[expert] Hard disk repartitioning
Dear all, I have a 20GB hard disk with a 5GB primary partition(C drive, DOS partition) and 15GB logical partition(D drive, extended DOS partition). The C drive has WinME and all application softwares and has 3.74 GB of free space. The D drive has all my data and has 9.84 GB of free space. I want to install Mandrake Linux 9.1 on this box. i want to have a dual boot system and donot want to lose any existing data. can anyone please suggest how do i repartition my disk. ive read a few articles and HOWTOs on this and frm what i gather is that a dual boot system should look like this: 1)Windows partion (FAT32) 2)Linux partition 3)Swap partition 4)Partition for data accesible from Windows and Linux(FAT32) now these articles explained this repartitioning when their original disk had a single primary dos partition. so my problem is how do i repartition my disk which has a primary and a logical partition? also i have 128MB RAM. so what should be the size of my Swap partition? thanks for your help . ak. [expert] PCMCIA configuration.
Hi, I am newbie to Linux Mandrake... but I have a small problem which nobody till now could solve. I have installed LM8.0 on my laptop. The very first instalation was great. Every pice of hardware was recognized by Mandrake... but 3 weeks later I lost my PCMCIA card which I use to connect to internet vía cable modem. The 3Com Megahertz CardBus was gone... ...because of lack of money in that moment I had to buy a new very chip PCMCIA which even don't have a name o it... First I have pluged it and use Win2K... there was no any problem it was detected as Realtec rtl8139(A)... ...then I used it in Mandrake...and nothing... well I decided to install LM once again with a new card insid the slot. I have made it... but nothing... I can't manage to make it work. First using DrakeNet when I try to configure connection I receive message: insmod'ing module 8139too failed at /usr/lib/libDrakeX/modules.pm line 510 But I don't understand anything in this archive... so... I was trying to find out what is going on other way. I used dmesg|more and I can see this: ...Linux PCMCIA Card Services 3.1.25 Kernel build 2.4.3-20mdk... ...PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 00:0a.0 PCI: The same IRQ used for device 00:09.0 ... 8139too Fast Ethernet dirver 0.9.15c loaded PCI: No IRQ known for interrupt pin A of device. Please try using pci=biosirq 8139too: region #0 not a PIO resource, aborting ... I try cardctl and PCMCIA works ok... it respondes for commands: productinfo "CardBus PC Card", "Fast Ethernet CardBus PC Card" mafid: 0x, 0x021b function: 6 (network) PCI id: 0x10ec 0x8139 eth0 device doesn't exist. I don't know how to "obliged" system to make it. I can imagine the problem is in IRQ. I was trying to make some changes in bios, but nothing... even soundcard stops to work... So what shall I do Anybody could help me. I really want to get this PCMCIA working, but I don't know what do I need to do... Please help me. Any idea is welcomed. [expert] How to change IRQ number????
Hi, I have LM 8.0 on my laptop and I have problems with PCMCIA card. It looks like sound card and PCMCIA card bus have the same IRQ numbre (according to the dmesg|more). I don't know if it is possible, but it looks like. System does recognize CardBus, but can't detect it o something like that So I would like to change it, I want to make work my PCMCIA. Does anybody know how to change IRQ numbres? I was trying command cardctl and it doesn't work, just because ther is no eth0 device... What shall I do??? Thanks for help. Re: [expert] One-time passwd -- how?
That's really interesting -- what version of Mandrake are you running? I've got 8.0 here on a test box and when I issue this command, set the maximum password age to zero, and log in as that user, it simply gives me a warning saying that my password's going to expire in 0 days. When I set the '-W' flag to zero, it logs me in simply with no warning (as if nothing was ever done). BTW, this is with shadow-utils-2826-5mdk Thanks for the reply, -Charlie - Original Message - From: "Pierre Fortin" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "x" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, July 06, 2001 11:52 AM Subject: Re: [expert] One-time passwd -- how? > x wrote: > > > > I can't seem to find it in the passwd man page and I know this is possible > > (at least in HP-UX), but I've previously been able to set a one-time > > password for new users (or if they'd forgotten their passwd) where upon > > logging in, they'd be prompted to create a new password. > > > > That's kind of a thick sentence, but in other words, say user 'foo' needed > > to get her passwd reset. [expert] One-time passwd -- how?
