Harold, Under the articulation tool, there are actually four different trill signs, including trill-to-flat, natural, and sharp upper note I tested these just now, and each one plays back differently, as I suspected. I even forced a trill-to-unison by attacking a B-natural with a trill-flat sign. If you're looking for quarter-tone trills, that's something I can't answer; hopefully this helps! I actually tried to edit the smart shape itself but did not succeed. I also tried a "Smart Playback" plugin from TGTools. I got the semitone, but the trill sounded to fast, unatural, and I couldn't figure out how to adjust the speed. Will try again today. Thank you! Thanks! It does work well, yes. I was using the trill from Smart Shapes, because you can make it last for more than one measure by extending the trill line. Apparently that is not possible with the Articulation trill, since it has no extending line. I want the trill on a note that is tied to the next measure. The (articulation) trill stops when it gets to the tied note in the following measure. I guess I could place a second trill over the tied note and hide the symbol. Is there a better way? [Finale] Trill to notes in Finale 2010?
Hi folks, I wonder if there is some more elegant way of achieving trill to notes in Finale 2010? I have used the method described in older entries: place a grace note, move it to the right of the principal note, shorten the stem of the grace note (btw isn't there a way of removing the stem rather than shortening it if I want to create a stemless note?), place parenthesis as articulations around it. I also learned from the older entries that there is (or was?) a TG Tool for this but I can't see that it shipped with Finale 2010. And if I understood it correctly, the TG tool way of doing this suffered from the same problem as when done manually: when executing a note spacing, the position of the trill to note including the parenthesis are reset to be to the left of the principal note. Hmm, I use Bill Duncan's Finale Productivity fonts, which contain parenthesised noteheads with and without sharps, flats and naturals, positioned automatically as articulations. Since I check the box in Music Spacing to take articulations into account, I get good spacing this way. Grace notes will break if you ever use them in a linked, voiced part. It's an acknowledged bug, and not very far up on the list of things to fix, apparently. I'm sure that's not the proper name for what I'm talking about. I'm in the key of B minor, and I'm trilling on a C#. The next note is an F# a fourth higher. At the end of the trill are two grace notes, a B# and a C#. These are between the trilled note and the next note. I don't know the correct name for that, but how do you get Finale (Windows 2k8, BTW) to fo that? The best I've been able to do so far is two grace notes attached to the F#. But the C# and the F# are in different measures, and the grace notes are on the wrong side of the bar line. Can anybody help with this? I'm not sure what you mean by attached to the F# I only have WinFin2006c and this is how it works there: I would do this by entering the trill as normal, then selecting the simple entry tool, clicking on the grace note symbol, clicking on the semi-quaver tool (or whatever note length you want) then simply clicking where you want them to be in the bar. Enter it as a half note. Then add the B# and C# as sixteenths, hit ; (in Speedy) to change them to grace notes, then left-arrow back and change the half note to a whole note. I don't remember who brought it up (Karen, I think? I apologize!), but I really like the idea of tr 1/2 and tr WH, which I have never seen before. It makes perfect sense to me, and is so easy, but it is not (as of yet) common practice. I understand that a tr implies trilling diatonically, but so many composers are writing chromatic scores these days that even a trill must be defined precicely every time. Unfortunately the parenthesized target note is a pain in the neck to do, even with TGTools, having to repair the parenthetical target note all the time (one more thing to forget to do when you're under the gun). In your situation the note you want it to trill to is part of the key, so there's no need to do anything. Simply writing Tr over a Gb while in the key of Ab will get you your Gb-Ab trill. -- David H. If you're in F minor, normally you don't need any trill accidental at all to get an Ab. If however there was an A natural (or sharp!) earlier in the measure, then you need a flat by the trill to cancel it--just as if it were a note. Note, btw, that you can always put in a cautionary trill accidental, just like any other cautionary accidental, by using parentheses. Tr natural would be definitely odd, as it strictly means trill to A nat, but since it is never seen in those circumstances, the player might be confused and think you meant to G nat. Those accidentals mean trill to the next upper note name, but with the alteration indicated. You can see that in the key of C concert, a clarinet trilling from D to Eb would have tr b marked in concert, but on the part (in the key of D, trill from E to Fnat) you would have to mark tr nat. One more argument in favour of transposed scores, IMHO. Chuck, Use TGTools to create a parenthesized trill note. Check the documentation for the how-to -- once you get used to it, it's great. They even play back correctly with Human Playback. I definitely like the cue note approach when in doubt. There is another convention that we use in film music when notes are changing rapidly and are all trilled. Especially where there isn't a given key and it would be extremely time consuming to put cue notes on each note. Tr 1/2 and Tr. WH are acceptable in these cases.
