Re: my two newest rescues
Jenn, I'm so glad at least someone is eating. I'm betting they both are. It sounds like they're starting to understand just how lucky they are to have found themselves in your care. I'm no good at talking anyone out of keeping just one more, (or two for that matter!). There's something so special about the bond that forms between a caregiver and an animal in desperate need. They are often so grateful to have a safe environment to lay their heads and knead their biscuits. My Kimba Cat was in the same devastated condition when I trapped him, (he was a stray turned feral that I'd been trying to catch for a couple of years, but he was just too wily). I got him neutered, got rid of the earmites, put Revolution on him, cut off the massive matts and cleaned him up as best I could, (he had a flea allergy and the poor thing had lost most of his hair on his back and tail, when you rubbed his back you could feel all the little scabs and your hand would come up black like you'd been reading a newspaper too long). A couple of days after I released him, he started to warm up to me and would let me pet him when I put out food for the ferals. After not too long a time, he decided that he didn't want to live on the street anymore and my house seemed mighty inviting to him. You know how some cats bolt the front door to get out when you open it? Well, Kimba started doing that to get in! With barking dogs and all, I'd have to squeeze in the front door to keep him out, he was relentless. This is the same cat that when I initially tried to confine him in my garage, he dug through the wire mesh and cement of one of the air vents and escaped! (That was a lesson in just how far a cat will go to get free). I finally gave in and let him join the household as a foster. You folks may remember my looking for a home for him. Well, he found one, mine! Nina [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Guess what?! When I just checked on them, the plate of soft food I had left was GONE! At least one of the ATE! Whoo-hooo! I'm going to put another plate of food in there before I go to bed, I don't want to give them too much after not eating for days, I'd hate for them to over-do it and puke up everything they ate. Thanks for the suggestion of giving them privacy! It really worked! I thought it would have been mean to close them in the closet with no way to see out, but I guess they wanted the security. Jenn ~~~ Well, they have been fed. They actually didn't do too bad, really, once they realized it tasted good. I'm not used to Persian faces though, and it took me a few minutes to realize that you can't force the mouth open from the side like in most cats because they have weird shaped jaws, however, their bottom teeth stick out more than the top (an overbite?) and if you just put the syringe in the front, and pull slightly down on the bottom teeth, they open right up. After the first little bit, they would just lick it up if I just squeezed it out right on their upper lip. Persians can't lick their bottom jaw, I don't think, at least these two seem to not be able to, but they can lick over the top of their nose. LOL, cute little gremlins! After I got 9 CC's each of a California Natural canned cat food, Nutri-Cal, and water mix down them, they seemed to perk up a bit. I let it go at just that little bit for now, and of course left some free-choice. I closed off the livingroom, and gave them about 5 minutes of check it out time, and they were walking around and being a bit more lively. I was petting Spirit after I fed him, and after just a few minutes of me reassuring him, he began to snuggle up and really get into it. He even came to me to be petted more after he explored a few minutes. I've got them back in isolation now, and I covered the glass with a sheet, so they can have some privacy. Maybe they will realize they are hungry now that they got a bit more relaxed. I'm really worried about the rescue taking them now, what IF they turn out to be FELV or FIV+? I'm going to have to ask the rescue if they keep FELV+ cats, because if they might be euthanised, I'd hate to give them to that rescue. I wish I had enough money to get them tested before the rescue arranges transport! (All I need is ANY excuse to allow myself permission to keep Spirit, and I would! He's really growing on me.) Re: Kyle, how's Brissle tonight?
