You can use the LocalConnection object to have 2 flash movies talking to each
other.
Both flash movies can then talk to Javascript ;)

[flexcoders] Dynamic font loading

2005-11-22 Thread Philippe Maegerman
There was a thread last week about loading fonts in Flex.
I made a successful try in Flex 2, code here below describes 2 files; one
contains a mx:Text object, loads a second mxml where a @font-face is declared,
then assigns the font to the mx:Text using 'setStyle'.

Opener
==
?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?
mx:Application xmlns:mx=http://www.macromedia.com/2005/mxml; xmlns=*
creationComplete=onInit()
mx:Script
function childLoaded(event){
myText.setStyle('fontFamily', 'myFont');
myText.setStyle('fontSize', 24);
}
function onInit(){
mx.core.Application.application.addEventListener('childAdded', childLoaded)
var t:customFont = new customFont()
mx.core.Application.application.addChild(t)
}
/mx:Script
mx:Canvas id=textContainer width=100% height=100%
mx:Text id=myText text = Hello World!! width=50%/
/mx:Canvas
/mx:Application

customFont.mxml

?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?
mx:Canvas xmlns:mx=http://www.macromedia.com/2005/mxml; xmlns=* width=0
height=0 visible=false

[flexcoders] shameless plug

2005-11-22 Thread ilya Devèrs

Hi,

In one of my projects we use Enterprise
Architect extensively as a requirements capture, uml design, code generation
(Case tool) (all Java: spring, hibernate, JSF)

We just upgraded to version 6, and the
funny thing is that this version also support actionscript round tripping!

It is an awesome tool, and very
affordable.

If you look for a decent UML tool that
supports Actionsscript (2.0) take a look at it.

Cheers,

Ilya

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Web service question

2005-11-22 Thread Steven Webster
Dave,

You can't have thought I'd let this slip ;)

 flame bait
 Show what you have, but to me these situations are the
 biggest proof where abstracted frameworks, especially around
 event dispatching come back to bite you. Something simple
 like clicking a button to fire a service wanders through hard
 to debug framework. Why go through something as abstracted
 as a FrontController/Command/Locator pattern soup to do
 something as simple as fire a service from a button click.
 /flame bait

When you have teams of 30-40 developers, implementing projects with 100s
of different service calls, some of them RemoteObject calls, some
HTTPService calls, and some of them WebService calls, when several of
these service calls have an opportunity to be reused in different
contexts; suddenly, the *lightweight* (let's keep in perspective that
we're talking about a collaboration of 2 or 3 classes here) benefits of
some common architecture start to outweigh the benefits of having people
place their service calls wherever they choose in their own code.

On the issue of debug; when familiar with building applications with
Cairngorm, the application-level abstraction that is introduced over and
above the lower-level Flex framework event model, *speeds* debugging,
and doesn't in fact impinge upon it.

Whenever an application fails, as the result of adding a new use-case,
the debug process is quite simple and methodical:

1) Check event is registered with controller
2) Check that command is instantiated when the event fires
3) Check that execute() entry-point is called when event fires
4) Check that business delegate call is successful

-- confirm that service-call happens over the wire on the server --

5) Check that command receives the results back from the server
6) Check that the model is updated correctly

Those 6 steps above ensure that the user-gesture to business logic
executation and model update has happened correctly. This check is a
quick 2 minute job, after which you can be sure that the problem most
likely rests in your implementation of the view.

I don't ever want to be painted into the position that Cairngorm is the
*only* way to architect a Flex application; if you have your own
infrastructure and architecture in your applications, that's fine too.

But, I will defend that having a methodology behind development, having
an underpinning architecture that aids collaboration, collective
ownership and introduces consistency in development, is at the sacrifice
of testability and debugging.

We've experienced first-hands the benefits of such a microarchitecture,
on a large number of Flex projects as small as 4-5 developers, and as
large as 30-40 developers. I've never experienced the idea that such
architecture introduce complexity ... On the contrary, simplicity is
introduced where complexity otherwise exists.

I share your desire to keep things as simple as possible.
Cairngorm is an implementation of that desire, not a contradiction.

Best wishes,

Steven
PS. I share (and now know who to blame ;) ) your assessment of the
EJB2.0 spec.

[flexcoders] help with custom cell renderer (Flex 1.5)

2005-11-22 Thread flexkinloch
Hi,

i have a checkbox cellrenderer that on click i want to fire a
remoteobject request that passes one of the current datagrid rows
cell values as one of the arguments but cannot get it to work as the
current row is not selected. i need to be able to do one of two
things either access this value programmatically ie item.cellvalue or
programmatically set the current row.
so far i have had limited success with item.cellvalue in that when i
reference this in an if statement it will recognise the value. eg

if(item.cellvalue == 5)
then go do something;

but if i reference it like

remoteobject.method(item.cellvalue)

it returns undefined?

i also thought of using listOwner but couldnt work out how to tell it
the current row, would listOwner.item.cellvalue work?
(im not at work to test, im at home being driven nuts by not being
able to resolve this:)

any ideas?

