[Finale] Question About Proper Notation

2007-12-11 Thread Jacki Barineau

Hi, Everyone...

I'm notating a song in 6/8 time and in one spot it has syncopated
rhythm, and I'm not sure which way is the proper way to notate it!
There are 4 notes in the measure, each getting 1.5 counts - would
this be portrayed with 4 dotted-eighth notes? Or would you do dotted-
eighth, 16th-tied-to-8th, dotted-eighth, 16th-tied-to-8th?

Thanks!

Thank you! That's what I thought I was hearing as I was entering

[Finale] Orchestral Notation

2006-12-02 Thread Jacki Barineau

Hi, Everyone...

I have never notated for orchestra before and have a few
questions... I'm using Finale 2007/Mac. I'm a little confused about
the transposing instruments. I've gone through the tutorial on how
to select the proper staves, etc., for each instrument. If I'm
notating, for example, a Bb Trumpet, I know this means it has to be 1
step higher than standard pitch. If I'm in the key of C, it puts the
key of D on that staff. Do I then notate as if I'm in D and think
"up" 1 step for the whole song - or is there a way to notate
everything in C and after the fact, tell Finale to switch that staff
to a Bb Trumpet staff and have it automatically reconfigure the
transposed staff for me?

When I'm playing back these staves, do they play back in standard
pitch - or in the transposed pitch? I mean - can I audition what
I've done and hear it play back properly, or is it going to sound
wrong because it's notated in D instead of C?

Lastly... I'm confused as to what the "alto" staff is for viola...?
Just not familiar with these alternate types of staves and need some
guidance!

Thanks so much for any tips!

Yes, very much.

The reason why 6/9 chord is used by specifying to omit major 7th is
because melody is root of the chord, that will produce distractive
flat
9th sound. If there is no root in the strong beat of the melody,
there

is no need to use 6/9 chord. It is more correct to say Maj 13th. In
another word, 6/9 chord notation is to tell the performer "don't dear
voice major 7th!".

Yeah, Finale construes the diagonal slash as an alternate bass. You
have to fool it into writing this suffix.

I take it you don't already have the suffix constructed, so you
will have to do this the hard way. I assume you are using Maestro
rather than JazzFont.

Chord Menu, select Manual Input.
Click on the note.
Down at the bottom of the window, you have Suffix ID, click Select
Click Create
TYpe in 6, then click Next.
Type in / then click Next.
Type in 9 then click Next.
Type in ( then click Next
Now careful. Type 11, click Number, and prefix #, then click next.
Numbers are the only thing you can enter two of at a time.

Type in ) then click Ok.
Check the suffix number, because you will need it from now on to
use this suffix more easily. It might be 83 if you haven't already
added new suffixes. Cancel your way back to the score.

Now, to enter this suffix using Type Into Score, select Type into
score from the chord menu.
Click the note. Type exactly F:83 (eff colon eight three) assuming
the suffix number is 83. Hit the space bar to move to the next note
as usual. The chord F with suffix number 83 will magically appear.
If you have forgotten the suffix number, enter zero instead, and
select the suffix from the list.

Whew!

If the specific triadic G-over-F voicing is crucial, and it's above

Thanks, Darcy... It's actually a "lead sheet" with one staff of

Hi, Everyone - I have a song where just 2 measures need layers for 3
voices. The last beat of the measure, all 3 notes are back together
rhythm-wise and I need the stems and flags to all match up again
(they're 8th notes). When I flip the stems, it's showing multiple
flags... What do you do to make this look right (have them all share
the stem and flag again)?

Thanks!

Thanks so much, Christopher for the explanation - it's weird that

Hi, Everyone - Just thought I'd update you on this. I finally called
MakeMusic's tech support to ask if there's a way to do this tie
thing. He said there isn't, but offered a work-around that did
okay. I just put in multiple slurs on that chord and then placed
them to look like the 3 notes were tied... Seems Finale should be
able to handle something as common as this, but at least that made it
look right!

