Brandy and Dodger
This message is from: Nancy Blauers Congratulations to Brandy and Dodger on their brilliant performance in the Tevis Cup! What a great accomplishment! Keep up the fantastic work and many many happy healthy miles more to you both! I own and love Dodger's full brother- Southern Cross Theodin- here in sunny Central Florida...and I really must say- he is great easygoing horse! Smart, willing and honest-will trail ride all day but he also can be "Dennis the Menace" in a yellow pony suit! He enjoys throwing feed and water buckets over the fence (about 4-5X a day)...harassing the barn cats(it's those fluffy irresistible tails)breaking fence boards(I'm really really good at fixing them now) and scratching his big butt on anything suitable (husband's brand new car)...we call it "Idle Hooves"...he makes me laugh all the time- I love him more than words can say and wouldn't trade him for the world! I've often wondered about my Mischa's other foal (she passed away a few years back due to colic) and hoped that he was loved and well cared for I'm so happy to hear that Dodger is doing great-and to Brandy: you've inspired us all! Thanks for being such wonderful ambassadors for such a great horse breed! And a special thank you to Dianne Saleh of Fawn Creek Fjords too- please give Danser a big hug for me! Registry Question
This message is from: Nancy Blauers Happy Holidays to you all and I hope that my fellow Fjord owners are enjoying their wonderful horses! I have a question- have any of you approached the American Buckskin Registry Association as far as registering their Fjord in this group? Or do they only allow stock/ light horses? A trainer friend of mine thinks my Theodin would do a get job in Western Trail and we were both wondering if he could be registered ABRA? Thanks so very much and have a wonderful Holiday everyone! Headstalls
This message is from: Nancy Blauers Hi Everyone!I hope that you are all out enjoying the fall weather from the backs of your fjords! I have a question...I am looking for a nice western headstall, with conchos and tooling (yeah, I like the fancy smancy stuff) for my gelding Theodin. His head is a quite a bit bigger than my quarter horse, yet much smaller than a draft size. Has anyone come across a website/dealer/store that has anything to fit fjords? Also too, any good info on western bits, would be gladly welcome...a 5 inch fits him but I think it might be a little snug, maybe 5 1/4 would be better and I'd buy one if I could find it.Also- thanks Ellen for the lead on Green River Discount Tack...nice site!Happy trails!Nancy BlauersGeneva,FLWhere summer is still hanging on with all it's humid glory.ugh! _ Hotmail: Powerful Free email with security by Microsoft. http://clk.atdmt.com/GBL/go/171222986/direct/01/ Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw Classified Ads: http://tinyurl.com/5b5g2f
SpaceShuttles and Fjords
This message is from: Nancy Blauers Hi Everyone, Been lurking for a spell but had to share my Space Shuttle/Fjord Horse experienceI live fairly close to Cape Canaveral and often get a great view of the shuttle launches from my backyard.well back to Fjords:after spending month and months ground driving and working on all my ground work with my little gelding, Theodin, I finally started him under saddle.a few months into this, I was out riding him in the arena on afternoon when I had a thoughthwhen's that shuttle due back in? About ten minutes later-yup you guessed it, the earthshaking sonic booms exploded overhead. And being a nearly perfect Fjord (nearly perfect due to the fact that he LOVES to break everything!) he just planted his feet and squeaked! That's it...no bolting, bucking or other expected behaviors in a young horse-just planted and squeaked. So I'm proud to say that I have a "Shuttle-Sonic-Boom-Broke" Fjord! Draft Horse Saddles
This message is from: Nancy Blauers <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Everyone! I can across a website that interested me greatly and thought I'd share and ask if anyone else knows these folks and has any comments or suggestions on their saddles...the site is called Draft Horse Classified. They have treeless saddles, western, english & aussie saddles and custom build to wither tracings. They have a nice Crates Wade saddle that I really like, but I'm torn between that and the treeless Haflinger/Fjord saddle they advertise.anyone out there love treeless saddles? Are they safe? Good secure seat? Not that I really need it since Theo is so quiet on the trail but still it's nice to have a secure seat while enjoying a fast paced ride (yup- this little Fjord has a great canter and will go go go and then whoa whoa whoa- best trail horse I've ever had!) Anyway if anyone has any experience with this company, any input would be greatly appreciated. Also, I'm looking for a 5 1/4 inch western shanked snaffle bit. I was riding Theo in a great little 5 1/4 wide mouth, 6 1/2 inch shanked bit but the mouth piece was copper & he broke it the other day. re:Black Walnut-poisonous
