Lisa.

When I read your email about angel Akira, I broke down and sobbed
my heart out.  I don't post much, but I try to keep up on the important
news on the list.  I well remember your first email after joining our
list.  You knew nothing about Feline Leukemia, but you wanted to help
the little kitty you had rescued.  I have followed Akira's progress
ever since the beginning.  I, too, feel like she was partly my kitty
also.

I think wonderful, loving people like you are sent angels in
disguise as I believe Akira was and still is in spirit.  We don't know
why these little creatures have to suffer and ultimately pass on, but I
feel that they touch our lives for a specific reason.  We may not
always understand that reason while they are with us, but I know that
some day in some way you will know the answer of why Akira was sent to
you.  Perhaps she was sent to teach you about Feline Leukemia so that
you could pass on the knowledge that you have gained to others from
loving and caring for Akira.  Only you will find that answer.

I can tell you that Akira touched my heart many times and she will
not be forgotten.  She was so fortunate to have had your forever,
loving home even though it wasn't long enough.  You and Bobby were so
very blessed that Akira passed your way and touched you so deeply while
she was on earth.  She is not gone, she is not forgotten, Akira will
always be with you spiritually and perhaps at some future time, she
will send another precious angel to touch and enrich your life again.

Sending you loving thoughts and prayers.  I hope the following
gives you some solace.

I put the tablet in a #1 empty gel cap (by the box at Walmart Pharmacy)

OT: St. Francis Medallions, was: - Blind Kitten Very Sad

2005-06-14 Thread Brenda K. Smith

Jen..

I think this is a very loving suggestion on your part.  I have been
called St. Francis like many, many times throughout my animal welfare
and rescue life by grateful people and organizations and, although I am
not a Catholic nor an Episcopalion, I always felt highly complimented.
I, personally, think that whatever religion St. Francis was apart of
should not be an issue, but rather the compassionate, loving acts
regarding animals that clearly define him.

I would love to have a St. Francis medallion blessed by your dad in
honor of my dogs Otis and Corey, and my cats Peri, felv+, Lovey, felv+,
Merry, felv+, Rory, Baby Kitty, and my daughter's 17 year old kitty,
Miss Priss.

I'll send you my address privately.  Thank you for offering to do
this.  We have many, many St. Francis like people on this wonderful

Anyhoo...the point of my email!  I've thought about  having my dad bless

And on a related topic, if ever anybody would like a loved one (people

just let me know!  During his mass, he mentions the names of those who

Need advice for FELV+ 6 week old kitten!

2005-07-11 Thread Brenda K. Smith

Hi All..

I have a friend who's mother in Oregon rescued a little boy kitten
who is about 6 weeks old now.  Last week he tested positive for felv on
the in office test.  I don't know if it was the Snap or Elisa.  The
lady, Margaret, said they also sent out a sample to be tested at a
lab.  I believe it was the IFA.  She found out today that it is also
positive.  I asked if they reported that it was replicating in his bone
marrow and she asked the vet's office.  The person said they thought
that in order for it to be positive on the IFA that it would indicate
it was replicating in the bone marrow.  Is that true?

When Margaret's daughter called to ask advice, I told her that a
kitten may test positive from the mother cat's antibodies and that the
kitten could possibly throw off the virus with good care, human grade
food, stress level kept down and Interferon if the kitten is old enough
to take it.  I recommended Wellness kitten food and Margaret purchased
both dry and canned Wellness.  Margaret's vet upon seeing the positive
test recommended euthanasia immediately.  Margaret said absolutely
not!  She said they had already fallen in love with him and he was
energetic showing no signs of illness.  I know this lady very well
having taught her and her daughter almost 15 years ago how to bottle
raise 5 orphan kittens.  She will do whatever is necessary to keep this
kitten healthy and loved.

Here are the questions for which I need answers:

    1) Can a 6 week old kitten be on Interferon?  I recommended the
newest protocol (which I use) of daily Interferon.  I use 1 ml daily
for my adult cats.  What would the dose be for a 2-3 lb. (I think)
kitten?

    2)  If the kitten is positive with the IFA and/or is replicating in
his bone marrow, will he remain persistently positive or can he throw
if off?

    3)  Also, if replicating in bone marrow if/when should he be tested
again?

    4)  What other supplements would be recommended?  Vit C?  What dose
for a kitten?  L-Lysine?  What dose for kitten?

If any of you have any other recommendations, please feel free to
mention them.  I will be calling Margaret tonight or tomorrow to read
some of your answers.  I will also be printing them out and mailing
them to her.  Margaret is in her early 70's and I don't know whether
she has a computer.

I really appreciate any advice you all might have for this
cat/kitten loving lady.  All of my experience with felv+ with my cats
have been as adults.  I have never had a tiny positive kitten.  I know
I could go to the archives, but I still have dial up and limited
internet time so I'm hoping you all don't mind repeating advice for
Margaret.

    Thank you so much.

Gloria.

I thought I read on here, though, that a kitten this young could be
showing antibodies to felv from his mother??  I'm just trying to find
out if being positive on both the Elisa, Snap and IFA at 5 weeks old
(when tests were given) is proof positive that he will always be
positive or throw it off even if it is in his bone marrow.

Thanks for replying.  I don't know if the test was light or strong
positive.  I haven't called Margaret yet as so far I have only received
your reply and Hideyos.  I hope to receive more replies that answers my
specific questions on my first email.  I think Interferon is that way
to go if 6 weeks is not too young.  I also think Vitamin C is a good
idea.

    Thanks, Gloria.

could still throw the virus off, as you said. He should be tested

Interferon.   Re Vit C, Dr. Belfield has a reputation for Vit C, and

Re when to retest, I don't recall - seems like it's 90 days... Again,
was it a light positive or a strong positive?

Re: Deirdre interferon - advice needed

2005-07-25 Thread Brenda K. Smith

Kathy.

I have three positive cats on the human (Alpha A) Interferon.  I
give 1 ml daily which is the newest protocol as far as I know.  The
research found that Interferon does not stay in the body long and by
using 7 days on and then 7 days off, the effects are being negated on
the 7 days off, hence the daily dose of Interferon.  I have been using
the daily dosage for three years with my Peri.  He is at least 9-1/2
years old (I've had him for 7-1/2 years) and has absolutely no symptoms
of FELV.  I adopted two more Felv+ cats from the Athens, GA area, where
they still use gas chambers to put to sleep at their shelters, last
February and have them both on a daily dose.  I would HIGHLY recommend
the daily dose of 30 units which equals 1 ml daily.  Keep it
refrigerated and squirt toward the back of the throat slowly.  It is
absorbed through the mucous membranes at the back of the throat.

