Re: Just my two cents
This message is from: Beaver Dam Farm [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello Everybody from Carol Rivoire at Beaver Dam Farm in Nova Scotia -- Where we have only five more days until our Opening for the 15th Season of Nova Scotia Riding Driving Vacations -- Arthur and I, Jaimie, Kelly, and our on-site tech man, Warren, have all got To Do Lists pinned to our shirts. And our mare, Holly, still hasn't foaled. But, I came across a name last night that might do if she foals a filly. -- I took our interns to a recital of the Antigonish Creative Dance Association, and there was a beautiful girl on the stage named Xandi Capistrano -- Isn't that a name for you? -- She's a high school girl in Antigonish, and that's not a stage name. I wanted to respond to . . . This message is from: Beverly Weston [EMAIL PROTECTED] As I stated in my first post just my opinion, but just think if Carol were to put her ads in the local paper or Equine Journal or Horseman's Pedlar she would be broke after the first month! ~~` We do advertise in those publications plus a lot of others, and we've managed to stay afloat -- not broke in the first month. -- Once in a while there are other Fjord breeders who advertise with us in these magazines and newspaper --- But, not often. Mostly, it's just us --- Beaver Dam Farm. ~~ As to the difference in price of the mare, Valena, on the Sale Page of our website and my sales list on the Digest. -- I apologise for that. -- The problem was that the website Sale Page hadn't been updated. -- Definitely, our fault. ---I'd like to explain how we price our horses, although it's not an easy subject, and I might, once again, be guilty of wordiness. -- But first, let me say a word on that subject. -- In print, I AM wordy! I can't help myself. I've always liked to write, ever since I was 12, and I've always used five words, where three might have done the job. -- My stepfather used to call me The Queen of adjectives. Back to the lovely mare, Valena. -- When she first arrived at our farm, we priced what we saw which was a very good looking mare with a great edigree. -- But then, we started working with her and realized that she has an exceptional temperament and attitude. -- Yes, Fjords are generally a gentle breed, but it's a big mistake for people to think that they're all gentle, brave, and easy to handle. After 27 years, I can tell you that it's just not true! -- There are some Fjords that are timid -- and those horses will often get you into trouble. -- There are Fjords that are stubborn and pushy, and these are unpleasant and not easy to work with. -- Then there are the Fjords that have been spoiled through poor early handling and training. Those can be unpleasant and dangerous! Why are most people attracted to Fjords? It's their temperament. Most everybody knows that. It's the breed's most famous characteristic. And while most Fjords might be better in that area than most other breeds, it is one BIG GENERALITY to say they're all like that. -- Not all Fjords are quiet and generous, calm and sensible. -- Valena is all this and more. -- After we'd had her at Beaver Dam Farm for a month or so, and got to know her well, That's when her price changed. -- For the right person, this mare's exceptionally calm, accepting temperament is absolutely priceless. -- Everybody should know that no horse is completely bombproof, and every horse has the potential to hurt you. . . . Yes, we all should know and remember that. -- So, when you come across a mare as gentle as Valena, you just have to recognize how special she is, and if you're in the business of selling Fjords, then that horse must be priced to reflect her unique qualities. When a horse arrives at the farm for consignment sale, we usually price him fairly low. -- And we'll stick to this price for anybody who buys him in the first month. We'll stick with it even if the horse has proven himself to be worth more. -- We never want to have to go down in price, so these initial prices are lower than we expect the horse to eventually sell for. Well, I'll limit my part of this discussion as I have much too much to do to write more. Kind Regards, Carol Rivoire Beaver Dam Farm Fjords II, Ltd. Re: just my two cents
This message is from: Steve Sessoms [EMAIL PROTECTED] I think we are seeing a cross-over from the FjordIssues-L where folks can only send sales pitches on Mondays. For some reason, for the first time it seems like, we are seeing them show up on both lists at the same time, so it may seem like a flood of sales posts to those who don't know about the rules on the other list. About sales pitches on our list . I love them! It is my way of learning how people describe horses from different lineages. I wish folks were more diligent about putting names and (_X_by_) in front of every horses picture, sales ad, and written description. Please, don't single anyone out for this, lots of us enjoy all the sales posts. None of us are interested in every topic that frequently comes up. And if we made a separate list for FjordSales-L, then lets see, we would need a FjordSaddlefitting-L, a FjordToShoeOrNotToShoe-L, a FjordBragsToTellAbout-L, a FjordHowToFeedChubbyPony-L, a FjordGroomingAndManeCutting-L, a FjordOMGoshMyPonyMightBeSick-L, a FjordWhatBitDoYouGuysUse-L . you get the point! :o) Meredith Sessoms Moulton, Alabama, USA ~ Dorina, NFR Aagot, TK Anjanette, TK Arlo and Pepper the black one ~

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Even if you are not in the market to buy but to sell or promote Fjords, you can learn something from these posts and can always hit the delete button. As a newcomer, I came on this list to learn from the people who had been there done that and shared a passion for the breed. There do seem to be a lot of ads right now, but if you look back, they come in bunches - time of year? If you are like me, I always want to know how my animals compare to others both in pedigree, attributes and price. It is human nature. The wise person is the one who sits back quietly and listens and observes, tucking away little bits of important information, contacts, comparisons and resources. Over the last five years I have purchased 5 Fjords and one breeding and paid much more than I would have going other routes. I am tickled pink to have the quality horses, foals and bloodlines that I do as a result. Every one was through a contact or breeder on this list. When someone on this list has a horse for sale, they include lots of information that you don't always get from other sources. You know the philosophy and history of that breeder. Bottom line, I have not been disappointed by any of them, either in the quality of the animal or the way in which business was conducted. I think there is an implicit level of trust built through these posts. The other advantage, As a future seller of Fjords, I want to see what works. Although you may hit that delete button for anything from BDF, BDF and Carol Rivoire have done all of us a tremendous service by helping to create a market and establishing a reputation as an honest breeder who represents quality horses and establishing a high ground for sales. The hyperbole goes with the territory and more power to her to be able to pull it off. It takes both good horses, good staff AND relentless marketing. I for one enjoy reading these posts, and if I don't have time I can always delete. Kathy in Southern Idaho ( None of mine are for sale --yet!)