This message is from: Nancy Blauers <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Everyone, Yes! I have also heard that black walnut is highly toxic and can cause a horse to severly founder if there is any chips/sawdust where the horse might step in it. For anyone who purchases thier stall shavings at a lumberyard ,you can run a terrible risk of pine shavings having black walnut sawdust mixed in...please ask the mill if thier shavings are untainted..I know it sounds a little paranoid...but better safe than sorry! My quarter horse Sam went through a horrible founder about 7 years ago...11 degree rotation on his front left...9 degree on his right...foundered on all four feet...no rotation on the backs. It was rough road to recovery but he is a tough boy and thanks to my trainer,my vet and my farrier he is sound and ridable today. We still don't know what exactly triggered this but I can guarantee you I was glued to the internet learning everything I can about this dreadful thing. Founder is, by far, one of the worse things that can happen to your horse! Please take the time to research the poisonous plants that can grow in your pastures and fencelines! Keep your pastures mowed as well...most toxic plants flower and have seed pods which are potentially deadly! Be safe & happy trails! This message is from: "Nancy Blauers" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Everyone! I was wondering if anyone has a suggestions that can help my Fjord, Theo. The gnats here in central Florida love him. Good luck down there, should I send you some ropes & harnesses for repelling down those slopes? They might even hold the fjords And speaking of husbands... mine felt that planting his summer garden near the fenceline of the paddock was a great ideait hasn't rained in quite a while, so that puddle near that spot must be drool ...and back to fjordies my little Theodin went out on his very first big trail ride... his first time off our street... his first time really out of an arenafirst time in the deep dark forests of sunny Florida.and... HE DID GREAT!! I'm really proud of him! He even walked right up to a parked airboat and tried to steal a beer, while all the other horses in the group wouldn't get with in 20 feet of that rig! Gotta Love em!! As far as Fjords as first horses go I started out with Quarters...still love em...still have my Sam ( who is Theo's best buddy) but I think if I had discovered Fjords sooner there would be a lot less creaking when I get up in the morning.. I do agree with finding a great trainer for beginners- I was lucky- my mentor is a great horse lady who raised and showed paints and she always steered me in the right direction as far as trainers, good horses and how to keep em that way.. Also a great book that I read which was way helpfull in Theo's training is Storys Guide to Training Horses by Heather Smith Thomasmy tattered copy is always in hand! He's been so much fun to train (my first time training a horse-ever ) and I love the bond we share, he's such a characture! Since there has been so much discussion about colic & surgeries lately on the list and I know that this is such a touchy subject, but I have had very limited exposure to horses that have gone through colic surgery- I would sincerely appreciate any knowledge that the list has to offer on the subject. I was wondering if any of you who had the misfortune of having to go throught the surgery could share with me the details, healing time and other experiences- I have always been told by friends who were trainers/horsepeople that it is such an incredible invasive procedure that many horses have a difficult time recovering. I understand that this can be a very painful thing to have to recount but I feel that the more we share and educate ourselves the better we can make our choices for our dearly loved horses if we should be so misfortunate to face such a decision. Fjords for sale in Florida
