I'm glad to hear that everything arrived safely. I'd hoped that the
grooming tools would come in handy; those thick Fjord manes and tails
tend to be rather hard on grooming equipment.

> How are those neat ornaments done? It looks like photos in color on
> slag glass, very neat.

The fused glass ornaments are made using a special type of printer
paper. I convert photos to black-&-white, then print them out with a
laser printer (one that has a high percentage of ferrous material in
the toner; mine's a cheap HP LaserJet). Then I trim the photos down
and soak them briefly in water until the layers of the paper begin to
separate. Next, I carefully slide the transparent layer with the photo
on it off of the other layer and onto a piece of fusing glass (one or
more layers) that I've cut to the desired size and shape. The whole
thing then goes in the kiln for fusing, which takes about 8-9 hours in
total, including the controlled cool-down from the peak temperature of
around 1300 degrees Fahrenheit. During the firing process, the paper
and non-ferrous toner components burn away, leaving behind the ferrous
content, which oxides and fuses with the glass to create the
sepia-toned image. It's a neat technique, though it took some trial &
error to get it right. My first attempt using a Samsung printer was a
total loss - Samsung toner apparently contains *no* ferrous content
and the photos vanished completely during firing!

The other, non-photo, ornament (or cabochon to use on a necklace; it
can be used for either purpose) is also fused glass, only in that
case, the Fjord head is sheet copper which I hand embossed, using
another photo of my Fjord as the template.

I hope the DVDs make the task pass enjoyably.

> The photos of your Fjord in Xmas garb are priceless.

They're both pretty good sports about letting me do silly things to
them. Dawna tolerates it; Donnie loves it because, hey, it's
attention!

And if anyone else is curious about the Xmas Fjord photos, there's a
few of them here:

Secret Santa Thanks : R.Taylor, Straw Hat Stables

I was VERY GOOD this year - the package said, "Don't Open Until Christmas",
and I DID NOT OPEN IT!!! (A very rare thing for me!)
My "Secret Santas" did not include a note
BUT - I got red and green M&M's that had "Rune and Catherine Lassesen" and
"Hestehaven" printed on them. How cool is that?
I received the most awesome "cowboy" rope halter and lead rope - in a bright
yellow and blue pattern that even I can't lose in the snow (or mud this
December so far!) The Farrier also sends his "Thanks" for the sturdy halter now
in use on Thumper.
AND I also got a beautiful pale blue, soft as mink sweatshirt with a Fjord
drawing and "Hestehaven" lettered in white - that I've had to keep my Mom from
snitching (she's tried TWICE already, and it isn't evem New Year's yet!)
So, to my Secret Santas - Catherine and Rune - Thank you very much for the
wonderful, useful gifts! Sincerely, Rhonda Taylor

"...Are you on the right list??? I believe the S S is on the CDL???

Yep, Jerry - am on the right list. :-) *Many* list on the net have a
SS each year. I hosted the SS for the PapFriends list last year, and was a
participant on the FjordHorse list's SS. :-)

"...the Fjordhorse list has had "Secret Santa" also..Cynthia Madden headed
it up last year I think..."

Yep, I do believe she was the host for the SS here, last year. She did a
great job!

"...that would be awsome to ahve it! How would we do it though?..."

First - someone volunteers and is approved the list owner to host the SS.
At least - that's how it's been done on other lists, so am geussing same here.
;-)Then the host posts a guidelines to the list. The list members
send (usually a private email, not to the list) their information to the host.
At the deadline for entries date, the host then matches up all who sent in
an entry, to another list member. Works out that each "giver" is then a
"receiver" - so no one gets left out. When I hosted the PapFriends SS last
year
- we had one odd member, so I sent out two gifts, so that person was not left
out. Sometimes the SS person chooses to stay annonimous - sometimes it's a
fun geussing game to see if one recognizes the clues of who their SS was.
Varies from list SS to list SS. That's about all there is to it - LOTS of fun!

Hello, again, folks!

Thought I'd post the question again - as have not heard back from the list -

Is anyone hosting the Secret Santa (gift swap) this year? Am geussing this
is about the time to begin organizing it, if all the participants will have
time to gift shop for their Secret Santas.

I truely enjoyed being part of the SS last year - hoping it happens again
this year!

If no one is planning to host the SS for this year - I'd be happy to
volunteer to do it. I've organized SS's in the past. It's a lot of work - but
well
worth it. Everyone seems to always have such a good time. :-)

In the future this might not be such a good idea. You should always put a
return address on the gift. You can use a friend's or relative's instead of

We had a Morgan mare that came to us with a lot of proud flesh between her
front legs. She had impaled herself on a metal fence post. When we saw the
injury it was several years old. The mare was fine and we had the proud
flesh surgically removed and it did not come back. She had no lasting
effects from either the injury or the surgery.

Oh Well, I goofed wouldn't be the first time probably won't be the last.

