Years ago, I got one thru Libertyville Saddle Shop's catalog. It was
made in S.Korea, and took quite a while to arrive (backordered at the
manufacturer). I had also tried to order it thru a local tack shop,
which also had it backordered. FWIW, the local shop "lost track of"
my order, but Libertyville not only kept it in their system, they also
occasionally sent me post card updates, inquiring if I still wanted
the item!

I got the impression that the manufacturer only tools up to produce
some of the "unusual sizes" of bits when there are enough orders in
the queue to make it worth their while. Granted, that was before all
the Warmblood craze set it---6" bits may be more standardly available,
now.

Good luck!

It's also sunny here, 46*. The grass is green, and the feral
daffodils are blooming. They may regret that decision, as the
forecast is for a few nights of lows in the 20's later this week!

I will be going to the Winona Facility this week end while attending the
MWFHC Winter Meeting and looking closely at the facilities for all the
stallions. I will be sending out the 2nd information packet after I get
back.

Thank you for your patience. With over 35 stallions coming it's important

Re: Breeding to Gjest - Consignment horses to Beaver Dam Farm - Opportunities for Interns or "HIP" Program

2006-02-14 Thread Beaver Dam Farm
This message is from: "Beaver Dam Farm" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi Everybody from Carol Rivoire at Beaver Dam Farm in Nova Scotia --

Gjest still looks good. I can see him cantering in his pasture as I type.
He's healthy and sound. No visible problems, except we have to face up to
the fact he's getting old. -- No, I guess at age 29, he is chronologically
old. -- But, young at heart. We're planning on breeding him to all our
mares this Spring. There are also three outside mares booked. -- If
you're interested in breeding to a spectacular stallion, please get in
touch with us. -- If you want to know what Gjest produces, just take a
look at our Sale Page at the 5 fillies born last Spring, and at the other
Gjest offspring - BDF Nora, BDF Philippine, BDF Quest, BDF Titan.
Here is a link to some great photos of these horses -
http://www.beaverdamfarm.com/pages/horses-for-sale/horses-for-sale.htm.
We don't usually offer Gjest's services to outside mares, but we've decided
to this year because of his age. --

A highly respected Norwegian judge by the name of David Klove once said . .
. "Gjest is such a good stallion that he should be bred to as many mares as
possible in America." - This year may be your last chance to breed to a
legendary stallion. --

If you decide to send Gjest a mare for breeding, you might want to have your
mare trained while she's here. If she already has some training, we'll
improve her. If not, we'll put some good training on her, and depending on
how long you leave her with us, we'll return you a very pleasant horse. --
Any outside horses coming to BDF must have a Coggins within 6 months, and an
International Health Certificate within 30 days of coming to Nova
Scotia. -- We also require that the horse has been vaccinated for whatever
is necessary in the area you live.

~

We have room for a few more very good Fjords to sell in our consignment
program. -- We're serious about only taking high quality horses. But,
please if you do have a horse you're interested in placing in our
consignment program, and are not sure how good he is, do talk to us about
him. -- It's possible that you have an exceptionally good horse, and don't
realize it. -- This has happened before. -- One of the best horses we
ever had was a Gjest daughter. She was a 7 yr. old, and I'd seen her
advertised in the Yankee Pedlar for about a year. Advertised at a low
price, I might add. -- This was in New England, and I happened to be there
visiting my mother, so I went to see the mare. -- One look was all I
needed. This was a wonderful horse. -- The owner decided to send her to
us, and she sold inside of two weeks. She sold to one of our old customers
who heard through the grapevine that we had this horse. This lady called
us, and bought her on the spot. In fact, another old customer also heard we
had this mare, and she called and offered even more for the horse. -- Of
course, we honored our word to the woman who got to us first. -

We've noticed recently several breeders who are proclaiming that they are
NOT BROKERS. They say they don't sell other people's horses. They just
sell their own horses, ones they've trained themselves. --

Well, I don't think any of us at Beaver Dam Farm have ever thought of
ourselves as brokers, but perhaps we are. -- In any case, we're extremely
proud of the job we do for people who send us horses on consignment. We
find their beloved horses a proper home, and we send the owners a
nice check. -- They sure are pleased as evidenced by the letters
and emails we get from them. -- It's a win/win situation for the former
owners -- the new owners who also send us letters and emails about their
wonderful new horse from Beaver Dam Farm --- and it's great for the horses
who go to a really good home.

As to being "brokers" . . . If we are brokers, although I've always thought
of us as "agents" . . . . whatever, it makes no difference, because once a
new horse comes to Beaver Dam Farm, he might as well be one of our own
horses, because that's exactly the way he gets trained, loved, cared for,
and promoted for sale. -- We really make no differentiation between our own
horses and those owned by our customers. - They're all Fjords, and they're
all much loved and appreciated.

