Need some help

2007-11-09 Thread Kelley Saveika
Hi guys,

My cats were seized yesterday by animal control. I had taken some
sick animals to Emancipet for treatment and they sent the Austin
Police Department an email stating they were concerned.

I am in desperate, desperate need of monies for an attorney, since I
spend every cent I have caring for these animals. In this case I
could not give you a tax deduction as I do when you have so kindly in
the past donated to help my animals. I could send you a thank you
note and pay it forward to some other rescuers at some other time.

If all you can do is send your prayers that is also appreciated.

THanks,

Kelley

Kelley, give me the details. Did they have a search warrant? Did you consent
to a search or the seizure? What paperwork were you given? What did you sign?
 Is there a hearing date?

Oh Kelley,

Did you keep any of the info Michelle Lerner had given to Hideyo back when
she was having legal troubles?? That will at least give you a start.

If you didn't keep the info, I could go back thru my files and do a "cut &
paste" for you...

RE: Need some help

2007-11-09 Thread Caroline Kaufmann

Kelley:
I am an attorney in Louisville, Kentucky. Since things get done faster
sometimes when they are communicated lawyer-to-lawyer, I contacted an attorney
in San Francisco who practices 100% animal law (yeah, I didn't even know that
was an area of practice either...but hey, it's San Fran...,it makes sense!). I
don't know her personally, nor do I know any attorneys in Austin personally,
but thought I could get you some references for attorneys in your area who are
animal-oriented/friendly through her. I contacted her on your behalf and she
has responded with some referrals for you. I will forward you the email she
sent me in response directly to your email address here in a second.
I hope this provides you some help.

she doesn't have regular access to a puter right now--she's taken a leave of
absence from work, and her home puter died a couple of weeks ago so
email isn't necessaily the best way to reach her right now.

i'll tell her to check tho, caroline--she has a friend with a laptop she's
been using, plus library access, etc.

thanks to ALL who are helping

Why don't you post a name and address where people,
who are able to help, can send checks.

Also can you contact Susan, who used to be on this list, for help.
I am sure she lived in Austin, and someone may know how to reach her.

Hoping you can get legal help to get your kittens home.

Y'know, if we start cross-posting this to the various lists, Emancipet will get
a bad name very fast. At the very least, we can assure their punishment. No
libel or defamation required. Just quote the search warrant adffidavit, which

Absolutely. I'm also wondering who is Emancipet and what's their

Re: Need some help

2007-11-10 Thread MaryChristine
emancipet is quite a well-known mobile spay/neuter program in texas--with,
as far as i've ever heard, a really good, transparent reputation until now.

it really surprised me that a group that was so well respected would do
this, especially in a place where the tensions are so well-known. i was
im'ing last night with a friend in southern california, asking her about
contacts in TX--she's mostly a feral rescuer, and was active in the hartz
flea-product stuff (ie, not the crowds i generally hang with.) told her some
of the what was going on, and she im'd someone else she knew to see if they
had any contacts in austin: what she got back, IMMEDIATELY, was, "there's a
bad shelter there"

impossible to know, at this point, what the motivation was. personally,
i wouldn't do anything to jeopardize kelley's chances of reclaiming her
kitties -- so while i might contact emancipet about this AFTER the hearing,
since i don't know what's behind it all.

surgical process and the preventive health services we offer.

EmanciPET has spayed or neutered over 65,000 pets to date with very
few complications and only 14 fatalities. We do understand, however the
necessity of a proscribed emergency protocol. Dr. Ellen Jefferson, our
founder and medical director, has always and continues to carry a pager
by which clients can reach her with post op questions or concerns 24
hours a day. If there is a true emergency, and our stationary facility is
not open or capable of dealing with the problem, EmanciPet maintains a
relationship with a local emergency clinic and private hospital. This
private clinic will examine and treat EmanciPET patients with
postoperative complications at 50% or more off their regular fees.

[Felvtalk] need some help/advice

2014-09-14 Thread Matt Pardo
Hi everyone, I am new to the list. I have been looking through the archives for
an answer, but haven't found it yet. Sorry if this has been answered before.

My cat, named Roughy, was a feral cat with FIV and FeLV. I have had him for
about four years now with only minor infections. However, on Thursday, he
didn't eat. On Friday, I took him to the vet. The vet said he was extremely
anemic...unfortunately, I was too shell shocked to ask for a copy of the lab
results so I can't say what that means. He gave him a shot of dexamethasone on
Friday and gave him fluids. He seemed much better when I took him home. He gave
me some dex to give him to him. I could have sworn he said one time a day, but
the label says 2 times per day (every 12 hours). My concern is that I am giving
him too much dex. The dosage per pill is 0.5 mg which nets to 1 mg per 24
hours. Is this ok/normal? This is the first anemia I have experienced and I am
really worried. Poor Roughy had a really rough night Friday. Last night was a
bit better, but he still seems to be struggling. I would really appreciate it
if anyone knows if that dosage is ok. Of course, I have tried contacting my
vet, but I can't get him.

Thanks!

Matt

THanks,

Kelley

2014-09-14 Thread Lee Evans
Hi Matt - I have had several cats who turned from FeLv+ to negative. One who
turned back to positive after turning to negative passed away very quickly. Odd
case because my other "turned cat" lived to be 12 years old. He was about a
year old when I rescued him, he was positive and then turned negative. Lived a
pretty long life too, considering he had been a street cat before I got him. I
still have one who was both FeLv+ and FIV+. He turned negative for leukemia but
not for FIV but FIV is not a serious issue around my place. They usually live
as long as negative cats.