This message is from: "Nancy Blauers" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello All! I hope that you are all well and have enjoyed a joyous and wonderful Holiday season! It's been quite a while since I've written to the list, but I've been lurking We had a very rough September. The day after our gelding, Theodin had his 3rd birthday, his dam, our beloved Mischa died from colic. I was devastated and I'm still having quite a time with her loss. Thankfully, I have Theo to dote on & love. He's been under saddle now for about 5 months and is coming along very very well. My old trainer came out to evaluate us and she really loved Theo and ( a little pat on the back for me) loved the job I did with him. He has been so easy to train and I've never trained a horse to do anything before working with him. It's been a very rewarding experience and the bond between us is amazing! And he's a little cantering fool! Nice little collected lope too! I'm looking forward to taking him to his first show in February. So back to my original thought ( being an artist, I can and ocassionally will bounce back & forth- like a ping pong ball in a hurricane) there's a gal who buys & sells horses over near Tampa Florida who has 2 Fjords that she is selling. I came across her article the other night the mare, named Ducky, is 6 years old- greenbroke, looks like she is in good condition and a purebreed, I'm not sure about the papers but this lady only wants $1800.00 for her. The mare has a foal by her side, Nigel, who is 5 months old and she only wants $1000.00 for him. If anyone is interested contact her at www.dangerzonehorses.com or at [EMAIL PROTECTED] I thought about getting these two for myself but I've decided to put all my energy into Theo at this time and am focusing on further developing my fine art business as well... so back to the studio with me. Starting Fjords under Saddle
This message is from: "Nancy Blauers" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Everyone, I have a question- What is the ideal age to begin training under saddle? I've heard Fjords mature a bit slower than other breeds. My little guy is about to turn two in Sept, but I'm in no hurry and want to do this the correct and smart way. He already is well versed in groundwork, lounging, sacked out with saddle, has been ponied and bitted up. He's about 13.2 and probally wieghs about 850, going through that lanky goofy stage! Also does anyone know of a really good training manual/book? I'm hesitant to send Theodin to a trainer since we've developed such a close bond and he really responds to anything new I expose him to, however I'm not a pro and I'd hate to mess him up. I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks a Million! Nancy Blauers Geneva, Florida
Re: Very Sore front feet
This message is from: "Nancy Blauers" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Everyone!I've been lurking for a spell and when I saw the notes on the potential founder I had to write! Please take this very seriously! My QH gelding had almost identical situation about three weeks before he really foundered. He was very ouchy on his front feet one morning, my trainer called the vet, who ruled out founder. We gave "Sam" a week off from training. This was about 3 weeks before he really was in trouble, during this time he seemed ok, so we started light work again. "Sam" then broke out in hives, then had a really bad upper respiratory incident at a show. The following weekend, my trainer found him lying down in his paddock late in the afternoon and could not get him to stand. She pulled her trailer up close to him, managed to get him up just enough to get him in and then hauled him to the closest Equine Hospital. He was given antibiotics& DMSO intravenous. After the intitial onset of laminitis, which occured in ALL FOUR FEET! we brought him home and waited to see the degree of rotation, which can happen a month to 5 months after the initial onset. We had several x rays taken during the course of this time and found that Sam had rotated 11 degrees in his left and 9 in his right. His hind feet were fine. We hired a farrier who had extensive expereince treating foundered horses. It was close to a full year before he was sound and ridable again. My vet says he has recovered 100 percent. I now only enjoy him for a little arena work & trail riding,& I watch his diet like a hawk. He's out right now playing with my fjords, his best buddy is little Theodin! There are so many triggers to set off this horrible illness, and so many ways that it can creep up on you like Sam's did. Please get another opinon fast! Best of luck to you and please keep us updated. Nancy BlauersGeneva,Fl

New Years Greetings!