I get my Interferon from Island Pharmacy.  They are based in
Wisconsin about 90 miles from me.  In winter I pay $40.00 for 100 ml
and $7 or $8 for shipping since I get it next day or in 2 days with
cold packs.  When I have my vet write for all three cats, then I get
300 ml for $44.00.  When the pharmacy can mix more of the Interferon in
the batch it costs less, but you have to have the prescription in all
three names.  I had to just reorder for my three and even though they
are close to me because it has been so hot, I had to pay for overnight
shipping which was $18 something I think.  If I were you I would ask
your vet to write a script for 100 ml at a time and give it 1 ml every
day.  Unless I read new research that suggests giving daily is not the
protocol to use, I will continue to do so.  Right now my three are
healthy, happy and act like normal wonderful cats.  Peri is at least
9-1/2 years, Lovey is about 1-1/2 years and Merry is around 2 years.

My very best to you and Deirdre.  I hope she has many, many
wonderful years with you. :)

The interferon itself only cost $28, but the shipping was $22.

After 4 days on it, her lymph nodes under her chin have gotten much
smaller. They've been enlarged since a month ago when she had a cold.
I was amazed that there was an improvement so quickly.

My vet and I are unsure whether to do the "7 days on 7 days off"
routine with the interferon or just give her 1 ml a day forever. What
are you folks doing? What do you think works best? And is everyone
giving 1ml/daily?

Tater Tot Update - Response - LONG!

2005-08-12 Thread Brenda K. Smith

Julie.

I don't post much, but try to follow along as much as I can.  I
wanted to tell you a story about my Ticker kitty a few years ago.

When she was about 12 years old, one evening I realized that she
had been very quiet and lethargic all day.  I believe I checked her
temp and it was high.  I call my vet the next morning and took her in
as I felt her condition was an emergency.  My vet had been called away
and saw a vet I had never seen before.  Anyway, after examination the
vet felt it was pancreatitis even though rare in cats.  She had heard
of me from my vet so being a former vet tech I was able to take her
home with a couple of injectable medications and lactated ringers.  I
was to contact that vet if she didn't show improvement in a couple of
days.

Ticker continued to get worse and I was getting frantic.  I called
a vet 70 miles from me who I knew and trusted and took Ticker to him.
He did all kinds of tests and couldn't really come up with a
diagnosis.  He asked if he could call in a specialist and I said yes.
The specialist examined her and removed quite a good deal of a fluid
from her abdomen that was thick and stringy.  He was positive she had
FIP and asked if he could send in a Titer test.  He also asked if any
new cat had joined our family recently, which was Rory, and had me
bring him in for a Titer test.  Meanwhile, they put Ticker on
Prednisone and Amoxicillin.  She hadn't eaten for a few days and I
wasn't sure she would make it.  She was a very sick cat by then.

I was just devastated to think that my beautiful Maine Coon look a
like who I had raised from hours old, first tube feeding her for 3 days
and then bottle feeding her until she was 6 months old.  Ticker loved
her baba. :)  Anyway, the specialist called me in a couple of days and
said the titer for both cats was in the proper range, but he still felt
that she had FIP.  After another day or two the vet called and said
Ticker had improved and was eating and I could bring her home.  I raced
up there.  I could hardly wait to see her.  They let me go back to the
kennel area and as soon as Ticker saw me she started chirping. :)  I
brought her home to let her live as long as she had left.  I had to
isolate her in a room so that my other cats didn't catch it.  The
specialist said to continue with the pred and amoxi and give her
anything she wanted to eat so that she would eat.  I made boiled
chicken, etc. and she loved it all.

The next week the specialist called and wanted to know how Ticker
was doing.  I told him she was doing great, eating good, chirping,
purring and grooming herself.  He said to keep doing what I was doing
and maybe we could keep her around for 3 or 4 months more.  He was
about to hang up when I thought of something.  I told him that for the
first time in her life Ticker had perfectly well-formed normal stools.
I went on to explain that Ticker had intermittent loose stools with a
small amount of blood on it all of her life and had her stool and her
checked many times to no avail.

Apparently, a light bulb went off in the specialist's mind and he
said, "oh my goodness, she very likely is suffering from IBD."  I
asked him what caused the thick, stringy fluid in her abdomen and he
had no idea.  He wanted to do expoloratory surgery on Ticker, but I
said no thank you that I would manage her care rather than put her
through a surgery that might not even diagnose what was causing the
IBD..

I kept up with the pred the rest of her life using the lowest dose
possible, along with an allergy diet from Dr. Pitcairn using lamb and
rice with Booda Mix (similar to metamucil, but for cats) and she lived
over 6-1/2 more years until I had to help her go on to the Bridge when
she was 18 years and 7 months.

I'm sorry this is so long, but I thought Ticker's story was appropo
with what is going on with Tater Tot.  Has TT ever had any intermitent
stool problems, vomiting occasionally, etc.?  Also, it just shows also
that even a vet specialist doesn't have all the answers.

If you have never checked out my cheqnet site below, you can see a
picture of my beautiful, wonderful Ticky there.

It's interesting that you bring that up; I'm about 1.5 hours away from a large specialty hospital in Rhode Island.  I took Brownie there to see the veterinary opthamologist and I was  quite impressed.  The do have internists there and I believe they also have a CAT scan and I wonder if that would give us more information without the dangers of an exploratory.  I've been thinking about it for the last couple of hours and I'm going to bring it up when I pick up Tater in the morning.  You're right; it's very confusing

Metronidazole, George's Aloe Vera (1/2 water, 1/2 Aloe) and Antirobe.
It took several months, but it worked for over the last year of his

Thank You All!!!!!

2006-03-02 Thread Brenda K. Smith

Dearest All,

You have all had such wonderful things to say about my mom, THANK
YOU!!! She loved all of you. She used to talk about all of you at
different times. When I first moved back home in 2000, I would come
downstairs and find her sitting here crying. I would be worried and ask
her what was wrong and she would say "We lost another of our beloved
kitty babies". She loved everyone of your babies as though they were
her own.

