Kelley,

Gentle Bridge vibes to Suzie. I am sorry she didn't come out of her coma.
Please try not to blame yourself. The fact that these kitties come to you
already compromised, might be the problem, rather than anything you are doing.

  Take care,
  Gina

Oh Kelley, I am so sorry for your loss, I just finished responding to your
other email and then saw this one. Please don't put the blame on yourself for
trying to rescue too many. Look instead at how many lives you have saved.
Add them up. Our local Humane Society euthanized almost 28,000 animals in
2002. We are all getting the emails showing whole families of cats about to go
to the gas chamber. You are doing good in the face of a horribly frustrating
problem of overpopulation. If some of yours are succumbing to stress, it is
the owners who surrendered that are responsible for causing the stress, not
you!

2007-06-28 Thread Kelley Saveika

I'm thinking, Hideyo.

Stress can bring on FIP, right?

We have Joey, who was 10, and an owner surrender.

We have Lucky Lady, who is 12 and was an owner surrender and I don't think
will live much longer.

We have Caroline, who is 5 and an owner surrender.

We have Suzie, who was 5 and a stray, but from how affectionate she was and
the fact she was spayed already, she was clearly someone's cat.

I think it is some kind of stress related illness. I don't think it is
bleach or cleaning stuff or asbestos. I think something is stressing these
cats badly enough to kill them. I tried to save too many and I'm killing
them instead.

I do have another old cat who seems ok..but he came from outside...and he is
just happy to have a warm place to sleep.

The kittens are all ok, except for conjunctivitis..

I just don't know...

 Kelley.
I;m very sorry Suzie didn't make it, I wish she could have had
longer with you. Are you having a necropsy done to confirm the FIP
diagnosis? I personally would to be sure that's what it was and
especially for peace of mind. Maybe the vet would do it free of charge
or for a discount to see if that's what was going on, I would think he
would be curious.

No matter what any vet say's there is no test that is reliable or
accurate for FIP, only a necropsy can confirm it 100%.

Belinda,

I'm not sure I can afford it to be bluntly honest. I still owe $200 on
Caroline and this was probably $1k more for Suzie..I haven't even asked and
quite frankly do not want to know.

I have to think about what is going to happen if another cat gets sick and I
have spent money on a necropsy for Suzie and I can't afford to treat the
sick one.

She was in a coma this morning and he didn't feel she would come out. I
think he euthanized her more due to that than due to the test result.

(And yall I am not begging for money..yall have been more than generous...I
am just venting..)

You don't think your vet would do it as a courtesy to find out what
is going on. If it isn't FIP there is the possibility of maybe being
able to treat the others that are coming down with unknown aliments. If
it is FIP then you know for sure you have done all that is possible.

Not trying to be mean or make you feel bad, but it just bugs the h*ll
out of me when vets say FIP and stop looking or treating.

Maybe my vet was just more curious and wanted to learn more than others,
she always did necropsies on my guys for free to see if she missed
anything that may help the next patient.

Re: Suzie crossed the bridge

Kelly, You are right about the stress. We had an
owner surrender at our shelter in Fl. He was 5 yrs
old, and had never known anyone else. He just sat on
top of a cabinet and literally tried to starve.

We took him home, and he is OK except for severe
stomatitis. Clearly, it can affect the immune system.

The other issue we ran into last year was Panleuk. It
was a virulent strain. 100's of cats died in good
shelters. In each case, a rescue cat brought it in.
It was the worst esperience of my life, burying 40+
cats from this one group. It broke my heart. I know
your funds are shot, but a necropsy with a tox screen
might help you.

already does not charge me exam fees on any of my cats...and sometimes he
will just take stuff off the bill...but I have never asked. I don't want to
ruin the great relationship we have.

When he initially suspected FIP, he continued treating. When he came in
this morning she was in a coma. I think they just told me the test results
as an afterthought. I do not think he thought she would come out of the
coma. I cannot afford to maintain a rescue cat in a coma for days or weeks
anyway on the slim chance they might come out of it. I know it sucks, but
that's the way it is. I wish I could afford to go down every possible
avenue for every cat, but even then you get into at what point are you just
making them suffer.

I'm really worried about Caroline now, considering 3 of the 5 have died and
one has cancer.

