Dennis - The fine print on the October half-off offer is:
North/Central/South America: Offer only available to Finale, Encore, Mosaic
and Sibelius Student Edition users residing within North, Central and South
America (Allegro, PrintMusic, Finale Guitar, etc. are not eligible).

I should have mentioned this in my first post. Apologies. The notice for
the offer is on the home page of Sib.

Hi Bruce,

Where did you find this offer? I just wrote to Sibelius to ask why the
prices were so much higher in Europe, and got the following reply. Which
means that anyone could ship to Europe if they want to, since Sibelius
admits that they can't enforce this dubious policy.

In answer to your question regarding price difference between the USA and
Europe, we have to price our products taking into consideration the price
of our competitors over which we have no control. As software along with
nearly everything else is significantly cheaper in the US we have to
adjust our price accordingly, this is simply economic fact. In addition
higher local prices in the UK (from everything from rent to salaries) mean
that it costs businesses more to operate here than in the USA. Sibelius
USA only ships to addresses in the US but we cannot enforce such
regulations on our various US dealers who are free to ship overseas if
they wish.

It's true that it's played on a piccolo in the traditional pit orchestras
of today; I conducted it a few years ago and had my flutist put on her
picclist hat for those moments.

I don't argue that a soprano recorder should be used, but it may not carry
if your orchestra is (as it should be) IN the pit, not backstage or
wherever-else. Flutists who are not very verse on recorders would have a
tendency to crack on the notes, as well.

Luckily the tune is in F, and the dotted / triplet figure that is so
famous doesn't contain any accidentals, so it lays easy on the
instrument.

you
listen carefully to the movie you will hear the recorder, not a piccolo,

(BIG snip)

In the Broadway score of The Wizard of Oz there is a brief passage
marked Recorder in one of the reed books. It apparently means
soprano recorder, but it is notated at pitch with multiple ledger
lines, and is normally (perhaps always!) played on piccolo rather
than recorder.

Hey everyone

I've got a part in the score that has 4 measures of rest, two are before
a System Expression rehearsal mark, 2 measures after the rehearsal mark.
Finale was converting it into a 4 bar multimeasure rest, so I used the
measure tool to put in a break in the multimeasure rest. Now though, it
makes it a multimeasure rest for 2 bars, Rehearsal mark, then 2 bars of
whole rests. I've tried selecting the two bars and doing the
multimeasure, create popup with the selection tool, updating the
layout, and extracting the part but nothing makes a difference. Any
suggestions on this? (Finale 2008) Thanks.

What isn't clear to me is why you have to create the mm rests for parts in
the first place. It should be done as a default. Are you overriding what's
being done, or is nothing being done?

If you go to FILEEXTRACT PARTSMULTIMEASURE RESTS, what is(n't) checked??

There may be some symbol that has extracted that breaks the mm rest, but
hard to say without seeing.

If all else fails, go to the menu where you set up the Page Layout for
Parts/Score (not under the File menu; I'm at work and can't remember which
menu this falls under; it's the same one as you find Document
Options), set all the parameters for the Score, then peform a
Redefine All Pages which will wipe out all the existing page layout
info (excepting any System Locks, which it will retain.) Then, do an
Update, and hopefully, you will have the solution.

Hi,

Ooh, you don't have

Use
the

4 click in the margin of a

page to resize it.

You often get a dialogue

box asking you the range you want to resize.

Leave the

I can't seem to find a fix. I have a hunch

Bruce,

None of this is a fatal problem.

I quote from before

If you select Adjust System Margins from the Page Layout menu, then
click on a system you like the settings for, then in the Adjust System
Margins window select from [insert system number] to _ [leave it
blank to go to the end of the document] and hit Apply. All the
systems will inherit the settings of the one you first clicked on. If
you only want some settings applied, then make sure only those boxes
are checked.

In this box you can also MANUALLY put in values for each of the margins.
Plus is right or up, negative is left or down, all values calculated from
the staff lines.

All you have to do is click the system, select Adjust System Margins,
then enter a value like 0 for the bottom system margin, hit Apply. If you
say Apply to Systems 34 through [blank] it will make this adjustment for
every system from 34 to the end. Then all the bottom handles will all be
nestled tightly against the bottom right-hand staff of each system.

This is very powerful stuff, and you have to know it. Look up in the
manual under Adjust System Margins. You won't be sorry.

2007-08-23 Thread Bruce E. Clausen
Thanks, Christopher. I have indeed consulted both the manual and tutorial,
neither of which is a model of clarity. Perhaps this is my problem, more
than theirs. I try not to consult the list without having first done these
things. I am grateful for your help and will review and use your
suggestions herein. I have no problem with sending you the file if it comes
to that. Perhaps tomorrow, if I don't resolve the issue tonight.