This battle with her health started at the end of July. She had had a
cold. In August she went into Atrial Fibrillation and she had to be
shocked back into rhythm. She had about a week of feeling better and
then started feeling bad again. She went in and out of rhythm until we
went again between Christmas and New Years to have her shocked again. We
thought so many things, too much immune suppressant drugs making her
sick, new drugs they gave her she was allergic too, I racked my brain
trying to figure it out. She was very sick, throwing up, lost 22lbs,
nothing tasted right or very good at all...I could go on and on.

Little did we know until Saturday the 25th of February that mother had
been suffering with the hideous melanoma brain cancer disease. She
never knew, thankfully and she went very fast, but I was able to tell
her and she acknowledged, that I loved her, dad loved her, and I would
take care of all her babies and daddy. During this time we spent
practically every minute together. I cooked, cleaned, served, her and
tried to absolutely everything I could to make her day better and
happy. We had a connection unlike most have ever seen or experienced.
I lived and breathed for her. We talked about everything in the world
and all aspects of what she would want in case of her death. I feel
like part of me is missing, but I smile knowing she now is no longer
miserable. My beautiful mother gave me so much! My father and I have
so many good memories, we are cherishing them all.

If at anytime you have questions that I can help you with about the
feline leukemia cats, I will try, but I am not my mom, though she taught
me a lot. I believe, I will be handling the fund, so if anyone wants to
send something as a memorial for my mom it will be used for the feline
leukemia fund as she would have wanted.

I would love any of you that have the poems she wrote for your pets to
email them at anytime. I will post the one she wrote for me when I had
my 16th birthday at a future date.

Thank you to all of you for loving my mom and sharing yourselves and
your babies with her, Love Janine

Hi Marissa,
I am sorry for your loss. I have been caring for my 18 year old girl
Miss Priss. She needs fluids everyday and she has diariah everyday.
She is only living off of about 20% or less of her kidneys. I never
thought my mother would be gone before her :( I am going to try to catch
up a little and learn who you all are I remember a lot of names Chris
and Tonya and a few others.

Too all of you who helped with Lovey and Merry, THANK YOU SO MUCH
They are what keep me going. They add so much brightness to everyday.
Lovey and I had a bond the moment we met and Mother with Merry. They
and the other cats are all I could think about when I was coming home,
just grabbing them up and holding them. They will always have a home
the way mom would have wanted. I love them a lot. I will do my best to
stay in touch, Thank you all, Janine

Perry is 11 years old!!!!

2006-04-10 Thread Brenda K. Smith

Dear Kerry,
My mother was Brenda Smith, I am Janine Smith, and she would have
wanted me to write to you for this cause.  We have THREE cats with
FelV.  Peridot is a beautiful orange tabby and he came to us over 7
years ago and he was around four the vet thought.  He is now at
least 11 years old and is as healthy as any other cat.  He has
had no symptoms.

We also rescued Lovey and Merry from Georgia in February last year and
they are at least over 2 years old and they are both healthy  without
any symptoms.  They all interact with our other three cats without any
problem.  My non-FelV cats receive their shots each year, all of them
get a dose of L-lysine daily and the three FelV cats receive Interferon
daily.

I expect all of them to live a nice long healthy life.  My mother once
told me, she had read somewhere that once a FelV cat has reached 2-3
years of age without showing symptoms they are a carrier, but usually
will be unsymptomatic.  I hope this helps and the shelter can help a
lot more of our feline friends.

you along with others to your aol address and I keep getting it back
'undeliverable'. ?? I'm sending this to the list to be sure you see
it. I forwarded it to you the second time because the first time it
came back to me. Even the forward came back to me, but sounds like you

Nina and All

James was right at least in my case.  I have a spam program and 6
messages were hung up in there.  I had added the new felvtalk address
to my "Approve From", but I forgot to add it to the "Approve To" list.
I was able to get Terrie's, Nina's, James and some others because at
one time or other they got caught in my spam program and I approved
them before.

So, I am now getting all the messages and since James changed to
hosting felvtalk I can see my own emails now.  Yay!

Anyway, James asked me to email and let you all know so that if you
do have a spam or firewall program you might want to check it.

Hi All.

Just wanted to make sure you all knew that the entire transport of
Lovey from GA to WI to my home has been completed.  Yippee!  Still
awaiting word to see if Merry is also going to be ours and join the
transport.

Thank you all so much.  We all keep saying that this group of
people are the very best and this just proves it again.  I really feel
that most people who love their cats and dogs are the most wonderful,
giving people in the world.

Thank you all again.  I will be forever grateful.  Oh yeah, I'll
get to meet Barb too! :)

This woman called rescue yesterday at 5 AM demanding a husky or a mal. She
said she needed a dog small enough to put in the trunk of her car because that
is how she transported them. Then when she found out that an application form
would have to be filled out, she cursed and carried on and said that she does
not do that sort of thing. She called the rescue several times during the
morning each time getting more belligerent. Needless to say there is no way on
this earth that she should have any kind of animal. If she contacts any breeders
or rescues, send her packing.
Please crosspost this to any rescues you can think of.
Thanks, Peg

OT Humor: We're Having A Puppy!

2005-02-15 Thread Brenda K. Smith
Hi All.
A rescuer sent me this. Thought all you rescuers would get it. :)
Anyone involved in rescue should be able to see the humor in this
RESCUE HELP NEEDED ASAP:
Please help After two long years of being on a waiting
list for an agility dog, we have been notified by the
breeder that, at long last, our number has come up and ...WE
ARE HAVING A PUPPY!!!

We must IMMEDIATELY get rid of our children now, because we
just KNOW how time consuming our new little puppy is going
to be! Since our little puppy will be arriving on Monday we
MUST place the children in new homes this weekend!

They are described as:
One male - His name is Ryan, Caucasian (English/Irish mix),
light blonde hair, blue eyes. Four years old. Excellent
disposition. He doesn't bite. Temperament tested. Does have
problems with peeing directly in the toilet. Has had chicken
Pox and is current on all shots. Tonsils have already been
removed. Ryan eats everything, is very clean, house trained
& gets along well with others. Does not run with scissors
and with a little training he should be able to read soon.

