Re: [Felvtalk] LTCI injections ??
I used LTCI when my 11 yo was first diagnosed. I believe it helped bring him back from a very low point (anemia, anorexia, etc). He stayed on it for about a year, then once he was stable I felt it wasn't worth the continued cost, so we stopped. Re: [Felvtalk] LTCI treatment experience?
Just to drive my point home, my double positive (FeLV+ and FIV+) cat Patches got very lethargic and sick and my local vet, who had just seen one of my other positive cats die of FIP, told me it was probably FIP. But he did blood work and she turned out to be diabetic and was ketotic from it not being treated. I took her to an internist at a hospital and she was hospitalized for 3 days on fluids and insulin, and they got her regulated and back to normal. We tested her urine and gave her a low dose of insulin twice/day for a long time, a couple years I think. She then got hyperthyroidism and needed medication for that too. But she was really fat and happy and energetic. She then eventually got lymphoma, but even then we caught it early and she responded really well to chemo for a while and was really happy still. But then she stopped responding to the chemo and it was the lymphoma that killed her. But she was 9 years old at that point and would have died a lot earlier if we had assumed it was her FeLV every time she got sick and not looked for the actual problem and treated it. Of my other 5 positives, 3 got lymphoma and the other 2 got FIP. That is what killed them. Not the FeLV, though the FeLV is probably why they got lymphoma and FIP. Michelle -Original Message- From: lernermichelle To: felvtalk Sent: Fri, Feb 7, 2014 9:26 pm Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] LTCI treatment experience? Daniella, I have used LTCI, but it's hard to answer your question because you do not say what your cat has been diagnosed with, and honestly it sounds like she has not been diagnosed with anything but FeLV, which is not what usually actually makes them sick. FeLV is just a very suppressed immune system. It can lead to many different diseases, from lymphoma to infections to primary anemia. There are treatments available for all of these things (though when effective usually only for a limited time, unless it's a basic infection that can be cured with antibiotics). But it really depends on getting an actual diagnosis, which means blood work and possibly x-rays or ultrasound depending on the blood work. If your vet is just saying it's the FeLV, I would take her to a different vet, preferably an internist, and find out what is actually wrong. I used LTCI successfully for my FIV+ cat when he had very low white blood cell counts. I gave it once/week for a month and then less frequently and it raised his white blood cell count quite a bit. It apparently can also help primary anemia (red blood cell count low) when it is severe. But it is not going to help cancer (steroids and/or chemo might for a few months though). It might help fight an infection, by raising the white blood cell production, but antibiotics would also be necessary. It is understandable if you do not want to do anything very invasive or expensive if it will not give her more time. But treating an infection is worthwhile if that is what she has. If she has lymphoma, just putting her on high dose of prednisone or dexamethasone, which are steroids, is cheap and does not make them feel bad, it makes them feel good, and can give them weeks or months of feeling relatively ok. If it's dry FIP, there are new medications that have cured some cats (though I don't know if FeLV+), and high doses of steroids can help with quality of life for a while. But you don't want to give steroids if it's an infection. So if the problem is low white blood cell counts and an infection, I would recommend LTCI. Also I would try it if red blood cell anemia is severe and appears to come from the bone marrow shutting down from the virus rather than from cancer or an auto-immune reaction to something. But I would find out what the problem actually is first, and go from there. At least do blood work. Re: [Felvtalk] LTCI
Hi, Thank you for asking.. Originally, there was a total of 11 felk kittens we had - and the kitten I mentioned to you who has been on LTCI, her name is Orphie - she was the smallest of all - the next smallest kitten, Little Blue unfortunately passed away, when she was seven weeks old, and Orphie almost died a couple of times also.. as mentiohned, she just never gained weight though she ate pretty well - and all of sudden she stopped eating for a few times - and we made sure to keepn an close eye on them and give her subq fluid, everytime that happens and every time they have diarreah... And we took seven of the larger kitteis to a sanctuary in Iowa.and I kept three smallest kittens - among those three, her brother Raisenette, and Wooley passed away due to FIP - I was so devastated.. among 7 kittens who went to Iowa, two kittens passed away, which also has been devastating --- now I have Orphie who has been on LTCI for about 6 months or so -- my Gigner who is 8 years old, who also is felk kitty gets LTCI - but not often.. I used to give Orphine twice a week - split vials with Wooley and Raisenette as I could not afford, and also because they were so small to get a whole vial -- Now Orphie and Ginger gets a shot every two to three weeks - Hideyo From: marciabmar...