Well Brissle is doing about the same. She has enough energy to get around. Still barely eating, if at all yesterday. I think today I will focus more on food than on Transfer Factor, like I was doing yesterday. It's just so hard to medicate her and syringe feeding is about the same as medicating. I only get two or three of those a day. So I think the food is going to be more important. At this point, it will be about 3 1/2 days since her depomedrol injection. So I'm not very optimistic. I've just been making the most out of the past few days, spending alot of quality time with her. Thanks. -Kyle - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Saturday, April 30, 2005 10:20 PM Subject: Kyle, how's Brissle tonight? Thinking about her...Michelle
Re: Update on Grace
Nina, That's great news that Grace checked out okay! I know you must have been worried. It's funny, sometimes Brissle gets stressed out going to the vet. While other times, she just sits there and purrs. That doesn't happen at the internist's though. She really hates going there and starts shedding real bad. -Kyle - Original Message - From: Nina [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Monday, May 02, 2005 2:06 AM Subject: Update on Grace Hi Everyone, Well I took Grace to see my Internist yesterday. Of course, her pupils had gone back to normal by then! She got an exam from two different Internists actually. They both reiterated that the separate dilation/contraction pupil symptom is not uncommon in FelV kitties. Grace got a good report as far as her over-all health goes. She does still have a heart mummer. They first heard it when she was about 6 mos old. I was optimistically hoping it had somehow resolved itself, but alas, no. The last time I took her in was with Gypsy. What an ordeal that was, (the blood letting incident). I didn't even let the vets examine Grace that time. She was so stressed out, open mouthed panting, hiding in the back of the carrier etc. All I kept thinking was, FelV kitties are NOT supposed to be put under stress! She was such a good girl this time, she even purred for the vets! My attitude has such an effect on my babies. I have to train myself to stay calm somehow. Just another little aside... My little imp Gypsy, (interesting the way my adjectives and nicknames have taken a decidedly different tone since she's feeling better enough to be naughty!), must be very in tune with me. Whenever I get ready to give her her meds she disappears as if she knows what's coming. I've been trying to think of something else while I prepare the syringe. Bruce suggested visualizing birds. It's kind of hard to keep my mind on sparrows while I'm mixing and measuring, but you know what? It's working! Maybe I'm more of an AC than I give myself credit for! Nina

Re: Kyle, how's Brissle tonight?
Kyle, something you may want to consider is a feeding tube. I considered it with Simon but was able to get him eating on his own again. They insert them under light anesthesia, I think they are called e-tubes, and apparently they really do not bother the cats. You can easily get full nutrition into her that way. I have been averse to them myself, but I keep being told that cats do not mind them and do not mind being fed through them and feel better with the food. If the depo is not working, it is still possible that dex would help. But I really have no idea how much steroids even help with what Brissle has. Re: my two newest rescues
Well, I SAW the gray one eating last night, so just to be safe, I force fed the black one this morning again. I spoke to the lady at the rescue that is going to take them (If we can find some one is Massachusetts who can help with transport) last night and she seems very nice. She said she places FELV+ and FIV+ cats too, so their lack of testing is not a limiting factor for them being placed through her rescue. So that's really good. Now it's just a matter of me finding them a ride through western and central MA. to the eastern coast. Jenn ~~~Jenn,I'm so glad at least someone is eating. I'm betting they both are. Are those the red tubes that they put down their nose and then sew (or staple)them into placeacross their forehead? I've seen that done before, and it LOOKS horrible, but I have to say, it really did not seem to really bother the dog much (but that was a dog, not a cat). Re: OT: Staff take more time off for ill pets than relatives
Recently, I was talking to a fellow cat owner who asked how my two were doing. When I mentioned that the one had died, two days after his 12th birthday, a friend and coworker of mine overheard and went into a tantrum about, "You KNOW HIS BIRTHDAY? That's just about the most riduculous thing I've ever heard! Its an animal...who the hell remembers an animal's birthday" (This is a man who has volunteered THOUSANDS of hours for an artist organization that had recently given his notice of departure because the artists had renigged on the one thing he had asked them to do...support a community event, at no expense to themselves, in order for him to give his time...and he had done this for 7 years.) I was hurt at first...then gathered myself and shot back, "Yes, I remember his birthday. Its not like we celebrated with hats or anything, but I did celebrate the day he was born with a new toy for himThere is nothing wrong with marking the event of birth for something that gives you unconditional love for its entire life and asks only food in return. Its not like I forfitted thousands of hours of my time for a bunch of ungrateful people who refuse to help themselves" His reply. "Point taken." Sometimes, with people who don't understand...you just have to put it in perspective. Meanwhile, the powers that be in the town where I work, recently evicted dozens of people from the project neighborhood to raise the houses and build luxury town houses. Unfortunately, since the residents only had a few weeks notice, when they left, they left their animals...(mostly because many had to move into motels and such, where animals are not allowed). So for the rest of the summer, I will be trying to feed, catch, vet and place as many of these animals as I can, mostly cats. If anyone is in the MD, DE, PA area, and would like to make an addition to their family...or even foster, please let me know...Right now I have no idea of the health condition of these animals...I have pulled both healthy cats and a Felv+ cat from these streets in the past year. (I have no idea where the $$$ will come to do all this...but it has been my experience that homes, food and help will come. Meanwhile I'm going to contact the owner of the land and see if I can get him to put out some money on the grounds that the strays running around will be emotionally trying for any new residents that will be buying his high priced homes. But I'm not holding my breath on that oneperhaps a letter to the newspaper?...or do you think this might draw too many nerdowells? Dog fighting is big around hereI don't want to supply fresh bait if you get my meaning.) Thanks, T "Gloria B. Lane" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: MC - I didn't know that! Re: Kyle, how's Brissle tonight?