One female - Her name is Lexie, Caucasian (English/Irish
mix), strawberry blonde hair, green eyes quite freckled. Two
years old. Can be surly at times. Non-biter, thumb sucker.
Has been temperament tested but needs a little attitude
adjusting occasionally. She is current on all shots, tonsils
out, and is very healthy & happy (mostly). Gets along well
with other little girls & little boys but does not like to
share her toys and therefore would do best in a one child
household. She is a very quick learner and is currently
working on her house training-shouldn't take long at all.

We really do LOVE our children so much and want to do what's
right for them; that is why we contacted a rescue group. But
we simply can no longer keep them. Also, we are afraid that
they may hurt our new puppy. I hope you understand that ours
is a UNIQUE situation and we have a real emergency here!!!
They MUST be placed into your rescue by Sunday night at the
latest or we will be forced to drop them offat the orphanage
or along some dark, country road. Our priority now has to be
our new puppy.

Hi All.

Just wanted to let everybody know that my daughter and I will be
leaving tomorrow late morning for Minneapolis.  I have to have an
angiogram Thursday morning related to being a heart transplant
patient.  I know I don't write much, but with all this going on with
the transport of Lovey and Merry from GA I thought if I suddenly wasn't
on for a day or so that somebody might start to worry. :)  I will check
my email before I leave tomorrow and baring no complications I'll be
home Thursday evening to check the list.

    Take care everybody.

:) I knew I had to send it on.  It is so true.  I know most of us
on this list have dealt with stupid people trying to rid of their dogs
or cats for the same reasons.  I especially like the ones I hear or
read about that can't take their dog/cat to another state where they
are moving.  I'm still trying to find that state that doesn't allow
dogs and cats. :(

OT: I'M BACK!

2005-02-17 Thread Brenda K. Smith

Hi All.

Got back tonight very tired and sore.  Neither my daughter nor
myself sleep well in hotels so we were tired.

Good news!  The doctor who was doing my angiogram (who has done it
many times through the years) was saying wow - beautiful, just what I
want to see - perfect, etc. while doing the procedure. :)  He said that
the results were about the same as two years ago or maybe even better.
Then he said, "It's been 13-1/2 years right?"  I said yes.  He put two
thumbs up and said, "You've got it made!"  Just what I want to hear.
:)

For those of you who have some medical background, there is a
slight thickening of the left side of my left ventricle, but it is no
worse than two years ago.  It's not an unusual occurence for a heart
transplant, but it's nice to know it's about the same as two years ago.

Thank you all for your best wishes that everything would go well
and it did!  This is a powerful group of people. :)

Now, I have to rest so that I can pick up my new babies from Barb
on Sunday. :)  I'll email some more tomorrow.

    Thank you again!

Tonya.

Yes, Del has the babies and they are fine.  She thinks they are
wonderful.  I just know you miss Lovey especially :) and Merry.  I have
to get to bed in case we go today to get them.  There is a big winter
snow storm brewing which is supposed to hit southern Wisconsin and
northern Illinois today, Sunday.  If so, Tom will overnight the
kitties.  We haven't been able to contact Barb to see if she can
continue the leg on Monday instead of Sunday, but we will figure it out.

You will be the first to know when we have them safe and home.  You
will always be their very, very special person and we will always keep
you updated and in their lives. :)

I only know that Del has them, nothing more.  Like you, I am
waiting on pins and needles.

Hi All PLEASE CROSS POST WIDELY!!

Lovey & Merry are stuck in Bloomington, IL because of the
winter storm in north IL and southern WI.  We are trying to resume the
legs tomorrow, but we need somebody who can drive from Bloomington, IL
to Mendota, IL and then someone to drive from Mendota, IL to Beloit, WI
to arrive between 11AM and 12 NOON Monday in Beloit.  The person who
can drive from Bloomington, IL would need to pick the cats up
today/tonight and overnight.  Otherwise, the person who has them now
has to be at work by 6:45 AM and the new driver would have to meet her
very early.

If anybody can help we would be so thankful.  You can reply to
Peggy Dial, Kitty Transport Coordinator, at [EMAIL PROTECTED], phone
618-625-2511, or to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED].

The rest of the trip is covered.  Please cross post widely!  We
need to get these two felv+ kitties home to their forever home in
Wisconsin.

Hey Everybody!!

Good new!  Yippee!!! The legs are filled again!  Thank you for
everybody's help.  Instead of a 248 total miles leg for us, we are
doing a 648 total miles to get Lovey and Merry.  We will be going
tomorrow and meeting one of our drivers in Portage, WI.  I guess you
can tell we want those cats home with us.  We will probably stay the
night in a motel and come home Tuesday.

I will email everybody when we get home and take care of all of the
cats' needs.  This was just meant to be.  One of our volunteers is a
heart transplant
recipient as I am and was born in the same month as I just one year
apart.  There have been many miracles on the way to getting these cats.
:)

    Thank you all so much.

2005-02-23 Thread Brenda K. Smith

Hi All

Sorry to be so long getting news to you, but I was totally
exhausted last night and not much more rested today as yet.

Lovey walked in here like he owned the place. lol  He likes all the
cats, but NOT the dogs.  He growls at them if they even walk by. :)
His neck wounds could have been caused from dog bites which could be
why he growls at the or he just isn't used to dogs.  Merry hasn't
warmed up as much yet.  She has eaten since we got home last night and
this morning, but right now she is hiding under the stairs in the
basement.  I don't think she is too impressed with the dogs either, but
the frosting on the cake came when my newest Baby Kitty (who I adopted
last May) hissed at her.  I think it hurt her feelings. :(  She'll come
around I'm sure and Lovey will eventually get better feelings for the
dogs.  He is better already today.  They are both such wonderful cats
and real troopers after that long trip.

By the way, Lovey is not a Seal Point Himalayan.  He is a Chocolate
Point Birman.  Merry is a Lynx Point Himalayan.  She is not really that
skinny.  She just needs to fill out and recover from having babies.
They will both be on Wellness dry and some occasional canned.

I will write more later about our trip.  You won't believe the
story.  Truly amazing that these cats are here and well.  We will
forever be grateful for all the help and good wishes from all involved.

    More later.

Re: OT: Lovey and Merry Home! :) - VERY LONG!

2005-02-24 Thread Brenda K. Smith

Hi Again.

Peggy, will you call Tinley and pass my previous email info to her
and also this email info?  I get her email bounced back every time I
sent one to her work.

