This message is from: Logans - Willows Edge Farm LLC Congrats to all the kids - as well as Patti Jo!! As an instructor, they are as much a part of you as you are of them and that of course shines brightly when they do so well. :) For any of you in the mid-west looking for a trainer, I can say with all enthusiasm that Patti Jo does an exceptional job. The stallion we bought from her many years ago, Fair Acres Ole, continues to impress those who see him work both in halter, harness and under saddle. At our new farm in Idaho, the trainer we've hired is absolutely in love with his talent and abilities. We give Ole lots of credit, but know that Patti Jo's touch is VERY evident in that work. Thank you Patti!! There was a handful of us first and second level riders, but you have to love Fjords. Willing and Steady can come thru for you many times! There are horses that might have better movement in that they have suspension, huge big gaits, etc but. they also are rearing, bucking, jumping over the dressage ring, riders scratching classes due to bad behavior. Just so nice not to have to worry about any of that! We don't have our leg yields down well enough or our lengthening in the trot. Our lengthening in the canter is good. So, once we get these 2 moves down we'll be moving up to 2nd level. Plus I am positive we'll be moving up in our percentage as these 2 are not consistent yet. He's such a smart boy, just fun to work with. We've been consistently in the mid 60's both schooling and rated shows, so was thrilled to finally get into the 70's! Anyway, just wanted to brag on Sebastian. The judge said it was a joy to watch and judge our tests. That was nice to read. J Patti Jo Walter & Sherette's Greenacres Sebastian! I've been having a tough time loading Tessa this summer. She'd hop on the trailer, two forefeet up, backfeet down, stand there and survey her domain. My trainer said I had two choices: fight her or wait her out. I chose to wait her out. So I got a step stool and a book and waited. An hour and a half later, she'd decide to come home. Fortunately people at the barn where I ride understood what I was trying, so they did not come at us with an "I'll show you" approach or humiliate me. To be honest I had some amazing peaceful time with her. We may well have enjoyed each other's company a little too much. But it was getting old. I got all kinds of suggestions having to do with force. Tessa and me and force don't get along. Just that day I read about broodmares in Texas who hated being loaded in Karen Pryor's Reaching the Animal Mind. A grad student used a target and a clicker and within a few hours had the mares loading happily. They became friendlier to their people and could be trailered. Tessa is not a rogue, though it wouldn't take much to turn her into one as far as trailering goes. You even imply force and she puffs up almost speaking, "Bring it on." Sure I could assert my bossdom, but at what cost? I'd already been seriously dumped because of trainers asserting theirs with her. She's had some negative experiences with the trailer. (I have discovered a key to this horse is that while she is quiet, she is not a made horse. She has a lot of green around the edges, including, trailering.) So I took a Strongid C lid, my clicker, and some oats. I've heard oats get a horse chewing and thinking. We'd played the target game away from the trailer and then took it there. She jumped on. I held the target. She touched her nose. Click. Treat. I held the target a little further in. Nose touch. Click and treat. She stepped forward. If the target was too far away, I'd back up a bit. Tessa would move further in, touch her nose. Now she loads in less than five minutes. And our relationship is even sweeter than it was before. We are free to work on our trot. She is learning how to hold herself up in a steady rhythm. We've begun canter work. And I am deeply grateful for Robin Young, a hunter trainer, who lives five minutes away. Re: Brag alert! x2
This message is from: Starfire Farm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Congratulations Cythia and Teddy! We are very proud of you both. Teddy is one of those awesome combinations of a forward thinking, confident, well-moving horse who is also pretty to look at, that can help change the perception of those who think Fjords can't be competitive. We think that Teddy and Cynthia are a great match and look forward to greater things to come. Teddy (aka Starfire Chiron) is by BDF Obelisk out of Slomiet, a beautiful mare imported from Holland, granddaughter of (elite) Dutch mare, Sungard and the impressive (preferente) Dutch stallion, Toddy. While Teddy was doing his thing at the driving show, his dad, Obie, was participating in a Piaffe/Passage clinic with a Spanish Baroque style trainer, Manual Trigo, who came from Costa Rica. Obie was working on perfecting his piaffe "in hand," the beginnings of passage, as well as Spanish Walk, in long lines, in the style of the Spanish Riding School and the French Cadre Noir. We also worked on the same exercises under saddle. Obie worked alongside 10 other horses (two other stallions) the majority being Andalusians, Lusitanos, one Shire and a Paso Fino. Definitely company in which a Fjord is not usually seen. Obie was the star of the clinic! He was very collected and demonstrated that he is really understanding how to