[Flexradio] Buffer Settings

Best wishes to ya'll for 2007
I had a Flex to Flex contact with a station in Italy, and he was
surprised when I told him that I too was on an SDR-1000
Anyhow, I'm still a little confused with regards how the buffer sizes
affect the quality of the audio (if it actually does). Apart from more
latency with higher buffer settings, and high CPU usage with lower
buffer sizes, which is as quoted in the User Manual. Which kinda
indicates that, with a higher buffer setting the audio should be
smoother, if that is the case, wot can one expect to happen to the audio
with a lower buffer size ?
Anyone got some answers fro me
I have run my SDR / Delta 44 at 256, 512, and at 1024 buffers, and not
sure if I can here any difference, apart from the latency issue
So, wot I really want to know is, for SSB, wot buffer size will yield
the best quality audio ???

Best regards

Re: [Flexradio] Desensing of signal by AGC due to carrier?

2007-01-08 Thread Charles Greene
Dale,

I also submitted a tuneable notch filter to the enhancement list a
few months ago. The way I envision it working is much the same way
it works in MixW, Right click on an unwanted signal. A drop down
box has as a selection: ADD NOTCH FILTER. Click on this. You can add
other notch filters at other frequencies too. They are pretty
narrow; I add two for a Pactor II signal or a RTTY signal. These
notch filters are very effective in MixW for the digital modes but
don't do anything for you on SSB.

You might also get some relief by turning ACG off and reducing the RF
gain control. If the front end is overloading, try turning the preamp off.

At the bottom of every post there's a link to the Flex-radio site and
the Knowledge Base. It's a great resourse for setting up the various
options for various modes. Have a search through and I'm sure you will
find something of use in explaining the various options and settings for
voice and SSB operation.

When you get a bit deeper in, there are two new papers on the use of the
160Hz filter and EQ settings. :-)

Re: [Flexradio] Idea for new feature: instant replay

2007-01-08 Thread Bob McGwier
This is a done deal on Linux and on Windows it is conceptually trivial
but would require custom software to do it since jack does not exist on
Windows yet. There is supposedly a windows jack effort underway. But I
would like breathing to be a long term thing so I am not holding my
breath (until I asphyxiate myself) waiting.

I gotta warn you, though,if this becomes popular, I can see the
outcry on the contesting reflectors. There are folks who beleive
that when the contest period ends, it's "pencils down". Others say,
whatever it takes. Others say, if you didn't copy it that way
initially, tough beans, no looking back.

I love the excitement of rules interpretation that novel new

Re: [Flexradio] Desensing of signal by AGC due to carrier?

2007-01-08 Thread Joe - AB1DO
Dale,

I have no issue with the ANF - it works superb. And I agree that an
extension with manually tunable NFs would also have merrit.

I'm just wondering if it is at all possible to have the ANF work before the
AGC (Forgive me if I'm totally off base here as I have no idea what the
current processing order is or even if it would make sense). That way, the
AGC would work on the signal after the carrier has been filtered out and
(most likely) leave the SSB signal alone.

I understand that I can manually correct for it by turning AGC off and
adjusting RF/AF, but that's several controls to manipulate, which all would
need to be readjusted again when the carrier itself disappears. Just
wondering if it could be avoided in the first place.

José ,

I too use the UB802, so it is not a really big issue for me, although I do
like to use the 160Hz notch filter.

As several users have not reported the same issue, I'm reaching the
conclusion it must be something in my setup. Still open to suggestions as to
what it might be.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex Radio 1 watt Redirection

2007-01-08 Thread Edwin Marzan
Well, I read that if you have the 100w power amp installed the bias current
is still being sent to the power amp and that would mean that the unit is
not really off. I use the switch on my power supply to turn my SDR-1000 off.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex Radio 1 watt Redirection (Power Switch)

2007-01-08 Thread Jerry Flanders

Well, mine toggles between two mechanical positions also. But read
the manual: On this radio, the ON/OFF operation is more complicated.
The switch on the case DOES NOT power off the radio. I (used to) use
one big station 13.8V supply and leave it constantly ON. Now I have
to add another separate switched supply for the SDR-1000.

With my new SDR1k-dedicated power supply, I _guess_ the case power
switch can just be left ON all the time and all switching done on the
mains to the external 13.8V power supply. Is it safe to do this, Flex?