This message is from: "Nancy Blauers" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello and Happy New Year to all out there in Fjordieville!I've been lurking for quite a spell and just wanted to jump in and wish everyone a healthy and happy start to 2005! All's well down here in sunny Florida, the weather is perfect for those long afternoon trail rides. This has been quite a summer- we were hit by Charley, Frances and Jeanne but finally have our place back together and most of our debris cleaned up, anyone need firewood? I really have to brag about how well behave our Fjords, Mischa ,Theodin and QH Sam were during the storms. We housed them in our garage- attached to the house, where they quietly munched hay and entertained themselves with playing" Who's gonna sneak in the house next" and " Hey!?! This laundy basket is full of great things to chew up". They added so much light and levity to trying to reason with hurricane season! Can someone be kind enough to share the details of the BOD meeting in Orlando this month? I'd love to stop by to meet everyone and only live about 30 minutes from downtown Orlando. Looking forward to it and thanks! Happy trails! Nancy BlauersSouthern Cross FjordsGeneva, FL

Lasik & the Deer Herders
This message is from: "Nancy Blauers" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Everyone! A special thanks to all that emailed me to let me know of their Lasik experiences.I've found who I think is the best eye surgeon in Florida and have scheduled for my procedure in June. When I got home from work last night my husband Greg told me of our horses' lastest antics. He was out working in the yard when he looked up and noticed two deer in the back part of our pasture. Theodin- who is only 8 month old-, and Sam my Quarter horse, were out hanging around by their favorite tree when Theo spotted the intruders. He squealed loudly, pinned his ears and galloped off towards the deer. Sam, probally feeling that he was upstaged by the little upstart, followed bellowing too. Greg couldn't believe his eyes when Theo charged in and "cut" the deer off from each other and then chased his terrified quarry over the fence. Sam's deer was long gone by the time he got close ( Sam's a little lazy and running fast is'nt one of his favorite pastimes except if there's food involved). I think little Theo just might have just tipped his hoof towards his vocation! I think it's time for me to bring a few calves home to see what he does! I love reading about Dusty's adventures and would love to expose Theo to reining and team penning. Mischa is still doing great at my trainers. He is totally in awe of her quietness. he keeps trying to put her in situations which he thinks she needs to be exposed to in order to be a great trail horse and so far she's passed every test with flying colors. I think Bobby- once he learns how to correctly pronounce Fjord- he calls them "Fords" , "Feee-yords"- or that"Norwegian Mohawk Horse that Nancy's got", will probally start looking to buy soon for a few of his more timid clients. The Fjordhorse has a new fan. We are hitting the trails this weekend to celebrate my turning 40 this week. Anyway, have a great day everyone and enjoy the spring! Hug your shedding Fjords! Cheers! Intra Lasik Surgery
This message is from: "Nancy Blauers" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Everyone! Great time of year for riding! My mare Mischa is enjoying a little training 101 with my friend & trainer Bob and is doing great! Bob's worked with Quarters & Arabians his whole life and Mischa's his first Fjord, he can't get over how smart she is! I think we have a new fjord fan! Well, here's my first question to the list- after months of riding through the shedding fjord hair- I've had to jump off to remove hair from my contact lens several times. This has prompted me to investigate Lasik surgery. Has anyone on the list have anything to share about their experiences with this procedure? I know this is non horse related but it will definately help with the enjoyment of my horses so I think I can bend the rules just a wee bit. And now for my second question: I'm preparing little "Theodin"'s papers for registration- should I get him microchipped first- or should I register first and then microchip? Thanks! Weaning& Gelding
This message is from: "Nancy Blauers" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Everyone! I hope that you are all able to take a little time to go out and enjoy your Fjords during this Holiday Season! Being a newbie to Fjords, and also this is the first foal I've ever worked with ( I have experience with older horses)- I was wondering what is the proper age to wean a Fjord and what is the recommended age to geld? Little "Theo" is about 3 and a half months old now and I think that Mischa has had enough and wants to get back to "work". Luckily "Uncle Sam"(my Quarter horse) is a great babysitter- but screeches and runs like a scaulded ape when the baby checks to see if he has the same equipment as Mom. I'm looking forward to showing my Fjords this spring and helping to promote this breed- they are already a big hit in our Quarter-horse dominated neighborhood! I really appreciate everyone's advice and enjoy everyone's stories about showing, vet tips&nutrition- this list is such a valuable resource-Thank you! New Baby Advice
