Fjord Wanted
This message is from: lisa galletti dante091...@sbcglobal.net I'm searching for my next fjord and here's what I'm after. 14 to 14.3 hands, 7 to 17 years old with easy to sit gaits, a solid whoa and stands well for mounting/dismounting from a block, neck reining nice but not a necessity, trail experience a must but doesn't need to be the Man from Snowy River type of trails. Needs to have super ground and stall manners, no bite/kick/rear or general nastiness, hopefully somewhat easy on fences. Must enjoy being fussed over, good for grooming, bathing, clipping, mane cutting, pick...ing up hooves standing tied to fence or trailer, etc. Can be ridden out alone or with others and doesn't mind either way, settles in nicely when hauled places, trailers well, good for vet and farrier. Doesn't need to be a super performance horse, better to be a solid equine citizen. I need a steady eddy type, a confidence builder and a partner I can trust. What can I offer? A loving home with an experienced horse owner who keeps her horses at home on dry lot, feeds good quality grass hay, has a great relationship with her vet and farrier and has recently retired her older fjord gelding from riding. I also have a 10 year old son who is horse crazy and spends a lot of time at the barn with me and the horses, they are part of our family. My downfall are my knees, one is replaced and the other is on its way but I'm not ready to give up riding, I just don't move as quickly and don't want to ride the hills anymore or go fast. I have owned ridden for over 25 years but due to the physical issues would list myself as a very cautious advanced beginner at this stage of life. Would prefer to find something west of the rockies to keep shipping costs down but will consider others possibly, I'm located in northern California. Will vet check and possibly x-ray if necessary. Can provide references. Will also consider mares and geldings. Price will depend on the individual horse. Current pictures and video a must as most will be too far for me to travel in person to see. This message is from: Willows Edge Farm i...@willowsedgefarm.com So I have a student who adores our little 12 year old Fjord mare - she's tiny at 12.2hh. She has decided to look around for a shorty and I am wondering if anyone has a short Fjord for sale out there... We have a 13.2 mare and she thinks she's too tall. YES, I know this is outside of the standards for our breed, but since we have one, I though there are probably others out there. We are here about 20 minutes North of Seattle and the horses are a little lethargic from all this warm weather we've been having - trot? Never heard of it! 91 degrees here yesterday and with the outdoor arena - it was warm riding (we should be mid 70s this time of year). This message is from: jen frame jenfra...@gmail.com Hi Corinne,I don't have a short Fjord for sale, but I am responding to your e-mail because ever since I got my 13.2 hand mare, I've wondered if there are 12.1 or 12.2 hand Fjords out there, so I am happy to hear that you have one. This message is from: lender...@yahoo.com My wife and I have had Fjords for 15 years. We just lost our 12 year old gelding (Rolland) to a large enterolith that ruptured his intestine. We are currently looking for a replacement even though we do have an older mare that we can ride for short distances in the mean time. We live in Placerville, CA (between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe) and would like something reasonably close. We trail ride quite a bit and camp out in the Sierra's and would like a Fjord that could keep up with our friends that ride larger horses, so something on the taller side would be best. Ellen also wants to start showing western and trail. Price is definitely a consideration in this economy. Anybody downsizing? Need to have your Fjord go to a loving family? My father in law imported 3 pregnant mares from Holland 20 years ago to start his herd and had as many as 12 Fjords at a time. We are not new to this deal but got out of the breeding business and are into the fun (camping/day rides) side. Any ideas? Thank you - CL -- In a perfect world there would be a nice grey dun mare or gelding out there with our name on it. This message is from: Bo Fjords Horse Ranch [EMAIL PROTECTED] If any of you know of an older Fjord that would enjoy being pampered and well cared for in exchange for the occasional ride around the farm, please let me know. Hello Lee, We have for sale a very nice 19 yr.old fjord gelding we've owned since he was a colt.We used him for riding and hunting, then he was used in a team for farm work and shows, parades, pulling etc. His team mate developed a ringbone in his front hoove and had to be put down. So we would like to find a good home for this fine fellow. He still looks really good and frolikes around with the other horses. He's quite, tall at about 15 hands. We are open to negoiateas for as price as long as he'd get a good home. But I'm afraid that transportation would be a problem as rising fuel cost has made long hauls for horses quite expensive. If we can be of further assistance please let us know. Thanks, Larry Boe from Bo-Fjords The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw

