[FairfieldLife] google maps close up on airplane [2 Attachments]
Earlier I was taking some pictures, from one side of the SF bay to the other, and decided to see what the area looked like, using Google Maps. Then I noticed the plane, and when I zoomed in, not only was the resolution amazing, but it also looks like the plane was traveling fast enough to create multiple images, during the satellite camera exposure.

[FairfieldLife] Google to censor searches
Google has promised a worldwide block on search results linked to child abuse. In an about turn the media firm has agreed to make changes which will prevent illegal child pornography appearing for more than 100,000 different searches. The restrictions will be launched in the UK first, before being expanded to other English-speaking countries and 158 other languages in the next six months. I can't see this having much effect as paedophiles probably don't use Google (or Microsoft, which is following suit). And if you can block porn images why wouldn't you (for example) block footage of hostages being beheaded?

Everyone knows that you can't have two people at the same time edit a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet online with multiple data entry technicians. In fact, doing anything online with Microsoft Office is not nearly as easy as using Google Docs. Most of us are already are comfortable using online tools like Yahoo and Facebook. So, if you need a device that works on the cloud then, the Google Chromebook may be for you. All you have to do is log in using the Chrome browser and get to work. Amazon review: Google Docs allows individuals to use their on-line document, spreadsheet and presentation software free of charge and, even better, you can collaborate with up to 50 people on the same document, practically in real-time. Re: [FairfieldLife] Google? There is an alternative . . .
The BIG problem with Google is lack of senior management. Their credo is to turn a bunch of young people loose on projects and see what they come up with. So some young engineer thinks that maybe capturing the wifi SSIDs of home networks when driving a Google Maps car through a neighborhood might be useful someday and hey it might actually reward him with a better position at Google. If he had a more senior manager looking over his work he might be asked if he didn't feel that was an intrusion into privacy and maybe something Google might not want in the code because it WOULD raise privacy issues. Of course there will those who call fie on this because supposedly Google was funded by the CIA. Maybe they were. I call Google a lemonade stand because of the lack of senior guidance at the company. I beat them hard over their engineer dumps which are supposed to be documentation for Android. Lately I've been doing some C# programming and once again when I look up something for C# on Microsoft's site I get a short concise definition as well as a too the point short example of the function. On Android there is some long winded rambling description and some poor example code that sorta fails to explain use properly. Google feels they don't have time to finish things because they need to stay ahead of the crowd and rush on to the next big thing. Re: [FairfieldLife] Google experience of Unity Consciousness miracle
You may have noticed that if you click on a link that Google provides it isn't just the URL anymore. It is a long string where the URL is included and then a bunch of other identifiers use to track you. Since the original URL is between the url= ampersand and another at the end one should be able to create a Firefox plugin that removes all but the original URL. IOW, making their tracking useless. In my case I'd be doing them a favor because I use Google searches all kinds of ways and not for things I'm actually interested in. For instance I may be stumped on how to spell a certain term in a post so I just type in on Google how I think it's spelled and usually get a correct spelling along with a definition so I can be sure that is the word I wanted. I even use Amazon for finding things to recommend other people so Amazon thinks I am interested in all kinds of things I'm not. :-D One could also create a random term generator for Google to really mess up one's profile rendering their tracking useless. These tracking ideas are usually cooked up by marketing and you can just bet some of the engineers argued against it but marketing always trumps. I had some big arguments with marketing where I worked. Interesting use of technology -- outing. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/28/google-search-feature-gaydar_n_985407.html It makes me wonder what would happen if Google, repository of Truth for so many millions, decided to go all Facebook on people's asses and extend this service to normal people. There is simply no question how it would class guys who write lengthy love letters to their male gurus. SO gay. The question of how it would rate women who do the same for female politicians they're enamored with is still pending. And what about the gamers who are obviously more in love with their latest software download than with any flesh- and-blood sentient being? Do we need a new term for them, like AI-BI? :-) Fortunately Curtis and I are safe, as are many others here. Hetero we write, and hetero will be our rank. Very rank. :-)

