Re: [Finale] missing fonts after transfer to new computer

2005-08-22 Thread Karen

Hi Ryan,

Try this...quit Finale, go to HD>Library>Caches and throw away the
folder com.apple.ATS. Then restart your machine. See if you can
then see the missing fonts in Finale.

Also, which folder did you put the fonts into? Sometimes Finale
doesn't like it if there are duplicate fonts in your ~/Library/Fonts
folder and HD>Library>Fonts folder. I have moved my fonts into the
latter.

Let us know if any of this helps!

Best,

Karen

Re: [Finale] Default file mnagement

2005-08-22 Thread Karen

When I was using my own default file, I never had this problem/
frustration.

Hi Hiro,

I have always used the same default files that I have taken with me
starting with Finale 2001. I have never had any problems with the
transfer during upgrades. I have one default file for parts, one for
scores and one for importing midi files (when I do midi
transcriptions.) I don't use the setup wizard so I don't have to
call my default file Maestro Default file or Jazz Default file. My
score file is set up for a large orchestra so it is easy to delete
parts and respace if necessary. I am currently considering redoing
my score default file for GPO playback. Each default file has one
measure in it and I use clip files to insert the "form" of the piece.

But there have been times that I have needed to import libraries
etc. I use the Library features within Finale for some things
including Chords as you are trying to do. I clear out the libraries
as you have done but then I use Patterson plug-ins Settings Scrapbook
to move over chord settings too. (Settings Scrapbook alone is worth
the price of Bob's plug-ins in my opinion as it really fills in the
gaps with Finale's Library feature.) You may also try running from
within the chord tool Chord>Change Chord Suffix Fonts. There are a
couple of spacing settings that you can reset. I have never used
this feature myself but you may want to try it. Let me know what you
find out!

For your text blocks, try out TGTools>Modify>Transfer. You can
transfer page text from one document to another as well as many other
things. I also use TGTools>Modify>Transfer>Metatools to transfer my
expression and articulation metatools when necessary. Look around in
this part of the TGtools plug-in. There are a ton of useful things
there!

Best,

I never use chord playback, so that particular lack in the chord lib
importation never showed up for me, but I don't doubt that it is true.
I don't know where those settings are stored, so I can't help you.

I manually change the page size and title settings (though I just
learned that the defaults are stored in the pagesizes.txt document
inside the Component Files folder; this file is referred to every time
new pages are created, such as when extracting parts.)

I also reassign some metatools manually, and set the time sig, lines,
etc., the way I like them, though I am messing around with those
settings so much these days that it is no use to me to import them at
all.

If you only ever open up your default file, using it as a template,
then some of these won't affect you. If you use the Setup Wizard,
though, then you have to know what is stored where, and it is not
always clear, let me tell you!

Anything else not preserved, or not transferable?

I don't use playback too, but I just can't stand how Finale spells chord
name, i.e., minor have to be minus sign for me since that's the only way
to avoid mistake on sight reading sessions, and I like minus sign to be
Courier. I also depend on MIDI chord entry with specific voicings for
specific chord names. This is essential to my workflow.

My problem is Text blocks on the Page Layout, i.e., Title with this font
and that size, etc, those which can not be stored in Document Option.

Well, there are so many weird issues that I encounter in files that
began life in older versions of Finale that I can understand the
precautions that people take in creating new templates. That is, if
the problems occur in non-templates, surely they'd be there in
templates, too.

Any number of the weird problems I've encountered over the years
occur only in my actual files, and not in files based on current
templates where I try to recreate the problems. This includes things
like the tempo tool edits that get completely ignored, and the
cautionary accidentals that don't copy to another document. There are
others, too, like the repeats that play correctly but don't show up
correctly onscreen (i.e., the screen keeps going instead of
repeating).

Don't worry, I didn't take it that way. In the particular project I am

everything in one file is more convenient. The time it takes to change

Text block handling in Finale is terrible. You may be able to transfer
textblocks from one document to another using TGTools. However, this
hasn't always worked for me as intended, but it's worth a try.

Ideally Finale should allow some standard text blocks which have

So what happens if you need to change an articulation that has already

No, I would consider a need for a different ("changed") articulation as

Rght -- and keep in mind that the Layer options in Document Options

spacing.

This was the first thing I thought of, but when I read Dennis's
detailed instructions, I realized that laying out an actual score was
going to make this impossible, since system lenghts are going to
conflict with the lengths of groups of measures.

A fifteen second measure??

Whatever, you will have to use Time Signature Spacing to achieve
something close to what you want. Note Spacing will not do it. You will
also have to adjust the measure width manually, I believe (ie, select
the measures you want to change, doubleclick the selection and change
the width, won't take long).

Just out of curiosity, what do you need this for?

Hi Cecil,

I've also had to do this. It can be tricky, and the ease of doing it
depends on whether your measures are the same or different times.

This is roughly the order I use, assuming I'm not forgetting anything. The
operant thought is: plan ahead!

1. Turn off automatic measure spacing updates and turn on automatic update
layout.
2. Make advance calculations on how long (number of seconds/beats) each
measure must be. That will determine how they fall into systems.
3. Put all the measures in place (blank if need be).
4. Organize the number of measures per system by dragging their widths
crudely, and then lock the systems one by one. (This is a temporary step
just so you can lock the systems with the right number of measures. Cleanup
comes later.)
5. Enter the material into the measures.
6. Apply time signature spacing, which makes the note values proportional
to the time as well as the measures being proportional to the time.
7. In each measure's properties, change its width to the size it should be
to be time-synchronized.
8. At this point, it won't look right unless all your measures are equal
time amounts. If they are, you're done.
9. This step depends on how the music must look -- in other words, if the
system ends are staggered to match the real time. If they aren't to be
staggered, you're done. If they are really to match time and are staggered,
calculate the line width for each system based on the real time.
10. In page layout view, set the system right margin so the resulting
measures are the correct width in that system. Repeat one by one with each
system until insane.

That should do it.

Dennis

There was a time when I would have been nodding my head in agreement as
I read Johannes' post. However, I have found what for me is a highly
effective work-around. Before I create expressions, articulations, or
in some cases, smart shapes, I open a new "document without libraries"
(once called, IIRC, an "empty document") enter a note or rest if needed,
and create the expression, articulation, or smart shape in the newly
opened document. I then save the library, which is then available to be
loaded into any other document.

So what happens if you need to change an articulation that has already
been used? You would have to do this in all 23 files.

As I review the initial post, though, I am struck by another suggestion
(though not so hard as to be painful). If the pieces you need to change
between item 9 and item 10 are full pages, why not just change the page
numbers, by adding or subtracting the nessary offsets?

I need the Finale file to be in the correct order.
