Fjord List

Hi All,
The old saying, “use it or lose it” is pretty much true... As Ron said,
it would be good if someone else could step in and take over, but, it really
takes a special kind of a person, with a lot of talent. Times are changing,
what's next after Facebook??

I have been a member of the CDL,[combined driving list] for some 15 years.
This list has not fallen to Facebook,yet... Mayb,, the members are a little
older, I don’t know. But, it has slowed somewhat. I think a lot of it is
due to the higher costs of owning a horse.. There seems to be a lot of horses,
and carriages for sale. Many shows have shutdown. Look at what happened at
Libby.

Fewer young people with horse related interests replacing us old people.

Still hoping you will reconsider keeping the list going for awhile longer. I
might have missed a post or two, but I never saw one request by anyone asking
you to reconsider.
If a donation would help, like Fred suggested I certainly would be willing.
I donate $5 dollars to Wikipedia every year,, which I use a lot, a great
source of information.

Thanks again Steve,
Regards,
Jerry in the PNW

Hi Steve,
This is the first message about shutting the list down that I have
received It looks like a lot of messages don't go through, I thought it
was just me, or, my server.

Hope you will reconsider keeping it going.
I know Facebook has a lot to do with it, myself I don't like Facebook, and
don't use it

Thanks for the list over years, Steve.
Merry Christmas to you and all!!!

Thanks for the offer, Fred. No, I am not burned out, but it appears
the

concept of an email discussion list is. The novelty or perhaps the
immediacy of Facebook seems to make the idea of communicating via email
just too old fashioned to interest people. The traffic has dwindled to
barely a trickle as has what I see on your list also. I've simply decided
that fighting the tide of the new "social media" is insane, and though I
will miss the folks and discussions here it is time to face the inevitable.

Hi and List,
I believe, [could be wrong though] the court did rule in favor of the
fishermen. But, Exxon was able to appeal it, and that is where it sits now.
Yes, waiting for the poor fishermen to die off.

I too will never buy Exxon products, if I run out of gas I'll walk.
Jerry in NW Wa.

-

Several of you have asked about the back-story of Chip and Exxon. Here
goes. For many years Chip fished commercially in the waters of Prince
William Sound in Alaska. Then the Exxon Valdez ran aground and destroyed
the fishing putting Chip and a lot of the other small fisherman out of
business. Exxon has never compensated them for their losses. Exxon has
settled with the State of Alaska and paid fines to the Federal Government
but never settled with the fisherman that lost everything. That case is
still winding its way through the court system and Exxon and their high
priced lawyers keep getting it put off so it never goes before a judge so
the fisherman can be compensated fairly. Exxon is using stalling tactics
figuring that eventually these people will die and or they end up waiting so
long that they will settle for pennies on the dollars of what they are owed.
Every few years you read something about the case finally coming to court
and again it gets put off.

Hi Cindy,
Sorry was not able to get back to you.
My gelding is right at 14.1 hands.
He rides, and drives. He has done about 10 CDE's mostly at the preliminary
level.

It sounds like he would fit your bill.
I would like to get $2,000. Although he is pure Fjord, I never had him
registered. I was the breeder at the time. He was my last foal. I do
believe he can still be registered, although, if this is a requirement, you
would want to check with the registry to make sure.

I got to the point, where a gelding doesn't really matter. If he was to
stay a stallion, or, a mare, then I would have registered him.

But, since we are so far apart, it would be difficult for you to see him.

Thank you for checking,

Hi.

I'm looking for a Fjord, and I'm going to be at the Fjord Friends and Fun
Fest on Tuesday, June 19.

I'm looking for a horse who is safe for an intermediate, older rider, not
spooky, loves humans, and will canter under saddle. I really want a
sweetheart horse who wants to be doted on. I plan to do a little trail
riding, a little dressage, and a little natural horsemanship. I don't
intend to show, breed, drive, or jump. I'm 5'6 and weigh 155, so I
probably don't want a horse under 14 hands. To the best of my ability, I
intend for this to be a forever home.

If you have a horse like this and are going to the , I'd really like
to hear from you!

Hi Folks,
Thought I better add a little more information here.

I have known the Cox family for many years.
Margy, and John, bought a horse adventure trip with me, some 25 years ago.
I was doing one week trips in the Alaska wilderness then.