Oh Kelley, I am so sorry for your loss, I just finished responding to your
other email and then saw this one. Please don't put the blame on yourself
for trying to rescue too many. Look instead at how many lives you have
saved. Add them up. Our local Humane Society euthanized almost 28,000
animals in 2002. We are all getting the emails showing whole families of
cats about to go to the gas chamber. You are doing good in the face of a
horribly frustrating problem of overpopulation. If some of yours are
succumbing to stress, it is the owners who surrendered that are responsible
for causing the stress, not you!

Re: Suzie crossed the bridge

2007-06-28 Thread Kelley Saveika

He did a titer test. I know the only way to be certain a cat has FIP is to
do a necropsy (although I do trust his diagnosis). Titer tests without
symptoms (inappetence, depression, and weight loss) don't mean much, and he
generally doesn't do them. In the presence of symptoms with a test result
with high titers, a presumptive diagnosis of FIP can be made.

Thanks for correcting me in my time of grief, though!

You mean corona positive (as are most cats at some point in their lives).
There is no FIP test and the only way to be certain a cat had FIP is to do a
necropsy.

I'll be glad to look at it. But even if the bloodwork looks like FIP -- I have
a friend who had a rescue with bloodwork that screamed FIP yet the cat was
treated with anitbiotics for infection and recovered fully. FIP is so
difficult to diagnose and sufficiently rare that you really have to assume it's
something else and keep looking. If you (or the vet) are too quick to call it
FIP and stop there, then you are likely to miss the real cause(s).

Well, she was treated with antibiotics (and interferon) but when he came in
this morning and she was in a coma, he euthanized her. I don't know
anything about cats and comas and how likely they are to recover. But if he
felt she had a chance for recovery he would not have euthanized her.

Caroline appears to have recovered (knock on wood) and we STILL don't know
what was/is wrong with her. Of course if it is brain cancer she won't
recover. But for now she is doing ok.

assume it's something else and keep looking. If you (or the vet) are too
quick to call it FIP and stop there, then you are likely to miss the real
 cause(s).

You mean corona positive (as are most cats at some point in their
lives). There is no FIP test and the only way to be certain a cat had FIP
  is to do a necropsy.

Dear Kelley,
I'm sitting here in tears, my heart is breaking for you -

And, I tried to respond to your other post (THREE TIMES!!!) but we had a
severe heat-induced storm, and every time I was just about ready to send it,
THE POWER WENT OFF!!

I was so very concerned about your losses and the whole FIP [and toxo]
thing..
My dear, sweet, ancient Puma was diagnosed with BOTH And, thru BW
only
And, I am old school must agree w/ the other replys about FIP only can
be confirmed w/ a necropsy.
(And, trust me, I know only too well. I won't get into ALL details now
[inappropriate], but I did lose two of my own [while fostering MANY - and my
guys
were NEVER w/ the fosters]
And, my Oden, only 3, did pass due to FIP - confirmed thru necropsy.(After
Magpie's [foster kitten] passing..)
And, yes, it was a [foster] kitten [just 3 months old] who died first. [FIP
- confirmed also thru necropsy. Actually, the first necropsy. Shelter
director insisted.]
Glad, sort of, that she did. But, that's when I had an FIP epidemic in
my house..
So, I had all fosters tested, BW only, but NOT my own babies. I figured,
What's the sense? They were never exposed, in the same area, separate
dishes,
etc. to Magpie or any of my other fosters.
Now, w/ Puma, I'm kicking myself in a$$!
Suggestion - Is there any shelters close that would do a necropsy? Reason
I ask is because our shelter always did any kind of veterinary services, no
questions asked. And, w/ your history, I really can't see a problem.
Again, I would attempt to reply to your other post, but, I'm crying my yes
out, and being visually impaired, that's a real problem.
Please know, you are in my prayers
Much love hugs,

This still doesn't mean a cat has FIP, if nothing else fits most vets
will assume it is FIP but the absolute ONLY way to 100% confirm it is
FIP is with a necropsy.

I'm sorry I have to keep harping on this but with all the misinformation
out there about FIP (same as with FeLV) still today and new people
always joining the list I don't want anyone to get and spread incorrect
information. There are enough things in this world to get freaked out
about without adding false ones.

When a vet says a cat is positive for FIP he is wrong, he may be
positive and with high titers for the corona viruses that are suspected
to cause FIP but that doesn't in most cases mean he has FIP.

