He is the one I want to write about today.I bought him at an auction where a whole pony herd was sold off, most of them were in poor condition, all but two untrained, most of them were shy (even the trained ones ) .I had planned to purchase some equipement there, but when I saw all the meatbuyers ,I couldn't resist? to "rescue" one pony.I bought one that apparently previously took part in parades. He had been driven in a team. How anybody could have driven this pony in a crowd of people is a mistery to me,since he is the flightiest horse I have ever encountered. It took me a year of incredible patience and a lot of work?to gain his trust, but I would never consider him for driving . When I read about the horsesale in Waverly it shattered my illusions that stuff like this does not happen in the Fjord World .Isn't it sad that there are still people out there that think they can make a profit on animals by producing quantity instead of quality? Unless somebody has lots of time, endless patience and the necessary experience one should really think twice before purchasing a neglected ?horse at an auction,no matter how cheap he might sell for. I will be going to the auction as well, first I was going just to get a horsey weekend away, then thinking it would be fun to stop in at the Midwest mtg. as well. We'll see. Maybe I'll follow behind you Patti Jo. :> Now, we are thinking it may be a good idea to go and MAYBE bid on a couple of the horses. It is a buyers marekt currently, and it seems some of these horses, tho lately not used, may be of interest to us. After I received the Waverly list , I did notice that some of the mares will be very close to foaling and/or have young foals by their side, whci makes it risky for them to be at a sale. So, those buying, be sure you keep the newly boughts seperate from your herd at home, as they almost need to be in a quarantine of sorts after any auctin sale, just a caution from experience!! But ya'll may know all this already. As far as not bidding each other up, and being able to recognize each other, I think this is a great idea. Lynda, come up with an idea and I will wear whatever, - well, almost whatever, :> However, the healthy bidding on a good horse someone wants will still happen. Some of these may get a good price. I heard a recent auction out west, either WY or MT where a pair of geldings went for $6000. So, who's all going?? PS. Great to here the good talk about Tim from Susan G. and others, - after all, he has had ads out for his stock for a long time, so after a while I guess he needs to move them. This message is from: Jean Ernest <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Mike May, Are there going to be available supplements to the RECORD BOOK? And there must have been photos taken of all horse evaluated, you (or someone else?) must have at least the photos of those receiving reds and blue? Re: broken axis
This message is from: GAIL RUSSELL <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> If Norway does not look for this, why would that be? My guess would be that they have not "suffered the consequences" of this conformational attribute (I won't call it a defect right now, since the Norwegians, at least, do not see it as a defect.) I did a bit of research on "broken + axis + pastern" and found it does predispose horses to various nasty sounding problems, depending upon whether the axis is broken forward or broken backward. Not sure which Viktor has. Could it be that the Norwegians use their horses in such a way that the problems associated with the broken axis pastern do not really impact them? My guess is that Norwegians are not doing extensive endurance riding on Norwegian Fjords. Maybe, as Curtis pointed out, they have not really had to pay attention to this because they are using Fjords for driving, and draft for the most part (and selling to Americans :)). My guess is that the American evaluation system is going to have a serious affect on the Fjords in Norway as a result of Tim's taking Viktor to be evaluated. It is probably for the good of the Fjord, but it is too bad that Tim had to be disappointed in this way. :(. In any case, Tim should be congratulated for taking Viktor to be evaluated. I hope he gets a good price for him! Gail > >Tim was told that Norway does not look for this sort of thing and that they do >have it in several of their stock. You will see it in certain lines. This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Oh that's too funny Martie. I sure love the chat we are reading on our list lately. I was looking out the window yesterday after our girls Emily and Taffeta finished their feed. Taffy's 10 mo. old "Prins " who was gelded before 3 mo. old and weaned before 5 months old is always the last at the feed box. When he finished the girls were laying down looking so full and contented. He goes over to Mom , nudged then nibbles on her face ,ears, and head.I watched as Mom , finally Mom gets up and walks away, he then followed her and has his nose under her, looking for a little milk. Mom scolded and he left her to get what's left. Water!!! Its great to have a little one around. Tillie P/S our weather has been a little cold at night 30 to 35 and the days gets up to low 50. This message is from: "loretta reynolds" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello everyone, I figured that this might be worth a few grins... My son Jeremy left this past Wednesday morning for Parris Island in South Carolina. He is now beginning what he calls "a very long job interview" I've never quite heard joining the Marines put quite like that. Now you might be wondering what this has to do with fjords but. I decided that to show support for Jeremy, my 4 legged boy would have his mane cut Marine style. So some friends who have a great set of clippers, buzzed Duncan military style. He does look cute I have to say. Since we've had alot of tears here the last few days, I'm so grateful I have such a wonderful horse in my life. (How could he not be wonderful? weather