I can't seem to find it in the passwd man page and I know this is possible (at least in HP-UX), but I've previously been able to set a one-time password for new users (or if they'd forgotten their passwd) where upon logging in, they'd be prompted to create a new password. That's kind of a thick sentence, but in other words, say user 'foo' needed to get her passwd reset. As the sys admin, I do a one-time passwd change for the 'foo' user to 'bar'. Upon logging back in and entering her new 'bar' password, the 'foo' user is now prompted to change her password. She cannot go further until she enters a new valid password the system likes. Does this make sense? Anyway, I'd really appreciate any info on this because I know it's possible (at least in HP-UX so I'm presuming it's possible in linux), but for the life of me, I can't find out how. Thanks in advance, -Charlie

Re: [expert] Two problems with ssh.
Hello Woody, Thanks for answering. I commented out only one line. I followed the instructions at www.openssh.com in the FAQ. It states 2.6 - X11 and/or agent forwarding does not work. Check your ssh_config and sshd_config. The default configuration files disable authentication agent and X11 forwarding. To enable it, put the lines below in your configuration. X11Forwarding yes ForwardAgent yes NOTE: For users of Linux Mandrake 7.2, Mandrake modifies the XAUTHORITY environment variable in /etc/skel/.bashrc, and thus any bash user's home directory. This variable is set by OpenSSH and for either of the above options to work, you need to comment out the line: # export XAUTHORITY=$HOME/.Xauthority They even included a note specially for Mandrake's 7.2 version users. On the other hand, I am not able to use the variable $SSH_CLIENT in a bash script since the bash shell doesn't authomatically export its enviormental varibles to its child processes. One must export it explicitly before opening another bash shell to execute a script. Thanks for answering again. Greeting from Mexico. Fabian. When I try to open some graphical programs from the ssh server on the client, I get the following message: channel 0: istate 4 != open channel 0: ostate 64 != open channel 1: istate 4 != open channel 1: ostate 64 != open X connection to ahuizotl.uam.mx:10.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown). channel 2: istate 4 != open channel 2: ostate 64 != open X connection to ahuizotl.uam.mx:10.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown). channel 3: istate 4 != open channel 3: ostate 64 != open X connection to ahuizotl.uam.mx:10.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown). channel 4: istate 4 != open channel 4: ostate 64 != open X connection to ahuizotl.uam.mx:10.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown). And the program obviously doen't open. On the other side at least Linuxconf does. 2. I cannot use the variable $SSH_CLIENT inside a bash script. From command line the "echo $SSH_CLIENT" works fine, but echoes nothing if executed inside a script. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Fabian.
[expert] NIS problems.
Hello, I am trying to set up a NIS server an client by the first time and I am having a client problem with it. I have been following the steps provided at Mandrake Campus: http://www.mandrakecampus.org/ The problem is a conflict between the server's groups' id numbers and their clients' counterparts. When issuing "ls -l" in the same directory shared through NFS one always gets different files group ownwer. The shared partition is /home/. On the server side everything works right: [fabian@ahuizotl fabian]$ id fabian uid=500(fabian) gid=504(fabian) grupos=504(fabian) [fabian@ahuizotl fabian]$ ls -l total 700 drwxr-xr-x3 fabian fabian 4096 feb 22 13:28 Desktop/ -rw-r--r--1 fabian fabian 685420 feb 9 11:36 giroide.ps drwx--2 fabian fabian 4096 feb 22 19:42 mail/ drwx--2 fabian fabian 4096 feb 20 12:50 nsmail/ -rw-r--r--1 fabian fabian 54 feb 21 14:13 telfonos drwxr-xr-x3 fabian fabian 4096 feb 21 10:31 tesis/ drwx--2 fabian fabian 4096 feb 20 11:33 tmp/ But on the client side, the gid 504 belongs to ntools [fabian@ixtlan fabian]$ id fabian uid=500(fabian) gid=504(ntools) grupos=504(ntools) [fabian@ixtlan fabian]$ ls -l total 700 drwxr-xr-x3 fabian ntools 4096 feb 22 13:28 Desktop/ -rw-r--r--1 fabian ntools 685420 feb 9 11:36 giroide.ps drwx--2 fabian ntools 4096 feb 22 19:42 mail/ drwx--2 fabian ntools 4096 feb 20 12:50 nsmail/ -rw-r--r--1 fabian ntools 54 feb 21 14:13 telfonos drwxr-xr-x3 fabian ntools 4096 feb 21 10:31 tesis/ drwx--2 fabian ntools 4096 feb 20 11:33 tmp/ I want to share through the local network files for authentication porpouses. Hello, It seems that the pdf2ps (and viceversa) program comming with Linux-Mandrake 7.2 doesn't work well. What program should I download in rpm format to replace the existing one? I cannot find anything named like pdf2ps.rmp. Thanks in advance. Fabian.