Thanks again,

[Finale] Magical Rests

2007-08-22 Thread Bruce E. Clausen
Another day, another problem. WinFin06. I'm cleaning up a draft in Page View
(3/4 time). Several mm. after a few mm. of TGTools tremolos, I cease tremming
and have several mm. of tied dotted halves. While cleaning up a couple of
extra ties (inner voices) I have acquired extra half rests in the mm. in
question. (Dotted quarter, half rest; 3/4). I can't erase them. Cntrl-X and
re-entering the notes regenerates the rests. It looks as though the tremolo
selection has leaked over into the non-trem mm., but I don't know for sure.
Any thought from anyone? Help is always appreciated!

Thanks, everyone, for helping. I'm embarrased to say that I found the
problem. In one of my drafts (score view) the meter change (from 5/4 to
3/4) somehow dropped out. The mm. remained visually the same, but when I
went to edit the ties the problem with the rests occured. I finally backed
up the editing to the meter change (20+ mm.) and found that it had dropped
out. I have no idea why the dropout, but all is now fixed. Your help is

[Finale] Size Matters

2007-08-22 Thread Bruce E. Clausen
Another interesting problem. WinFin06. I'm beggining to work with a score in
Page View, after entering the parts in Scroll. I'm attempting to find the best
size for the score on the page, working with % tool. At 100% all is well, but
the score is too small for the page. When I enlarge to 125% the first dozen or
so pages are fine, but the last 20 (original) pages of the score now show up in
one measure pages (one mm. to a page) ballooning the score to over 250 pages!
I've removed all optimizing, page locks, etc., but the problem persists. When
I reset the size to 100%, the pages return to the normal number. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

[Finale] Insertion

2007-08-14 Thread Bruce E. Clausen
Another problem (WinFin06c)! I'm attempting to insert 43 mm. on the front of a

the subsequent section. I've inserted the 43 mm. but when I try to change the
meters in the insertion to map out the insertion mm. to receive the copy, the
following mm. (5/4) change to the new meter (2/4). Then, if I attempt to change

There are a couple of ways to use the Time Sig tool for this. I suspect
that you aren't setting the region, or you are leaving Rebar Music
checked.

Method 1.

After inserting the measures, select the Time Sig tool and double- click
measure 1

In the dialogue box, select 2/4, and make sure the Measure Region is
selected and fill in 1 though 43. Make sure Rebar Music is UNselected.
Hit OK. You now have 43 measures of 2/4, stopping at the end of measure
43, where the time signature should change to 5/4 with no music being
switched around.

Method 2.

Select the measures you want to change time sig for, then right-click the
selected passage and choose 2/4. Rebar is never done for blank measures.

Hope this helps.

Silly question, but have you tried re-applying note spacing? Select the

It shouldn't have -- I have Fin07 and Fin08 (Windows) both installed on
my computer with no problem.

When I switch between FinMac07 and FinMac08 my MIDI setup gets trashed
each time. I haven't tracked it down yet. So there might be something
there.

Or maybe the file just got corrupted. When that happens I can usually
copy the contents to another file and keep going, but wait a minute...
that's what your problem is, so it won't help so much.

Send me the file with instructions on what you can't do exactly and I'll

As to conjectures abt. how ragtime might have fared at the hands of

2007-08-04 Thread Bruce E. Clausen
Thanks, David. I have indeed tried the list and the demo. Because I use
Simple Entry, as I said, Sib5 didn't seem so foreign. Also, call it petty,
as a composer, I resent having to work around having to use key signatures.
Though my work is tonal, it is highly chromatic and sigs are annoying.
Further, as a horn player, I find it disconcerting to put things into a C
score to work around. Is it so difficult for MM to add no key/atonal to
the choices? As a composer I also like Sib's Ideas folder and the ease
with which I can jot (so to speak) a sketch and file it for later. Fin has
no such convenience. It's all these little things, and MM's reluctance to
change, that have made my decision. It may be that MM is happy with the
education market and has no intention of accomodating the professional
composer/engraver. Else why would they be so unconcerned? Simply the
volume of negative remarks on this list should be worrying someone at MM,
but I see no reply from them as yet. MM is well on the way to becoming the
FEMA of music engraving!

Don't give up yet! ;-)
It can be broken up into a couple of measures, barlines can be hidden, music
can be respaced, and measures can be excluded from numbering if that's an
issue! Check out the measure tool for more details. Might make the parts a
BIT more difficult to extract (you'd need to place a graphic rest, etc.),
but will keep the cadenza in-score.