Unless it is the wet form, then fluid can be pulled from the cat's
stomach and tested.

I have to think about what is going to happen if another cat gets

She was in a coma this morning and he didn't feel she would come

   Belinda,

I'm not sure I can afford it to be bluntly honest. I still owe $200
on Caroline and this was probably $1k more for Suzie..I haven't even asked
and quite frankly do not want to know.

I have to think about what is going to happen if another cat gets sick
and I have spent money on a necropsy for Suzie and I can't afford to treat
  the sick one.

She was in a coma this morning and he didn't feel she would come out.
I think he euthanized her more due to that than due to the test result.

(And yall I am not begging for money..yall have been more than
  generous...I am just venting..)

It is not common, but it *can happen.

I just called Dr. Smith and asked him.

But you are probably asking the other Susan on the list, correct?

Something else must be going on to cause her coma -- I just don't have any
kitties who become coma and had FIP -Susan, are you aware of any relationship
between FIP of symptoms of FIP causing coma in a FIP kitty?

Well, she was treated with antibiotics (and interferon) but when he came in
this morning and she was in a coma, he euthanized her. I don't know anything
about cats and comas and how likely they are to recover. But if he felt she
had a chance for recovery he would not have euthanized her.

Caroline appears to have recovered (knock on wood) and we STILL don't know
what was/is wrong with her. Of course if it is brain cancer she won't recover.
But for now she is doing ok.

I have a friend who had a rescue with bloodwork that screamed FIP yet the cat
was treated with anitbiotics for infection and recovered fully. FIP is so
difficult to diagnose and sufficiently rare that you really have to assume it's
something else and keep looking. If you (or the vet) are too quick to call it
FIP and stop there, then you are likely to miss the real cause(s).

You mean corona positive (as are most cats at some point in their
lives). There is no FIP test and the only way to be certain a cat had FIP is
to do a necropsy.

Re: Suzie crossed the bridge

2007-06-28 Thread Susan Dubose
I had two cats that were confirmed yes or no this way.

One was a kitten that lost all of his fur, and his belly swelled to HUGE
proportions..

He was sooo ugly, he only had fur around his neck on his head.

Caspian had fluid removed from his belly that tested neg. as FIP.

Finally, after many tests, my vet said he was out of ideas, just take him home
and love him, either he will recover, grow out of itor he won't.

He did.

Now he is big beautiful Main Coon, and healthy as a horse.

W/ Serenity, my felv+ cat, same thing, fluid pulled from the belly, tests
confirm FIP.

I also understand that the FIP fluid will be a bright yellow in color.

And when I was working @ the Humane Society, we opened up a kitten for her
spay, and she was full of FIP fluid.

She had been acting fine, however, we did not wake her up.

Her organs inside were already damaged.

This still doesn't mean a cat has FIP, if nothing else fits most vets will
assume it is FIP but the absolute ONLY way to 100% confirm it is FIP is with a
necropsy.

I'm sorry I have to keep harping on this but with all the misinformation out
there about FIP (same as with FeLV) still today and new people always joining
the list I don't want anyone to get and spread incorrect information. There
are enough things in this world to get freaked out about without adding false
ones.

When a vet says a cat is positive for FIP he is wrong, he may be positive and
with high titers for the corona viruses that are suspected to cause FIP but
that doesn't in most cases mean he has FIP.

Unless it is the wet form, then fluid can be pulled from the cat's
stomach and tested.

He doesn't know what was wrong with her. He sent a piece of her liver for

I'm so sorry you lost Suzie and Lucky Lady. I know you are going through a
really tough time right now, and I can definately relate. I've been wondering
as well if there's something I am doing wrong, or some kind of virus/disease in
my house that could contribute to my losing 3 kitties in the space of a month
and a half, when I had nothing but healthy kitties for 12 years.

It is so tough to pinpoint a cause though, and it may be just a run of bad
luck. I always thought cats were hardy, and could expect to live 20 years as
the norm, but I see now they are alot more fragile than I thought. It may be
nothing more than coincidence that they seem to all get sick at the same time.

The stress of worrying about your babies, and worrying about doing all you can
to help them tends to wear one down alot. You are in my thoughts, and
hopefully things will calm down for you and your babies soon.
