Thanks very much for your answer. Unfortunately I was unable to find it in the June issue table of contents, nor via search at linux-mag.com http://www.linux-mag.com/2003-06/toc.html Would you happen to have a closer reference? Thanks very much beforehand. Thanks also for the encouraging replies of several others on this topic. Lessee... It is the English (and therefore European) version... June 2003 Page 88. There is an interesting article in Linux Magazine's June edition that may pertain to this. The subject is a project called RULE (Run Up-to-date Linux Everywhere). It comes with an XFree86 replacement called Kdrive that may be of interest. Jim C. Dick Gevers wrote: Hi all, Mandrake has no hardware requirements for monitor size or resolution. I have a 13 inch monitor which supports only a resolution of 640x480. Some KDE screens give me big problems with this, e.g. Konqueror > Search and Panel taskbar configuration. When I file a bug at KDE I get as an answer that they support only 800x600 minimum. If this goes on I will be forced to look for another window manager. In GNOME, however, the problems are bigger: many applications are unworkable for me. The other window managers I found to have each their own problems and or bugs. IceWM looks like the best option. (Blackbox and Fluxbox are very counterintuitive for me, Xfce and Waimea are buggy. AfterStep I didn`t manage to get running). Am I being forced to buy a pricy monitor to be able to continue using Linux? I can`t believe that. Long ago when I was using Windows I hardly had such a problem, at least not with M$ programs, but I never want to go back to Windows, if I can avoid it. A larger video monitor I have no room for and a larger flatscreen I cannot afford. I am quite worried that soon Mandrake will have the same requirement as KDE. I would appreciate any ideas and thoughts about which way we are evolving in this respect and/or how I might solve this problem. Windowmaker is close (and it's a fork from AfterStep so it should be familiar if you like that one.) but ... ICE I agree is the best. One thing you might try is to make your virtual resolution larger than the physical resolution. By moving your cursor to the edge of the screen it will scroll across the virtual desktop. The virtual screen can be 800x600 or 1024x768 or even larger. You can also try using an interlaced mode. On some monitors (though not likely on yours) it allows an 800x600 screen at a reduced quality. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

I like and install KDE for the apps and use IceWM all the time. I've only seen the KDE desktop a couple of times to see what it looks like. It is very nice but my PII-300 Mhz laptop is much happier with IceWM. regards, Richard. > Thanks and regards, > =Dick Gevers= Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? In my opinion, the problem is your monitor, not the requirements of the window manager. 800x600 is _very_ reasonable requirement, and not worth an ounce of "worry". A monitor that handles only 640x480 is from the dark ages--I can't even remember the last time I saw one. Such a beast belong on machines (such as some servers) that are run strictly from the commandline. As for "being forced to buy a pricy monitor" I think you're being overly dramatic. You can buy a new monitor, at the same physical size as your existing monitor, and with much better resolution and image quality for less than $100, shipped. You can get one refurbished for _half_ that price, and a used one for even less. Hell, find an active computer nut, and he'll probably give you one in exchange for a pizza. True, but I haven`t got the space to put it anywhere. I am already too close to the monitor with just the keyboard between me and the screen. A larger one I couldn`t accomodate. Actually if you put XP or 2000 (or possibly even 98/ME) on your machine you will very likely have problems also.. Many windows apps will pop up a message to the effect: "you must be running 800x600 or above and 16 bit color to use this application." after which the installer will exit. Besides, what is the big deal? you can pick up a second hand 15 inch monitor for about 30 dollars AUD.. Thats not an expensive monitor. rgds Franki >-Original Message- >From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Dick Gevers >Sent: Tuesday, 19 August 2003 11:08 PM >To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >Subject: [expert] Worried about resolution requirements for Mandrake > > >Hi all, > >Mandrake has no hardware requirements for monitor size or >resolution.