2005-11-22 Thread Mykola Paliyenko

Dave great post it is definitely worth more than .02$ :).

Frank please read Dave's post about EJB. And please lets give proper
names to the things. EJB and CMP will never more be the most popular
persistence technology. Yeah maybe they are market leaders when it
comes to money since others are free. But I hardly can imagine people
that build new project using EJB.

No, there's no overloaded methods at all in the webservice. Just to be on the
safe side, I tried to rename the method I want to call from Flex, but the
problem remains.

What I'm trying to do is to call a local webservice (that sits on the same
server as the Flex app) that I've created. The webservice acts as a Proxy and
then call methods on a remote webservice residing on another server.
Other methods, with less then 4 arguments, works fine.

Further investigation shows that the parameters seems to get mixed up between
the call from Flex and the .NET service. Parameter number one in the Flex call
ends up as argument three in the service and so on, when I debug. The position
of the arguments is random between calls.

Very strange! Possibly something wrong on my part, but I just can't find it...

Does the webservice have overloaded methods, methods with the same name that
take different numbers of parameters?  Flex doesn't really support that
unfortunately, you'd need to get a separate WSDL that eliminates the ones that
you don't want to use.

Hi!

I've encountered a strange problem when calling webservices from Flex 2.0. When
I'm calling a .NET webservice that takes 4 parameters, all strings, I got the
following error:

HTTP request error
#2032: Stream Error

The strange thing is that when I modify the webservice to only take 3
parameters everything runs fine. Any takes?

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Web service question

2005-11-22 Thread Carson Hager

That would be an egregious bug.All of these
SOAP frameworks use reflection to invoke methods. I couldn't imagine
performing a match based on arguments rather than method name first. I
would look at the SOAP payload to make sure.

Thanks for the help... but I just figured it out. Both
methods, although having different return types, were accepting exactly the same
object (a complex object). Guess this caused the same method to be called on the
server side. We are experimenting with XFire, so it must be a bug
perhaps.

Dimitrios,

Does your app allow you to invoke this method using
http? It would be invaluable to see the soap request to determine if the
correct operation is being invoked. You likely already have a tool to
inspect the soap payload. If not, tcptunnel from Axis is a very easy to
use tool to do just this. If you haven't set this up, I can walk you through
it.

[flexcoders] Re: Dynamic font loading

2005-11-22 Thread pkleppner
Thanks, Philippe. I think you were responding to a thread I started
last week. Your example here is a useful one, but doesn't actually
address the problem I was posing. In your example, although the
embedded font is placed in a separate component, it is still compiled
into the main SWF. What I would like to do instead is embed fonts in
independent SWF's that can be downloaded if/when needed.

I'm still not clear if that's possible, and very interested in any
feedback. In any case, thanks for this response.

You can decompile into ActionScript but I don't believe
there is a decompiler that will generate MXML. If there is, I'd like to
see it.

precompiled it into a swf. It was an old file and now I can't find the source mxml file. All I have is that swf. Is there any way I
can decompile it. I can't even see what I
had there since it was developed with the developer version of
flex. Any help please???
Thanks

You can decompile into ActionScript but I don't believe
there is a decompiler that will generate MXML. If there is, I'd like to
see it.

[flexcoders] Date objects in TreeDataProvider

2005-11-22 Thread ninjascience
m using an array of ValueObjects that contain arrays of ValueObjects
as a DataProvider for a tree component. Everything was working just
fine until I added a Date field to one of my Value objects. Now the
tree thinks that they should be nodes on the tree.

My VOs are like this

CategoryVO
 title:String
 id:Number
 arItems:Array

ItemVO
 name:String
 id:Number
 start:Date

I want my tree to look like this

+SomeCategory
++Item A
++Item B
+OtherCategory
++Item C
++Item D

but it looks like this...
+SomeCategory
++Item A
+++[object Object], 1, , Fri Nov 4 00:00:00 GMT-0800 2005, null
++Item B
+++[object Object], 1, , Fri Nov 4 00:00:00 GMT-0800 2005, null
+OtherCategory
++Item C
+++[object Object], 1, , Fri Nov 4 00:00:00 GMT-0800 2005, null
++Item D
+++[object Object], 1, , Fri Nov 4 00:00:00 GMT-0800 2005, null

Is there anyway to specifiy which objects get included as tree nodes
and which dont? I want to add a third level of composition within
each Item node.
thanks,

[flexcoders] Checkbox value

2005-11-22 Thread Mehdi, Agha
Title: Checkbox value

How can I make it so that my CheckBox also holds data property of an object and not just show the label. Basically, I have an object with data and label properties and I want the CheckBox to hold the data and display the label. If CheckBox can't do that then I'm gonna have to create a custom component. Just wanted to see if it was something CheckBox could do.

mx:Checkbox label={myobject.mylabelfield} data={myobject}/

[flexcoders] Change icon of custom components in the Insert Bar

2005-11-22 Thread Pacheco Carolina
Title: Change icon of custom components in the Insert Bar

I'm trying to show my custom components (mxml files) in the Insert Bar. I did it successfully after I read the following:

If you want your custom components to show up in the the Insert Bar, one way is to place them in the WEB-INF\flex\user_clases folder on the server and then choose Site Update Flex Components... FlexBuilder will fetch and inspect the components and add them to the Insert Bar. If the component can't be inspected due to a syntax error in the component, FlexBuilder will alert you that there is a problem.