The end of piece option is always a possibility, as you say.

I would strongly suggest that you not put the cadenza after the end of the
piece, which is much less convenient for both conductor and soloist. That
is an archaic practice which stems from the days when cadenzas were
supplied

by the soloist, not the composer, and were not published as part of the
piece proper. That started to change with Beethoven (he did publish
separate cadenzas for his piano concerti, but by the Emperor the cadenzas
were integrated into the piece), and by the middle of the 19th century
composers usually wrote their own cadenzas as part of the concerto (with
the
notable exception of the Brahms violin concerto, probably others that
don't

occur to me at the moment).

As far as using Finale to create a cadenza that looks like one measure
rest

in the parts, that is very doable, and someone else has given you guidance
on that. Another possibility is what I have done with cadenzas: write
them

out as real measures, which appear in the parts as a single multimeasure
rest with Cadenza written over it (and the last bit of the cadenza
written

as a cue for those parts that enter right after it).

Believe it or not - the Blue Triangle appears because you have Internet

Re: [Finale] Printers used

2007-03-02 Thread Bruce E. Clausen
More to the point, there are sprays that giclee' artists use to protect
their works. Giclee' process is just a large-scale ink jet technology
applied to canvas or watercolor paper. One could certainly use one of these
spray products (I believe Bulldog is one brand name) to protect
inkjet-printed music. Cost would become a factor. (and the stuff smells
awful when first applied. OK after it's dry). I myself have thought of
testing some inkjet-and-sprayed scores/parts against the usual laserjet for
smearing, etc. ... and for cost. If one were able to protect inkjet
materials one might also take advantage of the larger format printers for
scores/parts larger than 11x17 (HP has one or two), though I don't believe
that duplexing is available. Also, what weight paper the printers would
handle is a question.

I seem to remember that there's a spray artists use to protect their work,

Go carefully! If the score already has been optimized and carefully
laid out, you don't want to mess this up.

First, lock the existing measures in their layout. Then work out
about how many systems the measures ought to take up. Insert this
number of locked systems using the Page Layout tool. If you use the
Insert Systems or Delete Systems command, subsequent systems will
correctly keep their optimization, whereas if you simply insert
measures the optimization doesn't move with the music, which can
create layout nightmares.

Once you have inserted the systems, make sure that they contain
exactly 43 measures: insert or delete measures, but don't change the
number of systems. You can now copy the solo part from the piano
reduction and paste it into the score.

Now fill in the other parts. If necessary push measures from one
system to another with Mass Edit to correct the spacing. Should you
find that you need more systems, first insert blank ones containing
one measure each, then move measures onto them with Mass edit. Then
you can delete the blank measure from the system.

I will, if you will.

In principal, all publishers print on demand,
on demand, the difference being the size and frequency of the print
runs. Our print runs average between 300 and 400 copies, which, while
certainly not in the same league with the big boys, can't really be
described as print on demand.

I did not use the words print on demand as a demeaning phrase, or in
pejorative sense. So if you were offended, my apologies. Maybe a less
offensive phrase would be non traditional publisher methods would be
less offensive. But no matter how we define such desktop publishing;
it's not the traditional method of how editions are published.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Print_on_demand discusses this new trend
in desktop publishing; and was my point in reference in asking my
question in the first place, which was do such desktop publishing
editions benefit from having an ISBN. That's what I was unclear about.
Does having that allow your editions more exposure?

Numbers aren't the only issue that defines a traditional versus a
non-traditional publisher. From what I've been told: print on
demand/non traditional publishers do not allow returns from vendors or
distributors; and they also tend to have a much higher mark up versus
the more traditional methologies: all of which makes it harder for
such editions to get into the mainstream distribution system.
Again---that's based what I've been told. If anyone else has a
different experience, that's great. I hope the market opens up for
smaller houses and non traditional publishers, because a lot of the
material that matters to most of us, isn't being printed by the big
boys.

Also the editions are distributed by
Harrassowitz in Wiesbaden, while print on demand publishers usually
deal more or less directly with the customers.