OK, changed my mind.  I think Lovey is a Ragdoll.  He has the same
type of fur that my Baby Kitty has and she is a Tortie Point Birman.
She is a mix and rather than the white mittens that Birmans have her
paws are tortie point.  But, she has the Birman fur that never mats.  I
did some research of my pedigree books and Lovey looks almost exactly
like a Ragdoll.  Some Ragdolls have the white mitten paws, but some
have the chocolate paws like Lovey.  Two or three times now I have
picked him up under the armpits with both hands and hold him and he
justs hangs down and loves it.  It doesn't really matter what he is,
but I like to match them as close as possible when I can.  He continues
to be adorable.  He lays next to me on the couch and then up on my
daughter's lap and lays there.  He wants to be fair you know. lol

Right now precious Merry is laying on my bed.  Whenever I go in
there she starts to purr.  I stop and pet her, give her kisses and she
rolls over on her side. :)  She came up from the basement earlier
tonight and wanted to eat.  She had 1/2 can and nibbled on some dry.
She is starting a mat by her neck and her ears are quite dirty.  I'm
just not doing too much to her except get her Interferon down until she
feels more comfortable here, but she is definitely responding.

We were to pick them up Monday night around 9:30 PM in Portage,
WI.  Thanks to the selfless wonderful Gail, Valerie, Mitch and Tom
(along with all the great people who were helping) we were going to
accomplish this goal.  Gail kept the cats two nights and started after
a long day at work Monday evening getting them to Valerie and Mitch.
Valerie and Mitch started after work when Gail passed the cats to
them.  Then Valerie & Mitch passed the cats onto Tom in Beloit,
WI.  Tom was to drive to Portage, WI and meet us at 9:15 to 9:30 PM.

Everthing started out fine for us.  We were getting ready and
planned to leave at 2:00 PM central time in order to be able to stop
for dinner and get to Portage in plenty of time.  I was getting ready
and around 1:15 PM my husband told me he accidentally spilled his
coffee on the carpeted stairs when coming into the house through the
back door which also leds down to the basement.  He said he tried to
wipe it up.  I asked him to spray it with Nature's Miracle, scrub it,
wipe it up and then spray a coating to let it dry.  It's an enzyme
eater and works wonderfully.  I thought it was just a small area on the
step.  It turned out to be the entire first step, second step and onto
the landing rug and they were soaked and slippery. A few minutes later
after my husband had worked on the spot, my daughter went downstairs to
get something for the trip.  I heard her go and went into the kitchen
to go down the two steps to yell at her to get something else so she
didn't have to make two trips.  I was barefoot.  I am always barefoot
in the house summer and winter.  Must be my early beginnings.  I was
born in Paducah, KY. :)  Anyway, all of my floors are oak with no
carpets.  The two stairs to go down to the landing to go to the
basement or out the back door are carpeted with a tweed carpet.  As
soon as my right front foot hit the first step (it felt like an ice
skating rink ice) it slid right off the step passed the second step to
the landing, my left foot and leg were still on the oak floor so my
left leg and foot ended up backward under me and my right foot kept
going while my right arm was trying to save myself from hurling on down
to the basement.  At all of our doorways because of boarding dogs in
our home we have the older wooden accordian type gates.  The one at the
doorway in the kitchen which leads to the basement and outside has been
busted through and eaten through at times.  Those types of gates are
hard to find.  Anyway, my husband has tried to keep repairing them.  He
had screwed the slats together the last time with screws and nuts.  My
left front thigh was in intense pain, the complete top of my left foot
and four toes were immediately purple, stiff and swollen.  At the time
my left leg turned under me my right thigh must have hit the edge of
the oak floor just before the stairs and the rest of my right leg hit
the stairs hard.  My daughter was running up the stairs to me as soon
as she heard me fall.  I was unable to speak or move the pain was so
intense.  She kept screaming for her dad, but he couldn't hear her at
first.  As the pain receptors in my body started dulling the pain I
looked down and saw blood on my tan slacks.  I lifted my right arm and
my daughter said, "Oh my God".  I looked then and I had a very deep
gash about 1-1/2" going horizonally across under my wrist and about
1/4" deep or more along with two more triangular gashes down the fatty
part of the right forearm.  The blood was kin

OT: Lovey and Merry Home! :) - Third Act! LONG!

2005-03-03 Thread Brenda K. Smith

Hi All..

Peggy, would you please pass this on to Tinley?  Thanks.

Also, thank you Dan for your leg of the trip.  I understand it
wasn't so special. :) You are a good man.

I left off with going to meet Tom at the Wisconsin Dells.  We
arrived between 10:00 and 10:30 PM.  We had a few words with Tom and
thanked him again profusely.  When he opened his car door the tom cat
smell just about floored us. lol  Poor Tom. :(  We got the cats
transferred to our car and thanked Tom again.  He took off for home and
we decided to find an out of the way place in the Dells.  We were tired
and knew the cats would appreciate getting out of the kennels.  Also,
since we hadn't brought any gas masks I knew we needed to do some
cleaning up. lol

Just a few blocks from the pick up we found a small place called
The Malibu Inn.  It is owned and operated by a very nice Turkish
family.  My daughter went to check to see if they had a quiet room and
if they would accept cats.  Janine thought she shouldn't say anything
in case they wouldn't let us check in.  I suggested she play it by
ear.  I wanted to stay in the car with the cats.  Anyway, a little
later I saw the man owner take her to a room so that she could check it
out.  She came over to the car and said she thought it was fine and we
could check in with the cats as long as they remained kenneled.  We
just looked at each other because we knew we weren't going to leave
them all night in the kennels, but we let the owner think that.  I had
brought Ozium spray for odors, a disinfectant to clean the kennels and
spray things around the motel room.  I've seen too many programs on the
supposed cleanliness of motel/hotel room. :)  We also brought Nature's
Miracle in case Lovey sprayed.