carry himself in such extreme collection on his own while keeping the correct rhythm in piaffe. Manuel thought he would be confirmed in piaffe by the next clinic, which will be held in about six weeks. Besides that, he looked so cute with his tail tied up in a Doma Vaquera style knot. actually, he is supposed to look serious, but it really was cute..Wish I had photos! Maybe next time. We have a full sister to Teddy for sale, Starfire Elektra. She is absolutey beautiful. She is three years old, stands at least 14hh and has wonderful movement. She will be an eye-catcher for sure (already is, actually). She did sustain an injury to her left knee over a year ago. She has a very small bone fragment in her knee, therefore, although she has demonstrated no sign of lameness for over a year (even when she tears around the pasture with her buddies) we cannot guarantee that she will stay sound with regular work. She's just being started now and we will take things slowly. We also have a 1/2 brother to Teddy, just coming one year old. He is by Thordal out of Slomiet and has serious potential to be a breeding stallion. He is at least 13.3hh (his mother's height) with very nice movement. We can tell already that the canter is going to be a breeze for him. He has his dad's dark coloration and GREAT hair! A thick mane and forelock with a wonderful black stripe and a very thick, curly tail. Very pretty head with a nice eye a well set neck and wonderful throatlatch that allows him to flex easily at the poll. Definitely one to watch. Congratulations again, Cynthia and Teddy. Keep up the good work! Beth Cynthia Madden wrote: This message is from: "Cynthia Madden" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Starfire Chiron (aka Teddy) went to his first pleasure show this weekend. We participated as a training opportunity without expectations but Teddy did very well! He placed 2nd in Presentation with my oldest harness and in a metal cart but the judge gave him points for his impulsion and extended trot and we beat much nicer turnouts. I was immensely surprised and pleased. He also won the Maiden Pleasure Working Class and took 3rd in the Championship class. We also took 3rd in Reinsmanship. I was very proud of my boy! The judge really liked his gaits and gave me some ideas for improving his cart's balance, etc. Overall, we did so much better than we anticipated. This message is from: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi List, I just took my 3 year old gelding, Tonka, on his first big trail ride and we had a wonderful time. I went with a friend who was driving her paint pony put to her puddle jumper. We rode through orchards, on the street, under the freeway, right next to the freeway (there was a fence of course). Dogs came barking out to meet us, motorcycles flew by, horses galloped along side in their pastures, etc. Tonka was a joy and not afraid of anything. He stopped and waited patiently while I picked a kiwi from a vine without getting off even though this put his head under the vines. I was even able to eat a sandwich while going along. My friend couldn't believe how calm my pony was for being a three year old. I feel so fortunate to have found this nice breed and to have gotten such fine horses. Tomas is just starting out this year learning how to ride, he was driven for a number of years by Theriene and Bob Gudknecht, I got him in the spring. He LOVES to jump. Sometimes too much. :-)) He was just great at the show, the boy NEVER refuses a jump and has a GREAT backend to get over anything. He is rather amazing, as he has jumped everything on the farm and it's his first year, never running out, never refusing, just jump! So, we were very proud of him. We brought two others from the farm, non Fjords. Neither of those placed in their classes, so it was pretty special of Tomas to place! The Carson City Equestrian Alliance is a great group of people and your trail trials are so easy going yet at the same time the obstacles are challenging. Your Fjords are truly an asset to the breed, the four of them were the talk of the trail trial. I was approached by three people who were very interested in them. Re: Brag alert - Quinn's debut at Novice Level eventing
This message is from: Emma Bicknell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Dagrun, That sounds fantastic, big hugs for Quinn. Stories like that really inspire me to get out there and do things with my ponies! Congratulations! Em Dagrun Aarsten wrote: This message is from: "Dagrun Aarsten" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello everybody, I haven't kept up with the list lately but hope horses and people are all doing well. This Saturday Quinn and I made our debut at Novice level eventing at Travis Air Force Base equestrian center near Sacramento. Last week, Quinn and I seemed a little out of sync, and we somehow couldn't agree on simple things like canter transitions, so my expectations for the dressage were just to keep him as light and responsive as possible without going for perfection. I was very relieved when everything suddenly seemed to come together during the warm-up. We had a few moments where he was tempted to jump the rail again, and as all the other riders, we struggled with the serpentine pattern (two loops only, and the arena was more 15x40 than 20x40, which makes that almost impossible), and