This message is from: bolinsj <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Weather again today! Just as we went out to feed this morning, a big gale and driving rain started. I ran for the barn (late this morning cause I was on the phone), sloshing through shin high water and frozen melt from the 28 inches of recent snow and started getting the feed together. Usually, Kilar and Wee eat on one side of the barn in two side-by-side stalls and Frida goes to the other side of the barn for her food. (Away from the brat, Wee). Today, because of the downpour, both Fjordies dove into Kilar's stall and when I put the feed in the feeders, Frida said NO way was she going back out into that rain to walk around the barn. Well, I was NOT going to grab her and LEAD her around in this mess, so I let her come across the barn aisle from one stall to the other. On the way, she grabs an unopened bale of hay and drags it along to her stall :-) . I yelled at her and she dropped it, looked at me like 'sheesh! first they feed me late, then they expect me to walk through a downpour, and NOW they're mad at me for trying to help speed things up a little! Boy Mom sure is a crab!' She's so .. Frida. Gotta love the Fjord-helpful mentality. Wow are they shedding! With all this rain, their manes are falling over again too. Guess its clipper time. Martie -looking for ANYTHING cheerful in this dreary weather.

This message is from: "Curtis Pierce" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > This message is from: GAIL RUSSELL [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Is it possible that a broken hoof axis is fixable. I gather it can be > created by poor farriery (or lack thereof). So could it be fixed? Are > you meaning to imply that he could "grow out of it"? I have seen cases of poor hoof care that looked similar to both broken hoof axis or club foot. When you look at the whole horse very closely, after awhile, you can usually tell the difference between poor hoof care and a natural defect. The signs are very subtle, but usually they are there. You have to put the whole horse into the proper perspective and not look at just each individual fault. In the case of a natural defect like broken axis or club foot, I would not use the horse in a breeding program. In both cases, the horse can still be used for performance with proper hoof care, and in some cases, you can no longer see the problem. Proper hoof care in these cases means trimming more often than normal and by a farrier that has experience with these problems. Since "form leads to function", there are qualifications in terms of what performance the horse can be used for. In this regard I remember what my German riding instructor past on to me from his father, "There is no such thing as a bad horse (conformation), only we have to find the right use (riding, driving, etc) for that horse." Therefore, although not recommended for endurance racing, a horse with these conditions is still very usable. By the way, I'm the one who bought a stallion in Norway with a stifle problem. In Solvar's case, his body was telling me that he was going though a growth spurt, and his movement and hindquarter conformation was not that far off to indicate a permanent problem. As it turned out, I have the best looking and moving gelding I have seen in a long while. Curt Pierce Bristow, VA

This message is from: "Dave & Patti Jo Walter" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I'm hoping Steve, our Vet will jump in here, I'm way over my head on this one. BUT, this is what I know. This is not something they can outgrown and I'm pretty sure it's genetic. He was NOT looking like a gangly teenager or "just" young looking. Tim was told that Norway does not look for this sort of thing and that they do have it in several of their stock. You will see it in certain lines. I believe in a past Herald they had the top stallions of Norway listed with pictures and one of them had it, they still placed him up there My feeling is, if the judges are telling you you have a problem and time, feeding, training are not gonna help it, listen to the judges, take their advice. Viktor was looking good, really good for a young 2 yr old! If it were not for this broken axis he would have gotten a red easy and most likely a blue when he matured, he's a nice looking boy. Perhaps if one of the judges would like to speak up and explain this as well as Steve as vet, that would help others understand?? Linda L. had it right when she said this must be really hard on him. lets not judge, but rather pray for blessings on him and his horses!! Janne in 20 below and cabin fever!!!