~

We have room for two more interns for this summer. -- So far we have two
American girls confirmed, one from England, Holland, and one from Germany.
It's shaping up to be a very nice group. -- To find out more about our
Internship program, please go to our website and click on this link to the
Internship Page.
http://www.beaverdamfarm.com/pages/intern-program/index.html
This year the girls range in age from 14 - 20. We don't normally accept
girls as young as 14 in the Internship Program, but this 14-yr-old is quite
special. She's Maggie Sullivan, daughter of Ann & Ed Sullivan, owners of
Riena and Maryke. -- Maggi

This message is from: "Joe Glick" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

In my opinion the Bitless Bridle has it's place, just like any bit does.
Whether using a bit or going bitless the user must know how and when to use
them. I have used a bitless bridle on two different horses, both Fjords, with
very good results. In both cases the horse was in early stages of training and
they didn't respect the bit very well. Rather than going to a harsher bit I
went with the bitless bridle. A bit, no matter how mild, can cause the mouth
to get sore if used incorrectly. Once the horse has a sore mouth they can
become very hard to control because it irritates them. Going with a harsher
bit only makes the problem worse. I am currently using the Bitless Bridle on
Sivert, a stallion I bought from Lynda Welsh at Bailey's. When I got him he
had issues with respect. I've been riding him for a month now and he is doing
great. I started out with a bit and then switched to the bitless when he
didn't respond to the bit as well as I would have liked.

Actually, I have plans to take Sivert to the Horse Expo in Harrisburg, PA on
Feb 24-25. My plans are to do a demonstration of the Bitless Bridle with
Sivert. So you can come and see for yourself if the Bitless Bridle works.

Gelding Wanted

2006-02-14 Thread ChampionPonies
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I just thought I'd post this - a therapeutic riding program in the Bay Area
is looking to retire one of their older geldings, and so needs a new Fjord to
replace him.

The pony they'd be replacing is 13.3, short-backed, with clean gaits.
He's strong-willed, but puts up with EVERYTHING. For example, he doesn't mind
if he's got a wriggly rider on his back, he's worn outrageous costumes,
etc., etc.

They've had some bad luck with "marish" mares, so they really would
prefer a  gelding.  Bombproof, of course, with the ideal age being 8-16;
younger
isn't such an issue (their geldings started at four and five), as long as
they were trained enough to start in with lessons upon arrival. Obviously
it'd
have to be healthy and sound, and get along with other horses (they live in
a pasture). Also, I'm fairly certain they'd want a trial period.

Price-wise, they're a non-profit so obviously they don't have a ton to
spend, but they're not looking for a full donation.

So, if anyone knows of a gelding that might fit please e-mail, thanks!

I just got in from an interview with channel 8 news here in CT. They are
doing a piece on rescue horses. They came to see my Fjiona and Loki. Fjiona
is my PMU mare. Loki is her son. (both pure Fjord)

In true Fjord fashion Loki would not leave the reporter and camera man alone.
His nose is to the camera more than anything. He also kept trying to get the
camera man to play with him. Fjiona did what she does best. Ate cookies and
hay. That will change soon. She is going to Briar Hill Farm in two weeks to
learn how to drive and ride.

We will be on TV Thursday night at eleven. I can hardly wait to see how it
turns out.

Re: midwest disease update

2006-02-14 Thread Curt
This message is from: Curt <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi, Please be careful when posting about outbreaks of neurological rhino.
This form of EHV-1 has been around for a long time. It is sporatic and can be
found where ever there are horses. There is no known reason why this form of
EHV-1 effects the neurological system, but when it does, the first few horses
are not usually discovered before the disease is spread by the handlers to
other horses. Not all horses die from this, but most do. Also, not all horses
at a facility with an active case will be affected by the disease. It has
never been recorded where more than one farm in a local area is affected by
neurological rhino at the same time. It is correct that there is no vaccine
for this form of EHV-1.

In almost all cases, the vets can not trace how the disease got to the facility
where it is active. Usually, by the time it is confirmed to be neurological
rhino at a facility, all the suspected horses have been isolated and better
horse handling practices have been put into effect to prevent the disease from
spreading in the barn. So, unless something radically changes, there should be
no fear about traveling with or without your horses in the east or midwest due
to neurological rhino. If you have any concerns about any outbreaks of any
diseases that may affect your horse, you should contact the State Veterinarian
in the state where you are traveling. The State Vet Office will provide you
with specific information about any disease outbreaks and travel restrictions
in that state.
Regards,
Curt Pierce
Mathias, WV
PS. We got 12 inches of snow on Saturday, so the Fjords thought that winter is
finally here. It will be in the 50s by Wednesday.