The man owner kept hanging around trying to be helpful and I just
wanted him to leave us alone so that we could get the cats out of the
car.  We didn't want him to smell the inside of the car or the cats or
he surely wouldn't have let us check in. lol  We left the car running
with the heat on and took everything in but the cats.  We also didn't
want to take a chance that one of the cats would get out the door while
bringing things into the room.  We got everything in and about to go
get the cats in when he knocked on our door.  I forget what he wanted,
but he was just trying to be helpful.  After we got rid of him, we ran
out to the car (parked in front of our room) and got the cats into the
room.  Within seconds the entire room was permeated with Lovey's tom
cat smell.  It was intense.  I asked my daughter to get a plastic bag
out of the car and I let the cats out of the kennels.  Lovey had a big
blue towel and a folded sheet which were saturated with urine.  I
shoved those into the bag, tied it and asked Janine to put it in the
trunk until we could find an outside waste container.  I then
disinfected his kennel, dried it out and put fresh bedding in.  We also
started spraying the parts of the room that the cats weren't in.  They
were afraid of the spray so just sprayed away from them.

Meanwhile, Lovey and Merry are still eating canned and dry.  I
actually fed them before I cleaned out his kennel.  Merry had a litter
box in her kennel and she had gone in it, but there was no smell.  When
they finished eating they started exploring running over both beds,
sniffing everything and just generally feeling free at last. :)  We
checked them both over and both appeared to be just fine.  Lovey had
litter stuck in his paws and we pulled out what we could without
hurting him.  Merry was very ladylike.  It took about two hours of
intermittent spraying of Ozium before we got rid of the tom cat smell.

We were going to go out for a late dinner, but decided we didn't
want to leave the cats alone in a strange room.  So, we broke out some
cheese (Wisconsiners you know? :) ) and crackers that we had brought
along in case we got hungry, poured a glass of wine and laid back to
watch some television while the cats explored.  We had two double beds
so they had a blast walking back and forth across our heads on the
pillows like they were looking for the path to Nirvana. lol  Lovey made
himself at home after a couple of pieces of cheese on the pillow next
to my daughter.  Merry was also enjoying some cheese with me on my bed
and she settled down by my side.  When we were ready for bed Lovey
actually had his head on Janine's hand on his pillow and she covered
him with the blanket.  That's how they slept all night.  Merry and I
slept together all night too.  Unfortunately, Janine awoke after only 4
hours of sleep and couldn't get back to sleep.  She said I was moaning
and groaning in my sleep.  Before I fell asleep my top left foot and
toes were so swollen and bruised that I couldn't stand for even the
sheet to lay on it.  Janine said she couldn't believe that I slept
through banging doors, vacuuming, etc.  I guess I was pretty exhausted
after being hurt fairly badly and then driving for

Also, thank you Dan for your leg of the trip.  I understand it wasn't so special. :) You are a good man.

I left off with going to meet Tom at the Wisconsin Dells.  We arrived between 10:00 and 10:30 PM.  We had a few words with Tom and thanked him again profusely.  When he opened his car door the tom cat smell just about floored us. lol  Poor Tom. :(  We got the cats transferred to our car and thanked Tom again.  He took off for home
and we decided to find an out of the way place in the Dells.  We were tired and knew the cats would appreciate getting out of the kennels.  Also, since we hadn't brought any gas masks I knew we needed to do some cleaning up. lol

Just a few blocks from the pick up we found a small place called The Malibu Inn.  It is owned and operated by a very nice Turkish family.  My daughter went to check to see if they had a quiet room and if they would accept cats.  Janine thought she shouldn't say anything
in case they wouldn't let us check in.  I suggested she play it by
ear.  I wanted to stay in the car with the cats.  Anyway, a little
later I saw the man owner take her to a room so that she could check it out.  She came over to the car and said she thought it was fine and we could check in with the cats as long as they remained kenneled.  We just looked at each other because we knew we weren't going to leave them all night in the kennels, but we let the owner think that.  I had brought Ozium spray for odors, a disinfectant to clean the kennels and spray things around the motel room.  I've seen too many programs on the supposed cleanliness of motel/hotel rooms. :)  We also brought Nature's Miracle in case Lovey sprayed.

The man owner kept hanging around trying to be helpful and I just wanted him to leave us alone so that we could get the cats out of the car.  We didn't want him to smell the inside of the car or the cats or he surely wouldn't have let us check in. lol  We left the car running with the heat on and took everything in but the cats.  We also didn't want to take a chance that one of the cats would get out the door while bringing things into the room.  We got everything in and about to go get the cats in when he knocked on our door.  I forget what he wanted, but he was just trying to be helpful.  After we got rid of him, we ran out to the car (parked in front of our room) and got the cats into the room.  Within seconds the entire room was permeated with Lovey's tom cat smell.  It was intense.  I asked my daughter to get a plastic bag out of the car and I let the cats out of the kennels.  Lovey had a big blue tow
el and a folded sheet which were saturated with urine.  I shoved those into the bag, tied it and asked Janine to put it in the trunk until we could find an outside waste container.  I then disinfected his kennel, dried it out and put fresh bedding in.  We also started spraying the parts of the room that the cats weren't in.  They were afraid of the spray so just sprayed away from them.

Meanwhile, Lovey and Merry are still eating canned and dry.  I actually fed them before I cleaned out his kennel. Merry had a litter box in her kennel and she had gone in it, but there was no smell.  When they finished eating they started exploring running over both
beds, sniffing everything and just generally feeling free at last. :)  We checked them both over and both appeared to be just fine.  Lovey had litter stuck in his paws and we pulled out what we could without hurtin

deaf dalmation might tag along for a couple short legs.

See updated and revised trans route below...

update I sent to the list here?  I sent it to the list on March 3.  I
just wanted to make sure that those who were part of their lives during
the trip, etc. got to hear that they got home in good shape.  I'm
wondering if I should send it to the List again??

Tonya

No, I didn't get your reply.  Before today I had only two replies
from off list, Jenny and one of the drivers on the transport.  As I
replied to Del I just wanted to make sure all the people who helped
with Lovey and Merry and were interested in their welfare would get the
"rest of the story" as Paul Harvey always said on his program. :)

I am watching Lovey and Merry's diet closely.  They are on Wellness
dry mostly.  Lovey is almost free of his tom cat smell.  Merry
continues to drink large amounts of water.  Maybe it is normal for her,
but I have never seen a cat drink so much.  Soon I am going to check
her blood sugar and if that is normal I will talk to my vet.  Merry is
awfully young for kidney problems like CRF, but I suppose it could
happen.  I sure hope not.  She is getting sweeter every single day.
She is a master of silent meows when she wants something. :)

Do you want to see pictures of Lovey and Merry at home?

2005-03-11 Thread Brenda K. Smith

Barb...

