Re: my boys
This message is from: Krissie England bluerunf...@yahoo.com Kim, I just had a thought. You said you live near a chicken farm and they had recently cleaned out their coops. Is there any chance the horses were able to get ahold of any chicken feed? Like maybe pellets that blew into their field? I ask because we also have chickens and my vet warned me to be very careful that none of my other animals get into the chicken feed. It contains arsenic, which is a necessary nutrient for chickens (so it has to be in their feed), but is poisonous to the other animals. I am paranoid about keeping the chicken feed totally out of reach of my other animals for that reason. I am SO glad to hear that your boys are home and doing well! We had my husband's mare at Leesburg vet hospital for a week when she colicked and didn't know if we would be able to bring her home. It was awful! Luckily, she too had a good outcome, and this was several years ago, but I will never forget that feeling. Re: my boys-arsenic in chicken food
This message is from: Krissie England bluerunf...@yahoo.com I agree that it is a very slight chance that the problem was caused by chicken feed, but it seemed worth mentioning since they have not found any other cause. I seem to remember Kim saying that the vet thought the horses had ingested a toxin back at the beginning of the illness. Plus, my vet felt it was worth talking to me about it, and I do respect his advice. I would think they would have to eat a largish amount for there to be any ill effect, but I am no expert. There is no admitting that there is arsenic in chicken feed, without it the chickens will die. There was a big scuffle on facebook about it, where it went around like it was a problem, which it is not. But people will present facts out of context to get a reaction and that is what happened. I posted quite a few replies to my friends along the lines of you will not die from eating chicken, nor be exposed to harmful arsenic from the meat. You will not be exposed to arsenic unless you actually eat their feed, the meat is clean because they use the arsenic :) Of course, the important thing here is that the boys are HOME and on the mend! I just know if it was me, I would be going crazy trying to figure out what happened so I could prevent it happening again. JM2C, YMMV, etc, etc :) Krissie On Wednesday, January 29, 2014 5:04 PM, Mary Ofjord ma...@boreal.org wrote: This message is from: Mary Ofjord ma...@boreal.org What wonderful news that the horses are back at home and will recover. Re: Update on the boys
This message is from: Gail Russell g...@zeliga.com Do beware of their feet. We had a horse that had a gut problem that they thought was Potomac Horse Fever. He recovered, but the inflammation resulted in founder with horrible sinking Apparently, that type of rotation is harder to treat and recover from from than normal grass founder. We eventually had to put the horse down. After that experience, I would absolutely say that the horses should not be in shoes, and I would even consider putting them in some kind of padded foot appliance (styrofoam blocks, Soft Ride boots, or something that would help stop the potential descent). I have had two horses get even mild fevers and had BOTH develop laminitis. The fever was so mild that the laminitis was the first clue that they were systemically ill (pigeon fever and a jaw infection). I would consult the vet, and I would consider arguing or getting a second opinion if they say there is no danger. Ooruk plays with the big boys
This message is from: Robin Churchill [EMAIL PROTECTED] Ooruk (6 year old gelding Orka X Maite)made his dressage debut at first level this month. First we went to a schooling show and he scored 69.7% for a second place with the top score being 70% on First Level Test 1. Then last weekend we went to Wellington which for the non-dressage people is the winter mecca of dressage for the whole U.S. (OK so it is too early in the season for all the Olympians to be there yet, but nevertheless). He placed very well in all three classes with some very tough judges and only minor errors. 69% and second place for first level test 1, 63.4% and again second place for first level test 2 and 66.4% and 3rd place for training level test 3 (the winner of that class was a grand prix rider on a young horse). Almost all of the other horses were warmbloods--there weren't many non-traditional breeds there and the classes each had over 10 horses--so I was thrilled with him. He was certainly a horse of a different color among all the giant bay and black horses and got a lot of attention as the only fjord there. I doubt if the other competitors were happy being bested by a pony but didn't hear anything negative so they were good sports about it. Anyway, he thinks he is a star and now is requesting to be called Sir Ooruk. Robin in SW Florida which is the sahara rather than the mecca of dressage Never miss a thing. This message is from: Robin Churchill [EMAIL PROTECTED] No they didn't have a photographer there and I didn't think to take a camera. We do have one video out of the three rides because due to some confusion that I won't bore you with the details of the other rides didn't get taped. I have shown him at 3 schooling and 2 recognized shows over the past 2 1/2 years and only one time was there a photographer which I think is sort of strange. I was actually looking on some of the equine photographer sites to see if any had a schedule of shows or events they were going to. When I lived in Virginia, it seemed like all the shows had photographers who would take a bunch of pictures of your horse and then send you the proofs in hopes you would buy them or more recently post them on a website for you to order. I don't know what the deal is in Florida. The next time I will definitely take a camera. This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Congratulations Lisa! I REALLY enjoyed reading about your teams going up against the big boys. I love drafts and would have died to see a show like that. Well, I can only afford so many excursions per year : ) Just another reminder of how wonderful our versatile Fjords are... Brigid in CA
The PONY Drafts showed with the BIG BOYS !
