Re: [Flexradio] Software Defined Vector Network Analyzer

2006-05-13 Thread Bill Tracey
One fly in the ointment ... the SDR 1000 hardware is not full duplex. So
you can't measure the response to the signal your sending into the device
under test.

[Flexradio] Software Defined Vector Network Analyzer

2006-05-13 Thread Rob Frohne
Hi Everyone,

It appears to me that it would be principally only a little software to
turn the SDR-1000 into a quality Vector Network Analyzer similar to the
N2PK VNA

http://users.adelphia.net/~n2pk/VNA/VNAarch.html

only using the 11 KHz IF. I have got to build my homemade SDR-1000
before I can try this, but some of you with one already available to
play with should try it. It requires running the transmitter at low
power (probably using one watt or less and a step attenuator would be a
good idea), and receiving the signal from a reflection bridge (for S11
or S22) or through a network (for S12 or S21). You will need to have a
known 50 ohm load, and a good short and open to calibrate the
measurements. I suggest saving the magnitude and phase of the received
signal to a file so you can massage and display it in Scilab or Octave.
I would be happy to offer help and suggestions and Scilab or Octave help
to anyone interested in this project.

[Flexradio] Missing Messages

2006-05-13 Thread FlexRadio - Eric
We have received several notices from folks that were subscribed to our
mailing list that were not receiving the latest messages (as compared to the
archives). I just went through the entire 666 member list and found many
more people than I would have expected that had their "no mail" set to [B].
According to the mailman software that runs our list, this means, "Delivery
was disabled by the system due to excessive bouncing from the member's
address." While I would expect a few of these...maybe in the 10s for our
size reflector, I found over 200. I suspect this is a result of a recent
server move for our reflector which took place this past week.

S... If this is the first message you have received from the
[Flexradio] list in a while, welcome back and sorry for the interruption.
Check the archive to see what you missed. I'll be watching to make sure
this phenomenon does not continue. Have a great weekend and remember that
tomorrow is Mother's day. ;)

[Flexradio] HPSDR project - resources: list, website, wiki

2006-05-13 Thread Don AE5K
Most on this list are aware there is a group called HPSDR (High
Performance Software Defined Radio) and many are part of that activity.
The genesis of the group were a few SDR-1000 owners and some of the
early communication was conducted on this Flex discussion list.

Back in December, we started a discussion list specifically for the
group (then known as the Xylo-SDR group) to take the traffic off this
list. We have also taken advantage of the forums provided by Dale at
hamsdr.com.

In early March, the group name was changed to the present HPSDR and a
website established to supplement the discussion list and forum. Now a
wiki has been added to provide deeper detail and latest information.

If you have an interest in this group, there are multiple ways of
finding out what the group is all about and what it is "up to"...

1. Website: http://hpsdr.org - provides a good overview of the project
and its modules. It is kept fairly well up to date and should suffice
for the more casual interest.

2. Wiki:
http://hpsdr.org/wiki/index.php?title=HpsdrWiki:Community_Portal
At the moment, several project developers have edit access and have
updated the wiki information to reflect "near current" status. This
would be a good resource for those who would like more detail and
cutting edge news than the website provides.

3. Discussion List: http://hpsdr.org/reflector.html to sign up or
http://lists.hpsdr.org/pipermail/hpsdr-hpsdr.org/ to just read the
archives. Traffic on the list has varied from less than one message per
day to a recent high in the 60's! This is the way to participate in the
designs or to keep up on the very latest directions.

4. HAMSDR.COM: there are some postings here, but more importantly, this
is the place to sign up to buy any PC boards produced. But please read
about the boards on our website hpsdr.org and ask questions on the hpsdr
discussion list.

5. Teamspeak: same channel as the sessions held for the SDR-1000, and in
fact HPSDR project is often discussed on the Friday evening (USA time)
weekly session. Separate HPSDR sessions are sometimes held.

This is an extremely exciting time and project. Thank you for reading
this information and if you're interested, try one or more of the
resources mentioned above.

[Flexradio] Image rejection?

2006-05-13 Thread David Woodhead
Hi all,

I'm evaluating my rig on the bench with a sig gen and have a few questions
regarding image rejection...

I am finding that the image rejection is not consistent from band to band. I
can optimize on each band with a different set of values. Is this normal? It
would be nice to be able to store seperate values for each band if so.

My offsets are:
... 60m40m20m...15m...10m
phase...-.89.-1.11...-2.08...0.02...-5.44
gain. 6.8.7.05.5.14...6.61...19.33

How much image rejection should I expect? I'm adusting it by tuning the sig gen
to the image frequency and then nulling the received signal. I can acheive
>70dB null. This is not the optimum for the observed image on the panadapter
screen when tuned to the wanted signal - it is only ~ 60dB down.

Also,

I have a noise spike in the center of the panadapter (corresponding to DC). Its
level bounces and it is at a reported ~ -80dBm to -115dBm depending on the
preamp gain setting. I susspect this is AC 60Hz hum getting into the IQ audio.
Is this normal? When I play the wave files from the flex site I do not see this
which makes me susspect a ground loop or something.

Thanks for any advice...

Hi Eric,

Any idea how expensive the Atlas board and Janus board will be? I went
to put in an order, but found nothing about the cost on the web site.
Not having an unlimited budget, I didn't put in an order yet. Can you
spill any light on this issue?

Thanks & 73,

Re: [Flexradio] new calibration when start. v1.6.1 first time ?

2006-05-13 Thread FlexRadio - Eric
This is FFTW Wisdom. It has existed in the program directory for quite some
time, but we added code that attempts to run it if the wisdom file is not
found. This wisdom file optimizes FFTW for use with your particular system
dynamics. It is a one time operation (per version) and should not take more
than 3-4 minutes.