Re: [expert] Use of "make oldconfig" while compiling a new kernel.
Hello, I asked this several months ago. And since now I am putting hands to work on changing the kernel to run MOSIX in a couple of computers, I would like to make sure I understood. I run Linux-Mandrake 7.2 with kernel 2.2.17 and would like to upgrade it to 2.2.18. I have /usr/src/linux-2.2.17/arch/i386/defconfig file. I guess its name stands for "default configuration". Then I should copy such file to the new kernel tree, namely to /usr/src/linux-2.2.18/arch/i386/defconfig. The following step would be to make oldconfig to let the kernel have the old kernel configuration options set. Then I should do Make xconfig to adjust the new kernel options if any. The next steps would be just as described in the kernel HOWTO. Thanks for reading this e-mail. Fabian. [expert] Adding other RPM's to the CDROM installation.
Hello experts, I have some questions on adding RPM's to the standar installation procedure. I got a README file from http://www.linux-mandrake.com/drakx/README I suppose some that some of you experts have automated the installation procedure for a large number of computers and have read that file. It describes some files nedded by DrakX to work. The problem is that I cannot find the files such guide claims to exist in the CDROM installation. I downloaded the ISO images of Linux-Mandrake 7.2. My main interest is to add other RPM's to the Mandrake/RPMS directory of the installation CDROM. Here are some instructions taken from the README file: >If you have your own rpms you want to add, or make your own updated cdrom, you >just have to update: >- Mandrake/base/hdlist: use ``misc/genhdlists --distrib .'' >- Mandrake/base/depslist: use > ``misc/gendepslist2 -o Mandrake/base/depslist Mandrake/base/hdlist.cz2'' > >Optionnally, you can modify Mandrake/base/compssList and compssUsers. >Also, mdkinst_stage2.gz must be remade if you modify files in Mandrake/mdkinst. >See below for information about these files. Below I find the following among other information: >Mandrake/base/hdlist.cz2 >table of rpm's headers. >! Need to be remade when Mandrake/RPMS changes (with >``misc/genhdlists --distrib .'') ! >Mandrake/base/depslist > for each packages, tell which package it depends on. Also contains the > size for some (obscure) bloody reasons. > ! Need to be remade when Mandrake/RPMS changes ! > (with ``misc/gendepslist2 -o Mandrake/base/depslist > Mandrake/base/hdlist.cz2'') >Mandrake/base/depslist.ordered >more compact depslist with closure done, internally indexed >Mandrake/base/mdkinst_stage2.gz >for the ramdisk. live sytem in ext2 filesystem gzipped. >generated from Mandrake/mdkinst tree using misc/make_mdkinst_stage2 >See ``Ramdisk or not'' below for more. In short, to add other rpm's to Mandrake installation one must follow the next steps: step one: Place the RPM's in the Mandrake/RPMS directory step two: Do the following commands misc/genhdlists --distrib . misc/gendepslist2 -o Mandrake/base/depslist Mandrake/base/hdlist.cz2 Questions and observations. 1. I don't have any hdlist.cz2 file, only hdlist1.cz and hdlist2.cz. What's the difference? 2. I don't have any Mandrake/base/depslist file. The one I have is Mandrake/base/depslist.ordered. Why is the first one missing? 3. What commands should I issue then if I add other RPM's to the Mandrake/RPMS directory? 4. What happens if a program the new added RPM depends on is not in the Mandrake/RPMS directory? Will a warning message appear? 5. I have noticed that some files are obsolete. Why does those files still appear in the Mandrake/base/ directory? >Mandrake/base/hdlist >obsolete in 7.1 >Mandrake/base/compss >obsolete in 7.1 >Mandrake/base/compssUsers >obsoletes comps. It contains the different user classes like >``Graphics >Manipulation'' and ``Games'' 6. What are the Mandrake/base/compssUsers and Mandrake/base/compssList files for? The explanation below is pretty obscure. >Mandrake/base/compssUsers >obsoletes comps. It contains the different user classes like >``Graphics >Manipulation'' and ``Games'' >Mandrake/base/compssList >for each packages, it gives the appreciation for each type of user. >used to choose packages >(see beginning of perl-install/pkgs.pm for more) 7. Fwd: [expert] Bootup Failure in init scripts
