[Finale] Selection Tool Slow

2016-08-29 Thread Dejan Badnjar
Finale 25. Clicking with selection tool on a measure in a large score very
slow. Takes 1-2 seconds to highlight the measure. Sometime it’s fine. Very
strange. Don’t know what causes it.
Mac, El Capitan, 2560x1600 resolution. Anyone else?

Re: [Finale] invert hairpins (plugin?)

2012-08-16 Thread Dejan Badnjar
Jeff,
How are you dealing with hairpin ends when they change to a sharp point at
certain length and subsequently become longer when working in tight situations?
This has been an issue for me since 2007 I believe.

Re: [Finale] Cue staff question

2012-06-08 Thread Dejan Badnjar
Paul,
I have recently done a piece that had lots of these "cut offs" with clefs and
found that the easiest and most precise way was to add an extra measure before
the clef, hide the barline, apply staff style to the previous measures before
the clef, make the bar that has the clef change small and adjust everything
below accordingly. This way you have total control of the size of the extended
staff lines for the clef. Make the cue clef size to 100% in the document
setting so they all match with starting clefs.

Re: [Finale] Poor Resolution of Imported Graphics

2012-04-08 Thread Dejan Badnjar
I do have the full Acrobat, but still getting poor resolution of the imported
graphic (PDF in this case) when "saving as Adobe pdf". The only partial
solution is what Brian suggested, to print to PS file or "Compile PostScrip
listing" with Imported EPS only, but cannot get it to compile to a specific
trim size of 9.5 x 12.66.
As far as I know, there is no way to add a custom page size to "Compile
PostScript listing" menu, and cannot figure out a way to add one in the "Save
as PostScrip" from the Print menu. It always goes to default letter size.
How do people make good pdfs with imported graphics on the Mac???
I've been doing this on the PC forever, but cannot get it to work on the Mac.

Have you checked optimization? Whenever I have this problem it's
always due to forgetting about the interaction between group names
and optimization.

[Finale] Exploding Bug

2007-04-20 Thread Dejan Badnjar
Hi all,

Does anybody have a workaround for exploding bug in Fin 2007? Exploding would
respell the notes according to "Enharmonic Spelling" settings at the time the
notes were entered. So, if you entered a flat note with "Favor Sharps" on, Fin
2007 respells the flat to sharp. I hope that this is the proper assessment of
the problem. It has been reported on the Finale forum. PC and Mac versions
behave the same.

[Finale] Charging for Finale Work

I have just opened the font and the middle slash in tremolo still has 3
copies on top of each other. This of course causes pdf problems when you

In my opinion...YOU'LL LOVE IT!

All of the standing bug issues with trem. Markings etc. are fixed AND they
include a substitute font for Metimes called Maestro Times that uses the
same keyboard mapping as Metimes. And as an extra bonus...you can choose
from postscript and truetype fonts.

[Finale] Articulations

2006-10-30 Thread Dejan Badnjar
I was wondering what the logic behind automatic placement option for
articulations is. It clearly says auto note/stem side, but instead of placing
main symbol on the note side regardless of the note position on the staff, it
places main symbol only on the notes above the middle staff line and flipped
ones on the notes below the middle line. Is this a bug or there is something
logical about this that I am not aware? All I want is to have stem centered
staccati, marcati, etc when placed on the stem side without creating a separate
assignment. The other 2 bugs I noticed just making the articulation libraries
is when you flip the stem (with L) and you put it back to normal (again with L)
stem changes stay frozen. The other is not being able to select shape as a
flipped symbol in the articulation designer when creating new articulation.
Imported libraries work but you can't see what they are on the PC if containing
a flipped symbol, but you can see them in the Mac version.

Any ideas?

[Finale] Pdf problem

2006-09-27 Thread Dejan Badnjar
Hi all,

I have just discovered that smaller hairpins (cresc. or dim.) are extended a
little on the closed end when you "Compile Post Script Listings" in the ps
file. The closed end gets a sharp angle instead of "boxed" one, as in the
longer ones, so the closed end is touching the dynamic markings when they are
close to each other. This only happens with shorter hairpins, the longer ones
seem fine. I have to compile listings for pdf creation because of tremolo slash
bug. Apart from modifying the font that seems to be the only workaround for pdf
files with Acrobat.
I also tried different line widths, opening widths, etc., nothing seems to
work. GhostView also sees the hairpins the same way Distiller does.

Any ideas.

findings. Éric and Ansgar are so far the only two that really
understand what I was talking about when I started the thread. It is a very
simple matter. Finale SOMETIMES just erratically spaces certain measures on the
same line. Individual bars are spaced OK but the proportionality between two or
three measures is off. What you get is same note values spaced differently
between the two measures. It is mostly evident when you introduce accidentals
in the mix, but happens without them as well. From what I can see so far the
initial spacing is done OK (seen in the page view or TG tools applied Add/Remove
Space) but when Finale scales the measures to fit them on the line it gives
certain measures (combination of values, notes with accidentals, etc) more
space then others. In many cases it DOES NOT. There is no specific situation or
combination that you can pin point and show as an example. Sure you can do
manual adjustments, apply plug-ins etc., but they are never perfect. Dragging
the barline, reducing the measure width is a workaround but not a solution. Allotment
libraries simply don’t work. I don’t know why we still need them
when they introduced the scaling factor. We should be able to get very
different results by adjusting scaling factor, reference duration, minimum
space between the items, etc. Why would I have to specify the values for
Fibonacci spacing when there is the feature that should do it automatically for
me? For example, why do we get inaccurate results if we specify: Scaling factor
1.618, Reference Duration of 1 quarter and reference width of 1 space (84 evpu)
“Use default width if duration not in table” also doesn’t work
properly. And people that completely dismiss Sibelius spacing are wrong. They
had major issues with Version 1 and 2, but tremendously improved with 3 and 4. On
the other hand Music Press has a Scaling Factor and Percentage at which the
factor is applied. Excluding the problem of spacing tuplets on multiple lines
it works wonderfully.