NO, those are nasal feeding tubes, which are supposed to be worse. E-tubes are inserted to their stomach and threaded under their skin to come out on the side of the neck. I don't think you can see much, and they are not supposed to be able to feel anything much. Michelle In a message dated 5/2/05 9:31:12 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Are those the red tubes that they put down their nose and then sew (or staple) them into place across their forehead? I've seen that done before, and it LOOKS horrible, but I have to say, it really did not seem to really bother the dog much (but that was a dog, not a cat). Still, I'm not sure I could bear the thought of sewing anything to my cat's head! Jenn

oh, my, that brings up something i rarely think about. buddha, FirstCat, was one of those who would always cock her head to listen to whatever you had to say. she'd done it from the very beginning, so i didn't really even realize how much a part of who she was to me the day after she went to the bridge, maggie, FirstCalico, who was NOT a particularly psychic or empathic cat, was helping me with something, and when i spoke to her, she cocked her head just as buddha always had--i burst into tears, completely losing it. maggie never did it again-- MaryChristineAIM / YAHOO: TenHouseCatsMSN: [EMAIL PROTECTED]ICQ: 289856892

Kerry, The advantage of the AD is that it is "smooth" enough to use for syringe feedings. If you are interested in nutritional analysis, try one of these links. Its not like we celebrated with hats or anything, but I did celebrate the day he was born with a new toy for himThere is nothing wrong with marking t! he event of birth for something that gives you unconditional love for its entire life and asks only food in return. Meanwhile I'm going to contact the owner of the land and see ! if I can get him to put out some money on the grounds that the strays running around will be emotionally trying for any new residents that will be buying his high priced homes. But I'm not holding my breath on that oneperhaps a letter to the newspaper?...or do you think this might draw too many nerdowells? Re: need help - a negative, later positive - ?
Gloria: I'm an old member, but don't get here as often as I'd like... or should.. but heres our experience. We found Lucky, at about 5 weeks old,the result of a "hit and run". She survived the weekend in the ER and the next Monday went to our vet for further evaluation and testing. She tested negative for everything. She was healthy for the next FOUR YEARS until she was infected with Haemobartonella and could not seem to fight it off. The (new) vet retested her and she tested positive for FeLV. She had not been exposed to any other positives, so the vet says she probably had it since birth. She says babies should not be tested that young as the test is unreliable. PS..Lucky is now 6 years old, and is still healthy.. although we are always on guard. Thanks to those who sent healing messages. The vet gave Mikey a thorough physical examination and stool check and found nothing organically wrong with him. He told me that it is typical of the positive condition for a cat to run a high fever from time to time, on the order of a roller coaster effect. The lack of appetite and energy are direct results. He gave him shots of Flocillin and Dypivone, along with Clovamax drops for me to administer for the next 7 days. He directed me to call him in 24 to 36 hours to let him know how Mikey is doing. I am glad that I didn't wait any longer to take him to the vet since he was beginning to become dehydrated and had lost a pound and a half in the past two weeks, which is a lot for a nine pound cat. Mikey
Leah, It may be typical that FelV kitties run temps, but that doesn't mean there isn't something going on besides the FelV status. I don't remember hearing about you Mikey before, (sorry if I missed the threads), how old is he? Has he any other symptoms besides getting sick this time? Do you have him on any immune support supplements? Is it possible he is actually fighting the actual virus and not something else he's caught due to poor immune response? I'm so glad you took him in to the vet, but one thing we've all learned is that you can't take a wait and see approach with these guys. At the first sign of illness, you have to jump on it fast and aggressively. We've talked quite extensively about different ways to help entice a kitty to eat. Let us know if you want some suggestions. I'm sending good thoughts and prayers to you and Mikey for a speedy recovery. Nina Wolf, Leah R. wrote: Thanks to those who sent healing messages. Mikey - Holistic remedies