Hi Cecil and list, Ok, I fixed it. I guess what happened was that when I hard reset the pc and ran the e2fsck those 'fixed' inodes deleted /sbin/klogd , /sbin/syslogd , /sbin/hdparm and /sbin/lilo. I guess from Cecil's comment that the two logd's were the culprit. Once I upgraded those packages it boots fine now. Could someone who knows about these klogd and syslogd give a hint as to why they would prevent it from booting when missing even though I could still boot with the method below. Also why does e2fsck seem to randomly delete files or inodes from a hard reset? I wrote this mail from within my linux but only after the above fiasco. Any other suggestions would be very appreciated. Thank you. Re: [expert] mandrake installation problem
Hi, I think you have the same problem I had before. Did you enable hard drive optimizations in the install? If so try again without that setting. However, he seems to have some problems concerning the initialization of his ide-controllers. At the first reboot during installation, the system freezes and goes into hard lockup after the initialization of ide0 and ide1. After that he is forced to do a hard-reboot to get the system going again. This problem also occurs when he adds the linux ide0=noautotune line. Is there anyone who has some experience with this problem? If so, I would really appreciate some feedback. [expert] Bootup Failure in init scripts
Hi all, 6 Feb 2001 I have a habit of making things hard for myself:-( Yesterday, I was playing with hdparm to put my 2 drives to sleep as I was just doing lengthly reading on the net. My current info is: hda1 is a fujitsu 2GB with Win95 hdc6 is a Maxtor 10GB with Mandrake7.2 Dual boot, P1-200, 128MB, 4MB ATI, SCSI card, SBAWE64(doesn't work with LM) and ethernet card. Default bootup init 5 Using WindowMaker What I did was su'd to root, hdparm -Y /dev/hda1 (drive shut down properly) hdparm -Y /dev/hdc6 (drive shut down properly) changed desktop and everything froze solid. did a hard reset and let it reboot, it droped me to a shell. I did e2fsck /dev/hdc6 (/ ) said y to missing inodes as I usually do:-? e2fsck /dev/hdc7 (/home) e2fsck /dev/hdc8 (/usr) exit to reboot then ... rgh ... it went through the usual bootup stuff with [OK] until http. http said [OK] but the next one xfs I think said it was loading but nothing more happened:-( So I rebooted again with boot: Linux 1 for single user This got me in. so I cd /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/ and start running startup scripts by hand and all went fine till the one after (http script), it stalls. I CTRL-C and try other scripts, all scripts including the ones that worked a second ago stall. From experimenting I found that if I kill minilogd all the scripts will again work and I can load all of them by hand. Where and why does minilogd come from and what does it do? Any suggestions on how to get it to boot by itself again? It has been working since Oct 2000. Things I have tried so far: rpm -U --force initscripts.rpm rpm -U --force apache.rpm rpm -U --force xfs rpm Thank you in advance. Hello again, Thanks for answering. Actually, to be able to send the message asking for help I had to delete al the content from the /tmp directory. There was a lot of garbage in there. Despite the cleaning of such directory, I am not able to print from kghostview. From other applications I can do it as expected normally. [expert] lpr: : temp file write error lpr: stdin: empty input file.
Hello, I'm having problems printing from a machine using Linux Mandrake 7.0. The error messages are the following: lpr: : temp file write error lpr: stdin: empty input file and were generated while trying to print from kghostview. I cannot even print from root. It is affecting any kind of document; it refuses to print simple text files as well. Thanks in advance for reading this e-mail. Fabian.
[expert] I cannot print in a remote samba server with cups.