Lindsey, was about 1 year old when I first met them in the Seattle area.
Margy, had a first class carriage business, She even did Bill Gates, 40th
birthday, using Devon. I also had a carriage business in Alaska, but not
the level as hers.

Devon, is 24 years old now, and has been in retirement for a couple of
years. He, came out of retirement for this show. Devon, was bought from
Chip Lamb, of Sandpoint, Id. as a 3 year old gelding.
He was one of the best Fjords that I ever worked with. I competed many
times against them, always came in a second behind them.

Margy, helped me get started in combined driving. We navigated for each
other many times over the years.
Margy, is an Advanced active driver, in fact, just finishing the Little
Everglades CDE yesterday.

I really don't watch the Bachelor, except for this episode, because I knew
what was going on. It will be on again tonight at 8pm PST, ABC.

This just might give her,[Lindsey] an opportunity to become a great movie
actress, and of course she will be riding, driving, vaulting, etc. with
horses.

In case you missed it, or want to see last weeks episode, [Devon] you can

For my ownself, I’d not have an animal rug or blanket or animal head on my
wall. But I do ride in a leather saddle, and I prefer leather harness for
driving. I also wear a pair of leather shoes as they are wide and I need
wide
and can’t find a synthetic riding shoe that is comfortable for my
arthritus

foot.

And I don’t eat meat, nada even fish or chicken. When I tell people I
don’t eat meat, they always say, “what about fish, chicken”. I
don’t

share usually, it just comes up as I’m offered dishes with meat or if I go
somewhere to eat, I have to ask if there is “meat” in the way of chicken
stock, like some soups.
I don’t care if anyone else eats it, just not in my house or in the car
with

me.
Its my choice, for my own personal reasons, to not eat meat/muscle. I do
eat

cheese some, I don’t eat eggs, but I do eat cakes and slice and bake
cookies, which would have eggs in them. My daughter is pretty much vegan.
And no leather anything.

I am against animal slaughter for meat. I guess if there were a vote to ban
eating meat, you’d know what side I’d be on. But I won’t throw names
or

call meat eaters killers/murderers. Its my choice, my right, your choice,
your right. Just wish we could have good open minded discussions without it
becoming “political”. FWIW, when I lost my Herbie and Langster, I
washed

and braided their tails and cut them off before they “left” me. Had
Herbies for 3 yrs., the plan was to make a bracelet, band for a hat. But I
can’t seem to part with his/their tails. I have my old horses forelock
too. And his and Langsters ashes. One can have them cremated too. A bit
pricey, but its an option that I chose.

As far as the registry. I think if doing a DNA test proves this horse is
indeed a full breed fjord, then there should be someplace on the registry
for
this horse, even if separate from those proven and registered. As far as
the

mention of geldings being registered...the little guys weren’t born
geldings. And even so, they have “mom” and “dad”, and all had to
still be DNA tested. Was a lot of paperwork and cost to get my Ynde reg.
when

she was born.

I don’t think it right for a non proven horse because he looks like a
fjord

to be registered, without some positive proof. That’s my own opinion of
which I’m allowed.

Hi Folks,

I learned about a type of fencing called New Zeeland Do a Google search
and get the details. I have used it for 8 years in Ca. where it is bone dry
in the Summer. It is the safest, strongest, and most cost effective that I
know of. It only requires a small charger.
You use up to nine wires, five that are hot, the rest are grounds.[every
other wire is hot] I place my main ground near a water tank, where the
ground is always wet from over flowing water, etc. I use one stand of the
1 white electro-tape at the top for visibility, to stop a jumper.

The bottom wire should be about 18-20 inches off the ground for a 14-15h
horse. As this is where most horses have a problem, getting their leg caught
in the low wire/rail Same thing applies to round pens.

I know someone mentioned replacing the helmets after 5 years per the
manufacturer's directions. Anyone curious about this as my helmets all
have
styrofoam in them and according to modern research, that stuff never
breaks

down in our landfills. Anyone have any better answers other than the
manufacturers need to keep selling helmets? BTW, I totally understand
replacing after an accident, just not for normal useage.

Hi List,

What I have found in helmets--- Each manufacture, makes different
shapes, uses different materials. So, what might fit me would not fit
you.

I always buy mine in a shop where I can try several on.

I find with a lot of use they only last a couple years, so I am always
looking for a new one.