Excerpts from the current manual:

Power-Up Procedure
The SDR-1000 is unique in that the software does not have a way to
cut the 13.8V power to the hardware
unit. For this reason, we recommend the following procedure to ensure
that the radio starts in a stable, safe
state on Power Up:

Power-Down Procedure
The power-down sequence is almost the reverse of the power-up procedure.

Note: It is necessary to cut the power at the supply in order to
completely power
down the radio and ensure the amplifier circuitry is not in a bias state.

Re: [Flexradio] Transmit euqalizer + Gate causes lock-up in SVN821

2007-01-08 Thread Edwin Marzan

Joe,

Using the official latest realease 1.8.0, when I use the equalizer and the
noise gate I notice that CPU cycles shoot up and PowerSDR slows down
dramatically. The ptt is sluggish in both directions. Turn off the noise
gate and the response is back to its normal zippy self.

I'm using an HP Media Center PC with 3.0Gig Pentium Processor, a gig of RAM
and a Delta 44 Sound Card. Our symptoms are not exactly the same but there
is definitely something going on that puts a drain on our systems when the
equalizer and noise gate are used together.

José ,

I too use the UB802, so it is not a really big issue for me, although I do
like to use the 160Hz notch filter.

As several users have not reported the same issue, I'm reaching the
conclusion it must be something in my setup. Still open to suggestions as

what it might be.

2007-01-08 Thread Eric Wachsmann
I'm not aware that we changed anything related to the limits of the Sub RX.
Please make sure that you are still using the same sampling rate as this
will affect the range of the Sub RX. Also, double check that you are using
the receivers in the same order as the 11kHz IF can cause the limits to be
within range one way and not the other (i.e. freq 1 on VFO A works with freq
2 on VFO B, but freq 1 on VFO B will NOT work with freq 2 on VFO A).

Re: [Flexradio] Sub RX toggle Key and Sub RX Volume

2007-01-08 Thread Eric Wachsmann
There are two vertical sliders in the Sub RX section. The one on the left
controls the Main RX volume while the one on the right controls the Sub RX
volume. Note that these are not active unless the Sub RX is active.

When it is active, the controls combine with the overall AF control (i.e. if
you set the Main RX to mid and the Sub RX to mid and the AF to the mid
point, you would get 25% (0.5*0.5) of the max audio output.

Conceptually, the AF is an overall gain control in all cases. The other two
controls are to enable you to manipulate the main/Sub RX audio independently
when Sub RX is active.

Re: [Flexradio] Transmit euqalizer + Gate causes lock-up in SVN821

2007-01-08 Thread Joe - AB1DO
Edwin,

Nice to know I'm not alone. (Others have also contacted me privately with
the same issue). Interesting is also that we are both using 3GHz Pentium
Processors with 1GB of RAM and a Delta 44. Don't know if that is relevant,
just an observation.

In the mean time I have done some more experimenting. First I started with a
clean database, just to make sure I had the default settings. I then
adjusted the Gate setting such that enviromental noise was blocked
(around -23 here). As I was doing so, I immediately noticed that the moment
the Gate is closed (blocks), CPU% increases. Without EQ on, the increase is
small however, only some 5-10%.

The problem only occurs when both Gate and EQ are on and the Gate is closed
(blocking environmental noise). The CPU% then jumps to 70-80%. Speaking in
the mic, the Gate opens after a delay at best, but usually not at all.
Sometimes, on the first over, everything will work OK, but on subsequent
overs there is either a long delay or no audio transmission whatsoever. All
information before the Gate opens is lost. Once (and if) the Gate is open
due to audio in the mic, CPU% immediately drops to the usual 20% or so on
transmission. The closed Gate (in conjunction with the EQ) seems to cause
the problem.

The problem occurs in both 1.8.0 and 1.9.0SVN821. Adjusting the audio and
especially the DSP buffers makes a difference. Lowering the DSP buffer from
4096 to 1024 cuts the first syllable as opposed to no audio getting through
at all (monitoring with a secind receiver). Without EQ on, the Gate will
open immediately no matter what the buffer settings and all of the audio
gets through to to the second receiver.

My process priority is High. Adjusting this down makes no difference (as I
would expect). I have not tried the Real Time setting yet.

Hope this helps resolve the issue, or helps someone point out what I need to
adjust to make Gate and EQ work together.

