In my opinion, the problem is your monitor, not the requirements of the
window manager. 800x600 is _very_ reasonable requirement, and not worth
an ounce of "worry".

A monitor that handles only 640x480 is from the dark ages--I can't even
remember the last time I saw one. Such a beast belong on machines (such
as some servers) that are run strictly from the commandline.

As for "being forced to buy a pricy monitor" I think you're being overly
dramatic. You can buy a new monitor, at the same physical size as your
existing monitor, and with much better resolution and image quality for
less than $100, shipped. You can get one refurbished for _half_ that
price, and a used one for even less. Hell, find an active computer nut,
and he'll probably give you one in exchange for a pizza.