@gmail.com Date: Wed, 18 Jan 2012 15:39:45 -0600 To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] LTCI Hideyo, This is great news for your kitten, you, and other Felv + cats that may have to have that someday. Contact your vet and bring them the information on the site. If you have them order it directly through the company as opposed to a distributor, you will save some money. It was about $45 a shot through T-cyte the last time I ordered it. Your vet can show you how to give the shots at home to save a little more money. Good luck Pam, I'm thinking of you and your cat. Hi Sean,Tcyte (Dr. Beardsley) was the original company who developed the LTCI. The LTCI was very reasonably priced. Tcyte was in the midst of trials. The marketing rights? were sold to Imulan in the midst of the initial trials, who then inflated the price terribly. Imulan then sold (probably the marketing rights) to Agrilabs.I'm glad that Tcyte is once again marketing the LTCI.I also hope Dr. Beardsley further develops this product.El > Date: Thu, 24 Mar 2011 20:48:59 -0400 > From: nonservia...@gmail.com > To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org > Subject: [Felvtalk] LTCI thank you! > > Beth, Sharyl, Andy, thank you so much for your concern and help! [Felvtalk] LTCI answer
Hi Sean, Our vet just ordered LTCI directly from the company, and it was about $100 cheaper for the ten pack then the previous outside distributor. So glad it is working for you! We've used it with our almost 7 year old Aggie (FELV+ since birth) since June of last year, and had some good results in terms of bloodwork improvements. She's gone downhill in the last month or so, as we've struggled to get her seizures under control when I stupidly, dumbly, like an idiot (you get the idea) reduced her anti-seizure medicine more than she could take, and didn't increase it up fast enough so as to create even more problems. But, I'm hopeful because she's still here 7 full months after her first seizure, and whatever is causing them hasn't killed her yet. I will have hope as long as she's still her spunky little self. But I do believe the LTCI helped her a great deal when her WBCs, Neutrophils and Platelets started to decline. Anyhoo, the website for the company is: http://tcyte.com/ The contact info is there, and your vet shouldn't have too much trouble ordering from there. Good luck. While Aggie doesn't have symptoms outwardly at present, she has always tested positive on bothe Elisa test and IFA tests from the time she was 3 months old. We've had her tested no less than 7 or 8 time--the most recent being after her cancer surgery in 2009. She's been on LTCI every two weeks since June, so if she's still kicking in March or April of 2011, we might have her retested for the heck of it. I doubt she will have seroconverted, but as you will know from 910 pets and others on this blog--it has apparently happened with others. Not counting on it, but that sure would be nice. If that did happen, I would still consider her as a positive, jut that there isn't enough virus to show up on tests. ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org

Hi Andy, The Internet is getting smaller and smaller everyday. I have been reading your posts on 910 pets about Aggie. I guess when we get that bad news about our fur babies we head for the web to learn more. I so happy for you and Aggie that she doing well. Our vet has Kelsea on Alpha Interferon 7 days on then 7 day off. As of Tuesday her CBC are great. She also very playful and great appetite. She is gaining a little over a 1pound a month. Which is right on track for a kitten. Her attitude is awesome. All the vet tech at the veterinary hospital we bring her to here in MA love her. I been the Mass Veterinary Hospital so much that Kelsea that the vet and I are on first name basis . Since Aggie is asymptomatic does this meaning she still test postive for FeLV even thou she showing no other signs of FeLV. I have heard of some cats may test negtive after LTCI. Did Aggie FeLV show up in the bone marrow, or just the blood? Part of me wants to put her on LTCI now, but the other parts just wants to wait and see how she does. Like you said this won't continue on forever, but for now--everyday is a party with her. [Felvtalk] LTCI