Thanks so much.  I get an email newsletter from Pets & Animal
World (PAW) and have copied their information on TNR below.  I am a
member of PETA, but I am NOT happy with their position on tnr. :(

The following below
article appears in the Feb. 2005 edition of "The Caregiver Connection,"
the newsletter of the New Jersey Animal Rights Alliance (NJARA)
Feral Cat Program. If you are a
feral caregiver who lives in New Jersey, please contact Rebecca at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and sign up for NJARA's Caregiver Network. Many
thanks to Rebecca for the following information!

Don't buy into the cruel myths about feral
cats and kittens.
Discover the compassionate solution that really works!

Many well meaning feral cat advocates and TNR
supporters are unknowingly writing checks to organizations that are
opposed to TNR. These groups are working feverishly to educate the
public about the dangers of TNR and the benefits of trap and kill
programs. The following is intended to inform and educate all feral cat
advocates about those organizations trying to sabotage all that you
work for every day.

PEOPLE FOR THE ETHICAL TREATMENT OF ANIMALS (PeTA)

>From www.peta.org: "Having witnessed first hand the gruesome things
that I can happen to feral cats, we cannot, in good conscience,
advocate trapping, altering, and releasing as a humane way to deal with
overpopulation."

"PETA cannot in good conscience oppose euthanasia as a humane
alternative to dealing with cat overpopulation."

>From www.askcarla.com: "The act of releasing a cat is, in the eyes of
the law, abandonment and is illegal in many areas."

Carla also makes a point to say that if colonies exist they should only
be "situated in an area where they do not have access to wildlife and
where the weather is temperate."

>From PETA's publication Why all Cats Should be Indoor Cats: "Euthanasia
is a tragic necessity."

PETA's factsheet Trapping is the Kindest Solution actually encourages
people to trap and kill feral cats. It reads: "Please do not allow the
prospect of euthanasia to deter you from trapping cats. If you leave
them where they are, they will almost certainly die a painful death. A
painless injection is far kinder than any fate that feral cats will
meet if left to survive on their own."

AUDUBON SOCIETY

The National Audubon Society passes down their resolutions to their
regional chapters, who then make their own statements.

>From www.audubon.org: The National Audubon Society states that they
"will work with the scientific, conservation, and animal welfare
communities to educate the public about the dangers that feral and
free-ranging domestic cats pose to birds and other native wildlife."

The New Jersey Audubon Society has taken a stance that is strongly
opposed to TNR and feral cats.

>From www.njaudubon.org: "These cats suffer short, miserable lives, and
can cause flea infestations and transmit serious diseases to humans."

"(Cats) can transmit serious diseases to humans, such as cat-scratch
disease, plague, or rabies. Avoid contact with stray animals and call
your local animal control officer who can safely and humanely remove
the animal."

AMERICAN BIRD CONSERVANCY (ABC)

With their "Cats Indoors!" campaign, ABC has blamed feral cats for the
decline in bird and other wildlife populations and is attempting to
eliminate TNR efforts.

In the Nov/Dec 2003 issue of Best Friends Magazine, Cats Indoors!
Director Linda Winter states that feral cats should be adopted, killed
or placed in feral cat sanctuaries.

>From www.abcbirds.orgjcatsj: ABC "strongly opposes managed free roaming
cat colonies."

>From ABC's publication "Managed" Cat Colonies: the Wrong Solution to a
Tragic Problem: "TNR clearly is not in the best interest of birds and
other wildlife or the cats...It also undermines efforts to encourage
responsible pet ownership by keeping cats indoors."

HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES (HSUS)

The HSUS tends to dance around the issue of TNR. To avoid conflict they
do not take a firm stance about feral cats, however, their negative
impression of free roaming cats is clear.

>From HSUS's Statement on Free Roaming Cats: "Free-roaming cats...are
often hit by cars or fall victim to disease, starvation, poisons,
attacks by other animals, or mistreatment by humans. Free-roaming cats
also prey on small mammals, songbirds, and other wildlife; spread
zoonotic diseases such as rabies; defecate on other people's property;
and cause car accidents, among other problems."

THE WILDLIFE SOCIETY

>From www.wildlife.org: The Wildlife Society opposes "the passage of any
local or state ordinances that legalize the maintenance of 'managed'
(trap/neuter/release) free-ranging cat colonies."

If what you just learned has made you upset, please react by contacting
these organizations and telling them so. It is important to spread the
word about these "animal welfare" and wildlife organizations that are
promoting the killing of feral cats or, at the

Cherie...

Yes, I remember Snowball.  I know you were devastated and confused
at his very fast passing.  I try to read every message, but usually
don't have the time to answer many.  I have been on this list for over
7 years.  Snowball was a beautiful boy.  My first positive Peridot
(Peri for short) is at least 9 years old and has been with me for over
7 years.  And now there are Lovey and Merry. :)

I know what you mean about the word no.  When I was younger I
couldn't pass up any stray at all.  I had at one time 9 dogs and 7
cats.  I also raised a 2 week old fawn with a broken leg left by its
mother because he couldn't keep up.  Also, raised a fox cub, baby
raccoon, a mouse, a chipmunk, a bird (finch), etc.  I'm much older now
and just can't take as many as I used to take.  But, like so many
others on this wonderful list I wish I could win the lottery so that I
could save many, many more cats and dogssigh.

In addition to my cats, I also am loved by two dogs, Otis and
Cory.  Since I own and operate a Pet Camp (a boarding facility for dogs
and cats in my home) I get to care for and love lots of cats and dogs.
I also have a husband of 40 years and a 34 year old exceptionally
beautiful daughter (inside and out).

Hope you get the pictures of my furbabies from Barb.  Going nighty
night now.  I'm beat.  Old ladies have to get their sleep you know. lol

Re: TOM - LONG!

2005-04-10 Thread Brenda K. Smith

Barbara

I have been on this list since 1997, and I mostly lurk in the last
couple of years.  In November, 1997, I live trapped an orange tabby
male who had been hanging around our woods.  I took him to my vet to be
neutered and check for Feline Leukemia.  She did the Elisa test and it
came up positive.  She estimated that he was at least 2 years old or
older.  He showed no signs of illness from the felv so had her send in
an IFA test to the lab.  The IFA came back positive showing that the
virus was replicating in his bone marrow.  At the time I knew only the
veterinary thought process on feline Leukemia which was to euthanize
right away to protect my other negative cats.