The library staff at Columbia University told me that any print on
demand publisher that gets an ISBN or ISMN stands a good chance of
being picked up by a distributor, especially if they have material
they know they have customers for. I was specfically told about
Harrassowitz. So no, while generally what you said can be the case,
it's not always. Just as apparently you can sell directly to
distributors without having ISBNs or ISMNs (according to comments
here).

easier?
Your question actually gets to a workflow issue. One of the hardest
things to do in Finale is to combine two movements which exist as
separate files into one larger ones; it is hard enough to combine two
files, that I make the decision which way I am going to do this before I
create a file, and once the decision is made, I don't revisit it. If the
project already exists as four separate files, I'd go ahead and work
with what you have. Printing four scores, and four sets of parts is (in
my experience anyway) orders of magnitude less challenging and stressful
than trying to combine four movements which already exist as separate
files into a single file. I did a nine movement work (albeit a choral
score) as nine separate files, and combined the files in the process of
printing which resulted in a 24 page booklet, printed two up on tabloid
(11 x 17 inch) paper.

I'm not sure what I would do on a four movement work for quartet. I've
done them, and I've done them both as a large file, and as four shorter
ones. Which method I would choose would depend upon a number of
considerations, including (but not limited to) length of the work;
whether and how the work is to be bound; and number of text, lyric,
articulation, and expression items.

[Finale] (no subject)

2006-08-24 Thread Bruce E. Clausen

More novice angst. I'm working in FinWin06
and attempting to hide several rests. I'm following the manual (Speedy
Entry, H or O) and nothing happens. Nothing happens, also, when I use
the plug-in (Note, Beam and RestHide), either. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

[Finale] Meter Changes

2006-08-23 Thread Bruce E. Clausen

Another novice question. I'm working with a
score that changes meter every now and then. I need to notate "parens,
quarter note=quarter note, or dotted half = whole note, parens." The
manual, as usual, guards these secrets. Any help is greatly
appreciated.

[Finale] No Key Signature

2006-08-18 Thread Bruce E. Clausen

I'm starting to engrave a piece that uses no key
signatures. I've consulted the Finale manual and it seems as though the
only solution is to enter a transposing part in concert pitch and then transpose
via Mass Mover. I can't believe this is the best way. Does anyone
know of a workaround that will allow a no-signature
score?

In Staff Attributes, specify the instrument transpositions for each
staff, then select Display At Concert Pitch to see all staves
transposed to concert. To print a score showing the transpositions,
uncheck Display At Concert Pitch and Bob's your uncle!

Of course, doing this individually for every single staff in an
orchestra score is an incredible pain in the tuchus, but since Setup
Wizard won't let you choose chromatic transposition instead of key
signature transposition before you create the score, there's no way
around it without forgoing the setup wizard altogether.

Would it be indelicate to point out that the Distinguished
Competition has a one-click solution for this -- a key signature
called Open Key/Atonal? I've encouraged MM to steal this feature
before, but perhaps others can join me on this?

In my experience, quite significant. But I have not done a great deal of
comparing. What's even more revealing, perhaps, is to compare
Fin07-Intel with Fin07-PPC under Rosetta.

Unfortunately, if you depend on TGTools (Pro), you will be forced to run
Fin07 under Rosetta to use it on your Intel Mac. I hope Tobias is
working on a Universal Binary of TGTools, but I haven't seen one yet.

Is the speed boost as significant as perhaps it should be?

Hi John,

It means Digital Audio Workstation. You're right about SMF. What gets me
is when people use acronyms for song titles like IDMATIIAGTS (It Don't
Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing)

Ask NYPL if they can interlibrary loan it (or the rolls you need).
Then, make the copies at the microfilm printer at NYPL.

Now, there can be problems with this. If you do this at the
performing arts research collection, they won't let you use the
microfilm of materials from another library anywhere except in the
special collections microfilm room, which has only readers and no
printers.

But if you do the interlibrary loan through your *local* branch, you
may be able to get around this.

Talk to your local branch librarian and see if they can help you out.

Re: [Finale] printers

2006-07-05 Thread Bruce E. Clausen
Thanks for your insight on printers. I'm just starting my publishing
enterprise and am making these important preliminary decisions. I, too, am
a Musikwissenschaftler, in Beethovenstudien. My publishing, though, will be
mostly horn music, at least at the beginning. (I played professionally
before returning to university for my doctorate.) I've been hoping that I
could find an economical method of printing larger scores and parts, say
9x12, but the laser printing world only seems to go to 11x17, and the larger
formats are inkjet and therefore less stable on the page. Do you have any
other insights relevant to my dilemma? Thanks in advance!

I am not quite sure what problem you are describing. I do booklet printing
regularly, and it has very little to do with the printer itself. There are
two ways to accomplish it. For both you must first set the page setup (not
page format) for your printer to A3 (or whatever the equivalent American
format is), landscape.

Then you either enter the pages in the correct order in Finales pages to
print field in the printer dialog, or you let Finalescript do this, by
entering print booklet [verso/recto] in the direct FinaleScript command
line field.