But, how can I change the icon of each component in the Insert Bar?

Thanks

Carolina

Its a little tricky to figure out at first but once you do its pretty simple.

If you are working from Windows do you know how to use the command line?

Start-- Run -- cmd

 Hi,

 i have a checkbox cellrenderer that on click i want to fire a
 remoteobject request that passes one of the current datagrid rows
 cell values as one of the arguments but cannot get it to work as
the
 current row is not selected. i need to be able to do one of two
 things either access this value programmatically ie item.cellvalue
or
 programmatically set the current row.
 so far i have had limited success with item.cellvalue in that when
i
 reference this in an if statement it will recognise the value. eg

 if(item.cellvalue == 5)
 then go do something;

 but if i reference it like

 remoteobject.method(item.cellvalue)

 it returns undefined?

 i also thought of using listOwner but couldnt work out how to tell
it
 the current row, would listOwner.item.cellvalue work?
 (im not at work to test, im at home being driven nuts by not being
 able to resolve this:)

 any ideas?

[flexcoders] Closing via Menu VS via Shortcut Key

2005-11-22 Thread fowleryj
Hello all,

I'm able to close a popup window in my application via the menuChangeHandler,
like so:

private function menuChangeHandler(event) {
if(event.menuItem.attributes.data == Close) {
getURL(javascript:window.close(););
}
}

However, when I try to close the window via a shortcut key, I get the message
box I'm invoking, but the window itself doesn't close (note that even before I
put the message box code in, the window didn't close, so that's not preventing
the window from closing):

var lastKeyPressedControl:Boolean = false;
var currentKeyPressed;
public function initKeyListener() {
var keyListener = new Object();
keyListener.onKeyDown = function() {
currentKeyPressed = Key.getAscii();
if(currentKeyPressed == 99  lastKeyPressedControl) {
mx.controls.Alert.show('CTRL + c');
getURL(javascript:window.close(););
}
lastKeyPressedControl = Key.isDown(Key.CONTROL);
}
Key.addListener(keyListener);
}

Other shortcut keys I've checked for are recognized and their actions carried
out... why does this one not work properly?

Thanks in advance.

I'm using a button called treeButton to open a custom component called

TreeWindow is located in the namespace xmlns:mk=com.company.components.*

Replacing TreeWindow in the above code, how do I point to the component

Frank please read Dave's post about EJB. And please
lets give proper names to the things. EJB and CMP will never more be the most
popular persistence technology.

I didn't want to mention alternatives like Toplink and
Hibernate in an effort to keep the thread concise. It is honest to say
that for persistence frameworks EJB with CMP is the market leader since it is
an ubiqitous technology; it appears in every J2EE compliant container.
That does not necessarily mean it is being used by everyone. Hibernate is
the best product out there, but it's penetration as a 3rd party tool just can't
compete with a technology that is embedded into platforms.

So in saying that as a alternative to EJB with CMP,
Hibernate is the current de-facto standard for persistence in the Java
developer and architecture community. Hibernateis
currentlythe closest product to a reference implementation of the EJB 3.0/JSR-220 persistence standardization
effort.Currently two Hibernate employees even sit on the
International voting panel for this JSR effort! How you ca dismiss this
new standard with such disdai n is beyond me.

Sure, Hibernate can be
used without the new EJB3 persistence APIs, and yes, it is still more powerful
than current market alternatives without it, but having said that, most
developers love Hibernate since it persists most JavaBeans with no code changes
to the existing beans. Great for migrations.

I don't really
understand these evangalistic arguments anyways.Tell me what
happens to Hibernate wheneveryjava containerprovider includes
their own standardized version of it? Touting a technology as dead
or alive reveals an inflexibility that may not be in your development efforts
best interests, both of you guys should know better, how many deprecated
APIshave you had to thrown away over the years?Yet the root of
those APIs continue toadapt and becomewhat theywhere
originally intentioned. Anyone remember the JDBC type 1 then 2, then 3
drivers before type 4's got it right? Did you dump JDBC as well?

Things change, I suggest you read the new
JSR and tell me yo ur
thoughts on it, instead of continuing to remind me that you had bad experiences
with older technology.

Sincerely,

Frank Krul