It is called "FFT Wisdom" and optimizes the FFT transforms in the

[Flexradio] SDRBreadboard up and running

2006-05-13 Thread Joe - AB1DO
Hello all,

Well I installed Bob Cowdery's version 4 of the Squeak SDR Breadboard and after
a double take (the original install file was missing a component so that the
radio did not build correctly, but Bob has corrected that now), my SDR-1000
plays Squeak QSOs (no pun intended). Boy, this is different and fun all in one
and one cannot help admire all the amazing work Bob has done.

I will admit that I was slightly ahead of the game as over several weeks in
April I decided to give Squeak a whirl, which started a regular back and forth
email with Bob. He helped me ultimately get it all working (that was back in
the days when the installation instructions were much more rudimentary than
they are now) and together we worked on getting it to work with the RFE board
and the Delta-44 sound card. Bob would do all the programming (my programming
skills are limited at best) and I would feed back the results, as he still only
has the original three-board stack at this point.

What I can say, and this may help others, is that it took me a while to figure
out the difference between Squeak and other applications. Usually under
windows, when you double click on a file created by an application, windows
will automatically start up that application and then open the file. You can of
course instruct windows to start up Squeak when you double click on a Squeak
image (image is Squeak speak for everything you have running under Squeak at
that point in time) and all will appear OK, ie Squeak starts and image is
displayed, but nothing will work. What you need to do is when you've installed
Squeak, copy the whole directory in which the Squeak application resides to a
new directory (let's call it folder 2). Start Squeak, build an image (by
loading files into squeak, or installing applications, or anything else) and
save it to that same directory. Next time you want to start up that image, drag
it over the Squeak.exe icon in the same folder and all will work.

More specifically, open folder 2, start Squeak.exe and when you have gone
through all the many preliminary SDRBreadboard installation steps necessary and
described on Bob's website, save the image (in a blank space click and select
save as...Save it in the same directory (folder 2) from where you opened
Squeak. This will be your back-up so that you will not need to go through all
those installation steps again. Close Squeak and copy the whole folder 2
directory containing Squeak and the image you just built to a new directory
(folder 3). Folder 2 will now always be your back-up.

Open folder 3, drag the image you just created over Squeak.exe (both in folder
3) and continue to install SDRBreadboard. After you have installed
SDRBreadboard, again save the image, but under a different name. (you will now
have 2 images in your Squeak working directory: the pristine, base image you
created earlier and the SDRBreadboard image, as well as Squeak.exe). To start
SDRBreadboard in future, open folder 3 and drag the SDRBreadboard image over
Squeak.exe and all should work.

I hope this helps. I know it sounds confusing (believe me I was for a long
time!) and it does take some getting used to, but when it does all work is a
lot of fun.

2006-05-13 Thread Eric Ellison
Folks

Ok-Ok I just called my wife and she said we could go down to the local
Circuit City and buy a DVR to replace my 1980s vintage Sony Handheld Tape
recorder (weighs about 5 lb and takes 6 C cells, which records about 1 hour
on slp).

I will record Gerald's and our Saturday SDR conferences at Hara. The
availability of the visual portions of the presentations will be up to the
authors. Please don't E-mail them since they are busy 'honing' them up. I'll
ask and find a repository if they accept the request. Audio and Presentation
will not be in synch unless they use poor form and say "Slide one
Shows". etc!

Harold's special audio effects from the Pic-A-Star probably won't come
through unless I can rig something in Stereo. I'll see if Todd Collins and I
can figgre something out.

Should be fun!

Quite impressive. How do I get a copy of the presentations, for one
who can't attend Dayton? I plan to demo my SDR-1000 at some ham
clubs here in RI. and the presentations would be very nice to summarize.

Folks

I am going to try to audio record the forums at Hara, but no guarantee on
that at this point. If someone out there, planning to attend Gerald's and
Our SDR forums at Hara would volunteer to record the audio, it would be
appreciated.

I will be 'broadcasting' all of the Festivities at the Suite on Saturday
evening on Teamspeak, since they do have high speed Internet. The audio
portions of the presentations by Gerald et.al. from the suite will be
recorded and posted on Dale's website for later listening, possibly as late
as the following Monday.

I can't wait to see the new rig, even if only in prototype.

Thanks

Hi!
When I started v1.6.1 for the first time a DOS windows run some
calibration for several min before any other screen. What was that? Have
not seen that before. Could not see anything in the release rev. about it.

[Flexradio] Teamspeak Audio - 05-13-06 lots of announcements

2006-05-13 Thread Eric Ellison
Folks

No summary again, probably won't be one till after Fredrichasfen in June!

In my announcements I refered to "USB" board, and actually I meant to say
UCB board.

I will not be on the Friday Forum next week. Will be at Dayton and all the
festivities.

I will be broadcasting Teamspeak Live from the From the Flex-Radio Suite
next Saturday at utc. (and before). Join us live from Dayton. I also
hope to have a Vidio feed and will post more details later in the week. More
like SSTV than live television.

Will have a Teamspeak - HPSDR meeting tonight just for general discussion of
all the exciting HPSDR happenings in this week!

If you have not ordered an Atlas board please visit Dale's hamsdr.com
website in the projects section. We have 186 orders to date. I have delayed
production a few days, but they will be available shortly and prior to the
other project boards.

Thanks Ken - N9VV for moderating.

[Flexradio] ptt problem

2006-05-13 Thread Bill Nagle

does anyone have a copy of the instructions to change R9 from 1k to 470
ohms to correct the occasional problem where the equipment does not go
back to receive? I need the location of the resistor and which board it is on
also.