This message is from: Lee Hardin[EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Everyone, My husband and I have just returned from the Taylorsville, NC area. The year+ long search for a GOOD home for our married daughter's 15 year old Saddlebred cross is finally over. After work today we delivered Ryan to a beautiful farm and a loving family. Their barn has 8 stalls and a bunk house (hardwood floors, full kitchen and two bedrooms, hardly what we called a bunk house). There is also a guest house in addition to the primary residence, log cabin. The family has an interest in older horses. One of their two horses is a 28 yr. old Arabian in great condition. Last Saturday, Ryan's perspective owner, the 21 year old daughter of the family, and her mother came to our farm to meet Ryan. The mother of the young lady, who also rides, fell in love with our Fjords. She wants a Fjord for herself and has asked me to help her find a 15+ year old Fjord will lots of riding experience. This family trail rides on their dairy farm. The mother is a petite woman and would enjoy a Fjord around 13.2 hands. If any of you know of an older Fjord that would enjoy being pampered and well cared for in exchange for the occasional ride around the farm, please let me know. I will keep an eye out for you and mention your wants on our FREE ad website, with your permission to list your email for a contact. There may be someone out there willing to sell their older Fjord with the talents for that price, but most Fjord farms will keep this type of Fjord at the farm for their clients rather than under sell their talented Fjord. Unfortunately your first purchase is what happens with new Fjord owners. At $4500 buyers will normally get a green broke, bad habits, or younger Fjord. If you could afford $6500 to $8500, you will have a lot more to select from in the market. This may not be what you want to hear, but it is how I see the Fjord market as of today. With the price of hay, fuel, boarding, and training, the cost of raising a Fjord from birth to 5 years old is not longer $3500; it is more like $10,000. So, a 5 year old under $8500 is a real bargain, however, a 5 year old only has 2 years under saddle and maybe an additional year of cart training. .. -- Catherine Lassesen Hestehaven - The Horse Garden www.hestehaven.com / [EMAIL PROTECTED] Southern Oregon The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw

This message is from: Debbie LeBreton [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello to you; I just want to tell you that I believe that a dead broke horse is either to old or someone is telling stories. Our fjords are great but they do have a jump in them once in a while or something is happening around them. They do handle it well and if they have lots of hours on them everyday, maybe they wouldn't jump if something surpise them on a trail. I think that I can get you a couple of Fjords that are dead broke like that or so the people say that have them. I will also read the ads that you are putting up on the web site. Trimming Shoeing, HYPP, Fjord Wanted Responses
This message is from: Emily Wigley [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm so glad Erin spoke up in defense of good farriers! My farrier is excellent, and I know I am really fortunate to have him on my team! He trims those that don't need shoes, and shoes those that need them. Each hoof is dealt with individually, with the four adding up to assist the horse's movement, growth, use, and comfort (not in that order). My fjord does wear shoes, although she has excellent feet. She works hard, and in our wet pacific northwest climate, she lives on crushed rock footing in her paddock (for drainage and no mud) and goes out to graze for a few hours a day. The crushed rock is hard on even the best feet, and tends to scoop them out with a sanding kind of effect, even though the rock is packed. I have a few who need shoes and a few who don't, and two who just need fronts (no huge jumping or upper level dressage for their balance to be challenged with half shoes). A good trimming job is as special as a good shoeing job, and is well worth the fee that a good farrier should charge. As for the horse that fell asleep and tipped over, it may or may not be HYPP, and if it's a hanoverian (as I think it was?), it probably isn't HYPP. Some horses' knee locking mechanism is not as active/ automatic as others. My hanoverian x tb mare does the same thing, rarely goes down but does a creepy woops! when napping and catches herself before she goes down. AND, she stays asleep. It's weird, and amazing, and there is nothing wrong with her (except her lazy knees!). I think I should sell tickets! Thanks to those who have contacted me about Fjords for sale, as I look for a well trained, experienced gelding for a student. A couple of youngsters have been presented to me, which is probably perfectly appropriate considering the amazing temperament of Fjords, but I am serious about looking at nothing younger than 9. Ok, maybe 7 or 8 if it has had an active, well educated life! The student I seek the horse for is very new to horses, and I want him to be well cared for by his future Fjord, thus I am looking for a non-baby. :-) Thank you, thank you for the nice suggestions! This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi List, I received an email this morning from my sister-in-law who lives in Stockton, CA. She has begun searching for a horse for her 10 year old daughter. This little girl has always been horse crazy, but since they are 'city' folks, living in one of those gated communities, typical yuppie subdivision with a pool in the back yard, they tried