had a hint of a canter stride on a trot diagonal, plus a little sideways step in the last halt, but scored a respectable 64.5 % (35.5 penalty points). Then off to walking the cross-country course. Novice Level is 2'6" to 2'9". Somehow, at Travis, the jumps always seem a little smaller than the maximum, so I was expecting a nice little course similar to the things we practised in the clinic two weeks earlier. Not so! Jump number 3 was a wide table, just "hanging in the air" (no groundline at all) about 2'9" tall and probably as wide(deep). I looked at it and realized we have never seen anything that tricky before. Jump 5 a-b-c was a coffin-type combination. with a log jump, then a short down slope to a ditch with water, then a short up-slope to a plank wall. And so it went. One solid oxer that was also close to maximum height and width, again no ground line, on a pretty heavy uphill slope. All in all, a total of 18 jumps over a long course, most around the maximum height we've ever schooled and 2-3 past what we've ever practiced. Oh well, I decided to give it a try and then retire if Quinn lost heart or got really tired. So off we went, Quinn was rather slow over the first 2 jumps, so I made sure to wake him up before the scary table number 3 - he was quite surprised, and we had a conversation more or less like this: Dagrun: "please jump this terrifying table here in front of us" Quinn: "OK, OK, WHAT! That one???" (smaller jump to the side of it) Dagrun: "YES" Quinn: "Do you think I can do that?" Dagrun: "I know you can!" Quinn: "OK ma'am. Jumping. Hang on!" After that I knew this could be good. We cleared the coffin without faults as the FIRST HORSE that day, almost all horses stopped at the water, except Quinn plus the last rider of the day (just behind us), I was already getting tired but very excited, off to a combination of two enormous cross-rails made with fat logs, big but very inviting. Then up the hill to the BIG oxer - a tap of the whip at the approach to tell him that we needed some extra impulsion for that one, and he flew over, and so it went. Every time he wasn't too sure about a jump he slowed down to have a look and then hopped over, so it wasn't always nice and fluid but WHAT A HORSE! After the "fake" water complex (no water in it, only sand), Quinn threw in a huge buck for fun, and I heard one of the fence judges shouting something to me (I should have listened) before we galloped on. From there it just went better and better. Towards the end I slowed him down to a trot coming downhill, for safety AND to let him catch his breath a little before the last couple of jumps. When I pointed him to the next jump, he picked up a balanced canter and sailed over. I was in ecstacy as we galloped over the finish line and everyone was cheering. Quinn has always been a favorite at Travis but last time he did baby jumps and never showed them that he can actually jump like that. Stadium jumping was another story. Quinn knows a little too well that these thin striped poles knock down pretty easily. The more substantial a jump is, the better he will jump it. So I knew this would be interesting when most of the jumps were single poles(!) hanging alone in the air at 2'6" or so. Add to that a horse that is still breathing after cross-country... and a rider that has finished most of her focus energy supplies... It wasn't too pretty, but we came around with only 3 knockdowns, although we touched at least 6 of the 11 jumps. Quinn took it all like a Sunday walk in the park, which is not necessarily good when the goal is jumping, and he happily knocked down pole after pole! The pole from jump number 10 was balancing on top of his knees for 2-3 strides (or that's what it felt like) but that didn't scare him from jumping the final number 11 with the same cheerful attitude! Oh well, not too bad, all things considered. Then, f

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Thanks Joe and Ursula for your kind words. I will remember them in the months to come when we are busy working with our horses and need to pull some inner strength from somewhere. I'm sorry that I did not get to meet you Joe. I have read your posts to the list and would love to have put a face to a name. NFR Leika (Babe), our three year old mare purchased from Brian Jacobsen as a weanling, did receive her blue ribbon in confirmation. I was so happy I almost cried. She went on to receive an 83.5 in intro driving for a blue ribbon and a 94.75 in her intro draft for a blue ribbon. We are very proud of Babe and thank Brian for breeding such a fine fjord to work with. Lest I not get too big headed, I might as well tell the other side of the story. Both judges commented on Babe's driving score sheet that Babe has lots of potential, but one added that - driver needs to get better so they can help the horse. I welcome the comment and will get busy!! The evaluations are truly a place where fjord owners can come together, see the kind of horses that are being bred/imported and the training level that can be achieved. After all, we are not competing and supposedly could all be perfect 10's!!! I hope they, the evaluations, will continue and possibly even more performance tests be added. What about dressage tests, pairs competition, etc.? Mary Harvey

