[Finale] Re: EPS in FinMac 2008 woes: daily update

2007-08-22 Thread Claudio Pompili
Don't know about FinMac2k8 EPS but I've done a lot of EPS from
Fin2k7c/OSX 10.4.10 to Word 2k4 in last 6 months without any problems
(after I'd done some serious re-organising of all of my fonts [I use
PS Type 1 fonts wherever possible] and noting all the discussions on
EPS probs on this list). The issue for me was which format graphic
file, other than the full EPS, to use that offered a good compromise
between clarity and size, noting that Word 2k4's preferred format is
PNG. At times there are significant file size differences between
Preview and Graphic Convertor, the reasons for which I haven't as yet
cracked, however, both PNG's are very presentable even with some
reasonable enlargement.

Did a lot of tests 6 months ago and went with Finale 2k7 Export as
EPS (fonts embedded) and then converted to PNG either in Preview or
Graphic Converter 5.9 (www.lemkesoft.com). For annotated examples I
use Illustrator CS3 and export to PNG.

I was curious about Darcy's workflow to Print>Save as PDF, then crop
in Preview and import the PDF into Word. Did some tests this morning
using a fairly basic Fin2k7 score with Maestro and Engraver Type1
fonts and other text fonts. All fairly standard. I created both a PDF
(Print>Save as PDF) and EPS (Export EPS) files from FinMac2k7. I put
together a comparison Word 2k4 doc of both PDF (132kb) and EPS
(492kb) files from all three graphics apps.

Using the PDF file (132kb of complete page) as the starting point, I
found that when I did the cropped PDF in Preview, it retains all of
the underlying PDF data so file size is not reduced from original.
Secondly, when the cropped PDF is dragged into Word 2k4, the onscreen
image appears initially acceptable but on closer inspection quite
fuzzy at modest magnifications. Similarly at modest magnification not
good when printed to Brother laser HL-1430 600dpi and HP LaserJet
1200dpi. Don't understand this result only my system.

Using the same starting PDF file, I got a got a good result from
Preview/Illustrator with modest file size when I converted it to PNG
(60kb) and dragged it into Word 2k4. Using the Fin2k7 PDF file.

I also tried converting from the PDF to EPS and dragging that into
Word2k4. Preview doesn't provide for saving the PDF file as EPS but
both Graphic Converter and Illustrator do but create EPS files of
around 700kb in size. When dragged into Word 2k4, the onscreen
graphic looks awful but prints in crisp EPS clarity. Still, this
could be a workaround if having problems with Finale's Export EPS.

Of course, the very best results in the most straightforward manner
were achieved by starting with the Fin2k7 export EPS file and
embedded fonts.

OK, this just got me.
Force update used to be Opt+Update long time ago, and I have been
wondering what happen to it. It is now Shift+Update? I don't
understand. In Mac GUI, Opt will modify menu item by its Guideline.
Shift key has no function for that.

I often question why Finale has to change key command on every upgrade
path. This one is especially illogical to me.

Re: [Finale] Size Matters

2007-08-22 Thread Bruce E. Clausen
Andrew and Christopher, thanks for the replies. My pages at 100% are
difficult to read: too small and would be terribly difficult to read from
the podium. The score is Winds, Brass, Perc. and harp, solo horn, strings,
totalling 18 staves, which extend (at 100%) from about 1" (on the ruler) to
7" on the page. Seems to have plenty of room for enlargement.
Nevertheless, on other scores when I've over enlarged, the score merely
extends too far down the page, sometimes beyond (further down). I've never
seen a sizing problem like this where each page is one measure of
super-enlarged type, which is located on the left side of the page (about
2"), leaving the remainder of the page (left to right) blank.

Is it possible that there is so much music in the measures that
normal spacing fills an entire line? I know that sometimes I put the
lyric "through" onto a sixteenth note and that causes the whole
measure to expand.

If you had to, you could select a measure in Mass Edit and hit the
up arrow to force it onto the previous system. I often manually lay
out pages like this.