Re: [Flexradio] Transmit euqalizer + Gate causes lock-up in SVN821

2007-01-08 Thread Joe - AB1DO
Edwin,

Nice to know I'm not alone. Others have contacted me privately with the same
issue also.

In the mean time I have done some further experimenting. I have checked both
1.8.0 and 1.9.0SVN821 - there is no difference. Also I have started with a
clean database, just in case, again no difference.

It is very clear that the issue occurs only when both Gate and Transmit EQ
(did not check RX EQ) are enabled. In that case, when starting the
transmission with a closed Gate, the CPU% shoots up to 80-90%. If and when
the Gate opens, CPU% immediately drops to the usual 20% or so on voice
transmission. Sometimes the Gate will open after a delay, other times not at
all (see below). All information prior to the Gate opening is lost
(monitoring with a second receiver).

A higher audio buffer and especially a lower DSP buffer will make a
difference: with audio buffer=512 and DSP buffer=4096 the Gate will not open
on transmission. With audio buffer=2048 and DSP buffer=1024, the Gate will
open after a delay, cutting off the first syllable at best. Changing the
sound card sampling rate makes no difference. Lowering the system priority
from High (my usual setting) makes no difference, it doesn't get worse.

Hope this helps resolve this issue.

Re: [Flexradio] Transmit equalizer + Gate causes lock-up in SVN821

2007-01-08 Thread Joe - AB1DO
Rick,

You hit the nail on the head! If I unselect the 160Hz Notch filter, the CPU%
here hangs around 13-17% on transmission with Gate and EQ on and all works
flawlessly. Invoking the notch causes the problems - CPU% shoots up. Great
find.

Only thing is, I'd like to use the notch filter

[Flexradio] No Transmit

2007-01-08 Thread Frank Mayer
I have discovered today that there are some frequencies throughout the bands
that the radio will not transmit on. 1862 khz, 1862.057, 1861.990, 1861.969,
etc. I can find these frequencies by changing the vfo while the rig is
tranmitting. I can hear a relay click inside the rig when it gets to these
frequencies and then the rig will not tranmit. Go up or down 1hz and the rig
will once agn transmit. Any ideas?

Re: [Flexradio] Squelch after ANF, not before

2007-01-08 Thread Stig Rasmussen
Hello and happy new year!

Maybe so, but they still work a lot with V1.9.x now I see. Why is that?
I'll like to hear about the development of V2.0 then...?

And this, my suggestion, is not a new feature. Not a bug either. Just a
litle re-programming. :-)
Please consider, Flex-guys, Eric?...

Stig,

The development of the 1.6.x version of PowerSDR is essentially "frozen"
in the respect of adding new features.

Eric and the guys are working very hard on the new 2.0 version which has
a brand new architecture change where the radio functions are separated
from the UI (user Interface or GUI).

Once the "core" portion of 2.0 is working and released, then there is
going to be an evaluation of all the features that have been posted and
we are going to allow the users to vote for there "top 10". All the
votes will be compiled and the most selected features will be the first
to be implemented.

Then a second round of feature selections will take place.

We appreciate you input for the squelch feature request and encourage
you to add as many as new features you can think of.

Hello all.

First; I'll post this here because I see nothing happening in the
"Feature
request" section
on the web. All cases is "Open" since beginning og august. Why is that?

To the subject...:

It could be an idea to make the squelch be operating after the ANF if
possible. I often monitor SSB frequencies with the squelch set. Then a
carrier or some cw opens the squelch. If I use the ANF, the tone
disapears,
but the squelch remains open and the noise comes through.
I'll think that if the ANF took care of the beep tone in front of the
squelch it would not open. (I hope you understand)
Thank you.

Frank,

I just tried v1.8.0 & SVN 821 and could not duplicate the problem.

I would suggest starting with a clean, new database. Rename PowerSDR.mdb to
something else & start the console. When asked, do not import a previous

Re: [Flexradio] Transmit euqalizer + Gate causes lock-up in SVN821The problem only occurs when both Gate and EQ are on and the Gate is closed

2007-01-08 Thread Jim, W4ATK
"The problem only occurs when both Gate and EQ are on and the Gate is closed
(blocking environmental noise). The CPU% then jumps to 70-80%. Speaking in
the mic, the Gate opens after a delay at best, but usually not at all.
Sometimes, on the first over, everything will work OK, but on subsequent
overs there is either a long delay or no audio transmission whatsoever. All
information before the Gate opens is lost. Once (and if) the Gate is open
due to audio in the mic, CPU% immediately drops to the usual 20% or so on
transmission. The closed Gate (in conjunction with the EQ) seems to cause
the problem."