This message is from: "Nancy Blauers" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Everyone, I think my last post got lost in cyberspace. Had a little surprise this labor day weekend, I woke Sunday morning, crawled out to feed and Sam ,my Qh gelding, started up with his alarm grunt( usually reserved for escaped emus and rocks). He was facing the barn where Mischa stood quietly waiting for breakfast. Well I was a little bleary eyed(a bit too much wine the night before) and I was shocked to see a curous little face peer around from behind Mischa. And the dang vet said we still had three weeks before she was due! Anyway we now have a beautiful little colt and a special thanks to Dianna and her wonderful stallion Danser of Fawn Creek Fjords. This little guy, we named him "Theodin" is super sweet already loping around the pasture and eating well. This is where I need your help- today as the Florida temps soared to the mid ninties, our " Theo" had a very rough afternoon with heat exhaustion. He became very lethargic, his gums darkened to a dark pinkish red but he still attempted to eat and walk. We think our thermometer is off- it read 104. We immediately hosed off his legs with cool water, gave him a wash with rubbing alcohol on his chest and abdomen and a friend gave him 1CC shot of Bantamine. Our vet was hours away on another call so we were on our own with family and neighbors. We also gave him electrolites & water orally, and put a huge industrial fan in the barn facing his stall. One of our neighbors dashed home to get an article he just found that described the exact same situation with another fjord foal in Florida. We followed what the article stated ,it even suggested shaving off the baby hair and he is a very wooly little guy. During this time the baby seemed to be getting better- still exhausted- but alert and eating more ( and he tried to kick a few times at our friend Rick). His body temp seems to be going down- his gums are looking better and he's getting up to pee , which looks good , it's clear and not dark yellow and his skin snaps right back when you check for dehydration and he is eating quite a bit. Has anyone else ever experienced this with babies born in warm weather climates? Can anyone offer any advice? This has been a very rough night and I'd really appreciate any advice from you seasoned Fjord breeders. What is the normal range body temp for fjord foals? What should his heart rate and respiration be?I'm still worried sick over this. Thanks! Nancy Blauers Geneva, Florida

This message is from: "Nancy Blauers" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Everyone, Down here in sunny, swampy ,chock full o' mosqitos (and other small and highly unpleasant little buggers-ie fire ants and no see ums) Florida, my vet recomends that we vaccinate for West Nile every 3 to 4 months. I gave my Fjord Mischa her booster back in January (vet fee $25) and she had a little bit of swelling which was gone in a few days. She's due soon- I'll write back if she has any swelling again. I'm thinking of buying an Austrailian saddle to ride my fjord with- does anyone have anything to say- pros and cons about these saddles and Fjords? Thanks! I've been working with Mischa on her "kicking habit", thanks to all you folks who wrote to me with your suggestions! I really appreciate your help! I guess too, that since she is bred, she might be a little bit more sensitive to strange horses appproaching her. Other than that she has been perfect- I've been such a trail sissy for years and "Mischa" has given me so much confidence that I actually galloped her with a small group of friends out on the trail! We had a great time and the word "whoa" actually meant something! Have a great day ! Training Question
This message is from: "Nancy Blauers" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Everyone, I was wondering if I can get a little training advice on how to deal with a horse that kicks- not me- but horses. I was out trail riding this afternoon with my neighbors- and my usually sweet little Fjord mare- this was her first time out in a group of other horses that she did not know, suddenly whipped her back end around and kicked a horse that was about four feet away. She kicked him hard- right in the stifle. I felt horrible- it happened so fast that I couldn't stop her in time. Luckily the gelding was ok- a little bruised and swollen-( and now really scared of Fjords). We continued the hour ride back home- with us WAY in the back. Can anyone give me a few tips on how to stop this behavior? Is this a behavior that can be stopped? She does great with my gelding at home- she'll even pony off him with no trouble. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. I have a few really good trainers in the area- however I would like to hear from folks that know and love Fjords and understand Fjord behavior. Re:Bats
This message is from: "Nancy Blauers" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Everyone, I think bats are awesome- actually had a pet bat for a bit- "Echo" was an Egyptian Fruit bat that I rescued from a very shady "pet store" in St Pete Fl back in 94'. After he put on some weight and grew his hair back, he was an absolutely delightful creature- like a puppy with wings. My apartment landlord- who originally said that " No dogs, no cats- but you can have anything with wings- (meaning my yellow nape amazon- "Franko" was OK) had the shock of his life when he went to fix a leaky sink. He said that was the single most creative thing he's ever discovered in a persons apartment! Echo went to a breeding facility up in Gainsville, (Lubee Foundation) shortly after. Anyway- if you ever have any questions about bats and their habits ( which differ greatly from region to region) you can contact Bats Conservation International (they have a great website) and their phone # is 512- 327-9721. "Mischa" is shedding like crazy in the Florida heat- we skipped spring- it's already in the mid eighties- uh! By the way - never ride a shedding fjord bareback : ) Have a great day! Re: First Mane trimming!