to discourage her 'disease'. I laughed as they described her unexplained, ever-growing, fervor. They even told me one time that the best Christmas present we could ever send her would be a box of horse poop! LOL! Maybe they were thinking that'd 'fix' her??!! We horse folks know that there is absolutely no known cure - except for owning your own horse! Medical science has not yet been able to invent a shot to cure this ailment! I suggested that they find a good riding instructor and start with lessons to see if she would remain interested. They did and she did. We have talked about this on several occasions and I told them that as long as she is interested in horses, any $ is well spent! You never see the police chasing a kid down on a horse to bust them for drugs and it's pretty hard to get pregnant on a horse! LOL!! Anyway, I have sold everything here except for youngsters so told them I would start looking for the right Fjord. She is taking English lessons and needs to have a 'well done, been there, done that' Fjord with that kind, willing disposition. If you have one for sale or know of one that would be 'right', please contact me privately. Thanx so much. Gayle Ware Field of Dreams Eugene, OR www.fjordhorse.com

I wish my budget would allow me to go up in price because I think then I'd find the perfect combination of a Fjord that can do dressage and trails plus a little jumping for fun. But I've already lost too much money on dressage horses that ended up with soundness problems, so for now I can only afford a trail horse. I love the idea of a sensible, sure footed, wide bodied and comfortable little horse to take out on mountain trail rides -- and the Fjords sound like a good fit for that! I've been lurking on this list for a few days and have already learned a lot! I've had my eye on Fjords now for several years and have finally decided that I want to buy one, so I thought I'd let you know what I'm looking for in case anyone has any possible matches for sale. The short version is that I want a sure-footed, sensible trail horse that can also do a little dressage (training level at schooling shows) -- rather than a dressage horse that can also do some trail riding, if you see the difference. Three or older, 14h or over and fairly stout, gelding or mare (slight preference for mare), and at least green broke but ideally has some trail experience already. Here's the longer version. I like riding a horse that is willing to go forward, not out of nervous tension or excessive energy, just happy to move out under saddle. And I like riding a horse that is responsive to the rider's aids, that moves away from the leg and is light in the hands, or that has the potential to be light (I'd rather have a green horse that just needs education about lightness than to retrain a heavy horse). Three good, comfortable gaits would be nice, including a decent canter that the horse offers easily. And I'd prefer a horse with balanced conformation, so that it's not built downhill and therefore naturally heavy on the forehand. Brave, sensible, non-spooky, cooperative, friendly, totally sound and uncomplicated to work with both on the ground and under saddle. I would prefer to stay around or under $5000, so that's why I say that I'm looking for a trail horse that can do low level dressage rather than the other way around. I also have to consider the cost of shipping (and would prefer to stay within about 1000 miles of Colorado, to keep shipping costs down). If you know of anything for sale that might be a good match, please let me know. I will try to go out to see a horse in person, but if that isn't possible due to a remote location, then I may be willing to buy off a video if it shows me everything I need to see. Most of my horses are drafts and draft crosses so I'm familiar with the issues common to this type of horse, but one of the reasons I want a Fjord is to have the drafty substance and sensibility in a package that is a better size for trail riding than a full sized draft! Thanks, --Amy -- ~~ Camairyn Farm ~*~ Loveland, CO http://www.goodhorse.com/camairyn ~~

This message is from: Mariposa Farm [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Carol, Thanks for responding to my post. I'm interested in looking futher at Iceman. You are right, the pictures weren't all that great on his page. When you get a chance to make a video of him performing what I had outlined I'd love to see it. I've had one other promising response and it's good to know that some of these horses are out there. We need some better trained Fjords out there representing our breed. Hi Mark- I am actually glad that one cannot buy a Fjord tomorrow so easily, because that would mean we were as overpopulated as QHs. There are plenty of well trained Fjords out there working, showing, or just providing pleasure, and we're not letting go of them! Also, few are willing to pay what a well broke horse is worth. Many at my barn are becoming seriously interested in Fjord ownership, and I of course encourage this. One lady said, I looked all over the web but they are so expensive! I said, So what do you consider expensive? Turns out her budget is $3k and she wants a trained horse safe for her young daughter. I told her as politely as possible that such a horse of any pure breed does not exist. On that note, Mark, there is a horse here in my area who may fit your bill. His name is Majson's Bjmer. High quality well trained Fjord wanted!!