Leah, I don't know where you're located, but if there is a Whole Foods Market near you, they carry a really good supply of Holistic remedies. I try to use the little sugar tablets instead of the bead type remedies, (sorry, I don't know enough about them to all them by their proper name). The bead type ones (in the blue cylinders), take a long time to melt in water. I haven't really had that much luck with using them, (I tried them for my IBD kitty), but I kind of squeezed the syringe tip gently between teeth and cheek and slowly let it accumulate. The remedies aren't supposed to be swallowed or chewed, they're supposed to melt under your tongue. I know what you mean - I get so nervous from the night or day before the appointment, and can't sleep because I know it's going to stress my babies out so much!! I just had to take one of my very very first feral in US, Hannibal to the vet - I just wrapped him with a huge blanket over him and put him in a carrier - but he did very well - poor baby - he had been urinating with blood - and he was in such a pain and he almost blocked! -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of MacKenzie, Kerry N. Leah, I just did a search for homeopathic remedies by illness and came up with this site. I had a better one, but can't find the darn bookmark. This lists illnesses/maladies alphabetically with the homeopathic treatment so you can better find the one you're looking for. http://elixirs.com/remedy.htm#keynotes Nina Hideyo Yamamoto wrote: And, also, they are not supposed to eat food for 15 mins. RE: Hideyo and Leah CLS - Monday May 2, 2005
Thank you, Kerry - you know me with the spelling - yes I meant Sulphur - Sulphur is such an amazing remedy - I can't begin to express how grateful I am to this remedy - anyway, when the fever is caused by some type of virus and caused by the compromised immune system, and can't get rid of the fever, this remedy has worked really well for many of my cats - different books may suggest different things - I do read them, but this is something that I was directly recommended by my holistic vet who saved many of my cats lives - Sulphur and Silicia, and Pulstilla are something that I always make sure to have enough of them since they are very multi-dimensional as a treatment - Hideyo -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of MacKenzie, Kerry N. Leah, How high is the fever? I am sending healing thoughts your way ;-)) CherieNina [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Leah,It may be "typical" that FelV kitties run temps, but that doesn't mean there isn't something going on besides the FelV status. I don't remember hearing about you Mikey before, (sorry if I missed the threads), how old is he? Has he any other symptoms besides getting sick this time? Do you have him on any immune support supplements? Is it possible he is actually fighting the actual virus and not something else he's caught due to poor immune response? I'm so glad you took him in to the vet, but one thing we've all learned is that you can't take a "wait and see" approach with these guys. At the first sign of illness, you have to jump on it fast and aggressively. We've talked quite extensively about different ways to help entice a kitty to eat. Let us know if you want some suggestions. I'm sending good thoughts and prayers to you and Mikey for a speedy recovery.NinaWolf, Leah R. wrote:Thanks to those who sent healing messages. He directed me to call him in 24 to 36 hours to let him know how Mikey is doing.I am glad that I didn't wait any longer to take him to the vet since he was beginning to become dehydrated and had lost a pound and a half in the past two weeks, which is a lot for a nine pound cat.Leah[EMAIL PROTECTED]-Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED][mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of MacKenzie,Kerry N.Sent: Monday, May 02, 2005 3:25 PMTo: felvtalk@felineleukemia.orgSubject: RE: CLS - Monday May 2, 2005Leah,Sending healing thoughts for little Mikey. RE: Mikey - Holistic remedies
Think the little beads are called pillules - I like homeopathics also - Gloria And, also, they are not supposed to eat food for 15 mins. Prior/after giving the remedy - if you give a dose, and it does not work, you might try the 2nd after 12 hours, and if it doesn't - try the next remedy. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Nina Sent: Monday, May 02, 2005 3:41 PM To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Mikey - Holistic remedies Leah, I don't know where you're located, but if there is a Whole Foods Market near you, they carry a really good supply of Holistic remedies.