This message is from: "Nancy Blauers" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Everyone! After reading all this info about rainrot, are fjords easily susceptable to this? I bath my horses about once a week, alternating every other week with a light Iodine shampoo and AlbertoVO 5. Never had any trouble with the rot even in the sweltering hot summers with daily rain storms! (However this is my first Fjord and I've only had her a few weeks. (She's awesome, we really love her !)) Yesterday, I decided to trim Mischa's mane for the first time. Thinking to myself- heck your'e an artist -this should be no trouble at all. Now I know there's a video out there-but me- wait for a video- when I already have my mind set and a pair of scissors in hand? Cmon now! Needless to say, Mischa is off sulking in a corner right now. Soft words of encouragement like- "don't worry Sweetie, it'll grow back " have offered no relief to her despair. I trimmed my Aussie once- he hid under the couch for a month! They now have something to talk about-" If she's coming with food-great!- scissors and clippers- RUN!! " Even Sam, my dun QH gelding is taunting her. He has been free of the clippers for over a year since his show ring retirement.( A judge once asked me if Sam bodyclipped himself- that should have been a hint). The Gods of Ancient Norway must have heard her sigh.for they have sent Loki out to avenge Mischa's poor tattered mane. Within minutes after I put my tools away figuring "I'll try again tomorrow"- all hell broke loose. An old tree fell across our brand new fenceGreg's little Westie terrier decided that the carpet was a great place to get sick, (it was a fecal fiesta). and my nieghbor's kids (sweet- but REALLY hard to get rid of) started pounding on the door... yelling that they had chocolate for sale ( I just wrote the check for Weight Watchers). In the backyard, Mischa - still quiet- was wearing what appeared to be a soft grin. I threw the scissors away Does anyone have that address for that video? Have a great day and go hug your horse(s)! I hope to be able to sneak out to ride "Mischa" this afternoon for a bit. Since moving to Orlando from Colorado, she's been shedding her coat like crazy and we leave this bizarre wake of horse hair everywhere we go! Earlier ,my QH gelding "Sam" went to nip her butt and came up with a mouthful of hair. I wish I had a video of him trying to spit it all out! I'm considering creating alot more Fjord products, I paint museum quality oil portraits (people&animals) sculpt in wood& resins and am starting to fiddle around with mosaics. Hi Everyone!
This message is from: "Nancy Blauers" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Everyone! I just wanted to come out of the shadows and say hello! After 15 years of being fascinated with Fjords, I've finally decided to step away from the realm of Quarter Horses and try one. I've just purchased a fantastic 6 yr old mare from Fawn Creek Fjords in Colorado and she is an absolute sweetheart! In the week that she's been with us, here in sunny Orlando, "Mischa" settled right in and has become a very loved and fawned over member of our family. My Quarter horse gelding, "Sam" is still staring at her, trying to figure out what she is (he's done that at open shows with leopard apps and minis too). I'm so looking forward to enjoying this horse, I have a work at home situation (I'm an artist) and I plan on spending lot's of time with her. I'm greatly enjoying the FjordHorse list - thanks to all for your invaluable information! Happy Riding (and Driving) Everyone!