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello all ! Just wanted to let you know what happend last weekend when we showed our Fjords at Parowan Utah, Invitational Draft Horse Show. As I said before, it was a big showwith several large farms comming right from the Grass Valley, LA Co. Fair circuit shows. They are trying to make this a West Coast Triple Crown show series, and from a first year attendance, both from exibitors and crowds, they will for sure ! Most of them, headed off to Sand Point now, that I think go's off this weekend. We brought a pair, and showed in 4 classes. They were with the big drafts, and had no classes offered for light horses or draft ponies. My big worry was, NOT to get run over, OR hold up any of the teams out there, for lack of speed. Those big boys MOVE OUT ! LOL. I went to the show on the first day, just to watch, and pick up our credentials. I am so glad I did, 'cause I was able to observe what the judge was looking for. MUCH differant than ADS style of driving, with some clear rules of the road, so to speak. We are used to showing 3 trots. Not differant speedsjust the cadence changes. Even your first trot, shouldnt be much faster than your Trot On extended trot. Well.the judge was only calling for TROT ! no extention, or changes. TROT means : HAUL BUTT. Also, he did call for a walk, but it was only for maybe 10 seconds, at the most, then back to a TROT ! There is also NO PASSING !This helped us to figure out how NOT to get run over, LOLOL Most important to him, was the line back, in your final line up. Then he called out his first 3-4 choices...let the others wait in the line up, and had a run-off of his first few choices. It really did help to watch him judge a few classes without showing in them, and learn what he was looking for. I also informed the judge, during a break, that we were bringing in the Fjords the next day, and asked him if he had any suggestions for us. He was visibly delighted to hear that we were comming and said, nope, just glad to have you all bring out the Nordic drafts The next day, we arrived early, to give us plenty of time to warm up alongside of the very noisy, huge hitch's. Im glad we did, as the Fjords caused a good size crowd of interested people who stayed with us and looked at our pictures and asked questions about the Fjords. One couple came down from Salt Lake area to see the Fjords show...as they are interested in getting some. Alot of Draft people came over to see our 2 vehicles we brought, and wish us well. Kaiser 1/2 yanked off a shoe first thing when we got there, but a nearby exibitor came over with farrier tools and had us squared away quickly. Jeff showed in the first class, mens cart and he took Jule' with a 2 wheel, black Buckeye show cart. He was very outclassed by alot of beautiful scotch collars, braided up manes, ect. but he held up well, and Jule' got a few kinks out in the deep and muddy arena. ( Can you say BUCKING in harness ? ) OMG. Well...it had rained the night before, and the weather was beautiful and crisp. About 72 * actually. She hasnt been touched since Libby, and hadnt been touched before that since our Blue Earth marathon. So.one can hardly blame the girl ! ; ) The temper fits ended though before he went into the arena, just in warmupso all was well, one class down and no wrecks. I took the pair ( Jule ' and Kaiser ) into the Ladies Team class, next. Jule' was a sweaty, nasty looking mess, with their winter coats fully sprung. The Percherons, Clydesdales, and Belgians looked slicked down , barn, show-horse pretty. I must say, though, that we looked pretty cool warming up with some HUGE hitch wagons in the small warm-up ring. I let the pair hear a few wagons come up behind us, then took them out to relax before the class...just then they called us into the arena. I was right across from the entrance, so after 2 teams went byI fell in place behind them. You could almost