Just my thoughts.

I agree that any situation is different and there are always a way to
make spacing look ok in Finale. But it was not Dejan's question.

We know that there are tweakings and workaround in Finale, but he was
pointing out a specific example, very relevant, where Score's music spacing was
great (in general a big strengh of Score), and Finale, Sibelius and Graphire
Music Press more of less had the same inferior spacing. Most of us will agree
that having music spacing that does not distort or alter the visual duration of
notes is something desirable. Why not hope that Finale on two consecutive
measures of sixteenth notes have them spaced more regularly? That's the point
of Dejan and I totally agree with him on this. Are there many of us that would
like default music spacing to be more beautiful?

It's strange that this debate always result in people showing their own
workarounds, thus escaping the real thread (same thing on MakeMusic's forum).

RE: [Finale] Finale's Music Spacing

2006-09-06 Thread Dejan Badnjar
Hi Johannes,

It does not solve the problem. I got the reply from MM this morning. They
completely misunderstand what I want. I've spent few days on this issue and
I am about to give up on it. Every time I try to explain what a problem is I
get a reply with workaround solution. Sure you can manually adjust the
spacing but it is very time consuming to get good results. Why should I
calculate mathematical algorithms when I have a computer? By closely
examining the spacing after manual adjustments you can see that it's still
not 100% accurate. This is very simple to understand but they choose to
ignore it. The problem is somewhere in the way Finale stretches the measure
in Page View to fill the system. The initial spacing (seen in Scroll View)
seems to ignore the "extra space for accidentals and ledger lines", but when
stretched in page view adds this extra space unproportionally to some of the
measure but not all. The result is anything but 1.618 ratio that they claim
Finale is capable off. There are simply not enough people that care about
this.

Any suggestions?

Hi Dejan,

I know exactly what you are talking about, and a few years ago I had
long exchanges with tech support about this, and although eventually
they had to give in and agreed that there is something wrong, it was
never fixed.

However, I might have a fix for you, but test yourself:

After having spaced the music, use the full TGTools, Spacing->Expand
Spacing, with a value of 0. You could also use compress spacing, I
believe, it doesn't matter.

This fixes the beat charts for some reason. I am pretty sure it fixes it
in most situations.

Try it, and if it works for you as it does for me, let us know.

I usually only apply the fix when I see a problem, however, it may well
be possible to simply apply it to the complete document.

Hi everyone,

I’ve started a discussion on the Finale Forum trying to get MM to fix the

with my assessment, send the case to MM so they listen this time. Every time I

[Finale] Articulation Selection Problem

2006-08-26 Thread Dejan Badnjar
I am not sure if this issue is isolated with my installation of Finale 2007 or
it's a bug.
Since I had problems with loading my articulation libraries last night and not
being able to see half of the symbols I started creating a new library. But
when I make articulations as "SHAPES" I am not being able to select and keep
"FLIPPED" symbol as a "SHAPE". The box stays empty not matter what I do. 2006
libraries load in OK and keep the selection but I can't see some of the symbols
in the selection window, they appear as dots. Can you gentlemen try this with
your Fin. 2007.

This works in many cases, but there is one where it is dicey, and that's
a partial-meas cue where the clef changes in the score. Consider a
cello part in bass clef where the next entrance changes to tenor clef.
In the part you want to insert a treble-clef vln cue immediately before
the change to tenor.

The staff style by itself won't work because it must be applied to whole
measures. If you apply it to the whole meas, you lose your tenor clef.
The only solution I can think of is a score-only expression, and even
then you have to hide a spurious clef change at the beginning of the
next measure.

I also had to use score-only exps to display rests on the correct line
in a partial-meas cue situation. It's time-consuming and irritating.
Cues need a great deal more attention.

RE: [Finale] Clefs in linked parts

2006-08-18 Thread Dejan Badnjar
The only problem I have that is that I don't want to start the clef change
before the barline, it should be just before the beat of the cue entrance.
(eg. 3/4 time 1/4 rest 1/4 rest clef 1/8 rest 1/8 note) I don't want to
apply stuff styles on the music that does not require it. You can not apply
the style to the part of the measure. After all, we should be able to use
different clef in the part.

You can override the clef changes in cues with a transposition staff
style. It won't actually transpose, but it will use Set to Clef. Other
clef issues can probably be resolved this way, but perhaps not all of them.

So many times I've used different clef in the score for many reasons, and
changed them in part. Main reason I have put in case submission to Coda is
because of cuing with stuff styles and clef changes. You can not apply stuff
style to partial measures, etc, etc.

Is there a solution to this:

I have an optimized score, and I cannot un-optimize. However, after
entering figures I need more space between the lowest two systems, ie I
want to set the distance between the bass staff and the viola staff to
300 EVPUs for all (optimized) systems. Is there a way to do this without
losing the optimization (ie hidden parts)?

[Finale] If I only had an option

2006-08-17 Thread Dejan Badnjar
Can you imagine if Finale 2007 had an option to draw hairpins in the Smart
Shape Tool/Tab Slide/Smart Line Designer so that you can be able to make all
instances of dynamic changes (eg. Ppp, etc) and display them in a
separate menu for selection (with metatools), applying them as Pedal markings
attached to notes. Talk about consistency and accuracy. In my long experience
with engraving scores this is where you spend most time, and more when you do
the same thing for extracted parts. I have asked Tobias years ago about this.
This should really be easy to implement. Music Press has similar feature but
with separate dynamics and hairpins.

Just a thought.