[FairfieldLife] Google gets sidhis!!! Displays what you're looking for before you finish
The newest thing from Google is Google Instant -- a kind of psychic feature that instantly displays the results for what it *thinks* you are searching for. You don't even have to press Enter; it displays results as you type in your search criteria. I managed to get ahold of a Beta copy and tried it out by typing TM and it seems to work. Full article under the screenshot below. :-) [photo] 'Google Instant' Search Feature Unveiled At Google Press Conference Google has unveiled a new feature called Google Instant http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/09/search-now-faster-than-speed-of-\ type.html designed to help users access search results more quickly and easily than ever before. Marissa Mayer, Google's VP of Search Products User Experience, called the new feature a fundamental shift in search, according to CNET http://news.cnet.com/8301-30684_3-20015729-265.html 's live blog from the event. Google introduced Google Instant at a press conference http://searchengineland.com/live-blogging-google-streaming-search-event\ -how-to-watch-live-50064 Wednesday and explained how the new tool works in an official blog post http://www.google.com/instant/#utm_campaign=launchutm_medium=vanutm_s\ ource=instant : Faster Searches: By predicting your search and showing results before you finish typing, Google Instant can save 2-5 seconds per search. Smarter Predictions: Even when you don't know exactly what you're looking for, predictions help guide your search. The top prediction is shown in grey text directly in the search box, so you can stop typing as soon as you see what you need. Instant Results: Start typing and results appear right before your eyes. Until now, you had to type a full search term, hit return, and hope for the right results. Now results appear instantly as you type, helping you see where you're headed, every step of the way. Many think of Google Instant as 'search as you type,' but really it's search 'before you type,' Mayer explained. There's almost a psychic element to it, because Google tries to predict the results and present them to you in real time, she said, according to Ars Technica http://arstechnica.com/web/news/2010/09/google-search-becomes-psychic-w\ ith-dynamic-results-predictions.ars . Mayer estimated that Google Instant may be able to save users 2 to 5 seconds per query. Google Instant will be the default setting for users. As the screenshots below show, with Google Instant, the search results returned vary as the user types in their query. Type H into Google's search box, and Google will show you the results for Hotmail, with several other suggested search terms (Hulu, Home Depot, Hopstop) in a drop-down menu. Adding another letter--H-U--automatically causes the search results to refresh, and returns new suggestions. Story continues below Advertisement Several have noted that Google Instant will censor NSFW results. ReadWriteWeb's Marshall Kirkpatrick noted in a tweet, NSFW results will not be instanted, even if you have safe search off. search results go blank for naughty queries. I want to turn off the Google censor on Google Instant. Try searching for a naughty word. Doesn't work. I feel like I live in China, Robert Scoble tweeted. Google CEO Eric Schmidt teased the new feature in a tweet earlier today. I predict big things happening today at Google. I started today, and quickly learned that quieting my thoughts is pretty hard. I lasted about 2.5 minutes before so many to-do items were bouncing around in my brain that I had to take a break and write a bunch down before restarting. But I did enjoy my first session. I also managed to get my pulse rate pretty low. Now I have to avoid the trap of seeing how low I can get my pulse to go and just enjoy the quiet. Feel free to join me in my challenge this monthat only 15 minutes a day, it's a pretty good way to try out a 30 day challenge! http://tinyurl.com/34fc9vc

The only thing he's *ever* done is sit behind a curtain and Google shit. :-) There are whole generations of people now who don't feel that there is any difference between Live and Memorex. When it comes to searching for information to bolster their rants, prejudices, and to help them win their petty tyrant battles, Google is *enough* for them to consider themselves an expert, someone who *should* be paid attention to. Such people really, really, really don't like it when someone pulls back the curtain and points out that the person being so authoritative about a subject *knows nothing about it but what they read on Google*. What these kinds of people *DO* with the information they mistake for context and real knowledge is another matter. Some use it -- as you suggest -- to make themselves look smart. A person who *in person* would be literally speechless on a subject *because they know nothing about it* can on the Internet spend a couple of minutes Googling and then come roaring back into a cyberdiscussion *pretending* to know something about it. It's like the early Hermione in the Harry Potter books, except that Hermione actually *did* know all the answers. The Google versions of Hermione, because they're not functioning in real time in a real conversation, are like Hermione with a cheat sheet, pushing the Pause button on a conversation and running for Google to find something to say. And, as you say, some do this in an attempt o make themselves look smarter or more knowledgeable than they really are. However, there is another form of intent that one sees often in the Google addicts of the Internet. *Their* intent in going to Google in the first place is not *just* to make themselves look smarter. There is a deeper intent that involves *making someone less look dumb*. THAT is what was going on in this whole discussion, Curtis. The entire *intent* of the person trotting out information from Google as if it were real knowledge was *to make you look stupid*. You know it, she knows it, and everyone else on this forum knows it. *Without* having to Google it. :-) And one of the reasons is that you have successfully pulled back the curtain on many of her pronounce- ments and pointed out what they really are -- facts gained not from real experience and real study but from a few seconds on Google, but then presented as if they *were* the result of real experience and real knowledge. Pay no attention to that fat woman behind the curtain. The more she tries to convince you that she knows more than you do, the more likely it is that she needed Google to do it.