This message is from: Mariposa Farm [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm going to run this want ad again just in case some of you haven't seen it. I'd love to get some responses from people who have this horse and would consider selling him. It's sad that I can buy a QH tomorrow that does all this and not a Fjord! We need some better trained Fjords out there representing our breed. Thanks, Mark Hello- This is Mark McGinley of Mariposa Farm in northern Wisconsin. Mariposa Farm is a small riding and boarding stable and we raise Fjords as well. I'm also on the NFHR board and am currently your Vice President (for you NFHR members). Here at our riding stable we offer lessons and training and we are the only barn in the area that provides these services for western riders. We also bring these kids (and adults) to area shows and help them either with their horses or our own. We do have English trained riders and horses here as well just so you know we don't discriminate I'm looking to purchase a been there done that highly trained Fjord horse for our lesson program. We want to stop using our Arab and QH's for lessons and get these kids riding Fjords instead. We want them to fall in love with Fjords and not our Arab! We don't breed Arabs! We have 6 Fjords right now but they are either young stock or mares that are often bred (and go in and out of training and condition). I've got a couple of youngsters coming up in the ranks who will be great for our program but we don't want to wait 2-3 more years for our clients to be able to ride and show Fjords. We do realize the value of this horse and even more, appreciate the value that it would bring to our barn. If you know someone that wants to part with their perfect Fjord we'd be interested in talking to them. Below is a list of requests that the horse would need to have / perform. Wanted: Exceptionally well trained Fjord gelding. Needs to be safe, sound, and healthy. Western trained for immediate use in lesson and show program for established equestrian center. Our students are beginners through intermediate / advanced. Horse must be conformationally correct with no vices. NFHR registered or able to be registered. We would prefer the horse to be under 14 years old. We'd like some size to this horse and he should be at least 14.1 hands or taller. We would like to see a video of the horse performing the following: 1. Walk, trot, lope in a round pen or on lunge line with verbal commands, both directions with no editing. 2. Same again with young rider. 3. Same again with young rider in arena. Horse must have correct leads and have easy going, relaxed and balanced gaits. 4. Same again with adult rider 5. Video of horse in a Halter Class or Showmanship Class with a young handler. Doesn't have to be actual show but should include other horses in arena. 6. Video of at least a 15 minute lesson on horse with a beginner rider no editing 7. Again with intermediate rider. 8. Any other video that you think highlights your horse. Any driving training will be considered a plus but not necessary. Vet check and health history required. We prefer a brown dun as our first choice. Thanks, Mark K. Sick Foal Fjord Wanted
This message is from: Catherine Lassesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Peter, I will have to agree with Suzan, at first read, your mare may be going thru foal heat. How many days old is your foal? The black around the eyes is what I would call color... and you just may have yourself a grey. The hair coming off around the muzzle I somewhat normal, hair on the head seems to shed first at times with these guys... When in doubt, take temp and keep a record of the temp. 99.5 to 103 are somewhat normal ranges. Good Luck... FJORD WANTED... OK... I know that everyone wants a low priced trained Fjord... I have a client that is looking for the miracle Fjord... An older mare or gelding that is trained for riding. Gentle for beginner riders and children. Does not have to be Dressaged trained but steady on the trail is a must. Grass drivers OK... we will use grass reins... (LOL) The family is low-middle class and knows that a Fjord can be expensive... but hopes that someone will have a semi-retired one out there, for them. They have 2 horses for sale at this time hoping to pay for their new Fjord. (2 year old APPY gelding an older AQHA mare) They are willing to trade! They will need a seller that is willing to work with them. They both have good steady full time jobs and pay their bills on time. OK... now if anyone is willing to work with these people, Please contact me and I will forward you their name and email. I am looking for an adult well-trained horse that has been driven and will be suitable for CDE competition, picnic drives with my family and perhaps competitive trail riding. Paul @ 715-597-3922 Osseo, Wisconsin I'VE RUN into this before.. large people searching for large horses.. and I maintain that height has nothing to do with strength and weight bearing. It stands to reason that if a tall horse is fine boned and not well conditioned it would be less capable of packing a heavy load than would a short horse that has stout bone and good muscle development. Tall is not always strong.. short is not always weak-- just as with people. Ruthie, nw mt
