You never know when they might get zinged by a stinging bug, or something out of the blue startles them. But my fjords are definitely a lot closer to bomb proof than any horse I've had before. They startle in place, for the most part, or may take a step away from what startles them. But I've never had one do a 180 on me, or rear, or shy uncontrollably sideways. The best way I can think of to desensitize him before you ride him is to go for long walks with him, into woods, by large bodies of water. Get him used to trailers, cars, trucks, planes and trains if you can. By the time you are riding him he will be "been there, done that", for the most part. Pamela

This message is from: "Sue Harrison" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I wonder if there was a digest sent out on the 11th of July. If so, I did not get it. My hubby was out riding yesterday and suddenly his horse bowed his neck...hubby looked down and there was a little skunk...all set to fire ...which he did. ROTFLMAO. Phe what a stink...got his duster, , Sundances front leg, hubbys left boot and stirrup leather, as well as part of the girth. We sprayed everything with Oxyfresh and crossed our fingers. Leaving everything out to air. Guess there are bugs everywhere! It makes for miserable riding although with our cool damp weather, the deer flies the last few days are not so bad . I don't think I would care for the centipedes. I do not mind bugs in general but hate the biting ones. Not because I am scared but I (like everyone else hate to get bit) LOL. Or crawled on! I asked the other day if Fjords are, as a rule bomb proof. any comments? Anything I can do to make mine less spooky before I begin to ride him? So far he is scared of very little. (I hope this is a natural trait of the breed?)Sue (Desert Storm's mom)

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello Remi, You've certainly come to the right place! Welcome to this list. I've learned things about fjords here that I would never have found out if I hadn't joined. A great place to go to is the NFHR website, you probably already know about it, but if not it is: www.NFHR.com You'll find barns in your area, events going on in your area and more. Pamela

Re: New to the list
This message is from: "Jean Gayle" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Remi and welcome to the list. I hope you will enjoy your young fjord. I started out with an anglo Arab with much glitz and style. Crowd pleaser etc. Then bred for and got a huge Trakehner/thoroughbred (too much thoroughbred as I aged) who was very brilliant and a judge pleaser. Then bred for and got a warm blood mare and now have my quiet fjord. Not always. My point is that after Arabs a fjord may seem pretty laid back but he can give you all the brilliance, see Wez and Anne Appleby, if you take the time to train it into him. He will be a crowd pleaser by his very appearance, lovable. New Web Site; Advertisement
This message is from: Dolph Courchaine <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Announcing a new web site www.fjordworld.com Hello all, I havent contributed recently to the list but have been listening in on all messages. A number of them, related to marketing & selling Fjords seemed to speak directly to something I have been working on over the past two months. I built the above site which offers web site building and hosting for Fjord Breeders. I did this for a couple reasons, one I wanted a place for our farm's web site and two I think more breeders should have web sites, but not have to worry about building or hosting them. Until now, for breeders that want to have a web site, there are really only two options; 1) as part of your internet service such as AOL, Geocities, etc build a site with a set of tools provided by these companys and host it on their sites. Usually this is free. You have seen these types of sites. The have long URLs and advertisements are plastered all over them. The building of the sites allows for little flexibility. 2) The other option is to find a web developer and web hosting company to build your site, register your web address (if it's available), and host the site. This is involves paying a lot of money for something that doesn't make sense to the smaller type breeding operation which most of us are. My solution, attempts to bridge this gap. I am attempting to do option number two, but to make it available to other breeders so that the costs can be spread out over a number of us. The other difference is that I am doing the web page building myself. I am an ex-computer programmer that is upgrading my computer skills by learning this html/web stuff. Unfortunately, I am not a graphic artist or marketing wiz, so the pages might seem a bit bland in comparison to the more snazzy commercial web sites. Please check it out and see what you think? Give me your comments both good & bad. I hope it's a service that will be useful. This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi everyone, I'm new to list and hope I'm posting properlyif not will someone please feel free to mail me and clue me in to the proper way. I am a long time horse owner.and first time Fjord owner as of the end of May. I lost a 1/2 Arab gelding last fallhe was replaced by a 2 year old now geldingregistered name "Prairie Duster". I'm training him from the ground now to drive and will train to ride next year. I board with a friend who has 5 Arabs and live in Michigan. I joined the list to get training tips concerning this breed and would love to know if there are any shows in Midwest area of the US. I look forward to learning through you all and hope at one point I can actually contribute some useful information. Remi
SV: Sweet itch
This message is from: "Anneli Sundkvist" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Here in Sweden, there is a company that makes turn-out blankets for horses that suffer from sweet itch. The blankets cover the horses completly and the material is a water-proof and but 'breathes'. But, is there really a way to cure sweet itch? I thought that alltough the sickness only occur in certain environments (which is the reason why sweet itch is pretty common in Icelandic horses, but there are no cases in Iceland), it is a disease that is in the horse's genes. I think that Shetland pony stallions that suffers from sweet itch will have they breeding license withdrawn here.