It's a Cm chord (Eb, G, C) - and when I do the "shift-T" in Speedy
Entry to get my backwards repeat, it will put a tie on the bottom 2
notes (Eb and G) I'm assuming since the preceding chord also contains
these notes. But it won't put a backwards short tie on the C... In
another song, I know I made this work somehow even with NO notes (a
rest) in the preceding measure... Any clue what the problem might
be?!!! Is there a way to manually draw in a tie?!

[Finale] Another Chord Question

I knew I'd have another question as soon as I sent the last note!
It's been 23 years since I took music theory in college, and though I
remember a lot, this song interpretation is really challenging my old
brain here!! What I did is have the piano player play the song into
a midi file so I could interpret the chords he's playing and notate
the song for the composer (the piano player plays by ear only)...
What is the "rule of thumb" on when you call a chord a 9th, 11th, or
13th? I remember something about the 7th needing to be present or
otherwise you'd call it a 6th instead of 13th or an "add2" instead of
a 9th...?? This particular chord definitely has the "dominant" feel/
sound to it and is used in that way as it leads to the tonic. The
song is in Cm. This chord I'm trying to define is:

G - F - C - Eb - G - Bb

Would this be a Gm13? Or what?!!

[Finale] Lyrics Colliding

2005-06-18 Thread Jacki Barineau
Hi - I'm working on a song and even though I've chosen for it not to let
lyrics collide, they are doing so! Instead of manually having to space out
every single spot this is happening, is there some automatic way of doing
this?!

Thanks!

[Finale] Note Moving

2005-05-14 Thread Jacki Barineau
Hi - Is there an easy way to move a note or group of notes from one clef to
the other? I'm working on a piano part that's split point moved around a
lot, so I now have several notes in the treble that need to move down to the
bass. Is there some way of doing this without just deleting the note from
the treble and putting it manually into the bass?

Thanks!

Re: [Finale] Another Notation Question!

2005-04-27 Thread Jacki Barineau
Thanks a bunch, everyone, for the "bad news"! I'd rather know what's wrong
than continue to notate incorrectly! I just feel so "rusty" on all this -
it was over 20 years ago that I was in college as a composition major, and
I'm really just now getting back into serious notating! So I appreciate you
all bearing with me here...

Okay - I've revised these 2 measures and uploaded them to:

http://www.ourlittleplace.com/snapshot2.jpg

The first one, for reference is still there, too, at:

http://www.ourlittleplace.com/snapshot.jpg

Before I go any further in correcting the rest of the song, could y'all tell
me if this is correct now? The only other thing I wasn't sure about is the
beaming - when to and when not to in vocals... Seems like there's some rule
about not beaming if there are different syllables...?

And thanks for the book recommendations! I will try to get these as soon as
I can - I just have to have this particular song ready by tonight, so I
really appreciate your help with this!

- Jacki

P.S. I'm so glad that my post at least got Darcy and Christopher to agree
on something! :)

[Finale] Another Notation Question!

2005-04-26 Thread Jacki Barineau
Boy, it looks like I really stirred things up with my question about
suspended chords, etc.!! Hope this one is more straightforward!

I was wondering which is the proper way to notate syncopated rhythms for
vocals... Whether, for example, it's better to use all 16th's and tie the
syncopated notes together - or to use 16th's followed by off-the-beat
8th's...? I've taken a snapshot which shows the 2 ways I'm referring to -
Staff 1, measure 1 is showing method 2 - Staff 2 is showing method 1...
Which would be correct for vocals? And would you notate a piano (or any
other instrumental) part differently? I've uploaded the snapshot to my web
site at:

http://www.ourlittleplace.com/snapshot.jpg

Thanks!

Okay - answering my own post... I found the spot in the click options that
tells hyperscribe how fast to click... However, it is now changing tempos
right in the middle after clicking the 2 countoff measures. It starts
clicking the countoff at the tempo I told it to - then when the actual
recording begins, it speeds back up to the old original tempo that is too
fast to play to! Isn't there some way to tell it to stay at one consistent
tempo throughout the whole song (to "reset" the tempo or something)?

Oh how funny!! :)

Thanks for the explanations, everyone - I think I get it now! Basically, if
a chord has the root, third, and fifth and then an additional note - it's an
"add X"... If it's missing the 3rd and has the 4th - it's a sus or sus4.
If it's missing the 3rd and has the 2nd it's a sus2...

