Re: Vacs
Hi Jen We give our own vacs and give all of them in the lower leg as far as possible :) They just came out with a new vaccine for leukemia - am checking to see when I can buy them - yippee - it spreads the vaccine out so it can't cause that lump. I give all of mine kitties every year, since I do rescue I really need to protect them (I have 15 of my own) all rescues get the leukemia at abt 12 weeks - no earlier. Rabies is the only one I have to have the vet do, it is not buyable here in CA Terri [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > That is correct, you do NOT want to give them the leukemia vaccine. Re: Vacs
That is correct, you do NOT want to give them the leukemia vaccine. It is a pointless injection, and increases their chance of developing a vaccine associated injection site sarcoma. Personally, I don't give FELV vaccines to ANY of my cats, period. I follow the new guidelines that say that every 3 years is often enough for most booster vaccines, and only do rabies every 3 years. I do not do any other booster vaccines for my adult cats, I have one that has vaccine reactions, and so it's not worth the trade off for me. I would do the kitten series if I had any kittens, though. FVRCP (3 in 1 for Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia) at 8 weeks, 12-14 weeks, and 1 year, plus rabies at 1 year, then at 4 years old, 7 years old, etc. http://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/CCAH/Prog-ID/ID-Facts_Vax-home.htm is a good resource for standard schedules, but I think it's a little over-kill to do so many boosters in kittens, I think 8 weeks, and one within the next two months after that is enough, plus when they are a year old. Mind you, that's MY policy, it doesn't mean it's the right vaccination schedule for YOUR cats. Can I ask you this... When your vet gave your kittens their vaccines, where did he inject them? It's VERY important to only give vaccines on the leg, as low as possible. NEVER give any vaccines in the scruff, or loose skin on the body. RE: Vacs
Hi, Terri, again this become a personal choice, but I follow holistic medicine very strongly so my opinion is based on the practice - when animals body is compromised already whether it is with FeLV virus or FIV virus or any other illness, they recommend that never vaccinate the animals - their immune system will be further compromised and may trigger illness further - therefore, I don't - the only vaccine I may do (not with feLV or FIV kitties, but others), is Distember and FECV/FCR vaccines only the very first year of their life - -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Terri Durham-Stone Sent: Tuesday, August 30, 2005 10:07 AM To: FELV Talk List Subject: Vacs Hi, I am new to Leukemia, but have 4 kittens (4 months) that have tested pos 2 times now and am wondering, they have had their 1st shots (3-1's) but not with Leukemia, should they get at least a 4-1 ? Re: Vacs
Hi Terri, Since they already are FeLV+, do not give the FeLV vaccine. The other vaccines are up to you. Some vets/people feel they need all of their immune system to fight the FeLV and adding vaccines would further complicate it ... other vets/people feel the opposite, that they need the extra protection from the vaccines. I chose to give the kitties their first vaccine and first Rabies and no more. Re: Vacs
I was told by my vet giving a positive the FeLV shot defeats the purpose of the shot, the cat is positive and the shot is useless. So everyone but Bailey, who is my positive gets it, Bailey has never gotten it. -- Belinda Happiness is being owned by cats ...