I was under the impression that cats who are positive for leukemia are not
supposed to be given cortisone shots or oral cortisone medication. It will
increase a cat's appetite for a while, but not for long. Cortisone also has a
bad effect on the cat's kidneys if given regularly. I could not find anything
current on Facebook although there are a couple of pages for Leukemia positive
cats but no postings since 2011 and 2012. I don't think you will be getting any
up to the minute information on those pages.

Thanks for the feedback, Lee. We were hoping that Roughy had turned negative
because we have had him for four years. He is our only FeLV+ cat and he is
FIV+/FeLV+. I feel like a real idiot for not getting him tested. I should have
been prepared for this. Right now, I am just praying we get through the
weekend. His breathing seems so difficult and I know he hasn’t slept very much
(nor have I). I am reading more about treatments and I am not sure my vet is
very current on treatments. He is a great vet, but he didn’t present any real
options. Ugh.

the label says 2 times per day (every 12 hours). My concern is that I am giving
him too much dex. The dosage per pill is 0.5 mg which nets to 1 mg per 24
hours. Is this ok/normal? This is the first anemia I have experienced and I am
really worried. Poor Roughy had a really rough night Friday. Last night was a
bit better, but he still seems to be struggling. I would really appreciate it
if anyone knows if that dosage is ok. Of course, I have tried contacting my
vet, but I can’t get him.

Thanks!

There are also veterinarians available on JustAnswer.com. $20. I gave Milkdud
dexamethasone injections, rather than the pills, so that may be different.

Hi Matt and Roughy!!
I just read your email and sense you need a quick answer to appropriate dosage
for dex (which is a steroid). I don't have a for-sure answer for you but, I
can say thisI am a health care therapist and also a patient due to several
autoimmune diseases. This I know in humans, oral steroids are given in most
cases in multiple doses (2-4) a day as it is a short acting medication.

I would go by the printed dosage which is usually correct. The best avenue to
get quick feedback is on Face Book. There is a page for "Owners of Feline
Leukemia and FIV cats" There are some very active ppl with a lot of experience
that will answer pretty quickly. I have had only a couple posts here. I like
and post a lot on the face book page almost daily.

Wishing you and Roughy the best, and good health,
Susan and Sophia

2014-09-14 Thread Lee Evans
Roughy needs a transfusion if his breathing is labored. The anemia is getting
him. Can you take him to a clinic that offers blood-matching transfusions? My
poor Bunny had labored breathing and progressive anemia towards the end. Her
bone marrow was not producing any red cells. Maybe you can buy some time for
Roughy. His bone marrow may still be producing red cells but not in the
quantity he needs. If he gets a good dose of healthy blood, it will help him
eat again. You may need to stop the cortisone. You need a second opinion from a
vet who is up on the latest data regarding feline leukemia. What Roughy may
have is non-generative anemia but maybe not. He may still be in the stage of
generating red cells. Have you treated him for fleas? Cats can also get flea
anemia which responds well to a transfusion.

I was under the impression that cats who are positive for leukemia are not
supposed to be given cortisone shots or oral cortisone medication. It will
increase a cat's appetite for a while, but not for long. Cortisone also has a
bad effect on the cat's kidneys if given regularly. I could not find anything
current on Facebook although there are a couple of pages for Leukemia positive
cats but no postings since 2011 and 2012. I don't think you will be getting any
up to the minute information on those pages.

Thank you, Lee! I talked to my vet who is concerned that because of his stress
levels, we should see if his current treatment will help enough. He is
concerned that being hospitalized for a transfusion will be too much for him.
He gets EXTREMELY stressed to the point of making himself violently ill. He was
a feral cat for most of his life so he hates cars and all other people. Anyway,
he seems to be improving a tiny bit although I am hoping it isn’t my mind
playing tricks on me. I am excited that he is drinking water again and I am
hopeful that he will start eating on his own.

No fleas…I haven’t let him outside (or any of my cats) for the last 4 years.

Anyway, thanks again, Lee!

Matt,

I know Roughy doesn't like the vet, but you may need to get his chest x-rayed.
Our Smoosh began having very labored breathing (and it happened very quickly)
and when we took her in, x rays showed a massive amount of fluid had collected
in her chest cavity; it was in essence smothering her. You could not even see
her heart and all you could see of her lungs looked like little feathers. She
was a small (6 lb) cat and around a pint of bloody fluid was extracted (which
was found to contain squamous or cancer cells). We lost her shortly after to
this fast moving cancer, as the fluid built up again very quickly and we could
not watch her suffer.

Sorry to bear less-than-positive input, but this was our experience. Please
talk to your vet about this.

[Felvtalk] Need some help or suggestions in Wisconsin

2009-09-04 Thread Pam Norman
I am in Spring Green, WI, just about 30 miles NW of Madison & am trying
to find a home or foster for a lovely FeLV kitty in Madison. She is
currently living on a screened porch of a very nice woman who
unfortunately is not only allergic but has 2 nasty dogs in the back
year. We need to get a foster or home asap as the weather here is
already turning cold at night. She is perfectly healthy & very
friendly. Just needs a home & someone to love her.

Can someone help?
