East facing Fjords...
This message is from: Jeanne Zuker [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have watched Monty the past few days, here are my observations: He faces east to 'watch for me' since I come out that way to feed him, etc., also my drive is to the east so I come home that way. That said he also watches to the north if the deer, wild turkeys or geese are out in the fields, or if my neighbors are out. He faces the south again if the deer are passing that way or again any neighbors are out...he think of all humans as thinking he needs food! He faces the west to watch the woods and for shade or wind break, so what I have observed from him is he doesn't have any favorite direction unless food is involved! :)) He is very observant and watches for the school bus, trash pick up, cars, mail carrier, propane delivery, cars passing on the road, dogs running outside, any wildlife. One interesting thing I remember from last summer. We had a pallet place burning. It started in the early afternoon, it is approx. 13 miles from us, I watched him that particular afternoon, way before the fire was on the news, I noticed he kept watching to the north, he would raise his head and smell and jog around the pasture, but would always return to the same place. I got concerned and went out, at the time I could neither see or smell the fire, but later as it got dark, OMG, the entire sky was bright with the orange glow and you could see the flames! The smell was not something I detected easily, but I know he could detect the fire from that far away hours before I could see it...as it burned, we could see the smoke. I now watch him for any changes in his behavior, he is my barometer, and I have found if I look closely at the direction he is looking, I can ususally find whatever it is he is looking at. Jeanne and Monty who is enjoying the 33 degrees today. Sunday the high is supposed to be 5 degrees with wind gusts of 50 mph. The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw

RE: fjord type color discussion
This message is from: kate charboneau [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thank you for this Excellent post! I really appreciate the education specific to Fjords I get on this list. I had noticed my Fred's dark spot with a single hair on his jaw; I was always just a bit uneasy about this odd marking. Now I can reframe my thinking on that. Thanks. We have Clydes that we completely adore. But due to size they are really more my hubby's. It's just miserable for me to groom harness them alone. They really are a better, more fully able draft than my Fjord. But I eagerly choose my Fjord over them due to height. He is becoming such a nice pleasure driving horse; he fits my driving needs to a T. I have a wonderful AQHA that is teaching me so much about riding. He's handing me riding confidence with a big red bow on top. I bought him to bring my confidence and skills up to speed so I'd be a better partner for my Fjord. I will forever be grateful to him. But I choose my Fjord for his drafty temperment, his easy height, and his ability to be both my carriage horse and my riding horse. The Norwegians some time ago were asked to present a picture representing what they believed to be the true Fjord horse. The picture they presented was a photo circ 1890 by K.A. Aamin. It shows Njal #166 and Kare #189 two stallions of the time. This photo was presented in Norway during the 1996 International Fjord Horse Judges Seminar. Jean was talking about tracing back the lineage on white duns to specific Fjords of the past. If you go out and look at your Fjords facial markings you may see a small brown marking on the jaw, sometimes with a single hair coming from it. This is called a Njal marking tracing back to the stallion Njal mentioned above. The Fjord of today is more balanced proportionally and has retained its most important characteristic---temperament! There are folks who wish to change the Fjord for something better? I am supportive of keeping the Fjord the way it is. Example-- If you changed the Fjord to only a driving horse it would loose. There are better driving horses out there! If you changed the Fjord to only a riding horse it would loose. There are better riding horses out there! If you changed the Fjord to only a draft horse it would loose. There are better draft horses out there What makes the Fjord absolutely unique is its wonderful temperament combined with the versatility of all three separate disciplines. Let us keep it the way it is, honoring the traditional body types and colors! _ Climb to the top of the charts! This message is from: Linda Lottie [EMAIL PROTECTED] Jeanne..I too watch my horses to help me keep an eye on things. Mine love to stand by the barn, facing south west to watch for deer. Often there are deer in the pasture grazing or sneaking under the fence. My property butts up to two other pastures of neighboring horses. Often, the horses from each farm meet in the three corners area and either take a nap or just hang out. ( 11-15 head). My neighbor and I laugh and say they are having coffee time :) In three years there has never been an incident in that corner.just hangin' out. Such good ponies:) LJLB in WI..snowing and it is beautiful From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: fjordhorse@angus.mystery.com Subject: East facing Fjords... Re: white duns, again
This message is from: ruth bushnell [EMAIL PROTECTED] This message is from: Jean Ernest In looking up the pedigrees of all the white duns in the NFHR I noticed that every one of them traced back (to two) Also very interesting is the increasing popularity of the white and yellow duns Just a comment on the changing ideas. Jean THAT IS A VERY interesting connection for color you point out, and an astute observationon trends from a longtime Fjord person, thanks Jean.I am not a color genetics evolutionary expert, Jamie's the pro in that department, but as a population genetics scholar I believe it is a very good thing that we have white Fjords down to this day, same as the inherited Njal mark. Both inheritable occurences are visual marker indications for the authenticity of having two original lineage bloodlines remaining in the breed. There are no doubt more, but none we can identify without DNA mapping. Maintaining original bloodlines on down through the Fjord genome is vital toward preserving genetic purity, and avoiding genetic drift. It would be a great loss if the breed no longer had the white marker, or the Njal marker, because that would mean that both of those particular bloodlines were gone from the gene pool, never to be recaptured, and all the wonderful other characteristics that went along with them. By the same token, if either of those markers became overly prevalent, that would indicate they were crowding out other unidentifiable bloodlines, through artificial selection. (diminished genetic diversity) Since we don't yet have DNA mapping in the Fjord genome, we are fortunate to have at least two visual markers for bloodlines that we can observe. Yes, interesting stuff, Jean. Ruthie, nw mt US The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw

This message is from: jgayle [EMAIL PROTECTED] Jeannie, I am at a dead end road with only houses. Now that the building boom is over I am no longer approached re breaking up the acres. So Gunnar has no horses to commune with. He will lighten up in the Spring when the friends bring their Minis back for pasture. But he still faces East. This message is from: jgayle [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sounds so peaceful and beautiful having the horses friendly and the deer. I think our Mexican visitors have taken down our deer population. Have not seen one in three years. Everyone was building high fences etc to keep them out of the gardens. Saw a Mexican's truck, stopped by the sheriff, with at least six dead deer in the back. I am sure they did not know it was illegal. Gunnar is lonely, no doubt. Last of the horses I have had. Your snow must be beautiful. We have had some twice but mostly wind and the darn rain. The mountains are too full of snow with avalanches. Ah summer.