Send me the file privately and I'll take a look, if all else fails.

Make sure System Locks are off (you didn't mention them), respace if
necessary, then Update Layout, while on an earlier page (because
Update Layout only applies to the page you are on until the end.)
Update Layout occurs automatically by default, but sometimes you need
to do it.

I opt-clicked the User button in the Smart Shape palette, selected

When I tried a font character arrowhead, I used a font that resides

Where else would I put it?

I'm not sure quite what you mean by a resource, but what you need to do
is to determine whether the poem is subject to copyright, if it is, then
to determine the identity of the copyright administrator or owner, and
contact the administrator or owner seeking permission. Since you specify
that the poem has already been published, the first place to start is
with the copyright and permissions department of the publisher of the
version you have; they should be able to advise you if they control the
copyright, or whether it is controlled by another entity, and if it is
controlled by another entity, the contact information for that entity.
If there is any doubt or uncertainty in your mind about the work, you
might want to dig further; I have had the experience of an entity
claiming copyright when, in fact, they were not entitled to copyright in
the work; the work was in the public domain.

Keep in mind, to, that permission to reproduce a copyright item, simply
conveys permission to make a copy of the words of the poem. The issue of
performing the material, while not entirely unrelated, is a different
matter, and would involve separate permission.

Re: [Finale] Magical Rests

2007-08-22 Thread Christopher Smith

Bruce,

Have you thought that the magical rests actually belong to the
PREVIOUS measure? I see that a lot.

I think TG Tools handles tremolos of chords by creating a tuplet
(say, two half-notes in the space of one) and if you re-enter a
value, you might end up with more notes than the measure is supposed
to contain because you accidentally redefined the tuplet. The rests
created this way would appear to belong to the NEXT measure, pushed
past the barline.

Ah. I had forgotten that Word couldn't handle PDFs properly. I use
Pages myself.

Apple just released Pages '08 (part of iWork '08), so you should be
able to activate another 30-day trial. But it's only $80 (for the
entire iWork suite) so you might as well just buy it, so you won't
have to mess around with Word.

In Word for Mac 2004 (the version I have) an imported PDF prints
with the screen resolution, antialiasing and all, slightly fuzzy
outlines, etc. I was hoping for the razor-sharp music examples I
get with EPS in AppleWorks or Word.

Actually, in Pages (the new program that more or less replaced
AppleWorks) PDFs import beautifully and there is a lot more control
over style and spacing, but I would have to buy it, as my 30-day
trial is expiring soon. I would also have to learn it, and I do
know AppleWorks inside out, which helps for this fussy stuff.

Stu:

You need to contact the copyright holder of the poem.

Send a letter stating your request and intended outcome. It can help
to send a short resume so they know better who you are.

I've had no difficulty in securing permission, particularly from
living poets, when I tell them just how much money there is to be made
and offer to send them a CD of the premiere. Plus, they get half
of your BMI or ASCAP royalties!

Yes, same results.

Could it possibly be the location of your arrowhead? Have you

I have no idea if this might help, but it did occur to me that
perhaps it's the location and not your arrowhead which is the problem.

I'm not sure what you mean by location.

I opt-clicked the User button in the Smart Shape palette, selected
Create in the Smart Line Selector dialogue box, in the Smart Line
Designer I clicked Custom Arrowhead>Select, then in the Custom
Arrowhead Selector dialogue box I clicked Create and got a Shape
Designer.

When I tried a font character arrowhead, I used a font that resides
normally in my font library for the entire computer.

Where else would I put it?

Well, we have a long experience with EPS on Windows, since it was
broken for years and years (at least since 2000), and was never
fixed for Win2000. So when I needed EPS files I printed to PDF and
extracted the EPS from the PDF files. Couldn't you do the same?

Hmm, this seems interesting, and it's only an extra couple of steps.

But how do I get a PS file that is only the size of one staff? I
can get full-page PS files no problem. In other words, how do I