Just my Two cents
This message is from: Beverly Weston [EMAIL PROTECTED] As I stated in my first post just my opinion and my two cents which I stand by and was under the impression that the list was for discussions and comments pertaining to the breed and I do realize that Carol (who is not the only one guilty of this) does include a lot of information in her postings on the lineage and so forth and does contribute to other discussions on the board as I have read in the past and I am sure the future as she has much knowledge of the breed and the lineage of the breed. I also do realize there is no limit on the amount of words you can type here, but just think if Carol were to put her ads in the local paper or Equine Journal or Horseman's Pedlar she would be broke after the first month! I have had many private emails from people on the list and as long as I know I am not the only one who feels the way I do, my two cents meant something. I absolutely realize that there are people on both sides of the fence and that some do like the for sale posts and others have emailed to say they are long winded and full of exhuberant adjectives. Like I said, just my two cents worth on my feelings on all the for sale ads that have been on lately and it does seem like it has been picking up greatly lately and that may be due to the time of the year also. I will continue to scroll past them. Just a thought for the future: Could the list possibly do a weekly separate email for all for sale horses that come in that week and that way if someone is just interested in the discussions and not horses for sale then we would be able to hit the delete key as so many have suggested I and others do! I will continue to scroll past the posts and delete if there is nothing in the digest that day that interests me as I have been doing., Peace and Tranquility to All, Beth Gerst

This message is from: jgayle [EMAIL PROTECTED] I think it is always important to listen to the minority but not to always act on it. It is so simple to just delete a message that a person is not interested in rather than to assume everyone else is as bored as they are. I believe Steve allows ads once a month on this list? So, lets try some harmony instead of the negative. Just click on delete!! This message is from: Carol Makosky [EMAIL PROTECTED] I hate to say it, but usually when I see a post from BDF, I hit the old delete key soon cause it is all about many horses for sale at some pretty hefty prices. Re: Just my two cents
This message is from: Beaver Dam Farm [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello from Carol Rivoire at Beaver Dam Farm in Nova Scotia -- Regarding ads for Fjords on the List . . . I guess you can't please everybody all the time. --- A lot of people say they enjoy reading about the horses for sale, even if they're not in the market. I can tell you that our clients, the people who send us horses on consignment expect and very much appreciate that we do everything we can to promote the good horses they send us. -- If we didn't, we wouldn't be doing our job. And the fact is that obviously a fair number of people are reading the Fjordhorse Digest are looking for suitable horses to purchase. -- The last horse we advertised, the gelding Toby, generated a lot of inquiries. We've already sent off two DVDs to potential buyers on that horse. And there's another woman just waiting to see if he's still available. -- So these potential buyers are happy to see ads appear on the Digest. As our very intelligent trainer, Kelly MacDonald commented upon reading this two cents worth post --- My goodness, she said . . . .You'd think the Digest limited the number of words permissable on each post. What is the problem? People can always skip posts that don't interest them. This topic came up on the Carriage Driving List, and the concensus was that most people enjoyed hearing about driving horses for sale. They did say that they wouldn't like it if someone only used the List to advertise. But, if they contributed on other topics, then they were perfectly welcome to advertise horses for sale. I think Ive done my part to contribute to a lot of different discussions over these many years. Kind Regards, Carol Rivoire Beaver Dam Farm Fjords II, Ltd. This message is from: Beverly Weston [EMAIL PROTECTED] I don't write in very often as I usually just read and chuckle at most discussions that go on. But lately I really have a problem with the direction this board seems to be going in. I have to say that I thought this was a discussion board for discussions such as bitting or training of fjords and that sort of conversation. Lately, however, it seems as if it is one big free classified ad for horses for sale. I don't mind the short Horse for sale see this website or email this person for information but some of these long posts every week are getting rather ridiculous. Sorry Carol to pick on you but I just don't see the need to list every horse you have for sale on this discussion board with long descriptions of each, needless to say the asking price on at least one is WAY different that what you have the horse listed on your website for (Velena was listed on the website for $10,500 and on the list you have her listed for $16,000). That is a huge jump and I would hope for that jump in price she has at least been shown in some type of either open or fjord show to jump that much. Is there a reason you don't just post a short posting stating quality fjords for sale with your website attached to it for people to reference there for information? I don't mean to pick on you particulary but you seem to be the biggest offender of this. You have a beautiful website and I would think you would want to draw the interested parties to your website to see what else you have to offer at your farm. Again, I really don't want to single you out but again it feels like you are using this discussion board as free advertising for the horses you have for sale. I will bet I am not the only one who feels this way but I am probably the only one who will come out and say it. :-) Just stirring the pot as I seem to do all too well!! Thanks, Beth Gerst .
