Re: [expert] mdk 8.0 on a laptop
No experience with this laptop, but a couple of generic Mdk8 on laptop things http://www.linux-laptop.net/ not mandrake specific, but a really good resource for gotchas, workarounds, etc, by laptop model. NTFS 5 read does work, at least on my desktop. (don't dare try write!) Partition magic will resize NTFS partitions, and is generally a really nice program to have for this sort of thing. I had Mandrake 8 on my Dell Inspiron 8000 (256 ram, GForce2 chip, DVD, etc). You'll probably have a few gotchas: - Nvidia drivers (obviously), search mandrakeforum.com for Nvidia, I wrote the instructions for setting it up (specifically for the Go chip on this laptop) - Sound (for some reason if you use headphones while root you get loud static each time it reads the drive). I'm not sure if this is a reiserFS bug or maelstrom 3 bug or what, but always use a standard user. - Lots of problems with full screen games (I get that little 1/2 size window instead of full screen), and a lot of GL stuff doesn't work without tweaking. - Haven't yet toyed with the DVD Aj --- civileme <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > On Wednesday 18 July 2001 22:29, Bill Kenworthy > wrote: > > Hi, > > I am looking at a gettting Dell Inspiration 4000 > or 8000 laptop (which > > ...). NTFS is proprietary and secret, and the new version witn Win2K cannot even be read. The 4000 has a severe BIOS bug that prevents the use of kernel 2.4 with RAM > 192M, and it is not AFAIK tested for the 8000. Another block is the hardware location of ACPI which thwarts those who would wish to use the enterprise kernel for greater than 1024M RAM. With large amounts of memory, the Dell Laptop does work with kernel-2.2.19-10mdk (available during install), so there are no real barriers to using the notebook, but it will seem a little cranky to get going that first time. Re: [expert] mdk 8.0 on a laptop
I have it running on a Dell Inspiron 4K with CDRW and Psion modem PC Card. Only sizeable problem: 3 months and waiting to get the network part working. Dell sold me the Xircom 10/100 CBE2 PC Card, which has driver problems in Linux. I returned it and ordered the ActionTec (P/N 64SCJ) mini-PCI combo card: weeks in production (for a 3rd party part!) and then my order mysteriously gets canceled, only Dell doesn't tell me. Now the part is on order again. Another week and Dell better take the whole thing back. Dell uses the 3Com and ActionTec mini-PCI combo cards internally. The 3Com is okay for networking, but the winmodem does not have Linux drivers. The ActionTec uses an Intel Pro NIC and a winmodem for which Linux drivers exist. By now Dell is using a different video subsystem: check xfree86.org to confirm support. The DellTalk Forum is a good place to look at what Dell owners are saying. I used Partition Magic for the partition work. My 4K came with WinME though. Be careful you don't blow away your W2K boot. Take a look at the HOW-TOs on the net. - Original Message - From: "Bill Kenworthy" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, July 18, 2001 4:29 PM Subject: [expert] mdk 8.0 on a laptop > Hi, > I am looking at a gettting Dell Inspiration 4000 or 8000 laptop (which > ...). [expert] mdk 8.0 on a laptop
Hi, I am looking at a gettting Dell Inspiration 4000 or 8000 laptop (which ...). Only extras are 256M memory and cdrw. Has anyone installed mdk 8.0 on a similar beast, and how successful. It will have to live with win2000, at least for awhile, are there any gotchas (such as can mdk resize ntfs to make room for itself?) BillK
