[Fink-users] gimp

2003-03-31 Thread Claudio Vaccarella
I'm trying to install gimp, but fink asks for a file
mpeg_lib-1.3.1.tar.gz, that is not on the ftp server (ftp.gimp.org).
Anyone knows a workaround?
ciao,

Would be nice if ethereal could pick up the snmp libs

I'm updating from an earlier install of net-snmp.

Nope, still comes back with same error.

Is there a way to figure out to which package the file
/sw/include/netinet/tcp_var.h belongs too ?

Maybe I have to reinstall this with a more recent version of it?

The /sw/include/netinet/tcp_var.h file is timestamped on my system
at Nov 10 2002.

TIA
It would be installed by the jaguar missing headers package, as a
link to the header files installed by the dev tools. Do you have the
latest version of them? (Dec 2002 I think). Try removing the JMH
package if it's there, as the version in /sw/include/netinet may be
old...

We (jfm [EMAIL PROTECTED], Bill Fenner [EMAIL PROTECTED]
, Alexander Hansen [EMAIL PROTECTED] )
figured that also out.

If I remember well it came with 'jaguar-missing-headers' _ check
with dpkg -S.
I removed that package as soon as those headers were again in the dev-tools
(december?)
With /usr /include/netinet/tcp_var.h , net-snmp(-ssl)-5.0.7-1 built
without problems here.

JF Mertens

jfm: Your memory is excellent !

The tip from Alexander Hansen ( dpkg -S
/sw/include/netinet/tcp_var.h will tell you. ) told that the file
comes from the package jaguar-missing-headers.

I removed the jaguar-missing-headers and net-snmp compiles fine !

Now If I only could tell ethereal to use the net-snmp. The
ethereal config detects the /sw/bin/net-snmp_config, but it needs
/sw/include/net-snmp/net-snmp-config.h...
lookin into it.
OK, figured that one out, one has to explicitely install net-snmp-dev

net-snmp-dev gets build when building net-snmp, but not installed.

After installing net-snmp-dev, ethereal picks it up and compiles also fine.

Bill: can't test your jaguar-missing-headers removal via fink
install jaguar-missing-headers, because I already deleted it
manually in the meanwhile.

Thanks for all the help.

However it would appear that there are build dependencies which are

packaged as a part of kdemultimedia, or where it exists,
 kdemultimedia-dev.

Having a package such as Rosegarden in Fink would for the first time
bring fully functional open source Music software to Mac users, which
given the prominence of Macs in music production environments could
only be a good thing. The possibility of this would greatly increase,
the more of kdemultimedia-dev that could be ported. While noatun and
similar end user applications are probably not that significant, having
libraries like kmidi would be a huge advantage in porting KDE based
 audio applications.

 Any thoughts most appreciated.

Bugger.

My presumptions about runtime dependencies were incorrect anyway
however ( why every linux distribution has to rename the upstream
packages I will never understand ) so all in all it was an ill fated
project. Though I will say that the developers are extremely helpful
and were quite excited about getting RG into Fink, so if at some latter
stage it does become feasible, I suspect they will be of great
assistance.

Sadly there seem no viable alternatives to RG available: Brahms is the
only other open source sequencer / notation package that I am aware of
and it too is built on aRts / KDE, and will thus suffer the same
problems. Denemo was never intended to be anything more than a GUI for
lilypond, and would appear to have been abandoned in anycase ( last
release was in 2001 ).

Thanks for taking the time to answer and to find the previous post.

This particular problem was fixed some time ago. If you consult the fink
FAQ, Q3.17 I'm trying to install a package but fink can't download it,
you'll get advice for this general situation. It says:

The first thing you should do is run fink selfupdate-cvs. It may be that
the package maintainer has already fixed this, and you will get an updated
package description with either a more recent version or a revised download
URL.

I'm not familiar with gstreamer but according to their FAQ... no it
doesn't, although also according to their FAQ, you can write the MIDI
functionality for gstreamer if you really want ;-)

Someone on the Rosegarden list mentioned a project called PortAudio (
http://www.portaudio.com ) which is part of a wider cross platform (
Linux , Mac, Windows ) set of libraries for audio and midi. Audacity
makes use of this, but it is the only application listed on their web
site with which I was familiar. Of the various sound layers which
exist entirely in user space aRts is probably both the most
comprehensive ( audio I/O, midi, effects framework ) and the most cross
platform ( Linux, *BSD, OS X sort of... ) of those that are in wide
use. Was there any indication of what KDE would be replacing aRts
with, because, despite the difficulties it's probably the most portable
sound architecture used by opensource audio, compare aRts to ALSA for
example.

I'm a maths student, and former Java programmer who knows just enough C
and C++ to be dangerous, so I suspect that writing a coreaudio driver
is way, way beyond me, I'm still coming to grips with autoconf and
make. However to whatever extent I can help, I would like to. At the
moment however I'm not quite sure where to begin, although line 1 of
artsmidi.h or coreaudio.h are probably two reasonable guesses.

Daniel.

From what I can tell, all of the code that uses aRts in KDE (other than
the basic play PCM audio functionality they could get from esound) is
going through major bit-rot. aRts itself has sparked a major war over
it's inclusion after their adding a dependency on glib2. And while aRts
itself is portable to a bunch of places, the aRts midi code in
kdemultimedia only supports linux (and I suppose maybe some of the *BSDs
if you use the commercial OSS drivers), as far as I can tell.

