Re: [Finale] opening a MIDI file in Finale.

2012-01-03 Thread Linda Worsley
As always the people on this list are incredibly generous with advice and
assisatance.

One thing I should have mentioned is that both the client and myself are on
latest model Macs, windows solutions are not possible, alas.

Mostly I am baffled that the client has given me so many files t hat have
opened without a whimper. All Encore files ere created with the same
(ugh.. but that's another story) Encore software, saved as a standard MIDI
file, and all but this one opened without a whimper.

I think my only solution is to enter the thing myself, which I don't mind,
but for some reason the client resists. He wants the tempo and dynamic
data (which is irrelevant, since th Finale files are for print and then
performance by humans) but for some reason he feels is important.

It may, however, be the only reasonable solution, given that I have already
spent far too much time trying to browbeat his original MIDI file, and the
one he re-did, into submission.

Several people have offered to work on it themselves. That's amazing, but
I think I'll just notate from hard copy.

Many, many thanks!

Re: [Finale] opening a MIDI file in Finale.

2012-01-03 Thread Williams, Jim
I would be surprised if this were a type 0/type 1 issue, unless the Encore user
specifically chose to export as type 0.
Also--if the others opened well, that's a sign that the one file is problematic.
If nobody has volunteered yet, I'll be happy to look at the file.

you give me a clue on how to do it. I've found nothing in the manual to

Re: [Finale] opening a MIDI file in Finale.

2012-01-03 Thread Antonio Di Martino

Linda, it might be a type 0/type 1 issue.

MIDI files come in two flavours - well actually three, but that's beside
the point - and maybe Finale can deal only with type 0, not with type 1,
MIDI files (the opposite is less common). You can check if this is the
case by trying a type1-to-type0 converter, or a type0-to-type1.

Are you on Windows? If so, this site has a wealth of such MIDI tools,
including the ones you need.

http://www.gnmidi.com/gnfreeen.htm

The only downside is that these programs are command line utilities, so
there's no point and click interface.

I hope this helps,
Antonio

2012-01-03 Thread Steve Parker
You may have had a better answer by now..
IMO it's never worth fiddling with this kind of thing when you have a paper
copy that can be reinput. Much less error IME than transferring a midi file
across. It is too easy to miss mistakes in the original file.
It may be just me, but if I have a paper copy I always reenter without trying
midi.

When I've run into such problems with midi files in the past, I've
opened the midi file in a sequencer such as Cakewalk or Sonar or
PowerTracks and then saved it again from within that program (without
doing a single bit of editing) and then the resultant midi file has
opened just fine.

Try that, or I'll be happy to try that for you if you want to email me
directly and attach the midi file for me to try to work some magic on.
I promise that I won't do anything else with the midi file and will
delete it once things work properly so your friend's music will not get
pirated.

You could try using Photoscore on the PDF file to create your own midi file and
read THAT into Finale.
