Hello Kate

I feed very wet beet pulp year round. It is a great way to make sure that
your horse gets more liquids in either hot or cold weather when they are
more likely to drink less. Since I have done this for many years now. I
have
not had any colic's related to not drinking. And yes they love it. If the
horse is too fat use it to replace the hay that they would normally eat.
If too thin add more and they will gain easily. If they eat grain too fast
use it to mix with it. As it does slow them down. I have not had any horses
inhale it. Most take more time and try to chew it. It really is a very
good feed choice for many different horses. The amount of water it absorbs
is enormous .

Colic advice

2008-06-12 Thread KateSeidel

What a month for the best ponies ever! Joe's lameness at the start of May
turned out to be a severe abscess, which eventually blew out of his coronary
band. Looks like he is going to be lame for a few months while he grows some
new hoof wall.

On Monday, Della Ree started to colic (our temps shot up to the 100's and
apparently she stopped drinking water). She had a very hard large colon
impaction and did not respond to oil, water and walking, so off we went to the
equine hospital. Three days and many, many liters of IV fluids later, she is
home and resting comfortably - although she says she is very very hungry and
is
not really satisfied with the tiny amounts of hay and grass she is allowed to
eat. I was horrified and amazed at just how much fecal material she had
managed to pack into her colon. She basically went almost 4 days without
eating, and once things started breaking up, there were buckets.

This is my first experience with this severe colic, and don't ever want to
go through this again. I may add a bit of oil to their daily feed.

She has a week of reduced rations - but I neglected to ask the vet how long
I should wait before starting to exercise her again?

Hi,

Sorta funny update about my new (pasture) electric fence and the
fence-checker.

My Nigerian dwarf goat wether, Gunner, jumped the paddock fence earlier this
week. This caused me to wonder if the electric fence, now including the new
pasture fence, was charged or not, given that Gunner has never jumped the
paddock fence since it was electrified last fall. I hadn't gotten a
fence-checker yet, so I decided to give the Old Farmer Trick a try. I
wetted a wide blade of grass and tentatively approached the wire, waiting
for those pulses of electricity to flow up my arm. I never felt a thing. I
was still not going to touch the wire with my bare hand, so off I went to
TSC for my fence-checker. It has multiple lights to gradate the voltage, up
to 5500 volts plus. All of them lit up when I tested the wire at a couple
of locations. Guess I have enough juice.

Bonnie, that was great and you were great. That boy has found out there are
good people around him. Yes no rain in western Washington even some sun
coming. Aren't we blessed? Jean Gayle, whose old Gunnar is miffed because
everyone comes to see the minis in the field.

The Fjord show and tell

2008-06-12 Thread MorrisShadowMT
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This is such a cute story that I have to tell it.

I have a young boy 7th grader that looks more like a 2nd or 3rd grader
very small. He showed up one day last year and went on and on about how much
he loved horses and wanted to know what work he could do for lessons. I get
this a lot, so it becomes hard to figure out a way to tell them that I have
enough help and not to spoil their enthusiasm. His mom came by one day and
purchase a set of lessons for him. He was so excited, that I don't think
that he stopped talking long enough for me to get even one word in. :0)He
proceeded to tell me all about his family and brothers and sisters and how he
was a foster child and that he finally got adopted and that his mother was on
some really bad drugs when she had him and that was why he was so small and
blind in one eye. He comes by on a regular basis wanting to help and
always brings some sort of treat and a very happy smile. He loves the Fjords
and
last week he wanted to know if I could bring one to his school, because he
was doing a report on them. Well today was his big day he called and left me
2 messages yesterday and 3 more before I even woke up this morning to remind
me. He also wanted to know if I could bring the music that I play when I
work her (Now I need to install a stereo system on the cart so we can play our
theme music)! So I go and hitch up Yolina and off we head to his school
which by horse, and carriage is about 15 min away. We pull in the driveway
and
of course every kid runs to the windows of their class waving.I wait a
couple of minutes and he comes out with his class. This is his presentation
and he is supposed to give it and explain about Fjords. In his excitement he
completely forgets what is supposed to say:0) So I ask the kids if they
have any questions. Well every hand went up! From how do I dye the mane
to
look like that to what do they eat!
I thought back to when I was his age and it would have been a dream
come true to have someone do what I just did. What a great day.

We then zipped home thur the woods. Much much nicer than the city streets.

Bonnie Morris

Finally stopped raining in Western Washington