Having a perfectly healthy appearing cat euthanized made no sense
to me.  I told my vet I was taking him back home so that he could live
a love filled life for however long he would live.  That was almost
7-1/2 years ago and he (Peri) is still here happy, healthy and loved.
At first I kept him separated from my negative cats, but after joining
this list right after I trapped him and learning so much about feline
leukemia I introduced him into the rest of house.  I had five negative
cats at the time.  In February, 2003, I lost my 17 year old cat, Fannie
May, from Dialated Cardiomyopathy.  On June 9, I lost my almost 17 year
old cat, Suzy Q, to Pancreatic Cancer which had matastized throughout
her body.  Ten days later I lost my 16 year old diabetic cat, Little
Boy.  In October, 2004, I suddenly lost Mikey, 7 years old, from some
type of liver disease.  None of those kitties were feline leukemia
positive when they died.

I grieved so much from the 3 losses in 2003, that I couldn't adopt
another cat right away.  Finally, in May 2004, I adopted a beautiful
felv- look alike Tortie Point Himalayan female named Baby Kitty.  This
past February, 2005, with the help of many wonderful animal lovers I
adopted two feline leukemia positive cats from Georgia.  Lovey is a 1
year old chocolate point Balinese and Merry is a Lynx Point Himalayan.
I had them spayed and neutered before they left Georgia.  If I had not
adopted them they would have been euthanized by now.  They were both
positive on the Elisa and the IFA.  They, too, show no signs of the
disease and are already much loved members of our family.  So, I have 3
felv+ cats and two felv- cats who groom each other, play, eat out of
the same food and water dishes.

I figured that all cats deserve a chance to have a forever loving
home no matter how long they might live.  I do give the positive cats 1
ml of Interferon daily, plus vitamin c.  That is the newest protocol
rather than 7 days on and 7 days off.  I feed them Wellness dry food
except for Peri who has struvite crystal problems and he gets Wysong
Uretic dry.  They all get treats of wet food and small amounts of
people food.

When Peri was first diagnosed and after the IFA test came back
positive, I called Dr. John Hardy the originator of the IFA test.  I
asked him how contagious feline leukemia was and he said, "When it
dries, it dies."  The virus is very fragile outside the host body and
only lasts as long as it is wet.  I keep my negative kitties uptodate
on their vaccinations.  All of my cats, negative and positive, get the
FVRCP every two or three years.  Also, the rabies vacc. every 3 or 4
years.  According to my vet giving the cat vaccs. to my positive
actually helps to build their immune systems.  But, they don't get them
all at once.  It is spread out at least 2-3 weeks for each
vaccination.  My positives, of course, do not get the felv vaccination.

Anyway, good luck with Tom.  I hope you get to keep him and just
love him for as long as he lives.  He may not live a long live, but
then again, he may.

Re: o/t blockage question

Kerry.

Removing a cat's penis is called an Urethrostomy and in my
experience is only done as a last resort when a cat keeps blocking
several times no matter what the treatment.  In other words, as a last
resort.  I was a veterinary technician for many years and only assisted
in one Urethrostomy on a cat who continually blocked with crystals.  I
could see one reason why a vet would do this procedure on a first time
blocked cat and that would be if the vet had tried to force a catheter
into the penis carelessly causing rupturing of the penile tissue thus
destroying the penile urethra.  The procedure is painstaking and
doesn't always turn out well.  There is sometimes bladder incontinence
in the cat and UTI's.

My positive cat, Peri, blocked a couple of years ago for the first
time and my vet sedated him and started trying to rinse out the penis
with saline solution until she could carefully insert a catheter.  She
then proceeded to rinse out the crystals thoroughly and then sutured
the catheter into place.  I  was able to take him home because of my
vet tech experience and give him 100 ml Lactated Ringers 3 times daily
to keep flushing out the crystals.  He was put on Zenequin and a short
dose of Prednisone.  I forget how many days he had the catheter, but I
removed it when it was time.  I gave him a little Ace in the muscle to
relax him beforehand.  I put him on Wysong Uretic, Vitamin C and he was
already on Interferon daily.  I read that Cosequin helps some cats from
blocking.  They didn't know why, but it worked for some cats so I put
him on that also.

I knew the signs of blocking to look for before Peri would block
again.  I think it was two or three more times that he was close to
blocking that I caught in time and immediately started him on
Prednisone and Zenequin.  I continued the Lactated Ringers during this
time.  Finally, after stopping him from blocking for the third time I
called my vet.  She then put him on Amitriptyline which is a
despressant.  Again, it isn't known why this helps a cat to keep from
blocking, but it does.  I also monitor his ph levels frequently.  He
has had no blocking problems since the Amitriptyline.  I continued the
Lactated Ringers for quite some time at the recommendation of my vet.
I no longer need to do this.

There may be other reasons why this clinic vet did this procedure
on a first time blocked cat, but I don't know what it would have been.
I know I wouldn't take my cat to that clinic if I had this info and the
other info you provided.

Hi all
You may remember I sent out an email last week about a
bad vet clinic in Chicago, McKillips. I sent the same email to a PAWS
counsellor in Chicago, and she left me a message saying she'd never had
a"good feeling" about that clinic, and went on to say that people who had
adopted a PAWS cat in the past recently took the cat to McKillips. The
problem was "blockage"--and McKillips recommended, and then carried
out, removal of the cat's penis. Has anyone heard of such a "remedy" for
"blockage"? It seems extraordinary, to put it mildly. I'd welcome any/all
feedback. Thanks, Kerry

Kyle

I'm still feeding Peri Wysong Uretic dry food, although he does get
into my other cats' Wellness dry food.  I'm not sure in Peri's case if
the food is helping keep his ph level down or not.  I really feel that
it is the Amitriptyline that keeps him from getting crystals again.  I
tried reducing his dose to every other day awhile back and within 3-4
days he started exhibiting early signs of trying to block so put him
back on his regular dose.

That almost happened to my male
non+. He had to stay at the vet's twice with a catheter. The second
time for almost a week. They said if it happened again, the would
probably have to "make him a girl".

We were feeding Max Cat Adult at the
time, due to no by-products on the label. So if I had a male, I would
definitely avoid Max Cat. Could be coincidence though. He's been okay
since. That was 5 or 6 years ago.

So Brenda, what are you feeding Peri
now?