What a day, yesterday we had a total of 8 inches of snow, which is wonderful,
we certainly can us the moisture.
At 4:30pm my friend Linda called to say her fjord mare was bleeding and she
didn't know what to do. I told her to ball up a towel and put some pressure
on the wound and call the vet. My husband who works nights had taken the
truck because of the snow and so all I had was my low slung car to get up the
hill and out of my unplowed road. But I did it, and got to Linda's. No vets
wanted to come out from Albuquerque, they only had rain no snow, and all the
vets in our area were gone. Finally after over an hour we found a vet to come
out. The wound on Traviata is between her front legs and is at least 8 inches
deep, how she did it we don't know. It looks as if nothing major was damaged
but as far as any damage to the nerves in her front legs we don't know. The
vet recomended the wound be left open and allowed to heal from the inside
out. Trav was in a lot of pain aand didn't want to move but never stopped
nibbling on her hay, even when the vet put his hand to the wrist into the
wound. After a number of shots for pain, tetnus, and antibiotics she was

You're more than welcome. We had a great time. Thank you, Head Elf Michele,
for coordinating.

Actually, they were photographs that I had taken with our digital camera. I had
been waiting patiently and hopefully for snow so I could take the photos. Went
out and took them when it finally did snow, then did a little digital magic with
the computer. The same with the poster. It's a picture that Sandy
took while I was working 4 of our horses at liberty in our our "round pen" to
get them to go 4 abreast. Our "round pen" is actually a 60' square pole barn.
The horses were going into the light made by the door. You can't see the 4th
horse because he was in the dark. The ones you do see are BDF John Arthur, BDF
Magnum and BDF Obelisk, so we call it "the Three Brothers." A little computer
graphic magic and Voila! You have a "painting." We decided to make it into a
poster and have had some copies printed. I've been trying to make the time to
get it up on our website, but the Christmas cards took precedence. Besides,
they were fun!

For everyone else, I'll let you know when the poster is finally on the site.
I've been playing with that, also, trying to be artistic. Unfortunately,
Comupter is not my first language. Horse is (no...I don't whisper.;-) with
Art as my second language, so I'm finding some of the literal computer stuff can
be limiting. Just need to find the time to learn the ins and outs.

Sue, and everyone else, have a Very Merry Christmas!

Beth

To the Head Elf,
I'm not sure whether I am supposed to reply on the list or privately to
your message to me, but here's the answer to my Santa's question

Alas, I have only one fjordie, and no homestead to call my own (at least
not YET) so I have no farm name. When I do, I'l have to think of
something really COOL to call it though! My SO has a fir tree farm,
so..someday, maybe we'll both have a firry fjord farm! (Really,
dear, it's you I love, not your 60 acres of land!)

If my Secret Santa could help out with any arrangements of the
matrimonial kind, I'd leave some extra cookies and carrots by the
fireplace.

Also, Head Elf, could you please contact me ASAP on another matter!
I've been trying to contact you off the list but haven't heard back from
you.

Thank you! and thanks, Santa

I'm sorry about your doberman. My parents had the most wonderful doberman
named Duke. He was just the perfect dog.
My daughter could crawl all over him, dress him up, and string him with
necklaces and he wouldn't complain a bit.
He seemed to know that she was a pup and all should be tolerated. Yet he
was still a great protector of "his house" and
"his family". Bells drove him crazy and watching Wheel of Fortune filled
the house with barking!
Strangely he died from symptoms that sound the same as your dog's, the vet
never could exactly figure it out, at first thought that it was Lyme
disease, later said that it was some kind of immune problem. At least five
years later we all still get tears in our eyes when we talk of him. I know
how hard it is to lose an animal that has been part of your family.

Have a happy and safe New Year,

Dianne

Greetings Dianne Turcotte,
>From warm and sunny So. Cal.
I'm so glad you like your Fjordhorse earrings, I had a hard time not keeping
them for myself! Merit and Ashley sound like a great pair, I hope your
Christmas was wonderful. I'm still waiting for my first Fjord, a lovely baby
filly named Amma will soon be on her way to Rancho Zen Rodeo from the Shota
Fjords in the Blue Mountains of Oregon. We can hardly wait. We fell in love
with Fjords last year after meeting Lisa and Jeff Pederson's and Margaret and
Barry Strachan's at a driving show. After many years with wonderful Arabs I
was looking for something a little less "reactive" as I don't bounce as well
as I used to, and my non-horsey hubby was enchanted by them as well. Our
Christmas was saddened by the sudden and unexpected loss of our 5 year old
Dobie bitch Dakota due to a total breakdown of her immune system. We are glad
to have Amma to look forward to and the fjord list to learn from during this
sad time. The recent posts on losses and the Rainbow Bridge have been
especially meaningful. I'm glad to have been your "secret santa", keep in
touch and have a great new year!

 Well Denise,

What I have been doing lately is that when ever Meritt gets down for a bow
I jump up, and lean on her or actually jump on. One time after my jumping on
she actually bowed back down on her own to ask me to get off.

I was suprised and got off immediately. I really don't have any other
advice other than this was an every day training session in the beginning.
She is a really great girl and I usually did this in a small pasture setting
with just a halter and no lead. Just kind of her choice to cooperate or
not. I think that it may be just the Fjord way but if I really push her in
a situation that she doesn't prefer, she won't do it.
Don't know if I have been any help.

Happy Holidays,
