In my encounters with HP All-in-Ones (used with a Mac), I've found them

that after about a week she returned it. She spent too much time
screwing around with it trying to get it to communicate properly with
the computer. About a year later I had better luck borrowing my
girlfriend's HP when my own printer was unavailable, but it was a pain
in the butt getting it to work. Plus it was slow and churned through a
ton of ink.

I'd certainly never buy one.

Go get a cheap laser printer. A brother or something. I have a brother
1440 that is over two years old that I must have done about 20,000 pages
with, and it is a tank. The price is under $200 now. And I think it's on
 it's 4th toner now?

An inkjet like that will cost you way more in the long run. The cost per
page compared to something that uses toner is the concern. I'd either
recommend getting something that uses toner if you are mainly going to
do Black and white copying. Brother makes an all in one I believe that
uses a toner, and is pretty much the same engine as the 1440 series laser.

Again, the Ink costs are going to kill you.

While I am sure all this is correct concerning the HP All-in-ones I don't
think one can damn inkjets altogether.
I have a Canon i865, and the ink costs are probably lower than the toner
costs of my HP Laserjet, especially if I buy third party ink cartridges,
which are 2.50 each.

Still, if printing music is the prime task, a laser is definitely the better
choice, since there is not a single inkjet that I have heard off which can
print completely smudge-free prints.

Just be cautious of some printers like the OKI lasers, which have non-equal
resolutions like 600x1200. While those are fine for text printing they are
not ideal for music, as the lower resolution usually means that slurs and
beams print badly.

As far as music scanning goes, it doesn't really make much difference what
kind of scanner you use, however, don't expect too much of it, especially
with Finale's built-in music recognition. While this has improved in 2k4, it
will only work well enough with very clean source music. Whether it actually
saves you any work depends very much on the kind of music and the source.
Most source material can be entered quicker in Finale than the time you need
to correct the recognized music.

I agree as well. My experience with all-in-ones is that they embody the
phrase Jack of All Trades, master of none. I used to have a gig with a
church, creating bulletins and newsletters and the HP all-in-one was nothing
but a problem.

If you're looking for recreational value, they're fine. My parents have a
similar outfit from Lexmark and they love it. I'd never print a score with
it, though.

As a computer consultant on the Windows side, let me chime in and
concur.

There is no real savings in cost compared to buying separate devices.

There are huge costs in time and aggravation because they just don't
work very well.

I have always recommended against them, but a couple of clients have
ignored my advice and bought one, anyway. They all regretted it.

Yeah, it eats ink. And those cartridges are expensive. Did you notice that
17% of HP's bottom line last quarter came directly from ink cartridge sales?

Do you all refill your inkjet cartridges? I keep two carts, one new and one
refilled. The third-party refill kits for HP are excellent quality, and you
can make three refills for about $5 each before you have to get a new $30
cart. The new InkTek refill kits don't make a mess, either.

I swap in the new carts for final copies of large sheets, and use the
refilled ones for everything else -- including, surprisingly, hi-res photos
on glossy photo paper. I'm not sure why, but the alignment and quality do
appear to hold up with the multiple light-ink-coverage passes HP uses for
high resolution.

Speaking of bottom lines, Staples had HP3425 photo printers that included a
full cartridge (not a partial one) for less than the price of the cartridge
itself. It seemed a shame, but I bought more than one printer rather than
new ink cartridges. Now what? :)

I'm waiting for the color laser printers to get within my price range.
There's one for about $400 right now, but I haven't looked into its quality.

I'd disagree about the 600x1200 printing. I have a 1200x1200 Lexmark
printer, and a Brother 1440. I love the Lexmark's printing, as it seems
thicker and it's postscript seems to give a little better output of
slurs. However, the Brother laser's slurs and ties look just fine at
600x600 or higher resolution.
