No. :) Unfortunately I don't have one of those California Hall
posters. That concert didn't go so well as there was not good
attendance and was the only time we played in California. However the
following Monday I visited the Columbia Records offices in San Francisco
where we were offered a good contract if we could get out the contract
with the jerk who screwed a lot of northwest bands including the
Kingsmen who recorded "Louie, Louie." I also did a radio interview with
Tom Donahue on KMPX (I think those were the call letters) that night.

We did a lot of concerts with the Youngbloods. At the Yardbirds
concert in Richmond, BC the backdrop caught fire while the Family Tree
was playing. Fortunately they got it under control. I don't actually
see the Magic Fern on the 1979 poster and I was still living in Seattle
at the time, actively playing music so I would have probably been
contacted for a band reunion.

Earlier in the summer we played a Trips Festival at the Seattle Center
and only found out a few years ago that offstage incognito Mick Jagger
was watching. At another festival later that summer at the Montlake
Aquatheater we were introduced by Sonny and Cher who emceed the show.

Also we rented an old mansion on Queen Anne Hill as the band house and
many folks including the Grateful Dead came to visit. If you've seen
the Elvis Seattle World's Fair movie the scene of the fairgrounds and
Space Needle was taken from the balcony of the house. We got the
mansion because the owner wanted to tear it down and put a condo there.
He figured letting a rock group rent it would get the neighbors up in
arms and he could get his condo. He did. :)

Though the rock group I had in 1967 toured for a week with the
Buffalo
Springfield I didn't get to know Neil that much because he was
kind of
the quiet one in the group and he was also have a little problem
with
his epilepsy flaring up during the tour. Nice guy though, he
came out

one evening when we played a little extra so that Richie Furay could
gain some strength (he had the flu) and raved about our band to the
audience and that we probably become very famous (we didn't).

What was your band. Ever cut an album?

The "Magic Fern", a Seattle group.

Did you know your posters were selling for over 3000 USD on wolfgangs

The "Magic Fern", a Seattle group. We did some recordings and there was
an album released some years after the band broke up (which took place
in 1968). However these were rushed studio recordings which were demos
to sell the group to other record companies. Some of our more
innovative work was not on that album. Our signature piece was a long
almost 8 to 10 minute modal blues which when the Springfield heard it
decided to try the same thing in their next set. :)

I never got around to renting the DVD but this was a real treat and a
fine film by Jonathan Demme. Neil definitely has a very interesting
style of composition that stood out from the rest of the Buffalo
Springfield compositions and probably the basis for much of the
harmonies used by CSN&Y. It's like he's more of a poet painting scenes
with kinesthetic images and setting them to music with a broad
pastoral

brush of deferent harmonic devices not usually found in blues or rock
but in symphonic and jazz works. Sounded great on my Klipsch speakers.

I actually just watched that last night. What an excellent concert!
This was right after Neil had been operated on for a cerebral
aneurism. It really caused him to rethink his life and write some
great songs, as he wasn't sure if he'd live or die. Those songs make
up the first half of the concert set. It was also cool to see Grant
Boatright (the guy who looks like Custer) and some of his old friends
all together.

Wandering down to the lakefront, Graham discovered
that Neil Young had set up one set of huge concert-
style loudspeakers in one wall of the house, and
another set in the barn. There was music booming
through the speakers and Neil was out in the middle
of the lake on a little floating platform there,
shouting back to the sound technicians through a
bullhorn as they tried to get the right stereo
balance out of the system, "More barn!" :-)

I met a private pilot the other day who has flown lots of rock stars. Kiss,
Aerosmith, Moody Blues, Whitney Houston, etc. These days he’s flying Arab
Shieks around Europe, and living in FF during his down time. He once flew
Neil Young from Chicago to Santa Fe, along with Neil’s son who’s a
quadaplegic. He said he earned Neil’s respect by being aware that he was a
model train buff, a hobby he had picked up because it was something he could
do with his son. Neil has built an elaborate model train set in his
basement, and his son can control the trains by sucking or blowing on a
straw-like device, similar to that which controls some wheelchairs.

Congrats on your new abode. Let's hope Sue Nami doesn't pay a visit.

If you get around to unpacking and setting up your HD set instead of
watching sex on the beach then here are a couple interesting little
films to look for:

"Confess" which is about a guy who uses guerrilla video posted online to
fall people. This script was written in 1999 way before YouTube was
around and the director laments he didn't just take the web site idea
and implement. Of course YouTube was simply spun out of the fact that
Adobe Flash available on most computers for free and that broadband is
more prevalent. This film also stars Ali Larter (Heroes) who did the
small film because she was interested in doing more independent film
projects.

"Unholy" with Adrienne Barbeau which is sort of a trippy horror film
about supernatural Nazi technology that the US developed after the war.
I was kind of interested where the film makers got the idea but so far
the commentary shows that they just wrote what they thought was a wild
and crazy film and even joke to the audience if the can figure out what
it means to contact them because they don't know what it means. :)

Showtime showed the Neil Young "Heart of Gold" movie last night in HD.
I never got around to renting the DVD but this was a real treat and a

And also Happy Birthday FFL!

So many "good ideas" rise and fall quickly on the Web. You must be
doing something right to keep this rolling this long. Thanks Rick.

I don’t feel like I’ve done much, except perhaps set an “anything goes” sort
of tone. If FFL is successful, it’s because of the caliber of its
participants.