see the OMG look in the ladies eyes that were CRANKING in behind melike oh NO the Fjords went ahead of us ! Boy howdy they do like them stomping ! The one hitch even warmed up with her husband following her and snapping a bull whip, about 10 ft. behind her horses.and thats enough to un-nerve anyone ! Well.I was NOT going to let my Fjords hold anyone upso basically asked them to MOVE their $#$ out ! They did, and my friends in the grandstands reported that they were step to step together for almost all of the class. When the judge asked for a walkhe stands right in front of you as you go byto see it they are working together well( the anouncer said ) and mine were. I had to get after the outside horse on the corners, as it was slippery with mud, and they tried to slow a bit. In the line-upseveral of the teams fussed a bit...and I had my

Libby show.....with the BIG BOYS !
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello List ! Thanks, everyone for the great time had at the Libby Mt. Fjord show ! You all out-did yourselves, and it was even better than when we made the trip in ' 97. The rain did not seem to slow up anything, and it really made the smoke from all the fires go away. Of course, it could have waited until we had practiced our green tandem hitch instead of deciding to POUR during all 20 min. of it ! All ended well though, the next day as the Unique Hitch class went off without a wreck. ( No minor deal as we were the most BORING hitch out there with a simple tandem ! ) All I can say is that the vidio tapes of this one class might be worth buying it ! I wanted to comment about the thread of everyone competing in classes together. Here in Utah, at least it seems we are able to go show and knock the socks off every judge and knock off most breeds too, BUT, it sure doesnt get my very competitive juices flowing ( WHO ME ? ) like when I enter the ring with people who I have read about, that are on the World Driving teams, or have always been strong contenders on International Driving circuits. Now THATS fun ! I am proud, as always when my horses do well, as in Blue Earth, finishing 1st in our driving classes, and winning Blues in the Evaluation..BUT, I can truely say that the 2nd place behind Ursula Jenson and the 3rd place behind Orville Unrue and Ron Pearson at Libby beats all of that. You cant learn or feel good about a win till you have been pushed and made to perform with the best out there. Spent some time with Anita and Orville at Blue Earth and Libby, and I can say that they are the most down to earth, friendly folks out there. ( Not to mention some of Orvilles storys of misbehavior while out showing with the REALLY BIG BOYS ) I recieved the nicest card from Brian and Ursula Jensen today with a beautiful picture of Jeff entering the ring at Libby with the tandem hitchthe ONLY picture to come out BTW without that ^%$%* chain link fence in the way !Now THATS class ! We were glad to meet you guys too ! Thanks for the compliments, and picture, guys. This is whats fun about showing with superior people.NOT about always winning, but the RIDE along the way. Speaking of class acts.Beth and Sandy at both shows were gracious, funny and always fun to be around. Beth, thanks for the compliments, but YOU were the biggest shock to me with your pair comming so far in such a short time ! Gave me a true run for the $$, and as Sandy said, we THREW down a gauntlet...and Beth picked it up and ran with it !Look for her to be hitting the CDE shows as well as Fjord breed ones, and with the way shes going. its gonna get fun ! ; ) * Before I forget, I want to say that I have NO IDEA what Cynthia, Beth or Michele are talking about. Hands in pockets ? Who...me ? GGG Dumpster diving ? You all need a vacation. Or maybe an increase in medication. ; ) Better fly for now, please try and make it to FJORD CHAT at PetsandVets tomorrow night, Sun. at 9 PM Eastern time, horse room # 1.