Hi, I want to introduce myself and my very beautiful Ragdoll kitten Kelsea who tested positive for FeLV in the bone marrow ( I know it is not a good thing) . Kelsea was diagnose with FeLV about 8 weeks ago. Right now she is doing wonderful on the treatment plan her vet has her on, which includes Interferon, Atopic and a steroid. She was on dimethylgycine to build up her red blood cells, she has been off the dimethlgycine for about two weeks now. At this point all her all her blood work is normal. She is putting on weight; over 2 pounds since her diagnoses. To look at this little one you would not even know she was sick. : ) I’m hoping someone could let me know anything about LTCI. I’m not thinking about change Kelsea’s med now, since she is doing so well. I would just like a little more information on LTCI. i.e. what kind of success has it had in FeLV. I am also wondering what are the chances the FeLV will go into remission if it is in the bone marrow? Kelsea’s vet tell me that the chances are very low, but I just need to know if it has happen to anyone out there. Many Purrr to all, Kelsea and Sharon ( Kelsea’s Mom) ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org

[Felvtalk] LTCI reply for nephew's FELV + kitten
Hi all, This is in reply to the poster who asked about anyone with recent successes with LTCI. My 6 year old FELV + (since birth) cat, Aggie, has been on LTCI since June and her bloodwork has improved a great deal. For the first time in her life, her WBC is firmly in the normal range. Prior to this, "low normal" of 4.2 was the best we had, and that was not often that it was that high. Usually 3.8 or 4.0 when we would run tests. It was 4.8 as of the last test a month or two ago (up from 2.0) two months prior. She gets a shot every two weeks. We started her when aspects of her bloodwork started going steadily downhill: neutrophils, WBC, and platelets. We were going to stretch it out to monthly, but she had a seizure when we went longer (though now I suspect it might have been the insecticide that was sprayed outside the house a few days before, --and she likes to sit at the screen door) and it is two weeks for the forseeable future. No seizures in 3 months (knock on wood), weight is good, and most recent bloodwork has been the best of her life. She also gets Alpha interferon daily (since birth--so for 6 and a half years now), and I mix a little bit of astragalus into her wet food every night (for the last year--since her surgery to remove an adenocarcinoma of the salivary gland in July of 2009). While I don't think the LTCI is a cure, we did notice an improvement in bloodwork, and the weight she started to lose came back. I think it is probably keeping her head above water. I get weird when I talk about her success--I'm always afraid I'm going to jinx her or something. Stupid, I know. I'm sorry I don't post more--when I try to hit the "reply" button at the bottom of the "archives" page, it tells me it can't process my request. But hopefully this answers some of your questions! Happy to answer any more you may have. Andy ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org
Re: [Felvtalk] LTCI etc..Interferon Heidi
We were giving all 6 kittens Interferon once a day 1cc orally. After the 4 brothers passed, we went to 2x a day after reading that it doesn't keep the virus from multiplying the full 24 hours. Plus, our cats have never had a reaction to taking it once a day, they even come in the kitchen and sit when it's time for the little squirt. We are all just scrambling for any hope. I am lucky that our vet really cares for our kitties and supports us in obtaining the LTCI for us and is just a phone call away. Here is the passage from that document on Interferon: -- #1) NEVER give with food. Inteferon breaks down in the stomach with stomach acid. Always squirt it directly into the mouth where it is absorbed in the mouth and throat lining. #2) ALWAYS keep refridgerated. It's useless if it hits room temperature. Keep unused dilutions frozen until needed. It's unknown how long Interferon stays effective in the fridge. Keep unused dilutions frozen until needed. #3) It's USELESS to do on/off dosing. It MUST be given every 24 hours to maintain consistent levels in the bloodstream. (See excerpts below regarding peaks and valleys). It must be kept in the blood at all times. On/Off protocols are worthless because it progresses forward in times of no intervention. It is relatively new, and being used "off-label" which means no studies were done for FDA approval in animals. The use of Interferon for feline viruses was experimental and the results that vets who use it are seeing are being shared and tried by others. Most of the medications used in veterinary practise are "off-label" human medications that have FDA approvals based on human trials and you will not find specific studies done on cats or dogs unless the drug was specifically developed for, and tested in animals for FDA approval. Interferon is Interferon. It acts the same way in cats as it does in humans. The recent understanding that low doses can be as effective as the higher, more toxic doses and a better understanding of diluting and freezing the Interferon to extend its shelf life has meant great strides in it's use in veterinary medicine. The purpose of low dose Interferon in cats is to mimic the same levels that are naturally produced in response to a viral attack. Many people ask what is the