I run my SDR1000 in SSB mode with the TX Equalizer active and the Noise Gate
active along with the 160Hz notch. I cannot duplicate your difficulty here.
I checked my CPU usage and the maximum I saw was 10% and it very quickly
settled back to its more normal range of 3 - 5%. I am using a dual core AMD
6800 + 1.2Ghz machine. Anything but a power house these days. The VOX
triggers well, and SSB operation is "normal". Iam running version 1.9.0 and
I believe the latest SVN. The amount of CPU usage you report is much hihger
than I experience. While doing the test I had Outlook, SDR1000 console,
CWGet, and ACLOG 3.0 running. I am running Windows XP Service pack 2 and
have made no optimization changes, it is pure virgin XP.

Re: [Flexradio] No Transmit

2007-01-08 Thread Frank Mayer
I think I'm getting somewhere now. The DDS setting in Setup/General/Hardware
Config is affecting the problem. If I auto calibrate to WWV it sets to 468 and
3885 starts to work. It was previously set to "0" after the install. It was
set to 407 when all the other freqs weren't working. I'm afraid to touch it
now! I thought that setting just calibrated the frequency accuracy of the
radio.

Frank,

I just tried v1.8.0 & SVN 821 and could not duplicate the problem.

I would suggest starting with a clean, new database. Rename
PowerSDR.mdb to something else & start the console. When asked, do not
  import a previous version.

Hmm, the mystery remains then... There must be something about a

[Flexradio] Proset-5, Heil

2007-01-08 Thread Gerald Capodieci
It will plug into and run the SDR. Use a 1/8-1/4 converter for the Mic and 2x
1/4 mono to 1/4 stereo for the headphones. The cost is about $8.00 at a music
store. Using the HM-5 cartridge, the SDR transmit settings are: High=3600,
Low=100. EQ: Preamp=+6, Low=+6, Mid=0, High=+12. Signal reports are superb!

[Flexradio] Recording of W9AD on his Flex

2007-01-08 Thread A.R.S. - W5AMI
I have a growing collection of audio clips that I eventually intend to
place in an audio archives website for ham radio. In particular AM
stations such as Dave. As everyone can hear, Dave has wonderful audio
using his Flex SDR on AM. I'm proud to see more and more Flexers
getting their SDR on AM, and just in recent months! Many don't
realize just how great the audio is using the Flex on AM, not to
mention how well the Flex receives AM to full fidelity.

I made this short clip of Dave this evening using my Flex for the recording.

Dave - W9AD
8khz filter
No pre or post processing other than converting to MP3
Signal was not as strong as usual, however, still Q5

Long ago and far away, before we had the external list, and probably
before this reflector was established, I proposed a notch filter that
worked on a "drag and drop" basis. It would stay on the frequency that
the notch was deposited on. The scroll wheel could be used, if need be,
to widen it up.

The original listing had pictures which may or may not still show up if we
could find the thread, which (I think) would have appeared on the original
Flex web site.

Frank,

Is there any way to look at your .mbd with Microsoft Access? If the
frequency in the Band Text Table has false in the transmit table, the
SDR will not transmit on that frequency.

[Flexradio] Received Audio & KVM Switches

2007-01-08 Thread Bob Maser
I have my Flex Radio really sounding good, especially on the transmit side.
As for receive, I am using a pair of Harmon Kardon powered speakers that
leave a lot to be desired. I would be interested to know which speakers are
available that will reproduce the wonderful audio that I know is coming out
of the radio.

BTW, I just installed a KVM switch to enable me to run 2 computers with only
one keyboard, monitor and mouse. I bought a bunch of them on an eBay
auction so if anyone is interested in one, I am selling them at $15 each
plus shipping. They do not require a power supply as they are powered thru
the PS/2 connections. They are made by Avocent and they do not come with
cables. You would need 4 PS/2 male to male cables and 2 VGA (monitor) male
to male cables. They allow you to switch between computers with either a
push of a switch or a key sequence. Anyone interested, please contact me
off line.