Is that about it?!

[Finale] Notating Suspendeds

2005-04-25 Thread Jacki Barineau
Hi, Everyone...

I was wondering what the "rule" is as far as when to call a chord a
"suspended" chord or an "add X" chord. For example, a Gsus4 - meaning G in
the root, then C, then D... I have seen this same chord sometimes labelled
as a "GaddC" or "Gadd4". Is it only referred to as the "suspended 4th" (or
2nd or whatever the case may be) if the 4th is going to resolve to the 3rd?
I personally have always called this chord a Gsus4... But now I'm notating
for a client and want to make sure I have it right!

Another question is the "9th" chord vs. the "sus2" chord or "add2"... For
example, G9 - would be G-B-D-F-A. If the F is left out, I'm assuming that's
when you'd refer to is as a "Gsus2" instead? Or is Gadd2 or GaddA also
proper terminology? I would always call this a Gsus2...??

Another similar example/question is the 6th chord. For example a C6
(C-E-G-A) - I've seen this called a C13 (since A is also the 13th!) - is
this correct - or only in certain situations - i.e., if the 7th, 9th, or
11th is also present?

Just trying to brush up on my music theory - it's been a while since I've
had to dig into this deeper stuff!

Thanks for any clarification of this!

[Finale] Rates for Notation/Transcription?

2005-04-18 Thread Jacki Barineau
Hi, Everyone - It's been a long time since I've done any notation or
transcription for people for a fee. I wondered what the "going rates" are
these days? I used to charge $10 per page 20 years ago! Is there a "per
page" rate that most people use now? What about for transcription from a CD
(figuring out the parts/notes with no draft manuscript to go by)...?

Thanks!

Thanks, Dennis - That got it! Okay - is there any easy/quick way to move
the chords to the "new" top staff?! I'd attached them to the original top
staff so now they're showing up in the 2nd staff instead of the top one! :(

[Finale] How Do You Reposition Staves?!

2005-04-13 Thread Jacki Barineau
Hey, Everyone...

Working on a time crunch here and can't seem to find this in the manual -
I'm sure I'm just not using the correct search terms - that seems to always
be my problem! What Finale calls things isn't what I would think they would
be called!

Anyway - I have a score with 3 vocal staves and a piano staff at the bottom.
I need to swap 2 of the vocal staves with each other (moving my 2nd staff to
the top and the top staff in the middle). How do you do this?!!!

Thanks!

When I've come across this type of thing it hasn't been notated, it's something you add as an improvised ornament.

Would the standard glissando mark be used for this?

One more question...!!  I’ve forgotten how to notate the notes involved in a glissando – the way it is being played is a 16th note, followed by an 8th rhythmically.  So would I just put those 2 notes as the 16th and 8th and put the gliss. between them?  Or would I put 2 8th notes with the glissando and it would be understood that the first note is quicker and the 2nd note is the one the glissando “lands” on?

Thanks again!

Thanks, Lawrence... I bet you're right about the gliss. Mark for the
"slides". So where you've seen the "bend" indication - is it just the word
"bend" itself, or is there a symbol for this?

[Finale] Notation for Recorder

2005-02-23 Thread Jacki Barineau
Hi, Everyone - I have another question about notating for alto recorder!
Does anyone know how you notate those "slides" they do - like when they hit
a low note and kind of "float" up to a higher note? Or when they hit a note
and kind of "droop" down to the next note. Don't know if I'm explaining
this right, but it's done frequently in Celtic style recorder playing! I
have an mp3 file (18 seconds) that would show what I'm talking about but I
wasn't sure if it's okay to post attachments to this list!

Thanks for any help with this! I've never notated for recorder before, so
between that and learning Finale(!) - I just figured out how to do the grace
notes, but just wasn't sure how to notate these "slide" things...

Thanks, Dennis - that was it. I'm very new to Finale, having converted
over from MOTU's "Mosaic" since they never upgraded to OS X for Mac! I'm
finding Finale not too hard to learn - but kind of difficult to find out the

I had been looking at "measure spacing" and wasn't getting anywhere. The
music spacing is the one I needed and it's now fine, thanks so much!