connection between human viral treatments and feline, and why should I care? The connection is this. Viruses all work the same way. They may be species specific, but their biochemical mechanisms are the same. Just as we use human Amoxycillin to treat bacterial infections in both humans and cats, so too can human anti-virals work to help reduce viral loads in cats. Interferon works the same way against the Hepatitis C virus in humans. If you read the La Roche link you will see that the primary functions of Interferon are: anti-viral, anti-proliferative and immunomodulatory. It "interferes" with the virus replication. By keeping the level of the virus down in the host's system it allows the cat's own weakened immune system to help suppress symptoms. The lower dose in veterinary practise is not designed to eradicate the virus as it is with Hepatitis C. Cats chronically infected with FIV or Herpes will always have the virus, so the high dosage therapy is of really no use. The idea is to either replace or supplement the levels of natural Interferon the cat is either not producing or not producing enough of. Interferons are natural virus killers. There are definitely some immune boosting benefits to Interferon but it's primary function is to keep the viral load in the system down. WHY IS DAILY DOSING BETTER? Jere Hough Three Times Weekly Is A Terribly Poor Way to Dose Interferon This is a great article and also discusses the development of longer acting pegylated interferons to better manage the peak and valley effects of the current generation of Interferons: “PEAKS AND VALLEYS - Because interferon has a half-life in serum of only about 7 -10 hours. This means it peaks in the body at about 12 hours and is then rapidly metabolized and excreted. At 24 hours after injection it is barely measurable. By 36 hours it is not detectable with current measurements. During this peak the is a rapid, dramatic drop in viral load. As the levels of interferons quickly drop to negligible levels at about 24 hours viral loads start rapidly climbing again. By 48 or especially 72 hours much of the gain in viral reduction has been lost. In other words, viral loads in the body fluctuate directly and rapidly along with levels of interferon in serum, and when plotted on a graph look like a sine wave, or a roller coaster. This graph, along with a description of this phenomena, can be viewed on many websites and texts on the subject, including the http://www.roche-hepc.com/ page. These peaks and valleys have been followed for days in human subjects, and are invariably similar in those who respond to IFN. As inte
Re: [Felvtalk] LTCI Rumor (for Heidi)
Thank you for the information on the LTC1. What about Interferon?? I rescued a kitten a few weeks ago and he is FelV positive, otherwise healthy and showing no symptoms. I have him isolated in a room away from my other cats and am trying to keep him comfortable. I am trying to find him a home where he can be an only cat and will be kept indoors but I know this will be difficult. I am feeling kind of hopeless as it sounds like many of your sweet cats didn't make it past 1 year. My vet said he could live many years if kept in the right environment but now I am not sure this is true. I appreciate your feedback. I hope I can find a home for Little as he is such a nice boy. If you know of any sites where I can post his pic please et me know as I don't ant to give up yet. Although the article does not go into any detail or get at all scientific, it seems that it might give this stuff some credibility. I've used the Wei Qi booster too, still have some. Glad you reminded me. Gloria On Jan 12, 2009, at 4:31 PM, wrote: Jenny, I am sorry to hear about your situation. Jennifer, I can't help with the Interferon but can with the assist feeding. There is a Yahoo Assist Feeding that has some great files on assist feeding. http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Feline-Assisted-Feeding/ Just about any canned food can be used. I blenderize the food with a little liquid and syringe feed the mixture. I add the supplements to the mixture to avoid the hassles of pilling. For short term assist feeding meat baby food with no onions or garlic is easy to assist feed. Many kitties will lick it off a coated baby spoon or it is easy to syringe feed. Kitten canned food is higher in calories than the A/D. You want to get the biggest bang per oz with whatever food you feed. Re: [Felvtalk] LTCI Response
Enjoy the time you have. No one, not person or cat or mouse, is guaranteed a minute of life. If we spend all our time wondering when we or our friends may leave, we will deprive ourselves of their happiness and wisdom and we will prevent them from loving us and teaching us. We all die some times and we all die from something. The idea is to enjoy all of life as much as possible and not to fear death. I know. It is almost impossible but I have learned from Mai Mai PG, the Royal Princess Kitty Katt, and my wonderful Dixie Louise. Please try to learn and love without fear.
