Elise
This message is from: laura fisher This is the second day Elise has had her very own stall next to the other horses. We fianally got a stall empty of another neighbors' horse so Elise was rigged up in the arena--but now she is SOOhappy! Today we had out first bad rain storm so we kept the horses in, there is a lot of wind that blows branches etc. Anyway, my husband went to feed the horses and had to laugh when he noticed that all of our other horses( but not Elise) were looking out at the weather, wet to their shoulders but their behinds nice and dry ...and there is Elise just the opposite with her butt and body completely out in the storm and only her head in the dry stall! go figure ? ;) Laura _ Your E-mail and More On-the-Go. RE: fjordhorse-digest V2009 #195 ground movement
This message is from: laura fisher I try to check out how my horse is feeling and develop flexibility while on the ground, but I have never been able to get a horse to REALLY move one front foot over another while the hind foot pivots, in fact, I get the two- the phrases: "move on hindquarters"- "move off forefeet" (whatever...) mixed up? see? I don't even know what to call it. I am a teeny bit dyslexic and get the two mixed up even though I go over it in books. I never had a trainer who would teach me ground movements I had to learn from books, I don't think that works as well... So if anyone can tell me how to approach the horse to move the front hooves please let me know. My sweet fjord is not very quick on her toes when it comes to ground movement. I have to know where to specifically push and PUSH! once she gets it then it all starts to go together. :) > Date: Tue, 13 Oct 2009 18:58:13 -0700 > From: cavy_l...@yahoo.com > Subject: Re: fjordhorse-digest V2009 #195 > To: fjordhorse@angus.mystery.com > > This message is from: Heather Baskey > > Absolutely! Re: Heather emerg dismount
This message is from: Heather Baskey Yes - one rein stops do work at the canter - you just have to be on the correct lead when you do it ;-) Emergency dismount all begins with the one-rein stop. Disengagement of hindquarters. If you stopped with your left rein, then push the pommel (or withers) with your right hand) to gain lift out of the seat (both feet OUT of stirrups) and dismount to left side (dismounting to the side in which rein you used in the one-rein stop). Turn to face horse and lead backwards. Practice from both sides (right and left). One side is always easier than the other ;-) I do have a video clip of me doing it while Henry was in training - but it's horribly embarrasing due to my lack of physical fitness at the moment! Heather (who's every muscle from waist down is burning and aching). Could Heather try to discribe emergency dismount? Thank heavens I have an English saddle or I'd be hangin' from the horn no doubt:) Tonja Acker-Richards Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw Classified Ads: http://tinyurl.com/5b5g2f
Re: fjordhorse-digest V2009 #194 any horse is
This message is from: "Jo Wilgus" Any horse whatever breed is capable of unacceptable behavior. I grew up on a Shetland they were famous for running away. Learned real quick that"emergency whoa." . Proper training is the key to reducing any unacceptable behavior and even then there are accidents. I will say this, I am happier riding my Fjord than any of the other breeds I have owned. I believe the Fjord is a kinder, gentler horse. They are also highly intelligent so without a knowledgable human I can see where a bad behavior could arise. I know many good riders who would have a much better ride on a Fjord then the horse they are currently riding. Makes me all the more appreciative. Also anyone purchasing a Fjord who buys from a reputable breeder will get the scoop on the mindset of the Fjord. Off to talk to Regn and Duffers. Enjoy your day. This message is from: Lori Albrough I would be careful making such a statement, the worst runaways that I have seen were with Fjords. Jerry Friz, I agree. Although I'm sure we're all quite enamoured of Fjords, they are still just horses and share the same qualities of horses, including the fact that each one is an individual (just because they "look alike" doesn't mean they act alike). Let's not let breed hype take over common sense and end up leading newcomers to believe things that can't possibly be true (like "anyone can train a Fjord" or "anyone will be safe on any Fjord"). Re: water drops
This message is from: Sarah Donchi Funny reading everyone's stories about rolling in water. I have a horse who LOVES water. He will splash or roll in a mud puddle, lake, on the beach, in a river...and he loves to go running/splashing through puddles. I admit, I will unwisely let him roll when he's not wearing a saddle because I think it's cute and he has such a good time, but I sure have to be careful when riding through water. My biggest problem is that I get dizzy when crossing moving water, so I have a hard time getting him moving while trying to hold on myself, LOL. --- On Thu, 10/8/09, fjordhorse-digest wrote: Date: Thu, 8 Oct 2009 00:19:03 EDT From: pedfjo...@aol.com Subject: water drops This message is from: pedfjo...@aol.com Totally agree with Deeana about the pawing first. It USUALLY means to get movingNOW ! when in water. Jeffs horse, Brandy gave no warning. He would sometimes get those " weak knees " when walking through deep sand or entering a turn-out area, but often he would drop like a shot in shallow or deep water. When living in CA. we had the trail system through the Norco riverbeds. It was always an adventure between the soft deep sand, the river itself, the wild pigs who used to jump out squeeling at the very worst time.the heavy bamboo that you had to lay down over the top of your saddle to get through, and the inmates from the local prison whos crews you would run into trying to cut back that bamboo and keep the trail system open. Re: Runaways
This message is from: Heather Baskey Something that I don't see often when people work with horses (at several barns that I have been at) is emergency stops/dismount techniques. Why wait until something happens to test if it works? Each and every time that I mount Henry, I practice lateral flexion and then disengagement of his hindquarters. Throughout our workout (whatever it may be), I practice one-rein stops at a walk/trot (not confident enough to do at a canter - emotional fitness for "me" to work on). Once a week, I always practice an emergency dismount (reinforcement of steps to take - the more I do it, the more natural for me it will become). I could never think of just saddling up and going off for a ride, without doing my "pre-flight checks" in case the inevitable happens! Interestingly enough, I was auditing a clinic with riders who had "years" of experience. When the Clinician asked if they would "bet their life" on a one-rein stop - not one single person put up their hand. Heather __ Looking for the perfect gift?
