 very much and have it running perfectly !!!

But ( with a sheepish smile ) I like the look of kde 2.2 and 3.0.
especially want to try Liquid - use acqua style now.

can't get 2.2 to install on my 8.0 box . ( probably did something wrong
again. )

If someone knows how to get 2.2 running or 3.0 or if we go nuts maybe
even 2.1 and 2.2 and 3.0 all at the same TIME !?!?!

Ok I'll calm down.

anyway, all help is greatly appreciated!

lm_sensors used in conjunction with gkrellm works very nicely for me.

the lm_sensors package you need will depend on which distro you use.
check the lm_sensors site for info here are the ref:

  this is LM_Sensors

 Gkrellm

HI ,

have a strange problem,

on rebooting from win98 I get a strange message during bootup

it says for this file :< /etc/rc.d/rc :[ missing "]" >

can the rc file be regenerated ?

Have tried to install lm_sensors which require adding lines to
/etc/rc and /etc/modules.conf

and the message happened after the second reboot after this mod.

any suggestions?

[expert] Updating kernel 2.4.3-20

2001-12-10 Thread mycal62

Howdy,

How can I update , or install a later Kernel, when doing a new install
of LM 8.0 from the 3cd box set? The default kernel is 2.4.3-20mdk.

I wish to update it enough to use a ext3fs if possible, without updating
to 8.1. ( sorry but it won't run on my setup , though I wish it did! )

anyway , do I have to update in stages to gain ext3 support?
and can I use ext3 on all partitions including / ?

If not someone please tell me if I have to stay with a Reiserfs instead?

If I need to compile a special kernel to do this , please direct me to a
tutorial on how to do it that is written in average user-speak.

Not a novice but somethings I haven't tried to do yet.
Like compiling a kernel from scratch.

any and all help is very much appreciated!

Thanks in advance

small rant:

I too agree with the statement at the end of your post.

Mandrake Is great , I on the otherhand have too often been far from great!

anyone with half a brain can install Mandrake - ( push button - insert cd -
click a few times and Miracles of miracles, it works. Period ! )

I have it running on different hardware setups no prob bob.

No, It's not PERFECT but 8.0 is very close!
and s much better than win-anything.

Maybe 8.2 will be perfect?

oh - don't listen to me I'm just a human.