When I bought my ski helmet I had to go to 4 or 5 stores to find one that
fit correctly. You will know when you find the right size.

Same when buying western boots, or better yet English riding boots.

Rule number 1. NEVER mail order !!! to save a nickel, only to pitch the
helmet in the back of the tack room.

Same thing applies to a protective vest, mine fits perfect, only after
trying several on.

Yes, this is a very important message, most all horses will try this on the
first couple of trail rides, DO NOT LET THIS DEVELOPE. [it is not cute]

Jerry Friz,
Anderson, Ca.
--

On the same note, if you are riding through water and your horse starts
to splash with a front hoof, encourage the horse IMMEDIATELY to move on.

Your horse is getting ready to lay down and get you, your expensive
saddle, and said horse very, very wet -- at the very least. If your foot
or leg gets trapped and you go under water, the consequences could be
even more disastrous.

If you've never encountered this before, it can be tempting to just sit
there and think, Awww, that's cute as the water droplets go flying in
the sunlight. DON'T! If your horse starts to get weak in the knees to
lie down, it may be too late to prevent a dunking.

the glacier fed streams, are very silty, can't see anything, on this type

Re: more on dapples

2009-07-07 Thread jerry friz

This message is from: jerry friz jf...@com-pair.net

Hi Cherrie,
All the links that you refer to are referring to color markings, primitive,
etc. some might call this dappling, however, this is a different subject.
I find that very few people know what dappling really is. In some cases
their own horses have dapples, and they haven't noticed them. Sometimes the
dapples can only be seen from a certain angle with good lighting.

Yes Emily, it is interesting.
I might say the reason I have never seen racehorses dapple is because of the
garbage diet they are on, drugs, etc. I am sure there are plenty of QH, and
Thoroughbreds off the track that have dapples. [NOT COLOR MARKINGS IN THE
GENE POOL]
I doubt if the, gene, makes a difference here. It is more about
''lifestyle. [ or maybe I should say horsestyle]

Cheers,
Jerry

This message is from: Cherrie Nolden prairieparad...@yahoo.com

Here is more on the silver dilution gene:
http://www.animalgenetics.us/Silver.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_dapple_gene
http://www.horse-genetics.com/silver-dapple.html

Perhaps the Fjord has this gene, or perhaps it has some other missense
mutation that causes similar dappling?

Now consider these links:
http://www.theequinest.com/colors/dilution-genes/
http://en.allexperts.com/e/d/du/dun_gene.htm

Perhaps what we are calling dapples are just cobwebbing, a known effect
of the dun dilution gene?

Or perhaps the dappling effect is caused by a sooty factor that has an
unknown inheritance pattern:

http://www.horsecolor.us/dilutions/dun/index.html

And if this person's theory is right, then all horses have the underlying
primitive markings that are visible in dun dilutes:

http://duncentralstation.com/PrimitiveTheory.html

Thus, breeds of horses witout dun dilution may show the primitive
cobwebbing. And perhaps diet plays a role also.

There is so much that we do not know.

Cherrie

Uh, Jerry that is just the deposit...they don't have even the 'final'
ticket

prices figured out.

Yes I wholeheartedly agree, that's a whole heckofalot of moolah for 95% of
the

population, IMO.

But, I'll bet if you combined the 5% of those equestrians who can afford
this

event worldwide, I am sure they will fill every seat.

I know its an honor to host these games, etc, etc, but what the ??

As an aside, I looked into volunteering for this, and it is no walk in the
park signing on and getting a volunteer assignment, even w/ a competitive
and
organizational background in whatever discipline you are putting in for.
(In

my case, driving).

Me-thinks they just might re-think some aspects of this endeavor.

Looks good to me. If this filly was closer, I would want to take a look at
her. [Also, would like to see the pedigree, it was not completed on my view]

I am not able to look at the u-tube videos from this computer.
25-30 years ago a new breed was started in France. Their foundation stock
was a Fjord, and a TB. You can probably do a search on Google to find
them. Last I heard they were doing fine.

Hi, everone. Do Fjords need bit seats filed into their first molars? I was
just told about this by a horse trainer who specializes in reining and
roping. But would a Fjord trail horse need it? My Fjord uses a Kimberwick
cheek piece with an MB2 Myler mouth piece and he just direct-reins.