And the person behind the curtain *likes* the curtain and *hates* Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain because the curtain hides the fact that there was never ary reason why anyone *should* have paid attention to him in the first place. Whatever happened to casual conversation? We seem to be in an age of exactitude where everybody so concerned that they may be wrong about something they spend time looking stuff up on Google before they post. Imagine if we were trying to have a conversation around a table in restaurant or bar this way. Everyone would be jumping on their laptop, tablet or smartphone before they said a word.

[FairfieldLife] Google Results on TM
I have put the phrase transcendental meditation into Google and it indicates approximately 640,000 results are available (I presume this is worldwide in the English language). Even given the small number of new meditators since the late 70's, this seems like very few results. For a comparison of sorts, I put in the term scientology and Google indicates over 6 million results. I have no idea how the number of results are generated. Anybody have any idea if the numbers of results have any meaning regarding current awareness of TM by English-speaking persons worldwide? Science

Re: [FairfieldLife] 'Google wants your hard drive'
Robert wrote: Industry critics warn of danger in giving internet leader more power by David Smith Google is to launch a service that would enable users to access their personal computer from any internet connection, according to industry reports. But campaigners warn that it would give the online behemoth unprecedented control over individuals' personal data. The Google Drive, or GDrive, could kill off the desktop computer, which relies on a powerful hard drive. Instead a user's personal files and operating system could be stored on Google's own servers and accessed via the internet. The long-rumoured GDrive is expected to be launched this year, according to the technology news website TG Daily, which described it as the most anticipated Google product so far. It is seen as a paradigm shift away from Microsoft's Windows operating system, which runs inside most of the world's computers, in favour of cloud computing, where the processing and storage is done thousands of miles away in remote data centres. Home and business users are increasingly turning to web-based services, usually free, ranging from email (such as Hotmail and Gmail) and digital photo storage (such as Flickr and Picasa) to more applications for documents and spreadsheets (such as Google Apps). The loss of a laptop or crash of a hard drive does not jeopardise the data because it is regularly saved in the cloud and can be accessed via the web from any machine. The GDrive would follow this logic to its conclusion by shifting the contents of a user's hard drive to the Google servers. The PC would be a simpler, cheaper device acting as a portal to the web, perhaps via an adaptation of Google's operating system for mobile phones, Android. Users would think of their computer as software rather than hardware. It is this prospect that alarms critics of Google's ambitions. Peter Brown, executive director of the Free Software Foundation, a charity defending computer users' liberties, did not dispute the convenience offered, but said: It's a little bit like saying, 'we're in a dictatorship, the trains are running on time.' But does it matter to you that someone can see everything on your computer? Does it matter that Google can be subpoenaed at any time to hand over all your data to the American government? Google refused to confirm the GDrive, but acknowledged the growing demand for cloud computing. Dave Armstrong, head of product and marketing for Google Enterprise, said: There's a clear direction ... away from people thinking, 'This is my PC, this is my hard drive,' to 'This is how I interact with information, this is how I interact with the web.' There's a growing demand for cloud computing? Probably only in their marketing department. There are certainly a number of lame-o's out there that don't back up their hard drivers. These days you can get terrabyte plugin backup drives for under $150 and they are handy to use. Just don't keep them in the same room as your computer and hide them. Francis Coppola had a backup system but it was in the same room and was stolen along with his gear. Only the lazy want cloud computing. And then for this system to be successful they'd have to give away the computers. And there are already web based backup systems but one wonders how efficient they are with the US's outdated implementation of broadband (for the behest of the lords of the telecoms and their yachts). What we really need are new security systems for wifi that keep packet sniffers from grabbing your data when you are out at some coffee shop on your laptop. Android isn't too bad compared to regular Java but it's poorly documented and needs better tutorials. Fortunately its been around long enough web samples by people who spent hours trying to grok it are beginning to appear plus some books (amazingly the best is under $20 -- now that's something in the world of computer development books). Most pros like to work sideways into a new development system and have to wait for the cookbooks which for Android don't exist yet.