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Congradulations Pat!! So happy that Jim and I could be there to see you and Prydarson perform. Your stallion is not only georgeous, but he has such a personality, and as proven by your test scores, well trained. Maybe you two can have a little rest on your laurels this winter. Congradulations to everyone else that attended the Morrisville evaluations, also. Jim and I sure did enjoy meeting so many new fjord owners and their horses. Our aisle mates were Marcey Baer and Susan Cook with Zoe (wonderful girls, all of them), Phillip and Deborah Juran and their wonderful daughters and mares (these three little girls are as well trained as any of the fjords), The Sorum's from Ohio, who came such a long way and brought many beautiful and well-behaved fjords, Deb Coggiola whose stallion FC Molson does it all, Van Zimmerman was there with Tasja (one big beautiful mare) and, of course, Old Hickory Farm with Flotren and they also showed two beautiful mares. I truly enjoyed watching the performance of all these horses and hopefully learned from them. We came away feeling like we had known many of these owners much longer than 2 days. We don't want to forget that Curt Pierce, site cordinator, and his wonderful assistant, Christine, worked long and hard days. There were many site conditions because of the hurricane that had to be reevaluated. My hat off to the judges - what a job they have - I know they were freezing sometime, but were always very intently watching the performance. A "Good Job" from this performer. And last, but certainly not least, I, personally enjoyed meeting Ursula Jensen. Her vast experience with driving, etc. certainly was apparent by her comments. I welcomed her suggestions for my horse and enjoyed hearing her comments on other horses. Wish I could be a mouse and follow her from show to show - boy would I learn. Mary and Jim Harvey

I have an idea that it would be a blast. - at that 3 blues, 1 red, 2 yellows and a tie for reserve grand champion novice - could have been better but Mel wouldn't go in reinmanship (didn't think he was good enough). He definitely is good enough. They both proved that. Pilot error and they went off course in the jumping, making such a tight turn to go over the wrong jump Mark Leone would have been proud of them. That class, of course, was WITHOUT the cart. Now that would have been an interesting class with the cart though. My son always wanted Niki do a "Carriage Jumping" course with Malla! Re: Re: Brag Alert
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Congratulations to Anne and Wez. I know that there was alot of hardwork involved in getting to that level, and I think it's fabulous that you perservered (sp?). Good luck in the coming season I know we all look forward to hearing more . I would like to respond to Carol's comments several posts back regarding Fjords in Combined Driving. She wrote I think Fjords competing in the world of dressage is particularly significant since they are competing against huge horses bred specifically for the discipline. --- In Combined Driving, Fjords compete in the Pony Division, and I've always felt they had a significant advantage there because of their size and strength. Last fall at Fair Hill International Marnix had to compete with the horses as there were no other ponies in the Intermediate Division. There were 11 horses (yes some fancy, huge WB) and alot of World Singles hopefuls. Marnix placed second. I really enjoyed having that much competition as there are generally few single ponies of any breed in the upper levels and having 11 horses certainly made it more interesting. Our big advantage after dressage where Marnix excells was the fact that we were smaller than the horses and could take the inside routes on the marathon and I drove very badly at FH. If there was a post to hit I hit it In the pony division it is almost impossible for me to beat a small pony in the hazards. Hence the fact that the minis won the marathon in the prelim division at Fall Gladstone last year beating the Dartmoors and Haflingers handily on time. So at the lower levels a Fjord's size is not an advantage especially if there are really small ponies competing. I remain convinced that the way to go is win dressage so you don't have to go for broke on the marathon. Marnix more than proved that he was competitive against the horses in Combined Driving as well as Ridden Dressage. Hope that this isn't interpreted as flaming, just my thoughts and clarifications... Look at how successful the Fjords are becoming in all the discip[lines, and it's so early in the season yet. This is truly exciting. Perhaps more people will be convinced that Fjords are an option in competition rather than thinking of them only as nice family horses of mediocre talent. Vivian Creigh

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Arthur Rivoire) Goodday from Carol Rivoire at Beaver Dam Farm in Nova Scotia - Sorry! It looks like I did misinterpret Ursula's remarks about 'horsepeople's egos being tied to their horses accomplishments.' I was concerned she was criticizing people who shared (bragged?) their successes with the List, and was fearful that this might inhibit further contributions. --- Apparently, if no one else read it that way, then I must have read it wrong, which is great, as I hope many more people will let us know what they're doing with their Fjords. Re: "Brag Alert" ????