I'm a maths student, and former Java programmer who knows just enough C

Well I know even less C/C++, I don't write my own code, I'm just good at
tweaking other people's code to build. :)

I'm starting to understand some of the basic concepts in this stuff, but
audio processing is a tricky beast, and I haven't even gotten to the
midi bits yet in my travels.

Re: [Fink-users] Trying to set up .tcshrc

2003-03-31 Thread Alexander Hansen
Do you have the setup that is mentioned in
/usr/share/tcsh/examples/README ? If so you'll want to put

source /sw/bin/init.csh

as a line in ~/Library/init/tcsh/path, instead. Or, better yet, put

source /sw/bin/init.csh

into ~/.cshrc, and then put

source ~/.cshrc

in ~/Library/init/tcsh/path

The problem is that your .login calls /usr/share/tcsh/examples/login,
which explicitly resets the PATH after you've called .tcshrc . Note
that you don't want just to set the PATH to include /sw/bin, because
you'll need more in your PATH, and need to set other environment
variables (e.g. MANPATH).

[Fink-users] dbi-pm and dbd-mysql-pm correctly installed?

2003-03-31 Thread Stephan Jaeger
Hiya,

I am using fink-unstable on my Jaguar-system and I installed the latest
dbi-pm and dbd-mysql-pm with fink install. (see below)

I tried to install Movable Type on my computer, but the program

Do I have to adjust some system-wide variables to announce dbd::mysql
system-wide?

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Re: [Fink-users] KDevelop update fails

2003-03-31 Thread Alexander Hansen
General note to users: it's better to put the name of the package that
is actually failing as the subject, rather than the package you are
trying to build ultimately.

Now, for your problem, I'd suggest doing another selfupdate-cvs,
because there were earlier upgrade problems with kdelibs3 that have been
solved.

[Fink-users] Problem with fink update-all - package lcms

2003-03-31 Thread Marc Baaden

Hi,

my attempts to fink update-all stop short (since yesterday)
at the following step:

curl -f -L -s -S -O http://www.littlecms.com/lcms-1.09.tar.gz
curl: (7) Connection refused
### execution of curl failed, exit code 7
Downloading the file lcms-1.09.tar.gz failed.

it loops over this, leaving either the choice to try again or
stop.

Apart from that i don't know what the problem with this
package is, how can I at least have all the others updated
without hurting the process at this first package ?

Cheers,
  Marc

Re: [Fink-users] Problem with fink update-all - package lcms

2003-03-31 Thread David R. Morrison
Sounds like the server is down... But fortunately for you, lcms was featured
in the 0.5.1 stable distribution, and for that reason its sourcefile can
also be found at
  http://us.dl.sf.net/fink/direct_download/source

Once you've grabbed the appropriate file from that directory, you store it
in /sw/src and proceed from there.

(P.S. We are working on automating this process in a future release of Fink.)

building that got fixed sometime yesterday, have you tried a

In a masterpiece of bad timing, I did the selfupdate-cvs the day before

Unfortuantely it appears you ...'d the important part. =D

There's probably an error nestled somewhere in the middle of those
warnings. Do you still have the full output? Feel free to send it to
me as an attachment, maybe we can figure it out then.

[Fink-users] simply Sawfish?

2003-03-31 Thread Kurt P. Lloyd
Hello,
I am considering using Sawfish as my window manager with Apple X11.
I was impressed with its mix of features when using it with GNOME
on Linux. But I'm not sure I want the full GNOME features on my
iBook. It seems Sawfish by itself may be sufficient. Especially
since I have the Aqua and X11 windows intermixed on the desktop.
So I installed Sawfish via Fink, and it seems to run mostly fine.
However, if I minimize a window, it disappears. Unlike with twm
or lesstif, where I'd get a little icon-like thingy I could
subsequently click on to open it back up. Is this because of a
bug? Or do I really need some additional software, like GNOME,
for handling the minimized Sawfish window?

Re: [Fink-users] libxml2, xsltproc

Can you paste the output from an attempt into a message (to make it easier
to identify the problem)?

On Tue, 1 Apr 2003, John Hurst wrote:

to download 100%, but then fail with the msg:

Is there some problem with this file?

You do. When I used Sawfish by itself on OS X, I used a very minimal
panel-like program called 'fspanel' which you may find useful. (Now I
just use Apple's quartz-wm instead).

[Fink-users] successful build of arts-1.1.1-1, qt3-3.1.2-1, and kdelibs3-ssl-3.1.1-2

2003-03-31 Thread Kow K
Great! KDE-related stuff in the subject have built successfully after a
few minor problems with dependency. I had been updating, step by step,
qt3, arts, and kdelibs3 in this order. To complete this update, I'm
building kdebase3-ssl-3.1.1-2 with its shlibs and dev packages now.
I'll let you know if this build ends successfully.

Thank you, Benjamin!

Kow

If it is of help to anyone, the specific libraries needed for
Rosegarden, compiled with arts and without alsa, jack and ladspa, are

libartsmodules, libartsmidi_idl and libartsgui_idl would be needed.
Another possibility is to get in contact with Stephane Letz
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and see if he's made any progress on a Jack MacOSX
driver. He posted to the CoreAudio list last month about working on
such a thing. It would likely end up being considerably less latent
than aRts. Having a native Jack driver would I think be more useful in
the long run...

Re: [Fink-users] good windowmanager for rootless mode ?

2003-03-31 Thread Sao X

Are there other fink-available windowmanagers that don't have these
limitations ? I am in particular looking for something lightweight
for the rootless mode. For fullscreen, I do have KDE installed :)

Hi Marc,

I posted some screenshots here:

All installed with Fink.