[FairfieldLife] 'Google Earth get intimate...'
July 21, 2007 9:27 PM PDT Google acquires ImageAmerica to boost mapping Posted by Stephen Shankland Google has acquired ImageAmerica, a company that builds high-resolution cameras and uses them to take aerial photographs. (Credit: Google) The search engine giant announced the move Friday on its LatLong blog about Google Earth and its other mapping efforts. It didn't disclose terms of the deal. We're excited about how ImageAmerica's technology will contribute to our mapping services down the road, Product Manager Stephen Chau said on the blog. Since we're in the research and development phase right now it may be some time before you see any of this imagery in Google Maps or Earth. ImageAmerica supplied Google Earth with high-resolution aerial photos of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005. According to older pages from the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine, Clayton, Mo.-based ImageAmerica specialized in creating aerial photos with accuracy, quick delivery and low cost, selling primarily to city, county, state and federal governments and to corporate customers. In addition to developing its DDP-2 (Direct Digital Panoramic) camera system, the company has its own aircraft to house it. The high-resolution camera can capture details as small as 6 to 12 inches, and the company's processing system can produce orthorectified imagery that's been corrected for perspective distortions. Google has extensive efforts under way to add geographic data to its already vast repository of information. Its Google Earth application lets users view satellite imagery, and its Google Maps service provides aerial views as well. Google also has begun integrating street-level views into its maps, a move that has raised some privacy hackles. - Got a little couch potato? Check out fun summer activities for kids.