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Arthur Rivoire) Hi Everybody from Carol Rivoire at Beaver Dam Farm in Nova Scotia - On today's List, Ursula Jensen urged Anne Appleby to tell us about her latest accomplishments in dressage. I'd sure love to hear the news. In fact, I'd love to hear everything Anne has to say about her experiences with Fjords in drssage, and I'd love to hear it on a regular basis. --- A column in the Fjord Herald, for instance, would be most interesting and useful. And even more interesting and beneficial to the breed would be articles and photos from Anne published in national magazines and newspapers. I can tell you there is a dire need for this type of article. I am royally ticked off that all anyone ever reads about the Fjord breed is the ancient press release from the NFHR - "The Norwegian Fjord is one of the oldest breeds dating back to the Vikings, etc. . . on and on . . . blah, blah, blah." - Excruciatingly Boring! I'll have more to say on that later, but for now I want to talk about Ursula's remarks. Ursula said > >Anne is probably the only horseperson that I know who's self esteem is not >directly tied to her accomplishments with her horses...she is totally >balanced and modest on that level and has an incredible ability to remain >objective. If I'm interpreting Ursula's remarks correctly, she's criticizing Sue Banks for telling us about her dressage accomplishments with her young mare, Lilly. She's also criticizing Elaine for sharing her dressage wins with Lilly's brother, BDF Idar. And, she's criticizing me (the breeder) for being proud and pleased that these two owners have done so well with horses from Beaver Dam Farm. Give me a break. If being pleased and proud that the horses we produce on our farm turn out to be quality, pleasurable animals, then color me guilty. And I guess my ego is tied to the quality of our product (the horses.) Shouldn't it be? If not, does that mean if we produce poor, useless, dangerous Fjords, I shouldn't care? I shouldn't feel shame and remorse? Should I thorow up my hands taking no responsiblity, and say - "It's not my fault." --- Sorry, that's not the way I care to do things. I think Ursula's criticism is discouraging and destructive to people who might like to share their accomplishments with their Fjords. Hopefully, List contributors won't take it to heart, as I'm sure 99.9% of us want to hear what people are doing, whether it's a great performance in competition, or a great performance on the back forty. Whether in public or in private, Fjords are much much more than cute and cuddly. They are performers! And it's high time the world knew it. So, forget false modesty. Let's promote our breed. I'd love to hear more from Gayle Ware, and all the good reining and cutting stuff she does. And I'd love to hear from the endurance riders, and the foxhunting riders. And the draft people. Fjordhorses are not just horses that can do a lot of things . . . . They do a lot of things very well Regards, Carol Rivoire Carol and Arthur Rivoire Beaver Dam Farm Fjords II R.R. 7 Pomquet Antigonish County Nova Scotia B2G 2L4 902 386 2304 http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/beaverdf
Re: Brag Alert
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] OK Ursula, Wez did make his first formal Grand Prix debut this past weekend . It has been 13 years of hard work and he did a respectable job and got a decent score. Kari McClain actually rode him for this first ride to test it out while I work out some coordination issues. She is my instructor and mentor and has been the person behind all that Wez and I have accomplished over the years. She is a most remarkable person not only extremely skilled as a rider but also as a teacher which is a rare combination. She has taken several horses to Grand Prix including an Apaloosa off the rodeo string, a thoroughbred and a quarter horse and is a firm believer that with correct training and hard work any horse and rider can do well in dressage. She was the person who said of Wez when he was three, "Let's see how far he can go..." It has been a long hard road on a horse/breed not particularly well built for the upper levels of this sport. So here we are. My turn next. Anne Appleby

Re: Brag Alert
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dear Sue, I read your "brag alert" and had to comment because I have been showing a Fjord this season with great luck, too. I purchased BDF IDAR from the Rivoire's in Nova Scotia this past year. He had been a carriage horse for the last few years but quickly took to the dressage work. I've taken him to about 5 shows, each getting progressively larger and he has consistently scored between 63-67% in Training level Test 3 and 4. His last show was a big show in Los Angeles, where he was the only non-warmblood entry and he finished 2nd with a 65% in classes of 14 top horses. He only needs one more score before he qualifies for the USDF Regional Championships and I know he can get it. So enjoy your Fjord in dressage. If they have good gaits, they can be very competitive.