Hello to all, I am writing since I have a problem trying to print into a samba server from any X Windows application using cups. The computer I am trying to print from uses Linux Mandrake version 7.2 and the cups related program versions, according to the "rpm -qa |grep cups" command output, are libcups1-1.1.5-3mdk cups-common-1.1.5-3mdk libqtcups1-1.1-2.1mdk qtcups-1.1-2.1mdk cups-1.1.5-3mdk cups-drivers-1.0-3mdk From a shell I am able to print a text file using lpr normally. After trying to print from any X Windows application, the printer is disabled as the lpq command reports: [fabian@ahuizotl fabian]$ lpq lp is not ready RankOwner Job File(s) Total Size 1st fabian 34 (stdin) 606208 bytes The content of /var/log/cups/error_log is the following: I [04/Feb/2001:09:56:35 +] Job 34 queued on 'lp' by 'fabian'. Re: [expert] Problems with Mandrake 7.2 and vmWare
Hi, I am running VMware Workstation 2.0.3 under Linux-Mandrake 7.2 and don't have any kind of problems. Maybe someone in the various VMware newsgroups could help you: news://news.vmware.com Greeting from Mexico, Fabian. [expert] Printing from X Windows disables CUPS printing. Partial solution.(fwd)
Hi, I sent this message to the newbie list but didn't get any answer. Hopefully I will in this list for experts. Thanks to all. Fabian. -- Forwarded message -- Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2001 13:33:12 -0600 (CST) From: "[X-UNKNOWN] Peña Arellano Fabian Erasmo" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Printing from X Windows disables CUPS printing. Partial solution. Hello again, I read the cups log for erros and found the following: After sending the printing job via Netscape (or any X Windows application in KDE) with lpr command into a samba server, the /var/log/cups/error_log had this Job 18 queued on 'lp' by 'fabian'. Started filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstops (PID 8540) for job 18. Started backend /usr/lib/cups/backend/smb (PID 8541) for job 18. ERRDOS - ERRfilexists (The file named in a Create Directory, Make New File or Link request already exists.) opening remote file (stdin) PID 8541 stopped with status 1! Saving printers.conf... The printer then disabled: [fabian@ahuizotl fabian]$ lpq lp is not ready Rank Owner Job Files Total Size 1stfabian 11 (stdin) 1509376 bytes Then I candelled the job with lprm. The following was appended to the error log: Job 18 was cancelled by 'fabian'. Setting lp printer-is-accepting-jobs to 1 (was 1.) Setting lp printer-state to 3 (was 5.) Saving printers.conf... Finally I had to set the printer ready via [root@ahuizotl /root]# lpadmin -plp -E and the log appended Printer 'lp' modified by 'root'. If I instruct Netscape to use "lp -t name" instead of "lpr" I get the appropiate printing! I did a Google search and found the messagge that I append and don't exactly understand. It seems that some parenthesis must be deleted in order to printing within Mozila to work. Can anyone tell me in which file such pathenthesis must be deleted? Another solution could be to set the KDE printing system to use "lp -t name" instead of simply "lpr". How could this be done? - Hi, It's most likely the parenthesis that cause the spooler to flip alright. I met this problem outside cups when running with the redhat setup lp system and printing from staroffice 5.2. Luckily there I was able to edit the filter script and get rid of the (). I will probably stumble upon it soon since I've got cups now via mandrake 7.2. Guy. Hello, I have LM 7.2 in my computer using CUPS to print. There is an
[expert] Multisession cd writing.
Hello, I use Linux Mandrake version 7.2 in a computer which has the i810 chipset and a HP CD writer 9150 (9100 series). The cd writer was already installed by the time I installed Linux. The problem is that I have't been able to write more than two sessions in a disc. I have already read the CD-Writing HOWTO and the README.multi file distributed with the cdrecord program. No error message appears at any of the steps of creating the iso image with mkisofs and recording into disc with cdrecord. The third session simply doesn't appears listed after typing [promt]$ ls /mnt/cdrom2 file_name_first_session file_name_second_session The first time I tried to append a third session, a Windows machine was able to see the third file added to the disc, but Linux never did. In the following attempts neither Windows nor Linux were able to see it. cdrecord seems to write it fine, it even can retreive the first block number in the first track of the third session and the next writable address of the following unwritten session.