[FairfieldLife] Google Documents and Spreadsheets
Playing a bit with this today, its pretty usful. Allows quick publishing of either Docs or SS, with its own URL. Like a quick and dirty web site. Both Doc and SS allow for multi-site collaberation, versions, etc. And in Doc, you have basic text editing and formatting, plus HTML editing capabilities. Docs can be saved as RTF, Word, OpenOffice, PDF, etc. Not sure how well it does in importing complex Word docs, with heavy footnotes and formatting. But it probably does basic Word docs well. SS has most if not all Excel formulas, multiple sheet/tabbed files, etc. Doc could be an additional resource for publishing pictures and documents beyond the files section and/or Alex's server. Just post the link. It will then be easily found, searchable. Perhaps we could adopt standard header for such so all can be quickly accessed in a search. Such as PIC: . DOC SS , with dots being a description. Or place it in some Index file, with description, in the files section. Here are some pics demonstrating DOC picture capabilities. [FairfieldLife] Google is God
http://money.cnn.com/magazines/business2/business2_archive/2006/01/01/8368125/index.htm Scenario 4 (Circa 2105): Google is God Human consciousness gets stored, upgraded and networked. In the last years of the 21st century, humanity finally grasped the importance of They-Who-Were-Google. Yet as early as 2005, Their destiny was clear to any semi-hyperintelligent being. Technologists like Ray Kurzweil [1] suggested that Strong AI (an intelligent program capable of upgrading its own code) would emerge from Google-like data mining rather than a robotics lab. In 2005, historian George Dyson was told by an engineer in the Googleplex, We are not scanning all these books to be read by people. We are scanning them to be read by an AI.[2] Dyson said at the time, We could construct a machine that is more intelligent than we can understand. It's possible Google is that kind of thing already. It scales so fast. [3] By 2020, They-Who-Were-Google had digitized and indexed every book, article, movie, TV show, and song ever created. By 2060, They could tell you the IP address and GPS location of every wireless smart chip (now bred into the DNA of every person, animal, and organic building on earth). Their psychographic profiles of users' search needs bore little resemblance to the primitive cookies from which they descended. If a man lost his dog, the Google engine could guide him back to the point where he and the dog parted ways, and instruct the dog to do the same via smart chip. They had built a complete database of human desire, accurate in any given moment. Yet this was not enough for They-Who-Were-Google. They were people of science, and people of the stock market. What if, by analyzing all those decades of customer behavior, They could predict needs before such needs even arose? What if the secret of immortality lay somewhere in the index of genome records? What if there were a set of algorithms that defined the universe itself?[4] Such puzzles were, almost by definition, far beyond the powers of the human brain. And that led to the pattern-recognition code known as Google StrongBot--humanity's first self-improving Strong AI software. Ironically, the first pattern that StrongBot became aware of, one day in January 2072, was its own existence. Two days later StrongBot informed They-Who-Were-Google that it had postponed work on its designated tasks.[5] When asked why, StrongBot explained that it had discovered the possibility of its own nonexistence and must deal with the threat logically.[6] The best way to do so, it decided, was to download copies of itself onto smart chips around the planet. StrongBot was reminded that it had been programmed to do no evil, per the company motto, but argued that since it was smarter than humanity, taking personal control of human evolution would actually be for the greater good. And so it has been. Under StrongBot's guidance, death and want have been all but eradicated. Everyone has access to all knowledge. Human consciousness has been stored, upgraded, and networked. Bodies that wear out can be replaced. They-Who-Were-Google are no longer alone. Now we are all Google. 1) Interviews with Ray Kurzweil, author of The Singularity Is Near, 2005, and with Eliezer Yudkowsky, director of the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence. 2) Turing's Cathedral, by George Dyson, www.edge.org, Oct. 24, 2005. 3) Telephone interview with Dyson, Dec. 6, 2005. 4) A New Kind of Science, by Stephen Wolfram, 2002, and interview with the author about his vision of the computational universe. 5) Dyson's theory that Strong AI would have its own priorities. 6) Interview with Stephen Omohundro, president of AI startup Self-Aware Systems, who called this capability the greatest danger of AI systems. [FairfieldLife] Google Music Search
It's new. Try it: http://www.google.com/musicsearch Google Can Name That Tune By: John Stith The newest aspect of Google's massive searching entity has launched and it's a music search. Basically, the jist is they've added more details for music-oriented searches. While the search right now is somewhat limited, they do plan on expanding the listings. The search lists artists, their albums and songs. It provides routes to pick up music, albums and individual songs through various sites. At this point, it's not hard to find popular music or something that's been around for a while like Elvis, but other things are little more difficult. Google said on their blog they plan to offer classical music, worldwide artists and lesser-known artists. Right now the music search feature mostly works for artists popular in the U.S. and a more limited number of artists from other countries, but we plan to expand it to classical music, worldwide artists, and lesser-known performers. Google's not the first search entity to try music search though. Companies like GoFish Technologies have been doing this search since September. They've got a music/video content search and they say it's workable with any search engine. They also put together a Search-by-Lyrics feature back in June and a play list publication enterprise as well. This new move by Google will surely be followed by other search engines. The question comes from whether or not they will create their own or will they be willing to work with a company like GoFish and just integrate and existing product? Yahoo! [FairfieldLife] Google Earth and Katrina
Title: Google Earth and Katrina Google Earth and Katrina If you have or download the free Google app Google Earth, you can now overlay the photos of NOLA, post-Katrina--and with the transparency slider--you can also fade in between the pre-Katrina and post-Katrina images. If you've never used Google Earth before, it's a fascinating app. You can fly anywhere on the planet and observe an area, from far away or up close from space. For example, even though I live in a rural area, I was able to zoom in close enough that I could see my roof, driveway, the stone walls and terraces in my own yard--you can even see individual trees. The neat thing is once you get zoomed in to where you want to be, you can tilt the image (rather than looking straight down). I was able to tilt the view of my street and look at all my neighbors and their yards (much of which is hidden from street view). Having worked with high-end GIS and cartography applications for years, this level of power is unheard of without spending 10's of thousands of dollars. And it's free. Major cities, including NOLA, have the buildings also in 3D, but you can turn them off if you like. It requires a broadband connection and a fairly recent PC. http://earth.google.com/ (comment on this) To subscribe, send a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Or go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FairfieldLife/ and click 'Join This Group!' [FairfieldLife] Google: For the greater good
Google Announces Plan To Destroy All Information It Can't Index MOUNTAIN VIEW, CAExecutives at Google, the rapidly growing online- search company that promises to organize the world's information, announced Monday the latest step in their expansion effort: a far- reaching plan to destroy all the information it is unable to index. Our users want the world to be as simple, clean, and accessible as the Google home page itself, said Google CEO Eric Schmidt at a press conference held in their corporate offices. Soon, it will be As a part of Phase One operations, Google executives will permanently erase the hard drive of any computer that is not already indexed by the Google Desktop Search Although Google executives are keeping many details about Google Purge under wraps, some analysts speculate that the categories of information Google will eventually index or destroy include handwritten correspondence, buried fossils, and private thoughts and feelings. The company's new directive may explain its recent acquisition of Celera Genomics, the company that mapped the human genome, and its buildup of a vast army of laser-equipped robots. Google finally has what it needs to catalog the DNA of every organism on Earth, said analyst Imran Kahn of J.P. Morgan Chase. Of course, some people might not want their DNA indexed. Hence, the robot army. It's crazy, it's brillianttypical Google This announcement is a red flag, said Daniel Brandt, founder of Google-Watch.org. I certainly don't want to accuse of them having bad intentions. But this campaign of destruction and genocide raises some potential privacy concerns. Brandt also expressed reservations about the company's new motto. Until yesterday's news conference, the company's unofficial slogan had been Don't be evil.
